Hey people,
Okay so this problem literally drives me insane to the point that I either want to smash open my SII or sell it.
The problem is that whenever on STOCK ROM/KERNEL, my touch screen becomes unresponsive in many areas at different times.
NO THE PHONE IS NOT ON CHARGING WHEN IT HAPPENS
Actually when the phone is on charging everything works perfectly. Now this problem arises only with the STOCK ROM/KERNEL and sometimes occassionaly on custom ROMs. I was on CM9 and PA and many other custom ROMs and the issue wasn't present there or was minimal that it was barely noticeable.
Now what could be the problem? I've had this phone on STOCK 2.3.4/4.0.3/4.1.2(leak) and the issue I feel gets worse by the minute.
On top of that, the KB lag is way too much. The KB keys get stuck, become unresponsive, some areas not being touched due to the screen not being responsive.
So my question is, what is the problem? The same STOCK ROM/KERNEL was tested on many friends' SII, same file that I flashed on their devices myself, on their SII, it performs brilliantly, my SII becomes an 80-year old guy.
So is this a hardware issue? Has anyone else faced this same issue (one without the charging)? I have run Multitouch tests and what not, it responds sometimes and sometimes it doesn't.
For me, I could switch back to a custom ROM but what's the use if the official ROM/KERNEL is doing this to the phone?
Sorry for such a long post and sorry if it is in the wrong section or has been asked before, I'm just seriously frustrated and thinking of selling the device.
If someone can guide me as to how to overcome this issue, I would be eternally grateful.
Regards,
Major
Only happens when not charging? Sounds like you might have enabled the power savings mode on settings. You can try disabling and see if that helps

No the power saving mode is off all the time, I don't use it, is useless anyway.

This thread started off as a mod request because I thought it was my proximity sensor causing the issue. After further investigation I'm completely stumped as, disabling my proximity sensor didn't work (or the disable wasn't effective, not sure). Highly modified original post to make the thread relevant to the direction that its going.
Issue details - screen will not stay on while in call unless enabling speakerphone mode. After call initiates, screen promptly turns off. Pressing power key wakes the screen up but the second a finger is touched ANYWHERE on the screen it turns off again forcing one to wait for the call to disconnect itself or pull the battery to hard reset the device (whichever comes first). The issue seems to be somewhat inconsistent, as some calls I get more responsiveness out of the screen than others. It DOES seem to be software related as this issue is very, very specific. It only happens while a call is active. The screen and standby functions work 100% of the time otherwise.
Facts:
-issue was not present before obtaining s off and upgrading to ICS
-issue is present when doing a clean install of the Rom (energy, though I'm inclined to think its not Rom related for obvious reasons)
-issue persisted even when restoring an old back up of a gingerbread state from days prior to obtaining s off and flashing ics.
I know I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. I've spoken with several others who are having the same problem. Hoping an xda elite on here might be able to figure out what might be causing this to happen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(Original post) -
My proximity sensor is on the fritz and making it impossible to multitask anything while on a call (so much to the point where sometimes I can't even hang up and have to pull my battery). It's killing the screen the second I touch the screen anywhere while on a call.
Can someone tell me how to, or would someone even be able to put something together that'd allow me to disable my proximity sensor entirely? I don't really need it anyways since I can just manually hit standby before I hold my phone up to my ear. Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated =)

Too tricky? No one? I know I'm not the only one encountering issues with their proximity sensor freaking out while on a call.
I guess ill just have to live with the inability to do anything on my phone while on a call unless I activate the speaker. Not the end of the world.
But if anyone can write a script/throw something together that'd turn it off you could save ne a lot of trouble and help others that are having this issue as well. Nbd ::shrugs::

would a piece of tape work? just tape it over the sensor.
No cuz then itd just stay off. The problem is that the screen won't stay on while in a call. If I touch the screen anywhere while on a call the screen shuts off immediately. =( very annoying. Can't even hang up sometimes.

Totally worked. My proximity sensor seems to be off but oddly the screen still won't stay on while in call unless I have speakerphone enabled lol.
I figured it HAS to be related to the proximity sensor cuz the screen shuts off the instant my finger touches it... But apparently the problem is related to something else entirely. Thanks though =)
Just a slightly annoying glitch I can live with. Guess I'm gonna have to lol

Totally reflash your rom, leak, whatever.. that bug sounds like something didn't take fully on initial setup. Can't hurt to try. I say this because it sounds VERY similar to the problem I had with my Vibrant.. and many of the issues I keep reading people having make me think that the install methods aren't perfect and fool proof.
If you're on the leak you'd have to make a nandroid, but if on a rom that doesn't wipe data partition you can just wipe the system and reinstall- or worse case restore a nandroid of data partition.

Yeah. That was my first suspicion. Sadly it persisted even when I restored a backup of when I was running nrg's gingerbread Rom. Think it might be some kind of weird hardware failure since it persists no matter what I do (clean install from scratch with everything wiped/cleared).
Nit a huge deal. If j ever have to look something up while on a call all I gotta do is throw the speaker on which is normally do in that situation anyways he he. Just bothersome when there's an issue you haven't been able to fix no matter what you've tried ya know? =)

I have the same issue, I thought it was just my phone. It's such an annoying issue, can't even hang up half the time. I love the phone but that one issue is really irking me. I never had this issue til I updated to ICS.

That's the really strange thing of it is that I never had the issue till I flashed ICS as well, but then the issue persisted when I restored an old gingerbread backup. Hopefully someone might see this that might have a better understanding and be able to figure out what's causing this to happen. =L. I'll change the subject of the thread to hopefully draw attention to it.
Question for you (let's compare) are you s off? And what Rom are you currently running? I'm inclined to think its not Rom related since the issue persists even when restoring a nandroid back up from days before I ever obtained s off and flashed ics. It'd be nice to confirm this is happening on Roms other than energy. Don't feel like going through all the steps to flash revolutionary or any of the other ics roms at this moment just to confirm what I already suspect.

Anyone else suffering this?
I'm on stock unrooted Rom and about 3 times a day my phone just won't wake using either power or home buttons.
Could this be caused by a buggy application or is my phone possibly developing a fault as it was fine for the first week or so?

i try to figure it out after root and flash custom kernel. the best solution, back to stock.
how many apps are installed? (Actually I mean how much phone memory has been used?)
This happens to me also once every 2 weeks, can't really know the exact situation to be able to replicate it.
symptoms occur mostly in the morning, when the device doesn't wake up to do the morning automated tasks, such as Titanium Backup, turn on wifi, and most important: alarm clock....
When I press the Home button the device will wakeup and start immediately doing all the tasks it should have done earlier...
I am on a custom ROM (mine, in my signature), with Perseus kernel.
My S3 is fully working. Only the issue is power goes off automatically some time later if it is not used and left.
Does anyone help me to fix this issue?
Galaxy S3 Turns Off (Fully Off) Overnight or When Unused
Having exactly the same problem.
When my Galaxy S3 is left for a while (more than half an hour or so it seems) I find it is not in idle mode, but has fully turned itself off.
The question is, whether this is due to a crash, or intentional (which would be a terrible feature if you wanted to receive a call overnight.)
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing it? - The first S3 I had developed screen issues and exhibited similar problems, turning itself off. But it turned out that one was faulty - the screen was corrupted after a while and it would not turn back on.
So, is there a feature we can turn off which does this that we can turn off? Or is it simply a flaw, and if so is there a way to trace it with say, logs or something else?
Any help gratefully appreciated.

Hmm... Perhaps, but if an app can cause your phone to shut off entirely without user input?... surely that's an O/S security issue
Well, I've seen a few other people with the same issue, I suppose I could try a factory reset and try for a few days without any extra apps. (Arg! The pain of no apps!)
Widgets could be a culpret I suppose. Still, turning off entirely? Seems a bit odd.
Anyone have any more ideas?
Experienced same thing when i was still new to android. Phone just reboot itself and sometimes it lights up itself with out touching it. Then i read somewhere that it could be some app causing it so i did a fresh start. Wiped up everything and install a stock rom thru odin. From then i always read user reviews and its permissions when downloading apps and when i find the permissions fishy il pass on it.

I own two different RAZR phones and recently they both have started doing something very strange. I will turn on the phone and notice that the screen starts to do a stutter when actions are taken (button push, screen swipe, etc.) After a little bit or a reboot the phone usually returns to normal. After a little while longer I see this happen again. I find it odd that two different phones started displaying this behavior around the same time which makes me think that it might be software related as opposed to hardware going bad in both phones at the same time.
Anyone ever see this behavior? Anyone have any thoughts?
Here is a link to a short video I made of the stutter so you can see exactly what I am talking about (sorry about the wrong orientation):

I think I got rid of the issue for now. I ended up looking at the most recently updated software and removing a couple of them that were not used much anymore and neither phone has experienced the issue since. Must be some sort of update that came along and caused an issue (maybe in conjunction with other software) and the OS. Strange...
Glad to know that it is not a hardware issue.

I'm having the same issues, its worse when I'm using the browser and keyboard. It acts like I'm touching the screen where I'm not. I have heard about golocker possibly causing the problem. Are you using a different locker or launcher? I found rebooting and wiping the cache help a little but it only seems temporary.

I don't think it is limited to a problem caused by one application. I think that is might be a combination of apps and how they interact with each other and the OS. I uninstalled about 5 recently updated apps that I did not need and managed to get rid of the issue on both my phones. I think some of them I got rid of were (Avast (Changed this to Vipre...personally was going to do this anyway), Lux, GSam Battery, etc.) Do I think there are problems specifically with one of these programs? No. They are all good programs. BUT, once I started seeing issues they were on the top of the most recently updated list and I decided to start there.
I use Titanium Backup and it has a list of apps that you can sort by the most recently updated and this is how I decided what apps I should look at to try to alleviate my issues. I knew the day that issues started and that gave me some clues as to where to start looking. It worked for me, but it might not have as good results for everyone.
Hope this helps!

my screen stutters in a similar manner, but only when running Google play music, plugged into a logitech speaker using the headphone jack. didn't happen on gb. Also tried a custom rom - DROID HD and the same thing happened, but not quite as bad.
DROID RAZR - ICS / STOCK / ROOT
Hi guys.
My phone shuts down at random moments. I can boot it up again by holding the power button for about 10 seconds. Sometimes, not always, the phone feels hot and batterylife dropped. I have been struggling with this problem ever since i got this phone. I hoped to solve it with installing a new kernel and rom. I am now on Slimbean 3.1.0. The phone was initially on XLQ6 4.0.4. This didn't change anything, unfortunately.
I have also tried:
- removing external SD
- placing a new battery (which has no room to move, in case anyone suggests the battery might be moving)
- wiping caches
The strange thing is that my friend has bought his i9100 together with mine in the same order. He is also on XLQ6 and is experiencing the same issues. Less often than me, however.
My smalband is still on XLQ6. Is it possible that this causes my problems? Or is it more likely that my friend and me simply bought phones from a bad batch or something (hardware related)? I really don't want to send back my phone. That is my absolute last resort.
EDIT: Problem solved! Installing the application "Load Monitor" and enabling the "wake lock" function has done the trick. No more shutdowns or reboots!
Anyone?
2 devices with the same issue?
I'd be at the store where I bought it right now.
I will do that when I am absolutely sure that it is hardware related. However, if anyone has a potential solution I would really like to solve this issue myself.

Same with me. change from 4.0.4 WLPT to 4.0.4 WLPY but problem still presists.
Does anyone know if changing smalband (if that is possible?) could make a difference? Because that is the only similarity to the original state of my phone. A lot of AT&T users in the USA experienced the same problems also with 4.0.4. However, nobody can come up with a solution.

If it is new and warranty isn't voided, why not flashing the carrier ROM and get a new one?

Because I don't like to lose my phone for a couple of weeks. And I prefer to fix these things myself. I have seen so many topics about this on XDA and Google. There must be a solution to it.
Is it possible that these problems are caused by my modem? That is the only unchanged thing since I have had this phone.
I might have found a possible solution. I've read something on a Dutch forum about sim-cards causing these issues. So I have placed a new sim-card and the problem hasn't appeared in the last 3 days. Before that, the problem was occuring about 3-6 times in one day. It's too early to say this has solved my problem, but it definitely made a difference so far. If it keeps functioning perfectly for the next couple of days I will close this topic.
Symptoms were merely reduced. Phone still shuts down approximately each 2 days. Much better than it was before though. Why would a sim-card change reduce, but not solve the problem? This is starting to hurt my brain.

You may experience sleep of death. What WiFi chipset do you have? I had the same issue on a Murata Wi-Fi chipset.
Yup, Murata chipset. I've googled some more on SoD. I have now installed an app called "Load Monitor" and enabled Wake Lock in preferences. This should prevent the phone from going into deep sleep, apparantly.
Some portugal carrier had a problem with lte sim card or something like that.
I really don't see how a sim card can actually mess with a phone.
Maybe the enabling of some features screws it up.

In my case Samsung Service Team replaced the motherboard. My new MB has a Samsung Electronics wifi chipset. Two weeks now and no SoD.
That sounds good. However, ever since I have installed Load Monitor my phone runs fine. It drains approximately 40% of my entire battery, but it lasts easily until the end of the day.
But again, I shouldn't get too excited. Sim-card change seemed to work in the first few days as well.
Will be continued...
It has been over a week since I have installed Load Monitor. My phone hasn't shut down once. Problem appears to be solved! I hope more people will read this topic, because I have seen a lot of desperate people during my search to a solution.
The only disadvantage is the battery usage of the application. I now have approximately 40-50% at the end of the day instead of 60-70%.
