I'm at work and no access to a proper computer, so searching is a bit difficult at the moment. Would appreciate it if you guys could suggest some options for me
Basically my microUSB port has gone faulty, it won't stay connected to any of my 4 USB cables/chargers. It will charge for a bit, but then stop and make the disconnected sound, without being touched. Sometimes wiggling it can get it start charging again, but it needs to be repaired.
So, I need to unroot and put it back to stock. I'm concerned that trying to flash via Odin is going to end badly, if the port suddenly decides to disconnect itself from the computer in the middle of the process.
What should I do? I'm pretty new to Samsung, this is my first one, and I have heard about a mobile Odin - is this an option? If not, then what are my choices?
Thanks.
Bump.
Any ideas, guys/gals? I'm very reluctant to just try flashing a stock ROM through Odin, because I am almost 100% the USB will disconnect during the process. At the moment I have a working phone, and I don't want to change that to a bricked phone!
If there is no way to do this without a reliable USB connection, then does anyone know what Three UK are like when it comes to warranty repairs on modded phones? Do they even check if it's been flashed with custom firmware?

OK, I found Mobile Odin, I'm gonna buy the pro version. Any "watch out for this" advice? I've literally only used desktop Odin once before, other than that I've just flashed ROMs through recovery....

The same advice you get when you use the desktop Odin. I'd used it and no problems at all. GL

Yeh mobile Odin should be fine, just make sure it has enough charge and you have done all the triangle away etc. you need first. I guess try and follow this guide but with mobile odin - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911726 The unroot guide at the bottom should help
I think the voltage is too low. If you use usb extension cords or other chargers the voltages could get too low and the phone reduces the charging power so charging gets very slow. With a loose contact this is also possible. Try to unplug and plug in the phone.
Whoa guys. Hold your horses. Turn into repair? Never do that until its your last option. This problem isn't uncommon tho, and often its an easy fix as well. What it sounds like is a loose connection. So here's how to fix:
1)Turn the phone off. Its not nessisary but its better safe than sorry right?
2) Get something thin, a pocket knife works great, maybe a saftey pin might do the trick?
3) Locate the microUSB port, and since we are on a i9300 forum, its going to be on the bottom, easy to find.
4) Inside that port, is a panel thatsticks out, this has the gold/ metalic panels that connect with the gold/ metalic pannels on the charger that you try to plug in. There is a very small space bellow it, get your tool (knife / saftey pin) and GENTALLY pry up that pannel. Be ohhhh so careful of it, you really dont need much for it to work again.
5) Once satasfied, test it! Turn on the phone and connect it up for a charge/to the computer. It should be working like new.
This is common when you continuesly use the port. This happened to my old nexus s and was an easy fix.
If this doesn't work for you, it might be worth checking inside the phone. There are some good dissasembly guides on Youtube that an assist you. All you would then need to check is the connections the the MicroUSB port. If one appears damaged (which is kinda unlikely) then you may need to solder. If you feel uncomfortable doing that, then by all means, send it to Samsung.
Hope I helped. Any further questions your better of sending me a PM. Cheers!

Thanks, but I don't think it's a good idea for me to start undertaking physical repairs on a six month old phone. I'll let Three Mobile do it or replace it.
By all means though check the first option in attempting to push the connectors up

when you say that your charging outlet feels loose, do you mean the area that you plug your charging cord into on your phone?
You might need to replace the micro USB port on your phone. I sent my phone to MobileTechVideos and they replaced it for me. It'll cost about $35 for the service though.
Like when I plug my phone in to charge, it kinda wiggles around like it shouldn't. It should just plug in and be tight. Not sure how this happened. Is there anything else that can be done other than sending it in? I don't have another T-Mobile phone to use in the mean time

Could this be due to flashing a new rom? Didnt start until day I flashed D9. Im not sure what to use as a phone in the meantime.

No. I doubt that the installation of a virtual rom would cause the damage of a physical charger jack. However, that day, did you violently yank the charger cable out of the device? Or anything to that sort?

Nope, ive always been really careful with this phone. i think its been getting loose the past 6 months or so. I realllly dont want to get a new phone. I really like my Vibrant
I just want to know that if I send it somewhere that they can actually fix it. I can connect and mount if I need to, but its just odd that I have to hold it a certain way for it to start charging. When i put it down it stops. Tried 3 different chargers, all from tmobile store.
I actually just flashed ICS passion and had the same exact issue. I never thought it could be due to the flash and assumed it was just hardware.
For me, what fixed (or helps) this issue -
Plug the cord in so its sticking in the charging slot as best as possible, than flip the phone on its face while the cord dangles off of a table or whatever you charge it on. (this puts pressure against the cord/phone slot in the reverse direction, and at least for me, would charge the phone)
Hope that made sense and helped!
I have recently been having issues charging my phone, I have to wiggle it in order for the phone to charge and its very annoying. I fear the problem will get so bad in the future that the phone won't charge at all. Also when I connect it to my PC I have to carefully maneuver the cable in a certain way so my PC can detect it show the SD and ExtSD in MY PC.
Should I take it back and get it replaced or have others here had the same issue here and what would you recommend?
I currently have a unlocked bootloader (Hboot is JB) and and S-off.
If I do want to take it back. Can I? and where do I even begin to start getting everything back to stock?
Please help I am willing to donate to anyone that can help me with step by step directions to getting this completed.

take a look at this thread it has some good info on that

Yikes so S-off -->S-On and then back to S-off and that will lock the bootloader again then S-On again
You guys think Verizon will replace it for that reason or it's not even worth to go back to stock everything?
Return it
Try to contact VZN tech support and tell your story.
They're the best bet to secure a replacement Rezound.
If they say Yes, and are sending you a new one, then
do that recipe above and return to 100% stock, Locked.
That way, your time is paid back by insuring no surprise charge
after the return for unlocking or s-0ffing old one.

Thanks wish me luck.
I just had to do the same today for myself. It took me less than an hour to install a fresh RUU, S-On and then S-Off again to get my boot loader back to Locked. Remember they will not say anything for the unit being S-Off but they can refuse warranty replacement for the phone being Unlocked.
Is it the cable that is bad, or the usb connection? If the usb connection is bad then I would definitely contact verizon about a replacement, just tell them your phone won't charge or connect to the pc and you've tried multiple cables.
I send my phones back all the time for loose USB connections like yours.
I'm in my 3 rezound and wife is on 2nd. I have sent them all in unlocked, soff , rooted, running a Rom.
If you TELL the rep on the phone that you did all that they MIGHT not send u a replacement. But why tell them, just talk about the charging problem , tell them u have used multiple cables and chargers, tell them your friend has a rezound and you used his cable and charger that work fine on his phone but won't work with yours.
You will have a replacement tomorrow
All this business about putting everything back to stock is nonsense.
Vzw released a statement saying that they only look for 3 things when accepting a returned unit.
1. Is the shipping package damaged?
2. Does the phone have physical damage. (broken screen, cracked case ..etc. )
3. Does the phone power on?
That's it.. that's all.. nothing else. It is up to the person on the phone to verifiy everything else. If they authorize a replacement, and your phone passes the 3 physical inspections a above, your fine.
Nobody at the warehouse is powering on your phone and looking for root and other garbage.. that's just silly, and Vzw has said as much.
Good luck.

It's the little port on the side of the phone that either lost proper contact with some of the leads inside the board and that's why I have to wiggle it up and down or just a hardware failure not sure how this happen but calling Verizon today and I am going to say it doesn't charge.

Bad usb cord
I go through USB cables very fast. I have had 4 cords wear out on me. I get them form monoprice.com and they are inexpensive. The allow for movement at the connection.
However, if you are using the stock USB cable then this may cause damage to your phone as it has a tighter fit and movement at the connection is less likely as is more likely to transfer any movement into the plug mount in the phone. The plug is not the same as a standard usb plug which has a looser fit and always for movement stress to occur at the connection instead of inside your phone.
After verifying that a new cord will not work and getting your replacement, I recommend not using the stock USB cord on a regular basis. I only use it for connecting to my PC for Modding the phone, where I want a 100% secure connection. I use the standard USB cable for sync'ing to my PC and all other non PC related connections.
From monoprice, I bought a 15ft cord to use with my HDMI Converter. Works great.
A month or two ago I started experiencing problems while connecting my S2 to the PC or laptop using the data cable.
When I connect the cable to my S2 on the PC or laptop it comes up with the balloon messages in the system tray:
USB device not recognised.
Then a short while later it comes up with another balloon message:
This device can perform faster.
Sometimes while transferring data, it will disconnect and the file transfer fails.
Sometimes if the cable is moved slightly it will cause the device to disconnect from the PC.
And, of course, the file transfers are much slower than they should be and much slower than they used to be.
GT-I9100 Rooted.
I9100XXKKI3
Gingerbread 2.3.6 Stock (Frankenstein)
I haven't touched any ROM or flashed anything on this in like over 8 months so it's nothing to do on that front.
I removed micro SD card and tried reconnecting again, still the same problem.
I've tried different computers, still the same problem.
I've used different cables, still the same problems. Tried enabling and disabling USB debugging. Same problem still remains.
The USB cables and computer and laptop work fine with my S3.
All the correct drivers are installed for the S2.
I'm resigned to thinking it's a hardware issue as I've exhausted other options. Is there a simple fix or will this need sending back to Samsung?
I've had the phone over a year now but someone told me the warranty is two years?
All help appreciated guys. Thanks in advance.

Probably because his USB port doesn't currently work properly.
@OP, this is often caused by a dirty or faulty USB port. You can try cleaning it, but you may need to replace it.
Try cleaning it out with a dry toothbrush first.
If that doesn't work, take the battery out, and try cleaning the port with a small q-tip with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol; let it dry for a while after that, then replace the battery.
If THAT doesn't work, you'll probably need to replace the part for the USB port.
If your warranty is still good, you could try to go that route, but you'll need to unroot your phone. Otherwise, I've heard it runs about $15 for the part, and you can replace it yourself. If you don't feel up to it, you can have a cell repair shop or Samsung service center do it for you, but it will probably be significantly more expensive than $15.
My opinion based on your description is the USB socket on the phone is wearing out/damaged. The USB socket is on a small circuit board separate from the main logic board. It's easy to replace and the part is cheap on EBay. Search for a disassembly/tear down video and judge whether you can do it yourself.

Thanks for the very quick responses guy. They were very thorough as well.
I will look into cleaning the port and if it still doesn't work I'll consider having it repaired. My soldering skills were excellent but I haven't done it for a few years, so may leave it in someone else's hands.
I haven't upgraded to ICS as I was very happy with my phone at the time. Also, a couple of friends who had upgraded to ICS on their S2 regretted it due to numerous problems, which put me off upgrading.

I've had a look on the Samsung website here:
w ww.samsung.com/uk/support/warranty/warrantyInformation.do?page=POLICY.WARRANTY
It seems as though the warranty period on my phone is 24 months so I might just get it done via Samsung.
I'll contact them in the morning and see where I stand. If not, then the replacement USB board connected by a simple ribbon cable sounds like a doddle. I've seen a grade A condition part on ebay for about £8 delivered.
Thank you once again.

This is a Cable problem. The USB port of your device is wider now, that's why the cable doesn't fit well. Buy a micorUsb cable for blackberry, it's always very full and thick, then use it to connect your phone. The issue should be resolved.
I once had the same problem with my Nokia N8 and using a Samsung cable (which looks fuller and thicker) solved it.
Yeah warranty should be 2 years BUT youll have to unroot it first if your sending it to them.
They may also wipe your phone and stick on 4.0.4.
If you get the board yourself, check the number is going to be the same i.e the spare one I have here is GT-I9100 rev2.2.
Also other people have got a replacement board and the mic doesnt work(think the boards are sold as refurbished).
So its up to you which option you go for.

An alternative would be to fix this yourself. The flexprint with the USB connector is available on ebay for some $ (quite cheap). If you are unsure your skills will suffice to replace the flexprint then have a look at youtube; there are some clips showing how this is done.
If you have a friend who repairs phones you can ask him to try the method above.... Its easy

thanks for replies ok i will give it a try
Are you sure it's broken, and not just dirty. I've had the same problem before, but after some cleaning it worked again. If you want to know how to clean it, watch this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjnXcFG3674)
Other problems can arise if you change the usb board.
I have an S2 G9100 that developed a peculiar problem:
-It refuses to charge through a variety of charges/ports/cables.
-When connected to a charger or USB port, it turns on!
-Connecting the phone to the PC via USB does nothing. No notification on the phone, no filesharing possible. If the phone is turned off, a notification for a malfunctioning device comes on the PC while the phone [auto]boots.
-In a twist of luck, ODIN is able to see and FLASH the phone via the otherwise useless USB connection!
Tried several (4) different batteries and the behavior isn't affected. (The same batteries work perfectly in another SII)
After a lot of research on the net I couldn't find any really useful info among various good suggestions so I turn to the specialists..
TRIED:
Changing batteries didn't help.
Updating lineageOS 14.1 that was on the phone didn't change anything.
Reflashing the original firmware (4.1.2) through Odin was also in vain.
NOT tried:
I noticed a thread here with the suggestion to remove a capacitor for a similar (not identical though) case but I need to ask around before resorting to such drastic measures!
Bending the flap in the USB port doesn't seem necessary since Odin is working fine.
Replacing the bottom board with the USB port.
Any suggestions and thoughts will be greatly appreciated!

It should be natively supported as far as I know
But if OTG is broken + data transfer works + charging is broken then I think it's time to change or get rid of that OTG capacitor
Sent from my whyred using XDA Labs
First of all thanks for the fast responses!
This capacitor is there only to provide power to devices connected through OTG? Removing it instead of replacing it will leave me without working OTG but I should expect all other functions to come back to normal?
Do we have its characteristics so I can try to get a replacement?
(Also the broken home button is such a pain without ADB working, getting to recovery is a mission impossible)
no easy solutions for me!
I finally got to removing the capacitor only to find out that the behavior of the phone hasn't changed at all.
Luckily I didn't loose the connection via Odin, so I can still flash stuff to it!
The fact that it turns on when connected to USB charger (while having a battery with enough juice) must mean that something entirely different from what I was able to find online so far..I wish I had a clue how to proceed. Is there any cryptic partition that doesn't get replaced when installing official firmware in .zip format through Odin (AP button)? I'd like to be sure that I have restored the most low level pieces of software.
That a very weird issue. It"s either daughter board damage or a chip that is responsible for charging is fried

Yeah it is. And this phone has one of the most pristine interiors I've seen. No humidity sticker is activated and no visual signs of trouble besides the usual battery corrosion issue (limited on the battery for the time being).
The +5,3 voltage from the charger makes it out of the daughter board and data communication works through Odin so I have nothing to blame the daughter board for, but probably something hardware-wise has gone wrong since it turns on whenever the charger is connected and just reboots if you try to turn it off.
Is there a better way to make sure that we are good on the software side other than restoring the original firmware through a single zip file from Odin? (I have made all the backups I could through recovery such as efs, modem.img etc)
A clean reflash wouldn't hurt. One more thing. Install TWRP, boot to TWRP and connect the charger. I wonder if TWRP will recognise the charger
