Is It possible to pair a SGP (I have a rooted 4.2) with a non-smartphone style phone? I'd like to be able to send/recieve texts on my SGP from my cell number. I have a LG Cosmos on Verizon in the US.

AFAIK, it's not possible, if you had an Android smartphone, you could use Tablet Talk to add this functionality.

Hi there.
I've just bought a XTZ LTE and have been wondering if installing Cyanogenmod would make it possible to call from it?
I love how it is now, but I would prefer if I could make/recieve phonecalls too.
It's either Cyanogenmod or Skype. Would prefer to keep my old number and not pay 2 phone bills.

I would also like to know if this is possible?
Unless you guys are in Japan, which is the only country in the world so far where carriers have implemented voice calling over LTE, rather than GSM or CDMA - the rom you run on your XTZ isn't going to make any difference because to make regular phone calls over GSM or CDMA you need to have the actual hardware radio for that and this tablet doesn't have it.

But the SGP321 supports both GSM and WCDMA in addition to LTE, so that's not really helpful. There is however the question of whether the modem itself supports voice over GSM/WCDMA as the radio could be either the same or similar to the one in the Xperia Z phone.

WCDMA is just an alternative name for UMTS. It's a 3G data connection protocol. AFAIK no carrier in the world uses that for voice calls.I was not aware LTE version of XTZ had GSM radio, but I checked online and it turns out to be true. Therefore, it's possible to modify XTZ LTE firmware to unlock voice calling, but I doubt very much Cyanogenmod did it. It would have been big news and would have been all over tech blogs and it also would have been listed in CM nightlies changelog for XTZ LTE: http://10.1.cmxlog.com/?device=pollux
Thank you for answering.
I found a different approach.
First I tried Skype. Payed for a number and everything but found out that Skype doesn't support recieving SMS.
So now I've ordered a 4G-subscription to my XTZ.
Using my old Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 3G with my current subscription I can send all calls and texts to my XTZ through the app: Tablet Talk.
That way I can make and recieve calls on my XTZ through my Galaxy Tab 2 without problem.
There might be around ~400 ms lag on calls if they aren't on the same network, but I can live with that.

Are you sure on this? I'm pretty sure there is no app or rom that will allow you to send/receive voice to another device for use with a GSM call.
I think tablet talk just allows you to control calls from a tablet device and send them to a bluetooth headset but won't actually let you use the tablet as if it were a blutetooth headset (bluetooth profiles are missing/not supported in android I believe)
Does that make any sense?

After hours of research I found you that you're right.
So I've forwarded calls to my Skype-number.
Much easier.
I can tell you that on my new SGP321 I am able to send/recieve SMS - I only realised because EE sent me a message to welcome me to the network.

Sorry to tag onto the end of an old thread, but the basic question of phone calls via the XTZ still seems to be hanging in the air. I've got a T-mobile voice/text/mobile internet sim in my SGP321, and I can send and receive texts via this subscription.
I just don't understand why phone calls can't be enabled: the tablet obviously has audio hardware (microphone and speakers), so support for audio is obviously built into the firmware; it accepts a SIM with a package including voice minutes; it apparently supports the same GSM spec as the Samsung Galaxy 10 (which has phone capability) (I'd give a link to the comparison, but apparently as a new user I'm not allowed to do so!)
So what's the problem? I guess it comes down to whether or not it's caused by an omission in hardware or software. If the former, we're stuck; if the latter - well, surely it should be possible - somehow?

UMTS is not just a data connection protocol; it's an entire 3G system. WCDMA is not "just another name for UMTS"; it's best thought of one of three different signal types UMTS can use. (WCDMA, aka UMTS-FDD, is used by almost all UMTS operators.)
Virtually every network operator on Earth with an active UMTS network uses it for voice, with a few exceptions (two or three Internet-only operators). They would be completely stupid not to - UMTS provides between 40 and 60 active voice calls per sector, vs. GSM's 7.
AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile, EE, Vodafone, Orange, O2, you name it; if it operates UMTS, you can bet voice calls are running over UMTS.
Having Android tablet with 3G and capable of making phone calls I wonder if I could use small standard GSM phone as bluetooth dialer for tablet? This is to avoid using bulky device for phone calls.
Yes, there is selection of bluetooth dialers from $30 and up on ebay, but could I use small plain GSM phone with bluetooth (and without SIM) for that purpose? Or some tiny Android smartphone?
Thanks for any tips
Hello,
I do like the Gear S and wanna buy the ATT version on unlocked version.
But I don't want a data plan on it, I want it connected to my phone just like a Gear 2 or Android Wear watch via Bluetooth.
Can I just do that and have the messages and phone calls forwarded to the watch?

Yep. Works perfectly well without a SIM card.

like stated by vasko, I also went with att since ti was the lowest and 99.5% it is connected via bt to my sprint note2, so there was no need to buy the other gear s which are more expensive. I just recent got a h2o sim which work off att network just for emergencies when I am out of sprint range I have att coverage which we all know is much much better then sprint....
Hi All,
I was researching for a tablet that would work on T Mobile USA ( insert my current sim, will t mobile charge more? ) LTE network as well as allow me to make and receive phone calls using the headphones.
It appears the Z4 wifi LTE version is the one. Is there any other models/brands cheaper priced that would suffice?
Many thanks
I have an unlocked international Z4 tablet now and am using my T Mobile sim in for data usage. Unfortunately mine does not have the native phone app on it so I cannot make traditional phone calls, but can use hangouts no problem. My bill did not change, just put the sim in, made sure the APN settings were correct and I have not had an issue.

Wow, thanks for chiming in appreciate it. I was looking on Amazon, and most questions I found and answered were that this model could dial out directly.
I was under the impression that US specific models were disabled to make calls but no the international versions.
Any other users possibly care to chime in and let me know if you can make calls with the Z4 SGP771 LTE +WIFI model?
Just came across this post on sony website..

I got the same response from Sony when I sent them a message asking about the phone app.
"I just received information that in the country where your SGP711 was sold, i'm afraid SGP771 does not have a built-in dialer and support for phone calls"
I have seen that you can flash firmware or different builds and supposedly this will have the default phone app.

I could be wrong, but I think its the SIM card / Network disabling the dialer perhaps. Glad I didnt cough up that much money , appreciate your reply a lot. :good:
I have created a list which still not complete showing all the models , but so far it appears the S korean model has the voice dialler function disabled, still not sure which ones work for voice over cellular and which dont. Id be interested if folks could add their model identifier and upc code and state in post if voice calls are possible over cell,

You could flash any international ROM for the Tablet or get hold of a dialer app.
FWIW: I am on the wifi version of the tablet (SGP 712) but just for the fun of it tried VOIP successfully. I use a phone for cell usage and VOIP.

Yes, but I primarily wanted to know if the LTE has a dialler , not VoIP.
According to Sony USA the us spec one does support voice via cellular, not sure I believe them however. Any have Xperia Z4 Tablet Sgp771us/B 1303-5541

i think it won´t depend on whether it has a dialer or not. the lte version is capable of making phone calls - period.
if the dialer was disabled or deleted so easily flash an international rom version (very easy with flash tool) or
install a dialer of you choice from the play store

Below is the version I recently bought from an amazon seller open box / used as their new stock was sourced form S Korea and apparantly is dialler disabled. My version I believe is to be from China / HK region.
Below is the one I managed to find that has the dialler enabled ( got lucky ) Using Xperia Service Menu App from playstore:
customization ver 1296-4830 R9C
phone software: 1292-0698_32.2.A.0.305
Global=LTECA- user ( non dialer version would state Global=nodial-user ) I think

Hi all...
I recently, and mistakenly, bought the AT&T version of the G Pad 8.0 X.....it was a mistake because I didn't realize I wouldn't be able to use simple dialer and sms apps.
Can anyone PLEASE educate me on one or both of the questions below?
1) What has AT&T done to prevent dialers and sms apps from interacting directly with the LTE interface
2) Is it a certainty that the v521 ROM will not work on the v520? Based on LTE bands supported by each I assume it's different radio hardware but wanted to see if I could get more details from anyone here.
At this point I've thrown away $75 on this tablet because not being able to send and receive sms is a deal breaker for me and I don't know if I feel like going through the hassle of trying to resell it. I'm willing to be a guinea pig in trying to install the v521 ROM on the v520.... IF there's a chance it could work.
Is there any way to receive sms messages from my carrier via data only? I'm told that Hangouts used to have this functionality but no longer does?
Appreciate anyone who will take a moment to share their knowledge....thank you very much folks
Kevin
These devices don't have voice capability. The modem is not configured to do so.
Now for SMS, they do have that ability. If you don't have an SMS app, get one. Googles SMS app, messaging. Blue icon. The tmo ROM has SMS baked in.
I have both the T-Mobile V-521 and AT&T V-520. Actually, I have a working V-521, a broken V-521, and two working V-520s.
I use T-Mobile, and I have been frustrated with the AT&T version's lack of SMS and hotspot. Though I can live without the hotspot, I use SMS a lot, and I'd really like to have it on the AT&T version.
I've tried installing a number of SMS apps on the V-520, and no luck at all. They all act as if there's no hardware available to use for SMS, and give a variety of errors (or no error at all) and do not work for me.
I took apart the broken V-521, and I saw a series of jumpers labeled "V521", "V520" and a few others, though I don't recall which. (I'll take it apart again and see.)
I've wondered if these jumpers turn on/off hardware features, or access different ROMs or other model-specific features.
Would changing the jumper from V520 to V521 give it the "personality" of the T-Mobile version, and activate SMS and hotspot?
I'd be willing to "sacrifice" one of the AT&T tablets, because I don't use it at all, due to the lack of SMS.
I'm also available to analyze either model, at someone's direction, to see what is going on with them.
I'm happy to cooperate in almost any way, to help those of us with the AT&T version get more functionality from it!
