[Q] Lost GPS?! Flashed to Ntelos/Rooted Stock - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

One of my customers has two T-Bolts, both have been flashed to Ntelos.
He had me root both phones, and both are still on the latest stock software, with root added, and both devices lost GPS at the same time. Ive tried every fix I can think of and Im not getting anywhere.
As I dont actually own the device its a little more difficult to troubleshoot than a device Im more familiar with, so maybe someone out there can help me out?
It would be greatly appreciated
::MODS:: Im pretty sure this is Q&A worthy, but if not please move.

Still looking for an answer if anybody can help?

If these phones are flashed to run on ntelos network. That's probably your answer right there. When flashing a phone to other carriers not everything tends to work.

Trust me, I definitely understand that. We flash a ton of phones in my shop, but the thing is that these two in particular were working fine after the flash and one day out of the blue they BOTH lost connection to GPS. at the same time. only one of them is his phone, the other he doesnt have service on and uses it as a MID, but he was able to get gps on wifi up until this point.
just kind of strange. Ive explained to him alreasdy about the flash and things not working all the time, but it is still strange to me that they went out at the same time

Maybe Google changed the address that the phone uses to access GPS? Maybe try the GPS fix which is somewhere in the dev section?

Interesting Problem

Everyone else may not find this to be an interesting problem, but I do.
I have a rooted HBOOT 1.40 HTC Evo 3d that I got when the phone was released. I use the original TWRP that was out when the phone achieved perm-root. I've utilized multiple ROMs including: Synergy, CM7, MIUI, Eternity, and a few others. I have been using MIUI for a good two months or so until this recent issue.
Onto the issue, when someone calls me I can sometimes hear them and talk to them. So sometime when I am called my phone actually works as a phone. Other times, the other person's line keeps ringing and ringing. This happens when I call someone as well. When I call my voicemail [1 then call], I get nothing. When I go into the diag everything seems correct. I'm not super-down with all that side of things, but it seems right. I've tried placing a call long enough just in case it's an error 16 for calling [texting is fully operational].
I've NANDed back to a Sense Rom [Warm TwoPointThree] and updated my PRL, Firmware, etc as much as possible and still no dice.
So does anyone have anyway they could help me? Right about now I'm thinking unrooting is the best option. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Not sure if it will work but you can try updating profile then prl in settings. If that doesn't work you can try a data restore. Also if you aren't on the most current radios probably wouldn't hurt to flash that either. Just tossing ideas out there for you.
N if none of that works ask Sprint to reset it n tell them what's going on might be on their end as well

Well I'm setting up ADB right now to flash the newest radio. Unroot here shortly. And if all else fails I'll call sprint. And if still not a no-go, looks like I might just use that upgrade on my other line for a new phone. Might hold out for an ICS or something and downgrade to a *eek*feature phone*eek*. Meh.
i had something similar to this a few months back. it was actually due to sprints towers having some issues. it was happening to my 3d and my wifes og evo, but not to the shift on our account. it was weird. but i would totally call sprint and see whats up sounds like its them.

That's what I had said originally. Hmm. Ok. Thanks for the input.
EDIT
I meant thought. :\
UPDATE:
The issue was Google Voice integration. The app itself didn't do it, if it had then it would've been fixed in the unroot process. It is nice knowing I can unroot, but this scare was .
Thanks for all the help guys.

[Q] My worst failure with Android.

I don't know who's going to read this and/or if there will be any comments to it. I just want to take this horrible frustration and downheartedness out of my chest. I hope this will be of some help for anybody out there trying the same.
Today, I've hit what I hope will be the lowest most bitter point for me as an Android aficionado. Ever since the G1 was announced and came out, I jumped on the wagon and pre-ordered from Tmo (I was a customer at that time). As soon as I had it in my hands, I began learning about its customization, user experience, etc. I came here and learned how to root it (although I registered a bit later). I've owned four G1s, two G2s, an HTC Sensation and two Tbolts. All of them motivated me to dare tweaking and customizing more and more. Always with more or less satisfying results at the end, after overcoming the always present unexpected troubles. This time, however... I feel like I've got a pretty ugly dose of failure.
<s>I'll try to make it short.</s> My in-laws came from China. They had very old phones and wanted to get iPhones. However, the screen ended up seeming pretty small for them compared to my Tbolt. They asked me if I could help them get a good phone. I came up with a couple of choices. The HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy S2. After thinking about it, I went for the S2. Now, it was a matter of picking the right (GSM) one. Either the ATT or Tmo version. I did more research and picked the ATT (I777) version, since "that's closer" to the international version.
I purchased two of them, still sealed, from Craigslist. I just loved them! Immediately, I purchased the unlocking codes for both. I got home and inserted a Tmo SIM to test them. I couldn't wait to hand them over to them. Then, things started to go just wrong in every way...
I was shocked to see the S2 had no Chinese option in language. The only Asian language available was Korean. At some point later, I realized that the Chinese options in my other phones were probably due to HTC being a Taiwanese company. I kept searching for an answer and ended up trying a couple of apps from the market like Morelocale2, etc. But they only translated about %30 of the whole. Failure.
I kept reading and learned I could flash a ROM with the language included. After more and more reading and rooting it, I had two choices. I could flash the Hong Kong or Singapore version of the phone. Those two come with the language already installed. Even though I don't know Chinese, I managed to get some help from a dev acquaintance and found the HK (I9100) version that even had the ICS version. I followed the tut and flashed it using Odin. When it booted it looked all good. Looking at that Chinese all over the place even made me smile. I sighed and said "I'm done"... little did I know my failure was far from avoided.
First of all, I learned that only two of the four buttons work due to the kernel. Only Back and menu work. I tried to see the good side. It'd be easier for them to get used to using only two buttons. I started installing more goodies, like Chinese input (by strokes, not by keyboard), even a wonderful app I found called Buttonsavior to replace the physical buttons. I was "done" and handed over the phone; only one of them. I wanted to be sure of the procedure to go, before doing the other. Then, I realized something horrific...
As they were trying the phone, poking menus here and there to become familiar with the UI; suddenly, while testing making a phone call, I heard that phrase: "It has no sound!" I wanted to kick myself out of my own disbelief... I thought "OMG! It was so hard hard to get a hold of that ROM. Now what?" I sadly understood I'd have to restore and go back to trying to find a solution to the partially translated gingerbread version. Then, I restored and went cold when I realized what had happened.
During the restoring, I was quite glad I had backed up in case of a disaster. When I booted up and just out of curiosity of how good the sound of the call was supposed to sound, I made a call. Guess what? IT DIDN'T WORK EITHER! This is when I started panicking! I thought "OK, I restored, now what?" I quickly did a wipe, factory reset, even unrooting back to the stock ROM. Did it work? No!! No audio call! "OMG!! The phone I just bought on Craigslist it's defective!"
I didn't give up and let that make me feel down (completely). I said "OK, after all this struggle and time, at least I'm going to make the other one work." I took the other phone and made a call to finally hear the quality of the audio call. It was very good to say the least. It was very nice and clear. At this point I started to feel half of an epic failure. In less than 5 mins the phone was rooted and being updated to the HK ICS ROM. I went as quickly as I could through the initial setup. I hit the home screen and the first thing I touched was the phone call icon, dialed and waited to see what the phone was supposed to be like. Then, the half failure, became full failure. I don't remember feeling that down for something before. I threw in the towel...
The audio didn't work... that's when I realized I had just messed up two brand new S2s I bought out of a stranger's hands. I've thought about it, and I got the feeling something can be done, but at this point I'm not sure what. I feel like my brain has dried up. I struggled with this for about a week, having a massive headache at least three times. But the story didn't end there...
In a feeling of total defeat, I did the last thing I could think of... I called tech support and tell them about the lack of sound. After lot of talking and pushing for some solution (they wanted me to take it back to the 'store'), they said the warranty was good for another eleven months. They've got my info and emailed me a prepaid UPS label. You think think it's a happy ending? No. You want to know why? I can't even reset the binary counter. I even got a jig connector to do the job, but of course 'for some strange reason', it won't do it. If this isn't an example of a perfect failure, then what is it? Total lost: $900.
I'm not as good as most guys here, but I like to read and use common sense as much as I can. This time I thought to my self "I'm a dumbass, what else can I say?" Aren't I?
Thanks for reading,
Edit: Yes, I did flash a stock ROM.
Hi buddy,
I just read your story.. U will both phone work again, I am pretty sure! Try to get some experienced help! Fully restoring by flashing a stocks rom should be the help... Make sure I do it correct!

I can tell you right off the bat that the reason the Home and Search buttons didn't work on your i777 (AT&T S2) is because you flashed an i9100 ROM. The i9100 has a physical home button and no search button. i9100 ROMs ARE compatible with the i777 since other than that they are identical phones, but you need to fix the key mappings. As for the audio, I'm not sure.
I don't know if I forgot to mention it, but I did flash a stock ROM.
I may not have the greatest knowledge of these things but are you sure it's not a radio issue? Have you tried flashing a different radio (one that's compatible with the ROM and region you want to install)? I know I mate who had an issue with calls after flashing a new ROM to his new S2 and the problem turned out to be the radio. Once he flashed a new one (it may have been the factory one he flashed back on to it) it all worked.

Man that's a crazy story. Not sure if I over read it or not cuz I'm baked or not but maybe they were tinkered with before you got them? Like did audio work originally? I know I'm sure glad I found the sbf files for my old OG, since they've saved me numerous times being able to flash to out of the box status. Sounds like you might've jumped into it too quickly without ironing out all the details. Shoot I know it took me like 2 weeks thinking about just rooting my phone to finally do it a couple years ago.

Yes, that was my first thought after flashing that ICS regional ROM: the radio. And that was the reason why I decided to flash the unrooted stock ROM. But like I said, nothing! I'm sure there was nothing wrong with the phones. The second was working fine before I did it. I actually tested it over and over, kind of like to make me feel better that at least that one of them was going to work.
Hi, are you getting no sound at all or just no sound in call.
I would suggest flashing back using Odin. I've had some issue's when flashing using Odin for customers. Some have had non EU devices and wanted EU firmware flashed. After flashing i also experienced sound issues.
I found that flashing back to the earliest possible stock Samsung Rom helped in my case.
hope this help you out bro

Like I said. The reason why I thought it was a radio issue (and flashed a stock ROM via Odin) was because they do have sound, but no during a call.

I'd still suggest trying to flash a radio separately. When it happened to my mate he still had sound issues after flashing back to a stock ROM and it was only fixed by flashing a separate radio zip.

I think trying that is the only thing that separates me from having spent $900 in, virtually, two paper weights. I got this strange feeling it might be a fate prank. If so, I'll probably take a break from this kind of endeavors.
The only time I've done a radio update was when updating my G1 to 1.6. The radio file was hard to find though...

While trying to find the right radio, it just hit me. Should I use a chinese (ZS, ZC) version? I feel like a total n00b asking this, but... does the baseband has to do with roaming or something like that?
Thanks,

The modem firmware has to match the hardware. You need to the one that came with the phone. The frequencies are physically programmed into the radio and flashing a radio with a different frequency will make it not work until you flash the correct one.

Does that mean, that there are worldwide phones with different hardware chips? Isn't there any chance to reconfigure these chips?

The phones are identical in terms of hardware specs (i9100s I mean) but each region may have one that picks up different frequencies. No you can't reconfigure it unless the radio supports it which is rare and not the case for the S2. Like I said flash the radio that came with the phone. You most likely flashed a ROM for an S2 that was a different region and came with a different radio. The software for the radio is trying to tell the radio to tune to a frequency it doesn't support. Get it?
Hopefully you made a nandroid backup before you did anything and can restore it. Also you can always play around with it in English and then change the language to Chinese when you are done if you are able to find a rom that has the language support.

Problems after updating my HTC Evo 3D

I hate to just come here and ask for help, but I haven't found any solution over the past two weeks, and I didn't see any similar threads in this forum.
I have an HTC Evo 3D through Sprint. Two and a half weeks ago I downloaded the update. The update appears to have worked in the sense that the layout and many features are tweaked a little. However, since I updated it, whenever I turn it on it turns itself off and then back on every few minutes. The reason for this is that I am in Australia so it can't connect to the network to complete the update. I have been here for nearly two months, and won't be back in the US until mid-November. I have solely been using my phone with WiFi for email, internet, etc, and I would like to be able to use it for this purpose again. I called Sprint but they weren't able to help me because there is no Sprint service or Sprint stores in Australia.
Does anyone know of a way to fix the phone? If I factory reset it, will it come back without this issue, or will I just have a phone that doesn't work and lost its memory? Would there be a way to fix it by rooting it?
All help is appreciated. I'm not very knowledgeable on this kind of stuff, I apologize.
Thank you, have a great day.

Here's a post with download links and some information about running the Sprint ICS 2.89 RUU. You didn't say if you are S-ON unlocked or S-OFF and the procedure is slightly different between those two states. If you have never HTC unlocked your phone and rooted your can just run the RUU.exe as if you were S-OFF.
ramjet73
I wonder if there is any way you can get an active Airave to connect to? Sprint obviously wouldn't issue you one in Aus, but perhaps you could have a friend or family get one, activate it, then send it to you in Aus.
Wait....are you saying as long as I have an Airave, I can get service all over the world?

Well, not sure. It does require GPS signal, so it may detect anything not in the US and refuse to work. It was just a thought. Anyone else try to use an Airave outside the US?
It sounds like you aren't rooted and haven't done anything outside of the normal update for the phone.
When you say that the it turns off and back on, do you mean that the phone is simply rebooting randomly? If so, then I think a custom rom might help you.
I don't think the factory reset will fix this for you btw. I also wouldn't try it unless I got a really good backup (which is pretty easy once rooted).
Thanks everyone for your help. I ended up doing an RUU flash using the info ramjet73 gave, and it appears to be working fine except that I lost all of my memory. I couldn't get it backed up before I did it, but I'd rather have a working phone without my old contacts and stuff than have it not work.

[Q] Intermittent Mobile Network Loss

Good Morning All,
I'm wondering if anyone would be able to assist me. I recently installed CM10.1 on my I777 and all was fine until this afternoon when it suddenly began losing mobile network connectivity. One minute I have full bars, the next, nothing; it happens every few seconds or so. I thought that maybe it was the rom causing issues or the modem (had UCKH7 installed at the time), so I decided to revert back to Stock ICS (the build compiled by AJ Newkirk, normal, rooted stock), but the problem still remained. I tried flashing a different modem other than the UCLE5 that comes as default in the ICS build (flashed UCKH7), but that didn't work either. Finally, I decided to use creepyncrawly's guide and revert back to stock Gingerbread but still the problem remains. At this point I'm wondering if there is anything else that can be done to get the phone fully functional again; maybe it needs to be opened or something? Getting it replaced via warranty is out of the question due to my location so if anyone has any ideas or suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

I would highly advise you that it's your network provider, not your phone. Had the same problem traveling over here in Afghanistan suddenly. Called the provider and they fixed it. So I suggest waiting a day if you can, then calling customer support.

I'm not so sure, because I tried my wife's sim in the phone and still had the same problem, but both our sims work fine in her S2 and an old Blackberry 9300 I had laying around. I'll still give it a try though... thanks for the response.
Another possible thing to try that has worked wonders for me is to go to recovery. Advanced. Fix Permissions. I had my signal cutting out in the middle of calls and that fixed it for me. Hope it helps.

Just to be clear, there was no physical impact to the phone, right?
Flashing new modems can make a difference, but it's pretty marginal; it won't create signal.

Nope, no impact to the device whatsoever.
FWIW, I tried swapping the rear of mine and the wife's S2's since the antenna is located at the base of the device along with the loudspeaker. I got the same problem when I did. I placed the rear of mine onto hers and her device gets full signal strength. Therefore, I have to conclude that there is something wrong with the board itself on mine. I'll probably try and see if I can get an I777 off of Ebay for parts and make the necessary changeouts. If it's too pricey, I'll just abandon it and get a new phone. Thanks all for the suggestions/assistance guys. :good:

So what you're suggesting is that there may be a remote possibility that something in CM10.1 is triggering this issue? If someone else chimes in with the same issue, then we could say for sure, but otherwise we just look like two random cases. Did you try any of the stuff I did? Maybe you might have more luck than me.

Lol... I hear you man... I think I've tried everything I can think of except throwing it against the wall or dropping it a couple feet off the ground.. lol.
Just an update.... I did some more flashing between returning it to stock rooted GB, then ICS, then I decided to flash ShoStock 3. Afterwards I put the phone to charge since the battery had run down to about 20% and when I checked back a few minutes later, it was super hot.. so hot in fact, that the phone refused to charge the battery stating that it was too hot to do so. So I unplugged it, removed the rear cover to allow it to cool down and left it alone for a while. Later on when it was much cooler, I checked it and noticed that the cell reception was no longer cutting in and out, but I was still skeptical. However, after a couple hours, as of this post, it still works as it should, even after rebooting. I plan to flash a different rom tomorrow to see if it holds out which may be kinda risky, but after what happened today, I'm confident that it will.:fingers-crossed:

Just an update.... I did some more flashing between returning it to stock rooted GB, then ICS, then I decided to flash ShoStock 3. Afterwards I put the phone to charge since the battery had run down to about 20% and when I checked back a few minutes later, it was super hot.. so hot in fact, that the phone refused to charge the battery stating that it was too hot to do so. So I unplugged it, removed the rear cover to allow it to cool down and left it alone for a while. ...you've got one messed up phone.
I know right? It didn't hold out anyways and is still giving the problem, but I finally figured out after doing some serious googling, reading and part swapping that it's the board that is causing all the problems. I was thinking of ordering a replacement board I found on ebay, but it would make more sense to just put the extra and buy another s2 on auction.... They're pretty cheap now anyways.

I was using AJ Newkirk's Semi 18 and I experienced occasional loss of the cell radio - no calls or texts. A reboot would fix. I think it also happened when I used a different ICS ROM but it never happened when my S2 was stock. I'm now using ShoStock3, a JB based ROM, and haven't had any occurrence. In fact, this is the fastest and most stable ROM I've ever used.
Just wanted to chime in. My network loss is fixed now. Turns out I had a dying sim card! It fully died today overnight so I woke up with no network at all. I thought my phone ****ted out but bam! New sim card and I'm golden

Nice... glad to hear your issue is fixed!! I'm getting a GT-I9100 next week for a good deal from a friend that wants to buy a Galaxy Nexus and I've swapped phones with the wife so she'll get the one I'm buying. All she ever does is go on facebook anyways....

[Q] question about flashing for frawg

Hey guys I have a quick question. I've done some searching and am not sure about this. I bought a evo 3d from a friend of mine. It was a sprint phone that is now on frawg. Last week the internet and everything worked fine. I activated it under my number this week and now the internet no longer works. It just says no connection when you try anything internet related if you are not on WiFi. I called frawg and they said it was the flash coming out. Is this something I can fix myself or do I really have to pay these guys $50 to fix the flash.
Come on guys somebody's gotta know about this.I've been googling but don't really understand what I need

Going to need more info before anyone can attempt to help. What exactly was flashed (ROM, radios, etc)? Where did the content that was flashed come from, along with a link to it. No one can help without being able to see what it is.
That being said, a flash doesn't "come out."
Your friend should be able to help you or have the info. Maybe paying the $50 to have frawg fix it would be best as it seems you aren't familiar with flashing.
It is running the stock rom 4.0.3. As far as I know the ntelos radio and prl were flashed by an employee at the ntelos store. He has tried to take it up there for me but she took a few days off this week. I know a little bit about flashing ROMs but I don't know if this is like a ROM or completely different.
So is this something I can do myself?
It is if you have the radios and prl to flash

Can those be found on line? Apparently the person that flashed it does not work there anymore or they just don't want to fix it. It looks like I'm stuck fixing it my self

If it worked before you activated it on your account and you didn't change the phone (flash new rom or RUU) then it isn't the phone. Like I said before, a flash doesn't "come out" like they told you. Flashing the radios over again won't fix it. To me it sounds like it's service related, and only frawg can do something about it. They need to reprovision your phone from their end. The only other thing to check is the network setting on your phone and make sure that mobile data is enabled.
No I haven't tried to flash a Rom or anything on the phone. I also do not receive voicemail notifications. I have talked to a few people at their customer service and in the store and they all say the same thing. ill try to call after work about what you said. Mobile network was enabled but it does. Not connect.
