ROM speed - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it the kernel or the ROM that makes each firmware fast

combination as speed combines from a combination of files from both in the kernal and firmware.

its the Kernel which makes the Diff in speed, if its supported by the Rom then the speed will be Amazing!!

Get a rom/kernel with a red theme. Everyone knows red's the fastest colour.

I think that MistahBungle is trolling... haha XD but I will search for a red one anyway thanks =)

In all seriousness, the 'speed' of the phone performing a particular task at any given moment is dependent on so many variables. The rom, the kernel, how well written (or not) the app you're using is. How your phone is setup.
Best thing to do is experiment with different roms/kernels, governors, cpu settings, etc. What works for me won't necessarily work for you & VV.

Install SetCPU and lower your max. It will buy you a tiny bit more battery life, in theory, if that is what you are after.

I have SetCpu already, and with all the profiles and changes in advance settings, I get incredible battery life, compared to other eris, rooted and un-rooted. I just want to prolong it even more. and from what i hear, the under volting would help in doing that alot. Plus, no reason heros should have it and not us

I think he was referring to trying a hero kernel on an eris, not undervolting the eris.
The reason we dont have such features is nobody has gone in and done it. The Hero has more market penetration, so there will be more users/developers by nature.
The source for the kernel is out there, we just need someone with the knowledge and the know how to do it and post it.
Im too busy atm to think about it, got to move + work + vacation + alot of other stuff, but its an idea i have pondered, but honestly i have never compiled a kernel, and lack the time for awhile into the future to even research it.
It definitely would be cool though

I take it you have not looked in the Android Development section and seen all the Froyo ROMs for the Eris.
We have froyo roms... we dont' have froyo compatible kernels, our kernels from 2.1 will work but only with tons of workarounds to fix the roms. It's very different...

Try all three. See which one works best with your phone.
Though, High leakage is probably the safest to start, but still could be unadapted to your device.

Awesome thanks. I'll flash now. Besides overclocking to 1.7 ghz (something I will not do) what advantages does this kernel offer over nemisis2all's OTB kernel?
First off lemme say the color change at low backlight setting is BEAUITUFL.

Yes now I see that! The color is great.
My gosh this kernel is absolutely brilliant. My phone is flying and has SO MUCH memory.
I highly recommend running the Kernel Cleaner before flashing.
Downloaded all three and testing each one. I thought my phone was smooth before, this takes it to another level. I like the color screen change in the Voodoo Control App. From what I can tell so far, this kernel is phenomenal.
If the phone froze immediately when I set the max CPU to 1400 on LL, it's probably not right for me, right?

careful with trying too low voltage because we don't have the three button cwm so if you can't even boot, you are screwed and have to flash CM7 again.

Yes guys. Please try High Leakage first. Most of us will have to use that as our primary kernel so don't get too greedy.
Can't download from xda app. The links appear to be inside quoted text and therefore are not followable
Also, how is audio volume with this kernel? I'm curious if it will do anything to help the known audio issues with cm7..

[Q] Which ROM Are You Using?

Hello GUIse & Girls
As you can probably see in the subject bar (or title bar) in this thread, I was wondering what ROM's you guys are using. I think I've probably tested all the ROM's available for the SGSII (Since I'm a themer) and I can't come to the conclusion on which one is the best, they all have their strong points but some are better than others. I will eventually will put a Poll up when I can collate ALL the ROM's that are the main ones (No offence the ones I miss out).
I'll start,
I change ROM's almost daily (As I said, I'm a themer and need to test features) but at present I am using Revolution 2.6 with the Speedmod t27 Kernel, the battery isn't as good as expected, I've disabled fast dormancy and hardly use 3G Data or Wi-Fi and it seems just to drain like none of it's business. I'm even using the Black Android Theme I made for the SGSII as blacks work better and use 30% less power on the Super AMOLED plus.
So, which ROM are you using?

Battery life results

I apologize for I know that similar threads have been created but the last one is fairly old. I have mostly been running AOKP for the last few weeks but I recently tried out serendipity- I'll say that I do prefer an AOSP style rom over a samsung rom. I do like customization but battery life is a priority to me. Can someone please give some input to what rom/kernal/governors are being used to maximize battery life?
There is no simple answer to this question. All Kernels and ROMs are good - please refer to Entropy's battery drain thread for common issues affecting battery drain.
Some kernels however offer UV ability e.g. Siyah which allows u more flexibility.
Having said this I saw about the same battery life on most of the ICS roms I tried.
I am currently evaluating custom GB roms to see if the battery life is better.

we've trained most not to say crap like that. its all dependent on user, apps, and device.
just play with them, find one that works best for you and your setup.

what did you do with your rooted phone?

so i rooted my phone with UCLE5 and put the Siyah v343 kernel. but now what? i spent the last 2 days researching to successfully do this for speed improvements and what not. but i dont really see any differences in speed, or any differences at all. any suggestions on what i can do now because my phone looks the exact same way as it did before the root or what did you guys do after a root to make it seem like i actually rooted the phone.

If you dial *6969# naked girls come to where you are..... You need to flash a CUSTOM ROM you're on a stock ICS ROM you need to read a lot more go to the DEV section those are all custom ROMS.... For an instant change go to the play store and install Apex launcher.

If you're on stock ics (the official release) and someone told u there are speed improvements they lied. Any custom rom easily blows stock out of the water. Stock ( even when rooted) is basically for people who want to play it safe and for things to just work. If u want customization and speed ur best bet is an AOSP based rom. Good luck. Happy flashing.
