[Q] Which stock ROM works on my S3? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
just upgraded from SGS2 -> SGS3 and my new SGS3 is a:
GT-I9300 (model)
4.0.4 (android)
I9300BVLG1 (baseband)
I9300XXBLG8 (build)
I'd like to upgrade to 4.1.1 but use a unbranded Samsung stock ROM and I found loads of different ones at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835931&highlight=official+rom
But which one do I choose?
I took a guess and started to download:
I9300XXDLI8 Download (Thanks To SamMobile.com)
Base Firmware: I9300XXDLI8 (4.1.1)
Region Europe
Country: United Kingdom
Carrier: Unbranded
Build Date: 15 September 2012
Modem: XXDLI8
CSC: OXADLI8
Change List: 178140
Will that one work on my S3? I'm a bit of a noob here on S3 land but I have been flashing and rooting on my S2 all successfully, but all these versions are a bit confusing and I have tried to search for some explanations on these different versions but I haven't really found anything, could someone please help?
Thanks in advance

Any I9300 stock rom would basically work. Just choose one for your region at Sammobile! You have to register, but it has all the stock FW you'll need.
Just make sure you flash the right one in ODIN under PDA with all the checkmarks as it, DO NOT TICK REPARTITION or anything else.
If you want to root afterwards, flash CWM, and then SuperSU/SuperUser, which one is just preference. I personally prefer SuperSU.

Any will do
Just go sammobile website download latest stock rom for your country
Else slowly ota update to jellybean if you haven't root

I'm from Argentina, using Movistar carrier phone. I've decided to use the last stock firm from UK, usually gots the latest firms updates, my recomendation, update to UK (BTU) from sammobile, then, root the phone, then, install triangle away, it will reset the counter for CFW. This time reset the samsung galaxy csc from the google play store, this will wipe your phone and reset to the desire country, select UK. Finally now you can check that your phone looks original, and is updateable with kies

Unsecure kernel for I9300XXDLJ4
Thanks for all the replies!
So I'll get the UK (BTU) I9300XXDLJ4 FW from Sammobile, I've flashed before using ODIN so that wont be a problem, but I'd like to root as well afterwards, anyone knows where I can find a unsecure kernel for I9300XXDLJ4 ?
Thanks again

An old extinct post your choice .
As it says .
This thread is left here only for historical purposes ! Now that the device has been released, easier and better methods have been developed to gain root, like CF-Root.
CF Root is the normal method .

Jepp, you're right, didn't notice that, so I went to your suggested post and also noticed:
'I am no longer supporting this version of CF-Root. I have personally moved away from permanent custom recoveries. I will still be providing roots by way of CF-Auto-Root (click). The downloads in this thread will remain available, I just won't be updating them..'
Hence I continued to the "CF-Auto-Root" link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273
Which did the job just fine! Many thanks for the suggestion.
Just one thing, I thought I'd be getting that 'Yellow Triangle' and I would have to use the "remover" but I'm not seeing didn't, so I haven't used the "remover". So all I've done if flashed the 'I9300XXDLJ4' (BTU) ROM/FW and then the 'CF-Auto-Root-m0-gti9300.zip'
can anyone tell me if my S3 is now recognized as a "normal upgradable" phone by Kies ?
Thanks again

What yellow triangle this is SGS3 not SGS2 .
BASICS .

Ah, ok, so no yellow triangle on SGS3 then, thanks.
I suppose I'll still use the remover/cleaner to '0' the counter and I'll just have to see about Kies/OTA when Samsung releases 4.1.2.
Thanks for all the assistance and help!

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 root question - Need advice

Hello,
I am brand new here and just got my S2, which I would like to root. I have read the post from Chainfire. My question now is:
My base version is I9100BOKD1
Buidl. GINGERBREAD.BOKE4
Kernel 2.6.35.7-9100BOKE4-CL-188639root DELL102#2
Can I use the XWKDD_insecure.tar for rooting or do I need another version. Would an upgrade by Samsung to a newer version still be possible?
Hope some can help me on this, not willing to brick it!
Thanks in advance
you definitely can use this kernel for rooting, just flash back your stock kernel afterwards!

you can always flash new fw versions with ODIN

Update depends upon the product code on the phone .
for updates via Kies or flash generic via Odin .

Thanks for the answer. Where do I get the stock kernel from? Is it possible to backup it from the device.
I read that I would need the adb driver for my phone. I have KIES installed and I am able to get on the phone via MyPhoneExplorer. However, KIES does not work. Where do I get the adb driver from? Uninstall and reinstall KIES? Thanks anyway for the quick response!

So essentially for my version I would need the KE4? right?
I already rooted SonyEricsson Xperia X10 and X10mini, so this should not be a problem. I just want to make sure to have the right stuff in place and not to brick it. Thanks again!
No KE7 should work it has KE4 modem baseband .

So you are saying I already have KE7 although it says KE4 in the build? Why should I use the KE7 then?
I tried to use KIES to look for updates, however S2 is not recognized by KIES.
In terms of the adb driver ( I use WIN XP SP3), do I need to see it. I am able to connect to the internal SD Card. So does it work then?

Thanks. As I am a Newbie I jsut need little advice.
I finally managed to connect with KIES by simply disabling UBS debugging. Now I have what is rquired to know:
PDA: KE4
Phone KD1
CSC KE4 (DTM).
So I suspect I could take the KE4 from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671
As far as I understood from our conversation is that KE7 is the newest kernel and KE4 is included. Would an upgrade to KE7 still allow me to officially upgrade to a possible newer version?

Ke7 is now superseded for some by KE8
Modem in KE7 is KE4 .
Once you move to stock rom you may lose your update path through Kies .
You have posted
PDA: KE4 older firmware than KE7
Phone KD1 Older Modem than KE4
CSC KE4 (DTM).
But the Kies update path will always be open if you update via Kies from original firmware even if its much later for updates than flashing stock rom via Odin .
Path for firmware is Samsung build stock rom its then passed to the network /providers for testing and customisation they then send to Kies . Kies matches original firmware product codes etc finds a matching update and downloads .

Download a stock rom
Flash with odin
Factory reset will wipe data, it wont put the rom back onto a stock rom.

hi mate, ill be brief because its just about my bed time
I9100XXKI4 is gingerbread, I9100XXLPH is ics. So they wont be the same if your upgrading from gb to ics.

I want Stock because of guaranty, so any manual to just take the stock ICS Rom?
and what CF-Root i need to use? i mean version!
you do know when you flash cf-root via odin your going to increase your custom counter and in effect void your warranty, so youll need to either use a usb jig or use chainfires triangle away app?

yes, everytime you use odin to flash a rom on your phone you increase the custom counter by one, if this is not set to 0 ( zero ) your would lose your warranty if you took it to a samsung store for repair. So when you flash ice cream sandwich on your phone, theres an app called triangle away by chainfire ( play store ) which will reset it back to zero and your warranty will be ok! but only use it on ics not gb.
when you tell me your location ill post you a link to ics for you ( stock ) and the cf-root file and the instructions to use it. You have flashed a phone with odin before?

Firstly, try not to hijack threads like this.
Back to your problem, have you tried adding APNs in whatever ROM you are trying?

Right. Can you confirm that you used menu (left touchkey) > save to save your APN?
If that fails, please tell me your carrier and country.

anything solve with this problem;
My guess is you have an firmware for a different country and need to install the CSC for your country.
Either that or flash stock GB rom as you claim all ICS has the problem .

[Q] Possible to force firmware installation?

I downloaded the new firmware via OTA on my rotted phone, and it didn't install. I re-rooted it with CF-Root 6.3, but now If I check for software update it says "no update available." The build though is still the old I9300XXALE8 instead of ALF6, so I guess it isn't updated.
Is the updated firmware file saved somewhere, and if yes can I install it via CWM?
What else can I do?
Thanks
Jay
umm you could try sammobile or this link to go directly to sgs3 european official roms
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9300&r=1#regiona
and flash it using odin/mobile odin. Mobile odin would probably be better as you can keep root when u flash it
We have a stock rom post look there first .

I'm assuming that you are refering to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
However, I have similar questions as the original poster.
I have CF-Root rooted stock firmware (Sweden, unbranded) and would like to update to the latest available (OTA failed). I know that I can download from sammobile.com or samsung-updates.com, but I have no idea which one to use.
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9300&r=1
http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9300
What has to match? CSC, Country/Carrier? Please enlighten me.
Well I'm new to the galaxy series so I couldn't be 100% sure about what you need to match to be sure you get right one. But I do know if you've used cf root you can still connect to kies, you could connect and either check firmware upgrade version then download that vers from one of the sites or update your phone with kies then type *#1234# in the dialler then using that info download that vers of the firmware to have in the future.
If you do go kies option you'll most likely need to cf root once upgraded and I can't be 100% sure it'll work as I updated my phone with kies before rooting but I know cf root doesn't change anything major so kies should still be able to upgrade.

I'm trying to avoid using Kies. Don't want to install it even. Still "download from one of the sites" is not too assuring. How do I know what sites to trust?
Also, my question was rather does me download have to match entirely or is it enough with the same region?
E.g. one of the links above has the Italian LF6 as latest version. Can I use that?

well i use sammobile as its the one quoted in the cf root post under the uninstall instructions, I didnt know about samsung-updates till today. Well u could just install kies to see what firmware code its showing as the upgrade then uninstall. Im just checking sammobile at mo for ya
edit:- when u type *#1234# into your keypad whats the 3 codes it spits out?
I checked the sites out and it seems only the full roms are available. Actually I'd prefer just to flash the firmware so that I don't loose all my apps and settings. Or is there a way around this? I realise it's a lame question, but I'm new...
Here is the result of *#1234#
AP: I9300XXALE8
CP: I9300DXLE8
CSC: I9300LBALE5
Thanks for the help

Yeah there orig samsung roms(firmwares), trick is to get the one for your country/region
Ok , if your sure the updated firmware should be a ALF6 version theres only 2 on sammobile
1. Germany unbranded
2. Italy
Wheres about are u from?
Have you tried the kies update method i mentioned earlier?
Kies is samsungs official software for managing your samsung android device it can sync contacts, backup data etc etc but also to update official firmware.
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/JSP
I have it installed but not using it for backups etc just for when firmware updates are available.
Youve used cf root so the kies method should work ok but youll just need to reroot afterwards.
After several attempts, I managed to use Kies... I had to use a different USB port and it worked.
Thanks a lot!
