Hi there. I searched the web for this and I have nothing... But maybe you will help me
Q: Is there a possibility in Android to view the Cell Info (the name of the cell base, base station etc. - ex. the city name) in Android? Whatever - an option, an app or a widget? Anything
There is a free app called network info on the play store, will give cell id and location
But I need an app or widget, that will show me this info on one of my home screens or in notification drawer Is it possible? Does this app can this? Any other ideas?

a free app called Netmonitor shows the location in your notifcication bar
Doesn't work fine for me... It says only "scaning" and some numbers, but not BTS (name of the antenna - location name). I want just a simple way to have this in visual Any ideas?
Is that using netmonitor ???
As that one shows the address of the cell tower connected to on mine as can see in the attached pic, is that what your after ?
On my device it shows only some number and "scanning" in notification bar. Should I update something via wifi or what? And I don't want the icon in left top corner, the notification in drawer would be enough..
Im not sure to be honest, i had Wifi on when i first started it but as long as you have a data connection i would have thought that would be fine.
Does your location services work or be switched on the phone ?
They're on, but my objective is to have such an app, but dont use data, wifi etc... Is this not possible?

I would guess you need a data connection so it can connect to a database to get the name of the tower

That is normal...even on non smartphones...it is 911 location services and no it doesnt consume more battery with the crosshair indicator there and no actual satelite usuage indicator... it remains dormant until called up.
Ok, thanks. I just thought it was odd that it looked like it was sending out signal with either the Standalone GPS or Verizon Location setting enabled.

i cant speak to whether its drawing power, but if you open maps, nav, or something else that uses gps you will see a different icon come up indicating data transfer to/from sats
Should i leave the vz and google location services also toggled on? Or will this also save battery if i leave it off?

you dont need vz location services unless you use their products i would think. i leave google services on so i can atleast get a general idea where i am on the google maps.
Yeah google location services is all you need. I think weather widget uses it as well so you need something to be on.

Yeah, I know, I'm no newcomer to the Android platform, but I didn't have this icon on my OG Droid, and this was a different icon than the standard location icon, so that's why I asked.
Hi,
I like the default data toggle widget and I use it a lot. But there is a problem - when I enable the network data, there appear a big message - "Allow data traffic? .....".
It annoys me, as I see it at least 5 times per day. Is there any way to disable it ? I am even ready to root the device for that
P.S. Yep, I know that there are other alternatives on the market but this is the last way I would count on.
Thank you in advance.

If I'm correct, the message isn't from the widget, but from the native android. It's there to warn user that enabling will cost you money.
I don't think you can disable that unless (not sure yet) you touch something in the system (of course, rooted for that).
well I wish we could! It's driving me insane, having to click the damn thing everytime. I KNOW it's going to cost me money to use teh data connection, I have an internet plan thank you very much.
That and the "Oh noez you switched data off!" notification on statusbar are annoying the hell out of me.
So, I rooted the device. Can anyone give me a hint how to remove this message ?

I am not sure about this, I am just asking. May be someone knows.
Maybe just assuming that with root access one can alter a variety of things in the OS. But yes that message is hella annoying and really should be shown only the first time.
I don't see other phones do this and my old phone either so there must be a way...

If you are just looking at removing at msg saying the data is disabled, just pull the notification bar and click on the "Clear" button.

Try Widgetsoid. You can create your own widget that one give that dialog. And loads of other handy ones, like batt/cpu info, flashlight, screen-on lock etc.
Well, I realized that is more interesting to write my own data toggle widget. Mobile data and WiFi already works, with no warnings

Most annoying for me is the GPS warning one Never had it before on my Desire.
Even when using a Sony Smarttag to automate the turning on of the GPS you still get the warning dialogue. Annoying as hell.
Those warnings annoy me too! I wish I could get rid of them... And they do pose a problem if I want to automate tasks, what were Sony thinking of???
They should add an option "Don't remember again" when that message appears.
It's ok to advice you the first time you turn on Data, but is necesary to say the same thing five times a day?
If you add to your phone the notification toggles, the message will not appear if you turn on/off data from there. (With 2011 Xperia was so)
I can understand why someone would turn off data, but why turn off GPS? As long as you don't have an app open that actually uses GPS, it doesn't do anything.
I personally NEVER turn off GPS, Data, NFC, ... The only switcher I ever use is WiFi.
If your rooted you can freeze certain apps...I found you can disable the unsupported headphones notification by freezing the following app:
com.sonyericsson.unsupportedheadsetnotifier
Theres probably one on there that causes the notifications for 3G data toggle, but I've not found it so far yet.
And yes, I do agree that the notifications are a tad annoying!
I've added a small application widget to android market. It allows to switch on/off network data without any notifications. Please help me test it

Does it still ask even when youre using the NFC tags?
Cause they just updated the NFC app with adding on Data traffic and stuff. anyone tried? and i just ordered NFC tags on ebay. :S

Just tried it and you do not get a message for turning data on.
Enabling GPS still gives a message. This annoys the hell out of me because their advert for smart tags clearly shows this as a use case.
[shameless plug]
If you find you need more tags, or your want some cheap ones you can stick to things (including ones designed to be stuck to metal), just buy blank ones (about 60p each) and use my new app for turning them into Xperia SmartTags

So, anyone ?
I've added few new features to my app. It's free and add free.
Please leave some feedback.

I have the same problem
Anyone realized how to solve this? I need this message not to show because i'm using cerberus app and if my phone it's stolen and i need to remote control it i don't want the thief to be asked if he agree the message
Hi I'm havin a problem with the location services when using mobile networks. Sometimes, google maps can't give me my location and it will show, location is temporarily unavailable. Any ideas why? Gps works fine but it only works when there's a clear view of the sky. My iPhone can show my location all the time whenever I request it like Facebook check in etc.

Ok now maps is working fine with mobile networks but the only problem left is applications like Facebook/weather using mobile networks to attain the location. Any ideas?
Bump... Anyone facing this issue too?
the location/gps in this phone is pathetic.. i try to "locate" in weather app and it's using data/cellular to show location and it's wrong, it looks like it's using the cell tower as my position.. i don't understand why this phone needs data to locate a position.. isn't that what GPS is for?
even my old windows touch pro 2 found location without using internet data and it was very accurate.
Okay guys, silly old me. Dont disable background data for google services if you want it to work!

Have you downloaded internet settings on your phone? Go to menu, Xperia, internet settings download and try that. If that still doesn't work, come back and let's try fix this!

Hi guys, can i ask something connected to data - on GB Sola when i put all automatic connections to manual data was never working/blinking.
Now in ICS i have google play account and my corporate mail, both put on manual not automatic, and very often data is stil working/blinking.
Why is that?
You mean data sometimes blinks and sometimes doesn't?
If it's what I think you mean, the data sign blinks only when data is being transferred, it remains still when no data is needed. I'm not totally sure but I think that's what you mean?

Yeah, thats what i mean. In GB it wasnt blinking until data is activated by something, here its blinks when it wants.
Second strange thing is - in Accounts i remove Automatic Updates for google account, but sometimes the phone tells me there is an update - why it continue checking for updates? (Never happened in gb)
If data blinks a lot, it must be background apps. News apps/facebook/emails?
When you get notification of an update, is it for apps in the play store or a Sony update centre update? If it's apps in the play store, the only way that I know of getting rid of that is 'disable background data' or as you would expect, 'data enable'.

No news, no facebook account, no email accounts either. In GB when i set my gmail account to "no automatic updates", data never made a blink.
It blinks because of Google Play app updates. The gmail account is set to "no autoupdates", but still inform of updates.
What do you mean by "disable background data", where can i find this?
Yeah I find the Play Store updates annoying sometimes too. A tiny, tiny update in a game I only use sometimes does not need to barage the top of my phone screen.
OK I have just looked into 'disable background data'. I thought it was renamed in ICS, but according to this:
http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...-require-background-sync-on-ice-cream-sandwic
'background data' has been *permenantly turned on* in ICS, whereas in Gingerbread we were able to turn it off with a tick box. The menu in Gingerbread said that that disabled app notifications and saved battery.
I found more people discussing it on this thread, if you would like to read more, I'm sorry to say it's no longer possible in ICS, only Gingerbread and earlier

Ok, i see buddy If you find solution somwhere post it here. Thank you

Just received my S4 and setup my Wi-Fi on it so I don't blow through my Data.
When I am connected to my Wi-Fi it shows both 4G and Wi-Fi on the top of the phone as if it is using both 4G and Wi-Fi.
Can others please check their phones to see if when you are connected if you are seeing Wi-Fi and 4Gor 3G showing at the same time?
Can't exchange the phone yet because the stores don't have them yet
Thanks.
Both WiFi & 4G are shown in the status bar when I am conencted to WiFi. However, if you watch the icons when using an app such as the browser, you'll notice only the orange & green arrows under the WiFi icon show data usage.

Check and see if you have any Verizon Apps running in the background. For example I *think* the My Verizon Mobile App only uses the VzW network when it is on.
Yes mine does this as well. As far as I can tell it's normal behavior. My Galaxy Nexus never did it, but my wife's Droid RAZR does it.

Some people have the same issue as me others don't. Where was your phone manufactured? Mine was made in China.
Mine was made in China.
I also have general wifi issues. The wifi is extremely weak. If I go upstairs away from my router the speed drops way way down. Also while all my other devices can see a bunch of other wifi networks in my area, my S4 can only see mine.
Mine is now showing the 4G icon while connected to wifi as well. It's odd because when I first turned on and activated the phone this didn't happen. Over the course of getting the phone setup this issue popped up.
Mine phone doesn't show 4G while on wifi.
Strange how some people show both while others don't. Do you think it is something we should bring to Verizon's attention or possible return the phone? The point of WiFi is so I keep my data charges down and when I see both Icons on I assume I am using both.
Curious to see where everyone's was manufactured, Mine was made in China and it has the issue.
Make sure to disable Caller Name ID app. In other forum someone mentioned that disabling and enabling this app worked (if you use this application). If this doesn't work, there might be another app that requires Vz network.
