[Q] DATA usage almost double with WP8 - Nokia Lumia 920

I average about 70-80 MB per month when i was on android. This month im at 160 MB and i started 10 days into the month.
I suspect that I am using LTE/4G even when there is wifi and it is not switching over. I am able to tell with android because i have the 3G watchdog app. and it alarms me if i get close to my 200MB limit.
Question
1. is it possible to check which data its using wi-fi or LTE when both is available ?
2. Is it possible to limit the LTE/4G to only emails that are less than XX Kb so that it not downloading when im travelling to and from destinatoin
3. is it possible to control which apps can utilize the LTE/4G

FYI, Android can be configured to keep wi-fi on while phone is in sleep (default) but WP7/8 can't. Windows Phone will always turn off wifi whenever your phone screen is off unless you keep it plugged into the charger. There is a rumor that this behavior will be changed to inline with Android in next update. But for now, you just need keep that in mind. If you are at home of anywhere connected with wifi, keep it plugged in is the only way to force the phone use wifi.
There is also an app on the market that can create a fake background transfer job to force the phone keep wifi on. Not sure if it is compatible with WP8 and I forgot the name of the app.

This got me looking at my phone, I had a big jump in data usage the last 24 hours. I had backup set to auto and I think it backed up when I was out and had no access to wifi. I shut off auto backup until I can check into it more.

Hey Guys, is there a decent app which can track data usage, possibly showing what apps use the data?

Turn off data transfer off.
By data transfer if you mean background data traffic and data roaming or data enable yes those are off when i'm out side by still manage to get this high bills
have you tried checking the summary of your bill? usually maxis will lay it all out which charges have gone through during the entire duration of the billing period, from there you'll know why go are being billed over your average billing during the past months
check your message delivery report settings:
open messages, menu->settings
i know some operators charge if you have this option enabled, meaning u r sending texts which is going from ur allowance but DR is charged even though u might not be receiving !!!
i have check my bill and under usage charge section it's almost RM94.iphysal i have check the delivery report and no i have not enable it.By the way can i ask something,do i get charge if data background traffic is on when i'm using wi-fi.TY
EDIT:
Ok one more thing i forgot to say my facebook inside xperia is always on even though when i'm outside does that somehow affect my bill.TY
you should try and install 3g watch dog and juice defender.
it help me alot to manage data traffic.
Easy: if you don't have a data plan, keep mobile data turned OFF. They charge an arm and a leg per MB, typically. If you need to look up something urgently while on the road, just turn data on for a moment.
On the other hand, if you can't live without, e.g., your hourly fix of facebook updates even when you're otside, then get a data plan. Seriously.
Sent from my SK17i using XDA App
thank you all for advice i will post again by this month end ty again
Also when youre done browsing facebook app..hit sign out coz it will keep updating if you just close it and not sign out.

JuiceDefender Ultimate Questions?

For those familiar with this app. I believe it is definitely helping battery life, but at some costs I'm not sure I like. For example it seems when I'm outdoors it disables data? Even at the balanced setting? Just by looking at the log I believe thats what I'm seeing. If it is disabling data, then that would mean no emails etc correct? Or does it periodic checks on its own and enables when necessary even when screen is off? Hope someone can explain.
With the default settings:
-it will periodically enable data for a short amount of time for all things like emails to get pushed through (under the schedule section)
-it will enable data when the screen is on, only after you unlock it. (that way you can check the time on your phone without having data enabled
With my settings (JD ultimate)
-the data will remain ON when certain apps are running in the background w/ the screen off (Pandora, Google Music, Google Maps)
-data will remain on when it's plugged into the wall (charging via usb is still the same)
-when apps request data (1kb/5s), data will be turned on for 15 seconds (more if needed)
-if connected to WiFi, data will be disabled.
-when on data, WiFi is disabled
-if there is an incoming MMS, data will be enabled
-My Juice Defender has also been trained to use cell towers (NOT GPS) to get my location. If i'm near a place where I have connected to WiFi before, it will turn on WiFi
I get 68% more battery out of my phone w/ this app. Just keep in mind this helps battery during standby (screen off) and not much else.
But when it's configured right, it's an easy battery boost that won't get in your way in terms of use.
So even with default settings, there is a schedule section? I didnt see that option.
I'm assuming you are using customize?
UPDATE: I did not see the controls and schedule tab even after selecting advanced. I had to kill the Juicedefender ultimate app and restart. Now when I check advanced, the tabs appear. Wow there are so many customizations. As said below, I would not mind a step by step set up to get best battery life results on note from you or others. Thanks.

I would be interested in a step by step of your setup. I love JD Ultimate and I get better battery but I know it could be even better. Your setup sounds ideal.
Can you give us a walk through?
Agreed me too . So far on default juicedefender has really extended my battery life.
Juice Defender Setup Guide - Ultimate only
First thing's first. Download the apps. You will need the regular app and then the DJ ultimate license.
Launch Juice Defender Ultimate.
Under the STATUS tab. There is a section that says "Profile". Select "advanced" and then hit confirm. This unlocks a majority of the settings for the app and allows you to set custom triggers, app exceptions, and much more!
As you can see at the top, there should be a few more tabs that popped up.
Go to the "Schedules" tab
This section is what allows data to be periodically turned on so you can receive things like emails and and PUSH notifications. I have me enabled and set to a 30 minute frequency.
Going on down, we see the Night section. Set it to the hours that you normally sleep. This is disabling periodic data. This is good for 2 reasons: If you don't want things like email notifications waking up, and if your phone is not plugged in and you want to slow the battery drain of your phone.
I don't change anything else on this tab. Adaptive start for Night mode I leave on default (+2h max for start, end -1h max). If there is a period of data where you need instant connectivity for things like emails, then you can enable PEAK hours. (disables JD controls for a defined amount of time)
Triggers tab - this is the fun stuff.
Keep "battery" enabled. This ignores scheduled data on periods if your battery reaches a certain point.
Here is how I think about it. If you come home and you usually have about 40% of a charge, then set the threshold to 35%. By having it set to a point right below the average use like that, it's great because it won't get in your way as you work, but will still save battery on nights where you go out rather than going to a place with a charger nearby.
For charger, I set mine to AC because of how much faster it charges and getting emails during the night don't wake me up. (I sleep w/ it plugged in like many people) If things like email / other push notifications bother you at night, leave this off.
Screen. Leave this enabled. Simple as that.
Make sure Traffic is enabled. This allows apps to finish data transfers / downloads before data is cut off. I set mine to low at 15s so it doesn't interrupt downloads.
Apps. This is very important for a lot of people. Everyone has at least one app that they need to have data access going to when the screen is off. For me, it's Pandora, Google Music, and Google Maps. I set those 3 apps to enable / screen off. Meaning that if it's running on the phone, and it's in your pocket, those apps get as much data as they want because JD will be disabled for as long as they're on. Just hit the configure option, and choose which apps you want for enable / screen off.
Last one. Location. Just hit enable. When you connect to Wifi, it will remember your location w/ cell towers and not GPS. If JD detects that you are close to that access point, it will turn on WiFi again for you. It takes a bit of time to "train" Juice Defender to get the right position. But eventually, it works great!
Anything I didn't cover are things I didn't touch. (brightness / bluetooth / CPU controls)
Keep in mind, Juice Defender NEVER blocks your ability to receive / send texts and calls.

Thanks for that , am trying those settings now.
I have always hated that program and found it to screw up phones. Most of the time it actually makes batteries worse. Just my two cents.

I'm not sure what to think of it. I set the settings as per Mushrooms suggestions. In an hour and a half, I've eaten through 14% of my battery with my screen off almost the entire time.
It says it's giving me 1.78x the amount of battery I normally would but normally I wouldn't be down 14% in an hour and a half.

yes, this has always been the general thought and what is posted most often.....I used to think the same thing until I used it on my SkyRocket.....it made a huge difference. I would get home from work before having JD on my phone and be at 20%.....when I installed JD after about a week....I would get home from work and be at 50%
So it may not work for everyone but my .02 cents is, try it and don't just automatically assume because people post that it sucks, that it sucks. Cause for me it is a lifesaver.
This coming from a guy who used to post the same things cmucooper just posted....I hated JD and bad mouthed it every time I could. But I never really used JD, I was always just spouting off what someone else had said about it....now I regret that cause it's worth it.

Dunno why urs is in the negative
I'll give this a shot. My battery has been stellar when screen off. This would be cooler if it makes it even better

Yea I would try the default settings first for a day or two, then you can try the settings posted here to see if it gets better or not. I also didnt like this app with other phones as I didnt see a difference but on the note's battery,I've been unplugged from the wall charger for about an hour on wifi with the screen off and its gone down 1% with me checking emails 2 times. Maybe not too impressive to some but for me this is good, I'll have to see when I'm at work this week.
unplugged now for a little over 7 hours and at 70%

Incorrectly using 3G when on wifi

Has anyone else noticed their Lumia using 3G when it shouldn't be e.g. at home with a working wifi access point?
Mine has done this a few times and because WP7 is so clean and simple it's pretty hard to see what's actually going on - there's no data counter. And to make it worse the data icon shows in the status bar even when wifi is on. Ideally it would show one or the other.
Yes, I notice that too. It could be a bug.

Yup, I think it uses 3G when the phone is locked, as the phone seems to disconnect from Wi-Fi when you lock the phone. Another bug that probably needs addressing.
Yes! This affects me too.
It switches to 3G randomly when I'm on wifi and kills my data without me realising (or shows failed page loads when I have full wifi reception).
It also turns off wifi whenever I lock phone which seems to disrupt/cancel all push messages! Push messaging just isn't working.
So is this problem unique to Lumia 800?
i've noticed this too. it'll also present me with wifi hotspots to connect to, including ones it should be connected to.
as of now, i don't know whether it's an issue with locked or unlocked handsets. my handset was bought unlocked with no branding, but i've noticed some of the bugs i'm having don't seem to happen on network locked/branded handsets.
It's not a Lumia thing, it's just how WP works. Turning off wifi to save on battery use I guess. Android has the same default setting, although it allows you to change it.
I can understand it using 3G for background processes, like you say Android does the same thing.
What I can't understand is it using 3G when I am using the web browser on the phone, and the Wifi icon is lit at the top of the screen.

That's not the case actually, before the firmware update I used to get my notifications, after the update, I don't, I think Nokia did it on the firmware update.
Which firmware was this working in btw?
Oh and turning off WLAN when you have an active connection does NOT save power. It only saves power when there isn't an active connection because the 3G uses more for retrieving background data (eg. regular email, social networking updates) and *much* more for retrieving heavy data. I have tested this on numerous Nokia phones.
^ i got the opposite result - normally i have WLAN turned on at all times, because it always connects to wifi at home and at work. my battery lasted much longer (it lasted the night with 39% left, as opposed to going flat sometime in the night) with just the 3g turned on.
I noticed that wi-fi only stays on after you lock the screen if the phone is charging. Otherwise it cuts the conncetion. Very annoying indeed if you are downloading big games over wi-fi. However I get my notifications and emails just fine in any case. Remeber though, windows phone doesnt support proper push, hence why they cant get skype to recieve calls in the background. Facebook and whatsapp push always comes about 3-4 minutes later than needed.
Another thing that i have been testing for a while on various phones (nokia n9 included, not the lumia because it's too unreliable) and also got mentioned in this tread is wi-fi vs 3g consumption.
So my results are:
with 3 emails 15-30 mins sync or push for one, at least one push service eg, facebook, vkontakte whatsapp etc (where possible)
i concluded that if you just leave the phone there for a day in standby and dont use it, it drains quicker with wi-fi on. Everytime. Every phone.
However when using the internet eg. browsing for half an hour etc. wi-fi uses a lot less battery than 3g.
So only use the wi fi when you need it and switch it off for background tasks. (WP7 does that anyway, for a reason)

Extreme Data Usage on JB Rom

Since I've been using the leaked 4.1 builds I have been burning through Data at an incredible rate, the first month I hit my 2GB monthly allowance after about 3 weeks, which at the time I thought it was just me using it a lot because it was new.
Today however I have been told by my network provider that my 2GB limit for this month was used up in about 4 days!!! After spending most of the day arguing with them they confirmed my phone was connecting every 30-60 seconds & using 200-400mb every time?
After the first month I set all sync options to manual & I don't use Facebook etc. but with Samsung swapping all the settings menu around it seems there are some extra sync options I missed, Maps & latitude, search, location & google all have additional sync settings, so it seems my phone is constantly connecting & logging my location. God knows what else is connecting..
Didn't have this problem with ICS & I don't have a lot of apps installed, probably less than I did then
Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue? if so it's a dream come true for network providers, but they're going to have a lot of pissed off customers!
Did you check your dropbox auto-sync feature? or any cloud storage that MIGHT be uploading your pics? I did notice the data pull but it was while on Wi-Fi, my data counter shows a lot of activity on wifi but not so much for 3G and that is on IDLE.

if your phone was using that much data you would notice the battery on your phone going down pretty fast as well.
Check if you are syncing Google photos. That was at least our problem.
It could be some Apps or something that is constantly downloading or uploading files. Dropbox auto-sync? Or Google plus instant upload?

does leaving the GPS on eat data?

just wondering does leaving the GPS on for location services eat up my data? just wondering as i upgraded to the S4 and had to get the 2GB plan and now i have to start watching my data and use wifi since i lost my unlimited plan.
also does leaving it on eat a lot of battery life?

Yes, GPS will use data unless connected to WiFi. Any widgets, weather apps, or location accessible apps will use their specified update interval to ping your location.
also does leaving it on eat a lot of battery life?

That's dependent on your device and its configuration. For example, if you have a weather app set to update the forecast and temp every 30 minutes, it'll wake your device to gather the necessary info every half hour. That means more awake time, less deep sleep. Conversely, if you set it to update every 2+ hours, it'll be waking your device less often which will allow longer periods of sleeping.
Do you know if its a lot of data? I only use one weather app and that is beautiful wigets then I use facebook but JUST to look at peoples post, I never post and I never like post where im at or use check in

To be clear, GPS does not, in and of itself, use data and turning it off won't save data. Apps such as BW alternatively uses network location to approximate your location. The app uses your location to download information relevant to that locale. The same amount of cellular data is used in both scenarios. In either case, your best practice is to adjust the refresh rates for location aware apps accordingly.
