When do we lose unlimited? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I activated the Note 48 hours ago and the VZW webpage still shows me on unlimited. Do they typically start the new plan at the beginning of the next bill cycle, or did I somehow get lucky? Thanks

maybe when the billing cycle ends

Not me. I'm getting billed for my data usage over 2 gigs. And I'm now at 11.2 gb. That's 9 gigs over at $10 extra/1 gig. Ouch. I upgraded in store so it appears my new plan went into effect immediately.

Bump. Anyone else? I'm still on unlimited, but my new bill cycle starts tomorrow.

Its weird, I'm already on my next billing cycle and it still shows unlimited data still. I did the pre-order through the VZW website. I'm keeping my mouth shut until they realize it lol

You might actually get to keep it. I upgraded to a SGS3 shortly after it came out, but way after the cutoff to keep unlimited officially. I never lost it then.
I ordered the SGS3 through Verizon's website. I also ordered the GNote 2 on their website. I wonder if there's something special about the way my line is configured or the way I'm activating my phone that's causing this.
When I received the GNote I didn't go through any activation process and I didn't use the SIM they sent me. I just yanked the SIM from my SGS3 and popped it in the Note. I will be very happy if I wake up tomorrow and still have unlimited.
FWIW I first added this line about 2 years ago when VZW first got the iPhone and was offering unlimited data with it. Can they not take away unlimited while I'm still in contract?

Yea could be because we didn't switch sim cards. I did the same thing and just took my sim out of my razr and stuck it in the note 2. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

IIRC that's what I did with the SGS3 too.

Just started a new cycle, still unlimited and also ordered through vz website. Who knows?

May I ask how you activated your phone? Did you just pop in an already activated sim card to the Note?

I upgraded at a Evo2 Store (Another branch of Verizon, but still a Verizon store) and I upgraded yesterday and I still have my unlimited data.

That's supposed to be impossible. Now I cannot speak for the automated system, but Verizon's eROES system we use will force you to drop unlimited data and add on a the 2GB package. The only way around this is to use another line's upgrade and then do a device swap.

That'ls pretty sick if you got away with it, I must admit. There must be some inconsistencies with their online activation systems, but I can tell you that anyone using eROES to process an upgrade on a line with an unlimited package will be forced to downgrade. I do this every day.

It's effective on the date the upgrade is processed, also the new start date of your contract. However, it is not back-dated, which means you won't receive any overages if you had used more than 2GB already. Your data usage will reset as per usual on your billing cycle date.

It's after midnight here but it still hasn't clicked over to the next bill cycle. Would really like to see it stay unlimited so I can go back to abusing the 40 meg LTE I get here in Saint Louis lol

You said you purchased your phone a few days ago, correct? Did the Verizon site say anything about you losing unlimited data when you ordered your phone? Are there any additional lines on your account and are they still under contract? If they do downgrade you and they didn't inform you of the change I would call and raise hell. Threaten to return your device, reverse your upgrade, and terminate your service.
Watch them add a exception note to your account.

It definitely warned me I would lose unlimited when I placed the order on the 19th of last month. I had come to terms with being on WiFi all the time. It's available both at home and work, so it would have been manageable.
But, heck, if the don't take it away again I will not complain. Just wish I knew what I did that was special.

You can get Double Data without a new device

I was just able to upgrade to the $30 4gb plan from the $30 2gb plan on Verizon's web page. I didn't buy a new device or sign up for a new plan. I've been a Verizon user for about 6 months so I don't know why I would qualify for the change unless they made it open for everyone.
Regardless, check it out!
Sorry if this has already been mentioned elsewhere.
I originally signed up for 2GB data before the first double data promo back in November. I asked the store rep and they said I wouldn't be eligible but I just called the CSR and they doubled the data without question.
(Of course I got into the unlimited data loophole shortly after).

haha same here. unlimited through the Hotspot loophole
i imagine that anyone on the 4g network can get this sort of thing. i've heard reports of people being given free upgrades to 4g due to high data usage, so it makes sense that their less likely to be stingy with such things on the 4g phones. might be harder on 3g phones, though probably not impossible. i've still got my grandfathered in unlimited, though i've only been above 2gb once.
Unlimited loop hole doesn't work anymore
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5
I signed up for 4GB when I renewed through Amazon Wireless to get the $150 promo last year. My account never reflected the updated plan. Not data, minutes, text, or price change. You'd think they didn't renew the contract at all except it shows my next upgrade over a year from now.
Not that I'm complaining.

Yea, that, or you can just login to your Verizon account on their website and remove the 2GB data plan and add in the 4GB plan. Matter of fact, while they are running the double data promotions, on the website all they offer are the doubled plans.
I bought my Rez right after the Dec-Jan promotion ended. Missed it by a week and was pissed. Then in March they started a new promotion, I quickly logged in and changed my plan. Took all of 30 seconds.
You can also use the My Verizon app on the phone to do it as well.

[Q] Upgrade and keep unlimited?

Okay I have a few ideas about getting a discounted phone and keeping unlimited data. First off my line is available for an upgrade this November, and another member of my family has an upgrade now, they do not have a smartphone now but will be getting a smartphone with 2gb data. So my first idea is once they get there upgrade, wait until mine is available and then transfer it to their line and have them upgrade again, and then I take that phone and put my sim card into it. Now I'm not sure, but I think the problem with that is when transferring my upgrade and having someone use it, will extend my contract and bump me to tired data, which I can't have happen. So if any of you have tried this method and had success I would really appreciate if you could tell me exactly how you did it.
The other method I read about was having a rep transfer the unlimited data plan to a tired data plan within the family and transferring the tired to the used to be unlimited, and then upgrading with tired data, and then switching the respective data plans back and maintaining unlimited data.
Again if anyone has had any luck with any of these ideas, or were able to keep your unlimited and get a subsidized phone another way, I would really appreciate it if you could leave a detailed response.
Thanks!!
You can use the other person's upgrade no problem, but if anyone uses yours, you will need a new contract and lose unlimited. I don't know about the more complex tiered data switching scheme... sounds like something that might work if the reps were feeling very charitable.

Friend, just go to Gazelle and get a nice used phone for a couple hundred bucks and call it a day.
nevermind
You can use another family members upgrade by swapping phones after they upgrade, but you can't give your upgrade to someone else without losing unlimited. So either you convince your family member to give them your upgrade and you give them your old phone, you don't have many other options.
Thanks everyone. It sucks Verizon is doing this to its grandfathered users, but I guess I will just have to keep using the Thunderbolt until I have enough to buy a phone of contract.

The funny thing is, I typically use around 3GB per month, even when I tether. I just hate the idea of always checking how much data I used to ensure that I don't go over!

I'm kind of in the same boat. I am pretty much always on wifi now because I work from home, but I don't want to lose unlimited data in case I ever feel like using more data again. Been considering making a switch over to T-Mobile next time I feel like upgrading.

I would love to switch to T-Mobile, but I'm about 15 minutes from the city so I only get 2G here, and I could never live with that. If you do go T-Mobile, I'd check out either the $30/mo. for 100 minutes with unlimited text and data, or the $50 unlimited everything.

I'm contemplating checking their service out. $50 unlimited everything works well for me since I do make fair use of minutes at times (mostly work-related). If their service in my area is good, I could see getting the Note 2 from them rather than buy it unsubsidized from Verizon.
Regarding the earlier comment about giving your upgrade to someone else, have you verified this? I had read through the grapevine an ok workaround was to transfer your upgrade to another line, use it, then activate it on your line again to bypass all the stuff. Just don't want to try the wrong thing when the time comes and get spanked for it hah.

If memory serves me correct it will lock you in for a 2 year contract so you would end up paying for 2 separate lines that way but I am not totally sure there.
Oh, we have the lines. And dumbphones on them that are used (grandparents on jitterbug like phones...heh) I know I can get away with upgrading one of those lines, then activating it on mine. I was just hoping someone had tried transferring the upgrade from smartphone to another line, upgrading, then activating back on real line. In essence, still using your own upgrading and just subverting contractual stuff by doing all the action on another line.

Think that has to do with the Samsung radio gripe which is really hit and miss but can be a problem. My mom has a g nex that gets a little flaky at times at home because of it. Before I put the update on it basically it was a coaster in my hosue

I'll need to take a look at that and Note 2 discussion on T-Mobile. My area is possibly iffy for T-Mobile, which is why I'm concerned. AT&T was historically a problem. Verizon has had the best coverage at home so I'm reluctant to move away from them.

Since it was a family plan, why didn't you open a new line and do the upgrade that way? IMO, losing unlimited data is not worth it...$30/month = unlimitd or $30 / month = 2gb. I'd pretty much have to buy into their 10gb plan, which is way too much for our family/just me. If you use netflix, dropbox, etc... it just isn't worth it. You'll eat that data in no time.

Open new line and use it to get discounted Note 2. Activate Note 2 on that line. Then deactivate Note 2 and swap it to your existing line that has unlimited data. Then drop the new line down to a standard "dumbphone" package and keep a feature phone activated on it as a spare/emergency device. Basically you will be on the hook for keeping the new line active for 2 years at the cost of $10.00 per month + taxes and fees.
It is a roundabout way and in the long run you end up paying quite a bit. But for some people it is worth it to keep the unlimited data.

Your best bet is to go into a store. I have done this twice now to get new phones. I have 3 active lines, 2 of which have unlimited data. The 4th line is my ghost line. In December I'll be upgrading one if the unlimited data lines to get the note 2. That line never uses more than 500mb of data anyways. After that I will have revolving upgrades every 6 months.... I'll just keep putting the new device on my primary line

What I am going to do is use my upgrade (even though it will nuke my unlimited data) and then swap lines with my wife. She rarely uses more than 1 GB. So I can put her on the 2GB plan and then swap my phone over to her line which still has unlimited. I would like to swap the numbers as well but from everything I have read, VZW won't do it. Number change? yes. Swap? no.

You have to have a reason for an early upgrade especially one half a year away. I had returned 2 Galaxy Nexus for problems I was having in the past, and although I wasn't having problems with my current Galaxy Nexus, I used my satisfaction with that phone as leverage.
Have been a customer for 6 years and my bill is currently over 300.00 a month.
Maybe those facts help me? I don't know.

This gives me hope that I can call up Verizon sometime in December and get my upgrade moved up from the end of January
Edit: Gave Verizon a call. They were really nice, but I was told that just like the iPhone 5, I couldn't be upgraded early at the reduced amount for the Note 2. The lady I was talking to was really sweet though, and she said she was going to see if she could find out why the Note 2 has the same restrictions the iPhone 5 does.
Advice please?

My update isn't due until May of next year as well. I originally had the Bionic, and then I needed an insurance replacement and they gave me a bad Razr, so then I was sent another Razr. This "new" phone constantly shuts off and freezes and has issues. I truly want the Note 2. How long did it take you to get them to agree to moving your upgrade? Could you give me some specifics? Was it over the phone or in the store? Your help is greatly appreciated! I too would be losing my unlimited, but at this point I don't care.
P.s. Congrats on getting the Note 2!

It was my first call and about 1 hour of total time before I got my upgrade. I called up and voiced my concerns with data connectivity and stated I wanted an early upgrade and went into the fact that I'm a long time customer with six years of on time payments and a fairly hefty monthly bill. She said she had to talk to someone else and came back and rejected my early upgrade. I asked if I could speak to someone else who could address my concerns without having to ask someone else. After a few minutes on hold, I was directed to someone who had a better grasp at customer service, not that the first lady was bad, but this guy was better. He basically heard me out and went ahead and granted my request. He went into some finer detail about not being able to early upgrade to any apple products, but that was the only restriction to his early upgrade powers.
My whole reason for calling was to get a Note 2, I just used the Galaxy Nexus as my entry point into the house of early upgrades.
might do this with my kids lines that come up in feb. they can live on 2gb a month, won't kill them.

DNA upgrade.. unlimited data

so this doesn't pertain just to the DNA but I upgraded to the DNA Friday morning via Best Buy.com website and i received the phone today and both my lines still have unlimited data...
when i was upgrading it initially gave me a pop up saying i would have to choose a new data plan but during the upgrade process it never asked me to pick a new data plan and on my purchase info it stated keep same plan.. the contract has been added to my account as my upgrade date on My verizon has changed.. but the line I upgraded on still shows unlimited data!!
I can't promise this will work again but it's worth a shot if you really want to keep unlimited data!!
I'll be very interested to hear if Verizon catches this and changes your plan in the next couple months, keep us updated!

If you transfer an upgrade, even from another unlimited data smartphone line, to your own, to get the DNA, the replacement of the unlimited data plan does not retroactively apply - that's how I ended up having unlimited data after transferring an upgrade from a (willing) sibling's line, both of us having unlimited data before my purchase of the DNA.

If you transfer an upgrade, even from another unlimited data smartphone line, to your own, to get the DNA, the replacement of the unlimited data plan does not retroactively apply - that's how I ended up having unlimited data after transferring an upgrade from a (willing) sibling's line, both of us having unlimited data before my purchase of the DNA.

well i didn't transfer the upgrade i upgraded my wife's line to the DNA (she currently has an iPhone 5, but was out of contract) they sent the phone with a new sim card... when i got the phone i took the pre-installed sim out of the DNA put mine in..
I know you can transfer upgrades but that isn't how i did this one.
so before the upgrade we both had the 29.99 unlimited data.. on verizon's site it was making me change her data to the $30 2gb plan but on bestbuy's site it never asked/made me change her plan in fact it even says keep existing data plan on my invoice.
I had unlimited data but used the upgrade from my line which should have lost it for me but my VZW account still shows unlimited as well. I assume the 2gb plan will kick in at the start of my next billing cycle. Interestingly, I also switched the pre-installed sim with the one from my GNex. Maybe I'll get lucky and somehow keep unlimited... but I doubt it.

who did you upgrade with? straight through verizon or some 3rd party?
I did the upgrade on the 23rd so that was 2 days into my billing cycle so i guess in theory they could change the plan on the 22nd of December when my new billing period starts.. but if they do I will call CS and argue.. since my info i recieved from BBY when i upgraded showed keep same data plan..
I upgraded through VZW. I preordered through the website on the 18th. My billing cycle resets on the 14th so I'll know for sure in a couple weeks.

Good luck. I had a similar setup going with AT&T and they finally hit me with "That plan isn't compatible with your phone." and switched me to a tiered plan. That was when I decided to switch to VZW. I will likely buy my future devices from e-bay or another source to ensure I have unlimited data as long as possible.
Thats cool. Ill keep my fingers crossed. Only loophole(besides alternate upgrade) to keep unlimited data.
I used my bro's upgrade to get the DNA on verizon and I lost unlimited data. Stuck with 2 GB for the same price. Hope they bring back that promotion of double data. And my mother has 4GB and she uses like .1 lol.
So lazarus2297, are you still on the unlimited plans? I just went through the entire process also showing " keep existing plan". Didn't go through with it yet. Want to make sure before I order.

not yet.. my new billing period starts on the 22nd
Well, I'm now officially 2 days into my new billing cycle and my account is still showing unlimited data despite having used my upgrade to purchase this phone through Verizon.
I'm not really sure why I didn't get stuck with a 2gb plan but I'm not certainly not complaining.

I'm just worried that Verizon will all of a sudden just change it over to the 2gb plan down the road.
It took AT&T 3 months to switch my data plan to a tiered plan. I left shortly there after because I hadn't done an upgrade but they wouldn't let me go back to my original data plan.

I assume this will happen at some point. However, both of my parents upgraded this last month as well, and both of their plans changed from unlimited to 2gb right away. This gives me some hope that it's some weird fluke/loophole on Verizon's part and I might get to keep unlimited.

I posted the same experience some time ago, transferred an upgrade with unlimited data to my line, with unlimited data, and both lines stayed unlimited after the upgrade.
I had called Verizon since I was confused about the LTE sim card, and the handler openly told me that because I had transferred the upgrade the data plan wouldn't change for either one.

Want to upgrade to the note 2 and keep unlimited data (Without adding a line)

Alright three days ago I upgraded to the galaxy note 2 from the 3g samsung fasinate and I found a little loophole while activating the phone that let me keep my unlimited data.
Alright so first off my upgrade was filed through bestbuy.com I recieved my phone very fast (2days). When I recieved my phone you get everything you need to activate it your self including the 4g sim card so no need to go to a vzw store. So everthing is pretty straight forward like activating any phone on the website. Start off at your account page follow the steps for activation. Until you get to the select a new plan page in which it will say "your new device is not compatable with your current data plan" now from this you will see the current selected data plan is your unlimited. At this step without selecting any of the other data plan options (2gb 4gb and so on) just hit the select/continue option and finsh the rest of the on screen instructions. At the end of the activation you will see "congratulations your new device is activated" and a basic summary of the changes to your plan. For me the removal of 3g and the addtion of 4g.
Well I hope some of you can benefit from this....
I have a feeling you may find out in a month or so that you don't have unlimited data anymore.
I bought my note 2 in a VZW store outright. If you use a lot of data the phone will pay for its self.
Another loophole is to transfer your upgrade to a dumphone (assuming you have a dumbphone on your account), upgrade that line to a GN2, keeping unlimited on your other lines and adding a tiered plan to this line, activate, deactivate and put the flip phone back on which will cancel the tiered data plan again leaving your other lines untouched, move the GN2 to the line of your choice. You may potentially receive a months data on your next bill. Call 611 and explain the situation and you'll be credited back for the month (minus a day) on your next bill.
I've done it twice now. Enjoy!

Mind if I ask a question -- after you've done that, on which line does the new two-year commitment go? The dumb line or the line with the transferred note 2? Also, how much do you pay per month for the dumb line? Thanks...

I'm guessing to the line where the upgrade originated (smart phone). It now has the longest upgrade availability date under My Verizon.
I have 700 minutes w/ unlimited texts. Each smart phone (except the first one) has unlimited data ($30) and $10 add on. Dumb phone is just a $10 add on.

This was the trick I used to use, but according to my coworkers this stopped working. Now it supposedly gets switched automatically to a 2gb plan. I was told this last week.
Sooner or later Verizon will catch on and fix these loopholes.

Still worked for me a week ago.
I did it over the phone when the i5's first released and a few weeks ago for the GN2. Ask a rep, worst they can say is no. But ask 2 or 3 more before giving up until you find one that understands what you're trying to do and has done it before.

I just received my Note2 yesterday and had ordered it by calling and was told specifically I would not lose my unlimited data as I have a dummy line I used for upgrading . I have yet to activate it as I have a GNex on my unlimited line now. But I will activate tomorrow when I can actually call and speak to someone and switdh the upgrade to my unlimited data line and keep the non smart phone thats on the dummy line as it is and not have to have a tiered plan for the extra line, Basically its my sons line who doesnt need a smart phone and I used his upgrade, done it before on two other lines for my daughters lines in the past without losing my unlimited. If I get a different response tomorrow when I call to do the switch and activation I have two options I can do- 1- return the note to them and stay with my GNEX unlimited plan. Option 2 would be to tell Verizon to go &%^themselves and not return their note2 and good luck getting any early term fees and go somewhere else . All depends on them!! I hear TMob will be offering a $250 mail in rebate on the Note2 next month bringing the cost to only $49 plus fees with contract-? and unlimited as well.

For sure I will. I have done this before recently and didn't have a problem. I have 5 lines in all for my family and used one for wife's new phone, But if Verizon wants to keep screwing their long time customers (15+ years) with the bogus share everything crap, I will not have any issues screwing back! For sure ill post back tomorrow after.

I used a dummy phone to keep my unlimited on Jan 2nd with no problems. I have a friend who works for Verizon and he makes sure everything goes smoothly.
