I will be moving to the new Archos line as soon as it is released so I need your guys help on which one to move to. The reason I ask is because I know that the 80 XS will have a rockchip processor while the 101XS will have a TI OMAP 4470. Which will be better in terms of development as well. I would really your opinions. Thanks
They both are very low end. Not very good for development considering not a lot of development for it. You should consider the nexus 7 or nexus 10 instead.

Yea I know Nexus is better 100% of the time for development. No argument there. But I don't really like the fact that non of those had sd card slots. I really like Archos new design. Idk, I like having something different and Archos is just that. When I say development I mean that which will get more. I know that compared to other devices there is extremely little going on here. I guess it might all come down to which one Surdu supports lol. Anyone has any suggestions?

I have the 80g9. The form factor is the same as the 8xs. I love the size of it. Typing on screen is easy and its just the right size for most every task. I find the larger tablets cumbersome to hold for longer periods.
I'm anxiously waiting for the 8xs here in n/a.
Sent from my ARCHOS 80G9 using xda app-developers app
Yea. The 80g9 was the perfect midpoint. I still want to know which would perform better though. TI OMAP4470 or rk3066
What are you doing with your tablet? From the videos I have seen, the new archos performs smooth and fast. The 8" I have not seen in action yet. But having my 80g9 for awhile now and running serdu's clean and fast rom, the only issue now is the amount of ram in my tablet. 512mb fills up quickly and a reboot is needed every so often to keep the tablet fast. You know when you have your ram filled as the tablet is slow to react.
A non issue with the tablets with 1 gb of ram.
Sent from my ARCHOS 80G9 using xda app-developers app
oh okay good. I also have 512mb Ram and it's killing me lol. My only other issue now is the keyboard size in the cover board. An 8 inch keyboard might be too small. Did you check that out by chance? Surdu's Clean and Fast is the best, It's what I'm running now.

I consider both portable. I'm used to lugging around a 17" Acer notebook. I find the 8" form factor much nicer to use from an ergo standpoint. Easy to type in portrait and still a big enough screen to do other things.

I bought the 80 g9 because of the form factor as well. I'm not too sure about the 8 inch this time around though. That is because of the bezel size, it is way too big.

Its still small enough to reach the entire screen with your two thumbs. That's all that matters.
As you can see its more portable than the 10xs too

Archos 80XS use Rockchip 3066 from China! => 101XS better ( use TI OMAP 4470 )
I don't see the difference if it originates from China. Other than cheaper production costs. Not sure if TI makes there chips from USA though. I just honestly don't see your point on how that makes the 101XS better because of that. If you care to explain how that would be great. Thanks for the response though, I appreciate it.

I suspect that he was referring to the fact that there is a stereotype (not entirely undeserved it must be said) that RockChip processors are of a lower quality and performace level than their TI, Qualcomm, etc. alternatives.
As of now there is less of a quality and performace gap (so far as I am aware) between RockChip CPUs and the CPUs of other manufacturers. I doubt very much if you would notice any performance issues if you went the 80xs over the 101xs, but (as you can tell if you've looked at the dev section for these devices) there is slightly more developer activity for the 101xs, so that may say something about the processor.
Could I enquire which of the two devices you chose in the end? (Assuming you chose either of them, of course.)

Hey guys,
i'm wondering if anyone has had a look at upgrading the RAM at all, I know that it takes a DDR2 1GB stick atm, would it be possible to upgrade this?

No as its not removable, I believe. Its soldered to the board. Too much involvement. You could always open up your prime and try and let us know how it goes..lmao be warned tthough it will void your warranty.

You need to understand that when it comes to phones and tablets although the RAM chips themselves are the same as those found on RAM sticks for computers, you cannot change them as they are soldered directly onto the main board.
Even if you managed to unsolder and replace with a larger chip, and successfully boot the device, it would not use the extra space as it would not know that it had it.
The amount of memory is, as far as I know, hard coded into the device itself. I could of course be talking complete nonsense.

Even if that's not quite how it's considered to be done, I'd imagine you're right: a larger amount likely wouldn't just show up in your system. I would think that some system files and maybe the build.prop play a large part, but I don't know.
However, when I started reading this, I was thinking more of an upgrade from DDR2 to DDR3. That would be awesome, but just as unlikely? I guess the Prime's MB probably is rated only up to DDR2?
I here there is no difference between DDR2 and DDR3 when tested between TF300/TF200 anyway.

Aye.
But what if you used a faster and generally more expensive DDR3 than ASUS is? I think it could be pushed. But it would still be pretty pointless, considering that most of what's holding these devices back isn't much to do with inferior hardware so much as software

Agreed, the stock kernel is alright, but there is SO much more room for improvement. I can't wait for the updated SnB kernel to come out though. I tested the 1.0 and my device literally booted in 7 seconds. Also unlock and ROM helps tons. I easily get over 2 days of usage on my tablet with AOKP and stock kernel with medium usage as compared to maybe a day, medium usage on pure stock.
I don't know if trolling, stupid, or really adventurous. Anyways, if the last one is true, I hope the best for you!

Here's my answer to the same question, on another thread : Personally, I wouldn't, but that's me.
If that's what you want, go for it.
I like the ability to change from webos to android, but then I really like webOS."
Since you don't like webOS, and aren't satisfied with the android experience on the TP, then I would say 'go for it'.
My android runs well, and I find webos an excellent os, it just lacks the apps android has.
What are the benefits of moving from a CM9 device with a working flash browser and large internal storage to a 8 or 16 gig Nexus 7.
For me there is no killer app or feature that justifies the need to move. Having tried JB I'm really not that fussed.
Yes, development has slowed but CM9 is more than adequate on the Touchpad. I would wait for the next Android OS upgrade and the next nice bit of kit to be released.

The quad core processor on the n7 goes a long way, as does the "built for android" aspect. Them there's jelly bean, and the higher resolution display.. The list goes on and on. I'm considering doing the same thing. My One X has a tegra 3 chip like the nexus 7 and provides a much better android experience.

personally i cant stand a smaller screen. the one on the touchpad is as small as i could tolerate. if you do a lot of traveling the 32gb could come in useful if you want to store larger files/more files etc.

To be honest storage is THE ONLY reason that has kept me from doing that yet. If google had a 299 for 32gb id be gone already. DOnt know why they dont even have that already
You guys crack me up, talking like storage space and screen size are the only factors in choosing a tablet. Our touchpad only gets used for web/forum browsing, etc. when our livingroom laptop is in use, so I couldn't care less how much it has. We've got phones, computers, media center, etc. for media...don't you? What the heck are you storing on that thing that needs so much space?

+1 and its a handy bedside TV , news reader and all round entertainment center. Its also great to take on holiday as it not as bulky as even my smallest laptop.
I use plex to stream my movies to my touch pad so I hardly use any space whatsoever on my touch pad. Though for whatever reason the speaker in my touch pad recently just crapped out on it. It crackles really bad.

It comes down to personal preference!
I came from a og galaxy tab. I was really glad about the larger screen. I also have the 32 GB version.
Sure its only got cm9, I would like a more functional jelly bean ROM, but as it stands there isn't anything wrong with it.
Tbh, I think the touchpad holds up well even against the honeycomb tablets. And from that respect, the nexus 7 is only a "one gen" ahead of the touchpad.
I won't give up mine, mostly cause I love the touchstone charger, and its not like the touchpad was a bad deal to start with. I would however change to a nexus 10 if that ever gets made.

Depends on what you are doing with the touchpad.
If you need a tablet with a long battery life -> change to the Nexus 7
If you need a small, light weight tablet -> change
If you want play the newest games with bombastic graphic -> change
If you want to be up-to-date with your Android Version, even if you dont know what the difference to the previous version is -> change
If you want to make Skype Calls with a working camera -> change
Maybe 1-2 more Points.
If you are using your TouchPad just at home to surf the web, read mails and check the weather, like I do, than stay with the TouchPad. Even if the development died finally, CM9 like we have it now, and the hardware of the Touchpad, will be more than enough for the next 1-3 years.
The only thing that could force me to change would be a Nexus 7 7" or 10" with 3G for less than 300€.
i don't think there is still a lot of people want a used touchpad, considering that a new 32 gb playbook is 100 dollars now
You might hold off shortly to see what happens with Openmobile. If it comes out this month as expected the best of both worlds will come together.

Just got the nexus 7 this weekend and loving it. It is definitely feeling small right now, but I'm getting used to it. The speed is awesome, even blows my gnex out of the water. :fingers-crossed:Well this question may get a whole lot of different answers depending who you ask, Also there is not enough details from the word "tablet" and price "150" & "200". I give it a shot since I have kids of my own. The price between 150 & 200 if its nook tablet 8 gig or 16gig, I would take the 16gig for a 150 or the question that could arise is why not buy a new Google nexus 7 8 gig (has gps) for that price 200 not including tax. Going back to the kids, the nook tablet is fairly durable due to the nature of drops that been performed by me and the kids. I have seen full front glass tablet dropped and it's not going to take the abuse like the nook tablet since it's not made with the full front glass. Give it time and it depending on the quantity that is being used, it's no doubt that it will be a root procedure for it.
The nook tablet is fine, especially for smaller kids. Very durable, I've dropped mine a few times.
If you're not tied into the Amazon ecosystem I'd go for the Nook.
Personally I prefer the nook over the kindle.

Build quality I give to the nexus, the archos however, can take a major lickin. And will still work.
Display I don't know. I find my g9 display fine.
Performance, I will give to the nexus as its a newer technology. The archos is fine for most tablet"y things. I use mine for navigation in my jeep, doc editing, playing some games, doing the usual forum reading etc.
Utility, archos hands down. With a micro SD slot, micro USB and full size usb, as well as an available 250gb hard drive, the nexus does not come close to the archos in this area.
Firmware, if you do not need the latest right away, then archos is fine. Serdu purdu has amazing sets of roms for our devices. I'm running his clean and fast from now and its great.
Btw, archos has the 10xs out now with a lot of new features plus a keyboard cover. Very cool device for the same if not less than the n10. Do a specs comparison of those two.

I recently got a Nexus 7 and it crushes my G9 80 Turbo with build quality, display, performance, and most importantly firmware stability. And it cost less then the G9.
I do not know why anyone would even consider an Archos tablet these days with all their problems; given that there are so many better performing, higher build quality, lower cost alternatives available.

Just judging by those specs, it could be a decent tablet, but I very much doubt it. Any tablet that is 8 inches that is a nice tablet will probably have a higher resolution than that and would likely have more ram. If I had to make a guess, I would guess it is probably a cheap Chinese tablet that is either running a very old version of Android or some other OS completely and probably won't do much more than browse simple web pages or run simple apps. Unfortunately the market is full of these kinds of tablets now, which is okay if that is what you are looking for, as long as you can get them cheap and you realize what you are getting. I could be wrong though, it might be decent. There is no way to know without more information.
