to RUU or not RUU is the question. - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Here's the situation, my phone is running great on SuperLTE or any other Sense rom. Excellent battery, no signal problems, no freezing, just a reliable piece of technology. The problem comes in when I try to run anything other than a stock style rom.
When I flash cm10, everything works good, except for sporadic mms sending and receiving. If I flash any of the miui builds I have a messaging LOS after a reboot that my phone can not recover from and a full wipe is required.
I have tried reflashing radios, prl and profile updates. Tried doing hands free activations. About the only thing I have not tried is running the RUU. Would this make any difference? I'm s-off with hboot 1.12, 1.12.11.0809 radio. With the JB update dropping any day should I just wait for the new firmware and try that first.
Any tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

I would read through the OP for CM10 and see if anybody else has had the same issues. If Sense-based ROM's work fine for you, I'd be inclined to say it's CM10, not your phone. Also, if and when JB drops, I'd wait for a rooted version from one of the devs, as opposed to losing root and potentially other issues.

Updating to hboot 1.19 could be worth a try. Its not like u have something to lose now that dirtyracoon is around..its very easy to run

This just drives me crazy. I know that every one of our phones are different, but many people don't have these problems. Makes a guy wonder what is different or messed up with mine.

[important note] ICS LEAK FIRMWARE ZIP and DOWNGRADING

This is kind of related to development, and still really important since those flashing Leak ROMs might not read the General section and not know if I posted this there. That is why I posted this here.
If you flashed any PG86IMG firmware zip for the Virgin Mobile leaks, you might not be able to go back.
EDIT: CHADS DOWNGRADE THREAD: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641461
NOTE: This is not specific to freeza's zip. Any firmware zip for the leaks is the same.
Why?
The leak firmware has a file, dzdata_4g.hdr, which no other official firmware has.
The only similar thing other leaks have is dzdata.img which has confirmed not working since people flashing 2.17 ruu (which has this) are still showing the Virgin Mobile banner and having problems.
Downgrading will leave you with the Virgin Mobile dzdata_4g.hdr.
TL;DR/easier to digest
Leak has dzdata_4g.hdr
No official firmware RUU does
Downgrading leaves you stuck with dzdata_4g
What is bad about keeping the Firmware
If you have flashed the zip or have tried downgrading from it, you might be one of the few that have problems with:
-No 3G, just 1X
-No VPN
-More bugs
And everyone will be stuck with the "Virgin Mobile" banner.
Also you're flashing radios and firmware from an unnoficial firmware for a different device. This can cause a lot of issues.
If you aren't having problems and you flashed it, good for you.. Some do but most don't..
EDIT: We're marked as Virgin Mobile so we'll be at the bottom of the tower priority.. among other things..
Can I still flash the firmware zip minus dzdata_4g.hdr?
Try it and report back. It might brick or phone or cause random reboots with the ROM.
Is there a fix if I already flashed it?
See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641461
Summary:
The point of this warning is that if you flash the leaked firmware, there is a chance of you having problems. This chance is pretty high since I'd say like 1/10 of people have no 3G and signal quality for a lot of people got poorer.
If you get these problems, there's no going back. There's no way of fixing them.
Whether it's worth taking the risk or not is up to you.
Edit: This kind of explains the situation were in right now:
HTCFlyerX said:
BTW....if anyone can confirm that they can roam on data after flashing the VM firmware please let us know! I believe data roaming may not work any longer.
And to explain why I don't believe the Sprint ICS leak....very simply....all the rcdata.imgs from our ruus contain the same exact thing....the partition (RCData) is the Radio-Cust.(om?)er?) Data partition and holds pri information and roaming data!
So quite simply....we flashed a file that was built for a different carrier and are now marked as that carrier in different areas of the network.....this WILL conflict with other things as more of us use our devices at different levels!
ADDED AFTER..... Chad has just confirmed with Qualcomm that we have messed up our devices PRI! There is no way to revert from the VIRGIN MOBILE PRI!
The ICS leak may be our fix as it could contain a updated PRI that would be accepted by our devices partition!

I flashed it and went a few places and had what I think is extremely poor signal, but every time I checked my wifes phone's signal (stock Epic 4G) it is the same. Maybe just coincidence?
Good thing I just flashed the roms and not the fw *PheeeW*
Interesting. Curious to.see more feedback I myself did not update firmware. Signal seems normal.

4G still works with the firmware, I never said anything was wrong with 4G. So does hotspot.
Go to settings, about phone, network and tell me what it says for your network operator.
Also you did flash the firmware right? or did you flash the roms without firmware?

Only some are actually having problems, but the point is, if you flash Freeza's firmware there is a chance of you having problems. If you have problems, theres no way of fixing them.
Also the chance is pretty high as many users have been reporting of no 3G, VPN, etc.
With the virgin mobile banner am I no longer in the Sprint database or is it just cosmetic/visual that can be edited with eri.xml ???

I appreciate the warning, but maybe it was premature? I flashed the fw with no issues, and I've been on 2 ics builds and one 2.17 without problem.

I flashed Freeza's ics firmware but my banner never changed to virgin mobile even though it seemed to work since voicemail didn't work. I was able to run 1.13 RUU and it seemed like everything was back to normal.
I also haven't had an issues with any rom.
I flashed while on Newts one S. And was able to restore to Nocturnal Adrenaline just fine.

You can Nandroid back to a previous "rom" but, the "firmware" (if you flashed) will remain the same.

Rezound dying?

Hey,
Like many of you I have been trying out the new sense 4.0 roms as they come available. I usually end up back on bamf's 3.6 rom without issues through my nand backup.
Recently, my phone started freezing up after going back to the 3.6 rom. This never happened before. I tried flashing a new rom instead of using the backup and it keeps happening. Now, any rom I try ends up freezing, randomly restarting, and then after it restarts it will continue to bootloop showing only the white HTC screen.
My phone is s-off running the newest ICS leak. Not really sure where to go from here. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Since this isn't specific to any rom I made a new thread, feel free to move if this is the wrong area!
That's weird bro. Not sure why. I switch all the time between gb And ics Nd sense 4 with no issues. Maybe run the ruu again

OP, All you need to do is flash the firmware patch or proper kernel. Your phone is rebooting when gmail tries to sync, when you press a button that makes a noise, or when you get a notification?
It sounds like your issue is that your running a rom and firmware that don't match up. Just let me know what your firmware version is by booting to hboot with power+vol down
To the guy above that can't flash the ICS leak and doesn't have wifi, I'll help you fix it. That sounds like the kernel you installed and the roms base don't match up, like for example if someone flashed a new sense 4 rom and flashed a sense4 PH98IMG.zip from an older base that wasn't out of the newest rom.
Both of you send me a PM and I'll help you fix it.

[Q] Radio Question

I'm having terrible 4g issues. i got a replacement thunderbolt a little while back and flashed eternity which im not too happy with on there. but i never flashed a new rom because i was told that the new radios on the most current hardware would supprt it. sure enough it did but the 4g doesnt work like its supposed to. just goes in and out and stuff
since i'm not too good with radios i need to know which one would be the best to flash. and why if someone doesnt mind explaining it to me. thanks!

Are you currently running the most updated 605.19 stock radios?
You ARE if you go to settings, about phone, software information, more, and the baseband version reads 1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
If these are not the numbers you see, flash these radios from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24992678
If these are the numbers you see, then it should be working properly. If not, you may have installed an older version of Eternity. Check to make sure you flashed the most updated one.
Or the 4G in your area may be simply going in and out. Try flashing another ROM to verify this.

I'm pretty sure the LTE radios they used were from the 2.11.605.19 OTA. They may have flashed a different CDMA radio, but Idk. The leaked LTE radio causes most phones to reboot a lot.
Here's a link to the combo radios though. I suppose it never hurts to try them out... the outcome varies by phone.

But it is still recommended to use the 2.11.605.19 radios... which I posted a link for them above.

I've even had luck with the old 2.11.605.9 radios.
Try them if you'd like.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396408
Just be careful flashing different radios. If you flash a bad radio, it can brick you.
Also, I was always told to never flash the same radio that is already installed. So if you flash the .9 radios and they are currently installed, don't flash them again until you flashed a different radio.

[Q] Lack of 4g LTE

So I am a flashaholic, I admit it. And proud lol
However, I have noticed that I am no longer getting 4g/LTE connectivity. I keep getting network errors on pretty much every rom I try I have decent service in my area and my wife's Galaxy s3 is getting great service.
To get some service i have been switching to CDMA only is there something else I could do?

Take every PRECAUTION when flashing radios PRI etc...., they are they easiest way to brick your phone!
It happened to me. After flashing mean 6.4 I lost LTE. The only way I could connect is by switching to CDMA only. I reflashed different roms, unrooted, updated the software, re rooted, soff again, fixed permissions, profile, prl, called sprint and did numerous resets.
In other words, I think its toast.
I'm headed to the sprint store in the morning.

Problem running any custom kernels, rooted etc.

Title pretty much says it but just wondering if anyone has not been able to run custom kernels. It started with my attempt with Komodo etc., but I always get some form of screen flashes or massive FCs. Im am rooted with original 1.12 hboot. I have been able to successully load and run ROMs from Viper to AOKP, even CM10.1 but never able to run a custom kernel. I have wiped clean, reset and still no go. I am using the 2.2.1 TWRP so wondering if the newest TWRP would fix that ability? I know some of the EVO LTEs just wont run with a custom kernel but figured I would try.
Thanks in advance for any input.

I've had the same issue with Komodo. I'm S-OFF 1.19. I tried on the latest twrp, 2.3.3, and even on a tip re-flashed 2.3.1
I was able to boot after flashing with 2.3.1, sometimes...but it really wasn't stable enough to even try to use. Constant reboots, FC's, bootloops, etc
The device I'm having this issue on is an insurance replacement from asurion, the 4th one to be exact. i never had this issue on any of the previous devices...my first was new via preorder, that was stolen, and the first 2 refurbs were returned due to other hardware defects, although at least they could run a custom f***ing kernel.
as far as I've been able to tell nobody has found the issue that makes some devices not take to a custom kernel.

Thanks for the replies. I am S-OFF, current baseband etc. I haven't tried the voltage mod, but will look into that and come back for questions if necessary. If you have any tips on the voltage mods etc, feel free to pass them on. I have tried to use Goo Manager to download the newest TWRP but kept getting errors but haven't tried today. Will try to get the most recent on and look at voltage mods. Its not a huge deal, I get great battery life and its fast enough but I wanted to at least see if there was something specific that I have been missing to run the kernels. Thanks for all the replies!
The Komodo kernel worked only after updating TWRP to newest and I also had to use the voltage mod as neither would load without it. Great advice and for first time I am running custom kernel on top of PACMAN ROM. I tried capped at 1.7 then 2.1 both work but the 2.1 started to indicate some weird results within minutes of loading. I backed down to 1.9/384 and looks to be the sweet spot. Thanks again!
