Title pretty much says it but just wondering if anyone has not been able to run custom kernels. It started with my attempt with Komodo etc., but I always get some form of screen flashes or massive FCs. Im am rooted with original 1.12 hboot. I have been able to successully load and run ROMs from Viper to AOKP, even CM10.1 but never able to run a custom kernel. I have wiped clean, reset and still no go. I am using the 2.2.1 TWRP so wondering if the newest TWRP would fix that ability? I know some of the EVO LTEs just wont run with a custom kernel but figured I would try.
Thanks in advance for any input.

I've had the same issue with Komodo. I'm S-OFF 1.19. I tried on the latest twrp, 2.3.3, and even on a tip re-flashed 2.3.1
I was able to boot after flashing with 2.3.1, sometimes...but it really wasn't stable enough to even try to use. Constant reboots, FC's, bootloops, etc
The device I'm having this issue on is an insurance replacement from asurion, the 4th one to be exact. i never had this issue on any of the previous devices...my first was new via preorder, that was stolen, and the first 2 refurbs were returned due to other hardware defects, although at least they could run a custom f***ing kernel.
as far as I've been able to tell nobody has found the issue that makes some devices not take to a custom kernel.

Thanks for the replies. I am S-OFF, current baseband etc. I haven't tried the voltage mod, but will look into that and come back for questions if necessary. If you have any tips on the voltage mods etc, feel free to pass them on. I have tried to use Goo Manager to download the newest TWRP but kept getting errors but haven't tried today. Will try to get the most recent on and look at voltage mods. Its not a huge deal, I get great battery life and its fast enough but I wanted to at least see if there was something specific that I have been missing to run the kernels. Thanks for all the replies!
The Komodo kernel worked only after updating TWRP to newest and I also had to use the voltage mod as neither would load without it. Great advice and for first time I am running custom kernel on top of PACMAN ROM. I tried capped at 1.7 then 2.1 both work but the 2.1 started to indicate some weird results within minutes of loading. I backed down to 1.9/384 and looks to be the sweet spot. Thanks again!

Ok I am almost at the point of trying a Rom. My questions are..
1) being htvdev unlocked ota upgraded are there roms I cannot install? If so how can I tell.
2)again with the ota restriction can I use goo manager to install or do I need to use fastboot flash boot to do it.
3)looking for advice on a good Rom to install. Not sure about going senseless not that I am against it just I realize it is more than just the pretty face. Although the only widget I use is fancy widgets do not think that requires sence but I could be wrong. I would like the rom with the best multitask capabilities. Super user of course and buttons renapped for sure. The fastest most stable Rom woukd be best.
4) I have reset google wallet so will I be safe from bricking my chip?

Hi I have the EVO V 4g, I rooted it, flashed TWRP 2.2 and when I flash CM9 or CM10 it gets installed and then when it boots I get stuck on the loading screen animation. It keeps spinning and nothing happens.
I can flash my stock rom without any trouble but for some reason I can't get anything else to work.

BTW I tried using Goo Manager too and I'm having the same problem.
Thank you for your time!
You need s-off to flash the kernel, or flash it with fastboot.

I have the same phone as you.
A hour after I bought the phone, I was s-off, flashing all sorts of hboots, flashing different firmware, installing different kernels, flashing roms... You are not stuck with what you have lol.
I ran jb for a couple days. No camera was a deal breaker.
sudo passwd root
And then there's that there's not even a decent jelly bean Rom. Oh well I guess I'll just wait a little bit. No camera or no wifi or no sound. Another thing is that I've never done this before this is the first time I've rooted a phone and I am the kind of scared to proceed. Linux is a bit over my head and to be honest all this flashing ROM s fast booting was a bit overwhelming... And to think that in order to downgrade your hboot you have to technically brick your phone.
Not to mention I saw this guy on YouTube showing how he was running cm nine with anthrax kernel and how it was so great and fast made me want to do that too. He said it took him over a month to do all that...

You could get everything done within a few hours... if you're on 1.40 or 1.50 you don't have to brick to downgrade. Just S-OFF and then flash the older hboot.
CM9 is pretty stable and has everything working except 3D. CM10 is pretty stable, just doesn't have camera among other bugs.
I'm on hboot 1.57. Do I have to brick that or is it the same as 1.50?

If you're s-on, flash the kernel of the rom via fastboot and you'll be fine.
Put the boot.img from the rom.zip in your adb folder.
type in cmd (when phone is in fastboot usb (bootloader > fastboot)):
fastboot flash boot boot.img
exg. fastboot flash boot c:\Users\yourname\boot.img
(my adb folder is in my user directory)
I already spent my whole Friday night doing the s-off. Its done lol. Thanks tho

Kernels can be flashed while S-ON if you use Flash Image GUI or by using fastboot commands. As for flashable kernels through recovery, unlikely unless you set twrp to know you're s-ON so they can flash the kernel the proper way.

Kernels I've checked the Devs said they can't flash if S-On because it rewrites some part of the system and flashing the .img will brick the device .

I don't see where TLs post you quoted says anything about bricking devices. Rather, undoing ramdisk tweaks. And lately I've seen the word 'brick' thrown around far too loosely for things that aren't even nearly a brick.
From my Evo LTE, yup.
The kernel is unflashable because it is s-off only . I don't think it contains a boot.img for s-on , and even if it did , it would eliminate the tweaks . Thick said he might make a s-on kernel , so my question is answered . Thanks though !

I updated 4EXT, and I still am getting stuck on boot. I have wiped everything and tried installing multiple times. If it works on any HBOOT then I don't know what my problem is. Last I had on it was PAC Rom 4.3.
I'll keep messing around and try to get it to work. I'm not new to flashing roms by any means, but HTC devices are always so finicky.
You could try flashing boot.img through fastboot.
