I only recently got into the whole rooting deal, but i followed the instructions precisely double checking and everything went along well , after that i installed most of the apps from here, made a full backup with titianium backup, but then i decided to try and install a custom rom, which was where i made my first mistake, i made a backup of the current(stock) rom and then went straight on to downloading cyagenmod 7.2 to try it out on my phone.
When i started the install i obviously had the pre install options, i only left the one check there which was wipe delvik cache i think figuring that was all i needed to do. Phone rebooted and the loading logo started but didnt go past it and after it had reappeared for 3 times the screen just went in a white screen with differently colored horizontal stripes, i thought my phone was now bricked, but i managed to turn it off and turn it back on and get into recovery mode. I tried to do a recovery which didnt do anything, after that i just selected factory reset thinking it will get me back to the stock rom, but instead CM worked and finally got past the loading logo, i checked in the CWM if i had the backup i had made before trying to install CM and it was gone.
I want to know what i have done wrong(i obviously have), how can i reverse it and how to install roms properly(preferably in simple language). I already found this thread.
Phone: LG Optimus Hub (E-510)
P.S. I am missing the Play store app, is this normal for CM?
1. You got into bootloop because you didn't do factory reset/full wipe (the /data partition wasn't wiped, files on this partition were from stock ROM and weren't compatible with CM) -> this is the reason why it booted after full wipe. Full wipe only deletes data, it will not restore stock ROM.
2. '... i checked in the CWM if i had the backup i had made before trying to install CM and it was gone'
Are you sure you made a backup? Or didn't you delete it?
3. For the Play store - CM ROMs ussually don't have Google Apps in them, you have to flash them after CM installation (look in the ROMs thread for Google apps/ GApps)
1. Thanks for the explanation, im defineatly going to keep in mind to wipe the next time i attempt to install a custom rom. Is the stock rom still in my phone or do i have to look online for one?
2. I belive you are right, i do remember wanting to do a backup, but i might have forgotten about it, i did one now so i can have something to go back to just in case.
3. Dont really understand this, can you please direct me to a thread for this? I tried doing the flash CWM recovery which didnt do anything, could i try using my backups from titanium backup to get the apps back on the phone? It would be quite a mess to get all of it downloaded again.
Edit: i tried installing google play downloaded from other sites and whenever i go into it, it asks me to add an account, but when i press yes, it just closes.

First things first. Before you do anything else you need to do some reading in order to understand the Basics of Android. Otherwise your going to get yourself in a bind again. In my Signature your going to see some links if your on a PC. You should check them out, they will help with answers to a lot of your questions.
I cant thank you enough, i was looking for something like this! :good:
I will have something to read in my spare time, as little of it i have trough.
Your welcome . Glad I could help.

So i'm going to consolidate and give everyone a brief recap on how I fixed my phone since it required the use of SEVERAL posts. I figured someone will eventually get caught in the same situation I was.
This is by no means the best way, or the correct way to fix any phone, do this at your own pace and liability. I am, and no one mentioned in this thread is liable for your phone.
Please excuse any of my grammar mistakes, this is spewing out as I type.
History: Stock DI01 update w/ JT's Voodoo .2 OC Kernel.
Flashed JT's Super Clean ROM V.4 & Remix Incognito Theme.
** Market would no longer work. I had this issue before updating to the 2.2 market after the DI01 update, so I uninstalled and worked again, however, that option wasn't available with the ROM Flash.
I couldn't find a single fix that would work to get the market to work, even ADB pushing older market apk's to the system wouldn't fix it. I decided to do a flash of JT's Super Clean ROM V.2, that didn't fix the issue either.
**I was clearing data and wiping dalvik after each flash**
With nothing seeming to work, I decided to try Deodexe's Zinc ROM, and this is where **** hit the fan. After doing this, I sent my phone into FC boot loop hell. I was getting the process.acore FC everytime I pressed a key. I rebooted back into Clockwork, tried to recover from an old ROM I had backed up the previous day, notta. Damage was done. I was getting FC bootloop hell with a very crappy performance.
I decided it was time to Odin restore and start over. These aren't the exact steps I took, but if I had to do it over again, this is how I would do it. If at any point you're getting a process.media FC, remove your SD Card, and leave it out until you need it for CWM.
STEP ONE:
If you installed Voodoo (at any point, removed or not, do this step)
Thanks to adrynalyne
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804784
This was the main culprit behind my phone not working correctly after a complete restore. I moved this to the top of the list, because after that, it's downhill.
STEP TWO:
Completely Restore with Odin Restore Files
Thanks to fallingup
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782204
The instructions are a little un-clear, but do this. First, Only use the PDA option, and flash each backup one at a time along with the PIT file. You're not out of the clear yet. Read on.
STEP THREE:
Flash CWM Recovery (read my notes below)
Thanks to fallingup
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788099
After you've flashed CWM. Boot into CWM Recovery, Boot back in Stock Recovery and wipe data and cache. Boot back to CWM (select sd:update.zip) and do the exact same thing there. Reboot phone.
STEP FOUR:
Do a data factory reset
Even though you have just restored the **** out of your phone, you're still not there. Get through all the account setup fields and go to Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset.
After a reboot, you should be on your way to a completely 100% stock fixed phone. At this point, I would suggest making a ROM back up of this point before moving ahead with flashing again.
LAST STEP (for me anyway):
Restore apps via Titanium Backup
This restored most my apps and settings that I had already saved, including LauncherPro and the backups I had for that. If you haven't used Ti, then use whatever app backup app you do have, if you do indeed have one.
I decided to re-flash JT's Super Clean ROM V.4 found here. Thanks to JT
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=796171
I am also running the Remix Incognito Theme here: Thanks to frostman89
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=801867
Right now I'm mixed on updating a new Voodoo Kernel, I haven't decided if I want to do that again or wait for something else.
Thanks again for all the DEV support, hopefully someone searching will find this thread useful.
Pretty much my standard routine when trying new kernels.
I have a nandroid with my basic rooted setup (apps and data intact), so this doesn't set me back by a huge amount.
Just a few differences...
I use:
Odin (System, then kernel) (step only needed if things are *really* messed up...won't boot)
Boot into Recovery
flash update.zip to get into CWM
Wipe Data/Cache/Davlik
Reboot into recovery
run jt's voodoo_uninstall (flashes stock.zip and replaces mbr with stock mbr)
reboot into recovery
restore nandroid image.
This has yet to fail me and usually takes under 10 minutes. The nandroid image is key. Most of the time, I can skip the Odin step completely if I am not seeing anything truly, staggeringly horrific going on.
Again, jt's voodoo-uninstall seems to solve a lot more than just voodoo issues. This thing should get it's own topic/forum/entry in ROM Manager/zip code/nobel award...you get the picture.

+1 I agree
Nice write up! I'm sure this will help many people.
Thanks
This along with several other threads allowed me to recover from my own mental retardation.
Gotta remember to remove voodoo before doing stuff. I should know better.
Thanks again.
This is not working for me. I removed voodoo (using the uninstaller). I then did odin and my phone boots but I cant do anything past the unlock bc of all the fcs I get. I wiped the cache and data. CWM is not working, when I try to do the update.zip I get a "failed to verify whole-file signiture". - I deleted the voodoo folder from the sd-card after uninstalling voodoo, dont know if that contributed to the problem. Any ideas?

Sounds like you need to re-flash ClockworkMod through Odin. I'm guessing it got wiped out when you went back to stock.
so, first, i planned to install a new rom for my lg optimus one p500. and to do that, u must do nandroid backup first in the reboot into recovery mode. BUT, i did a mistake. i didnt install the recovery.zip first. so i did the three button combo hoping to open the recovery mode to do nandroid backup without installing recovery.zip first
then, when i do the three button combo, of course, there is no custom recovery appear at all because i didnt download the recovery.zip, and my phone is booting, right after that, my phone ask me what language my phone will use and told me to create a google account and finally press 'use phone'. then i realised my wallpaper has changed to default. and why i enter menu, all my downloaded apps and games are gone. that i dowloaded from the market and some from freeware. HOW CAN I GET MY DOWNLOADED APPS AND GAMES BACK?? THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW.
i think i accidentally did facetory reset on my phone. helo me guys is there any way i can get it back?? though its not a big deal if cant take it back. so i guess i just have to redownload them back. but just incase there is way to get it back so i didint make myself feel stupid redownloading them back when there is can get it back. so help me guys. i just want to know can i get back my downloaded apps and games back or not.
thanks, hoping to get some replys
HOME + VOLDOWN + POWBUTTON = RECOVERY. If you installed the custom recovery, you're taken to AmonRA/Clockwork/Whatever-you-installed. If you didn't install any custom recovery, you're taken to the factory reset mode thingy, which, resets your stuff.
I'm afraid nothing can be done However, I'm not sure if FroYo's way of moving apps to the SD moves the apk itself. If that's the case, you can browse to that directory and install the apks, but I don't think it's there.

thanks for your reply.
the problem is, when i did the home+voldown+powerbutton, i didnt install the custom recovery first, so thats why my phone taken to the factory reset. and all my stuff i saved in my phone memory are gone.
so... i guess i just have to redownload my downloaded apps and games again?
Yea, I find it stupid how they use the same buttons to factory reset to get into custom recovery... the same problem's been reported a few times here as well.
There is nothing you can do to get them back unless you wanna go to each app and download/install them again. But since you've already resetted everything, why not attempt to flash custom recovery and try new ROMs, literally, you have nothing to lose now =D

and yes, i will do that right after i install the custom recovery and do a nandroid backup =D
i planned to install megatron rom and most importantly, the touchscreen fix lag when you hold kernel, its annoying when i play pes its lag when i try to move the player.
thanks again guys for making my mind clear.
Hey guys,
Just Flashed to Bionix -V 1.3.1. Trying to restore all my apps and data with Titanium but it force closes pretty much anything i try and open. Is there something I have to clear before i can restore all my apps and data?
dont restore anything that has "SYSTEM DATA"
I dont think explained myself properly the first time. I mean anything i pretty much try and open that wasnt orignally on the phone gets forced close. Carhome, Opera mini, pingchat, reddit app, most of the games. Also id like to include that most of my apps were already restored when the phone booted up for the first time. Should I just reflash the rom?
if your apps and everything were there upon first boot it sounds like you had a bad install, something in the updater script got messed up when you downloaded. Redownload and Reflash sounds like your best option.
Yeah, something is not right there. A good install would wipe your phone (none of your apps should be there).
I would personally suggest going back to stock and then flashing. Its a super easy process and I wrote a guide in my signature, may help.
OK so ive redownloaded bionix and ive put it on the internal sd card. I rebooted in recovery. disable lagfix and rebooted. now its just sitting on the Vibrant boot up screen.... for about 15 minutes now.
I thought this **** was supposed to get easier..
NVM its rebooting now. Im reflashing it now, ill let you know after the reboot how it went.
Fixed.
Just restored 229 apps. **** me.
So is everything good?
Note that usually before flashing you are supposed to do a factory reset was it? I forget but the EDT Roms had the correct procedure to do in clockwork right before you flash a ROM so that you don't get issues like this. If your issue is still not resolved, look up an EDT ROM page and look the installation procedure.
Hello, im new to androids and rooting, and i own a galaxy s2 which i have just rooted with Chainfires CF-root which also installed Clockwork mod recovery. I have a couple of questions on how to install custom roms, for example if i would like to flash villainrom, what are the exact steps i need to take? I have read as much as possible but im not sure if the same applies to custom roms in general.
So far im thinking i have to put the custom rom on my phones sd card and then flash it via clickwork mod, however i have read something about doing a nandroid backup and data wipe bdfore flashing the rom. Ideally i would hope somebody can do a quick step by step guide explaining the above, and tell me weather this applies to custom roms in general?
Im very grateful for any help, thx in advance
Once you have rooted your phone make sure you have enabled usb debugging.
Go to settings, applications, development, enable usb debugging.
Then connect phone to pc, and transfer rom.
Then boot into recovery mode, to do this switch phone off, then press vol up, home and power.
Then wipe data, wipe cache, go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache.
Then go to install zip from sd card, select zip, click ok and cwm will take care of the rest
Thx so much for the breakdown of how to do this, will this cause me to loose all data?

Yes you will lose all data.
It's worth doing a backup, you can use titanium backup.
Download it from the market.
I don't tend to back things up, as contacts etc are synced and backed up with my google account.
And I just redownload my apps.
You'll find some roms don't wipe data, but it's generally advisable to always wipe before flashing any rom, and therefore backup if you have a lot of data.

Yeah pretty much the same for every rom.
It's always worth reading the first post in every thread though, as I came across a rom recently that could only be flashed using odin, I think it was litening rom.
But if not 99% of custom roms can be done the way I described
And I know what you mean about needing things step by step, these forums seem very complicated at first, the best advice I can give you is to read read read.
When I first joined earlier this month everything seemed so complicated but it's fairly straight forward when you get used to it.
I now flash about ten times a day, but I have a problem lol

Sorry for the delayed reply, lol jeez 10 times a day, i get how it can be so fun and addictive though, trying custom roms and themes etc.
As i said though im new to android, came from an iphone 4 which i always used to jailbreak.
And yeah i know what you mean, im doing my best to read as much as i can, but here on xda things move so fast and theres that many different things to learn it gets scary hehe.
Im still to try and flash a rom, i was going to try villainrom first, but do you have any other suggestions on which devs/roms i should check out, seeing as all this is new i might aswell get some practice in....
I do have another quick question, when i connect my fone via usb, which folder do i put the zip rom file into, is it External SD?
Anyways thanks again for your help, really appreciated!
EDIT* got it sorted!
Yeah ten times a day isn't an exaggeration either lol
I find what happens is I flash a rom, then a dev releases an update for another rom then I flash that, then I flash a different modem, then I find another rom, then another update and the cycle continues
You said you sorted it, but the rom zip file just goes in the root of your internal memory.
It's not overly important as you can find the file through cwm anyway.
As sometimes I'll download a rom through my browser and then it goes to the downloads folder.
But if I download it on my pc, I will just transfer the file to the root of my internal memory on my phone.

Yeah thanks again i managed to get it sorted i guess i overthink things sometimes, but i followed your guide above and now im running villainrom
had to do a bit more reading/asking on the backup/restore front, knowing what the diff between nandroid/titanium is etc, and how and which to use to restore.
Also you mentioned above about backing up your contacts with google, i tried to do that but couldnt seem to, how did you manage it? as i cant restore contacts from my windows pc via kies right? now that im rooted with a custom rom.
Anyways thx again for the help pal, you've been awesome!
This will help anyone who keeps having flashing issues.

THIS IS ONE QUICK/SIMPLE ERROR FREE ROM FLASHING PROCEDURE
This should eliminate a few posts saying, stuck in download mode, stuck at logo. just vibrates and them MANY other issues that somehow, everyone seems to find.
Here is my quick rom flashing process I use ALWAYS (yes always)
THINGS YOU NEED ON extSDCARD
1. Extra kernels (2 or 3 you know works for your device)
2. Optional: 2 recoveries that can be flashed (I use CWM & TWRP)
3. Optional: apps.zip (a zip created from Titantium BU, containing Root Explorer, TU Backup, Quickpic, ES File Explorer and Terminal Emulator)
Flashing the rom: TOUCHWIZ/AOSP ROMS
1. Backup current rom (to the extsdcard)
2. Complete wipe, (I do complete, some people do not) Complete = No Issues [FACTORY RESET + CLEAR CACHE + CLEAR DALVIK CACHE + CLEAR DATA]
3. Flash the rom
4. Flash the kernel (your device kernel) (I know some roms have their own kernel) this is where your problems start.
AGAIN: FLASH YOUR KERNEL, you KNOW it works. 1 more time FLASH YOUR KERNEL. (you can experiment with other kernels after you boot)
AOSP ROMS - require you to flash gapps before you boot. [This is not required for TouchWiz roms]
5. Boot the rom.
FINISHED!!!! SUCCESS!!!
Total time to flash a rom:
7-10min
Errors - NONE
This goes for every rom in my guide.
TIPS:
This flash procedure is for Touchwiz Roms, if you are flashing AOSP roms, you must flash the gapps package associated with the rom you are flashing.
**** SGH-I337M Users: Often requires flashing a different kernel than the one included in most ATT ROMS. Any GT-i9505 kernel will work and Adam kernel and Faux kernel are both confirmed working for us Canadian users.
Note: Flash KERNEL directly after ROM then reboot device.
[Special thanks to blyndfyre for this helpful tip].
The extra recovery I flash if a rom does not like the recovery I am using.
Yes, you can flash recoveries back and forth.
Apps.zip I flash after the rom is up & running. This I use to get the rom setup (like root explorer and others needed)
I am in no way responsible for anything that may do damage to any device - Use these tips at your own risk - period!
If you found this useful in any way, please hit the THANKS button for my effort.

I've been running into a lot of issues when trying to flash different ROMs. For instance, right now I'm on CleanROM 1.6 - I just tried to install PureGv2.
Steps I took:
Have Goo and ROM Manager installed after clean install of CleanROM 1.6
Flash CWM from ROM Manager
Install Recovery Script from Goo
Reboot into recover from Goo
TWRP loads
Wipe data, cache, dalvik, etc
Install PureGv2
I forget the error off the top of my head but it doesn't install
In a nutshell I'm asking what am I doing wrong? Do I need to flash another kernel?
Flash your verizon kernel. Correct. I know it is a vzn rom, but do it anyway.

Was looking through Tomsgt's Youtube channel and stumbled across a video of his that showed his "About Phone". Everything was identical to mine, so I'm still a little lost as to why I can flash certain ROMs but not others. Sac/Gru's ROM soft bricked my phone, Hyperdrive5.7 didn't install, CleanROM does. It's just funky...maybe I'll just Odin back to stock, flash the MDK and start fresh.
Could the downloads be a problem? I downloaded 2 of the ROMs from work today on a 50meg pipe and they didn't work.
Do you download the ROMs to your phone or to your computer and then move them to your SD card?
If you download to your phone, do you move them to the SD card or leave them in the download folder on the internal storage?
If you do the latter, do you use a micro SD adapter or plug the phone in and move them that way?

Alright sounds good. Flashing back to stock later today then re-rooting
thanks for the help
Remember always do a BACKUP before you do anything.
First off, big thanks for this thread.
Now I'm running Cleanrom 1.5. If I wanted to install a new rom can someone please explain exactly what I do to go about it? As jargon free as possible would be awesome.
Sent from my SCH-I545
I certainly scared the carp outta me the other night. I'm using the Carbon ROM and while I do like it, I miss a couple of the S4s features. I picked what looked like a good modified stock ROM and proceeded to flash it.
I'm using Goo and TWRP for the job. I checked of all 3 boxes for clearing cache, davik and factory reset.
Then I chose the file and started it.
The first result, it acted like if was doing everything but nothing changed. Phone still worked fine.
On the next try, I waited for TWERP to start and I reselected the ROM I wanted and flashed it.
When it booted up, I was very happy to see the original screens come up. Then it stopped on the one with the Verizon check mark. The blue LED slowly pulsing and nothing else for about 30 min. I removed battery to try and start over. Same thing again.
Time to goto my backup and restore my phone back to Carbon.
IT FAILED.
Now my phone is stuck in a weird looking boot up loop. After a few tries I was able to get into recovery
mode. TWRP started loading, froze and crashed! Even though I am a total noob at this, I still did not panic.
I'd restart my phone by removing the battery, going into recovery mode and then wildly press every button on my phone hoping to break the loop. It worked! I chose a different save and tried it all over again. FAIL.
ON the next I wiped every bit of old data off. Chose Factory restore crossed my fiingers....it work! My phone is fine now.
Thanks to that ordeal and this thread I think I know what I did wrong even though this never happened to me. before.
1) WIPE THE DATA
2)INSTALL A COMPATABLE KERNAL FIRST

I'd restart my phone by removing the battery, going into recovery mode and then wildly press every button on my phone hoping to break the loop. It worked! I chose a different save and tried it all over again. FAIL.
ON the next I wiped every bit of old data off. Chose Factory restore crossed my fiingers....it work! My phone is fine now.
Thanks to that ordeal and this thread I think I know what I did wrong even though this never happened to me. before.
1) WIPE THE DATA
2)INSTALL A COMPATABLE KERNAL FIRST

I can not stress enough HOW IMPORTANT THE KERNEL IS!
Hmm so everyone is a now a Oriental Flash Master from the far East now huh?

Flashing Questions
So, if you just need to add something, like different Kernerl, do you have to wipe and start from scratch?
Should you.
If so, and you backup apps and data in Titanium, then what you do a full wipe, flash entire rom, and reinstall the apps and data associated therewith?
Last, I have asked this but cannot seem to get an answer.
Installed Hyperdrive 7 (also had 5.7 and 6). Rom is super smooth and fast, working like a charm. but I want Verizon Visual Voice Mail.
I tried to copy the apk file to the devices system/app directory but get permission denied message....tried to install, and get failed message....

did you set the permissions for the app? That should work actually. Look at one of the apps in that directory, and set the permissions the same for the voice app. Reboot and see what happens.
Good luck.
May want to post this question also in my guide thread.

Sorry if this is dumb, but how do I know what kernels for sure work with my device and how do I get them to my external sd card? I suppose the one that is currently on my device(how to get that to sd?), but what others?
Thanks.

Please bring the question over to my thread up above. It shows also what kernels to use. We will help there.
Another noob question: so you still advise flashing a kernel even if the ROM creator says that the ROM comes with the appropriate kernel and that no extra flashing is required? I've got the Verizon Galaxy S4 variant and specifically am thinking of Dubbsy's Google Play Edition ROM.

You would flash the rom, and after, flash your verizon kernel, simple as that.
