[Q] GT-9100p Orange UK - Android 4.0.4 ROM - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I got my Galaxy Samsung SII repaired by Samsung, it came back with 4.0.4 (but went to them with 4.0.3). The info when I got it back were:
Model number
GT-I9100P
--
Android version
4.0.4
--
Baseband version
I9100PBVLPB
--
Kernel version
3.0.15-I900PBVLPC-CL1020445
[email protected] 153 #3
SMP PREEMPT Mon Aug 13 13:55:36 KST 2012
--
Build number
IML76D.BVLPC
I rooted the kernel and then used used a CWM Recovery of my phone (rooted kernel only 4.0.3) to recover SMS/Call log/Apps etc. I've reflashed the latest stock 4.0.3 ROM (I9100PBVLPA_I9100PORALP9_ORA.tar), but Kies still isn't giving me a 4.0.4 version to upgrade to.

I cannot find any reference to an Orange UK 4.0.4 ROM to upgrade to. Has one been released into the wild or are there reports of other Orange UK users getting them OTA or Kies?

As far as I'm aware orange ppl have yet to receive ics and are officially still on gb

Ignore that this says 4.0.3. Its BVLPC and was released in August. Same as the 4.0.4 ROM you had on your phone when you got it back. I would say that this is the 4.0.4 ROM. Dont know why Kies isnt giving you the option to upgrade to it, but use Odin to flash it. It'll work just like a normal upgrade and keep all your settings/apps.

Aha! That does sound excellent. It is wierd that Kies didn't do anything, especially as tonight it did a minor Kies update when I fired it up this afternoon and only installed Kies two days ago. I used a spare Win XP machine at work to connect to my phone, but usually use my mac at home. I'll try the Mac tomorrow night. If that doesn't work, I'll try CWM Recovery to flash it from the microSD card with the August ROM.
Thanks for the reply

Haven't had the time to check this with Kies before now, but tonight when i connected my mac to the S2, Kies spotted that I could update to the BVLPC.

Wait, if it came back with 4.0.4, and this is the version you wanted, why on earth did you go back to 4.0.3 just to go back to 4.0.4?
You had no reason to flash 4.0.3 to root your device, All you needed to do was to flash kernel.

I didn't realise the CWM backup would restore the entire partition (in kernel) beyond two stock ROM generations. That was a mistake! The goal here was to flash it with a 4.0.3 and then use Kies to take me to 4.0.4.

Could anyone upload this please, i flashed the i9100 one to get rid of the warning triangle but now my phone thinks its a i9100. I did not not it would change everything.
Anyone have a solution for this ?
Have a look at the files in my Dropbox. Original Zimage for BVKI3(Orange Uk) and CF-root Zimage. Put the Zimage on the root of your phone sd card.
Flash from HC-KTool or CWM

You are one lucky dude.Flashing the bootloader of a different device and surviving to tell the tale, albeit with a little personality crisis?Wicked.
Well, wait for the opinion of someone more experienced than me,but I think that flashing the normal I9100p bootloader will sort things out.
bootloader =/= kernel.
Sorry was rushing out this morning. Try here...

Then head to the download page.
Thanks for the help so far.
Some how I have now bricked my phone or semi bricked should I say, I was flashing a old gingerbread back up from ics which worked but when I tried to restore my ics backup it failed. So I used CheckFUS downloader and got the latest fw for my device, put my phone into download mode and plugged into my pc, it come up as COM:4 in a yellow box but I got a odin fail, I can only boot into download mode. Any ideas ? im reinstalling kies now incase its a driver issue
Make sure kies is not running in the background. Use the original USB cable that came with the phone. Download the firmware again," might have been a bad download.

I ended up flashing it using the laptop instead, fresh install of kies. Worked first time back to stock 2.3.6 now tho. Here we go again.
Thought the official ics for the i9100p would be released by now tho
Ics as been released by some network providers,(02 & H3G) over here. but nothing at all for I9100p yet.
Orange and 02 plan to release it here sometime this month but its a wait and see game.
Im on Omega ver 9 ICS at the moment. NFC is not supported, but not a great loss. When Orange finaly release ICS for the I9100p, I will try it and regain NFC.
Rooting and deletion of the Orange bloatware will follow that.
Its going to be released this Thursday.

[Q] No firmware update possible - I9100 - GINGERBREAD.XWKF3

Hi there! I hope someone can enlighten me. I've never been able to update my SII since I got it, now it's almost a year ago in Belgium (so I'm stuck with GB 2.3.3). KIES says I've got the latest firmware version, and I get the same thing via FOTA.
Now it seems as if ICS provides some battery saving, among some other features, so I'd like to update the firmware (at least for once!)
I would like to avoid rooting, flashing and so on... although it seems as that's the most practical way to follow
So, thanks a lot in advance to anyone who could help me

OK, I've tried that and odin is not recognizing my phone... The firmware is there, I'm in download mode. I've switched usb ports... This is a bloody nightmare!
Last week I told a friend of ñine to try to update hers and she did it straight away through FOTA... and she had bought it only 6 months after me! What a bunch of wankers these Koreans!
friend of mine had the same problem with his s2, i found out his problem was caused by his phone being locked to a provider and because of this he had different kernel from me. he got update several months after me...
this because of provider's own extra apps on the phone...!
Just flash via Odin

I9100XWLPM (4.0.4) - Russia (SER) on I9100XWLP7

Hi,
I have rooted my phone today (woop woop what a difference) and I'm looking now for non branded firmware ICS 4.0.4.
In Original Android Development group there is I9100XWLPM (4.0.4) - Russia (SER). Do you think it will work on my I9100XWLP7 (UK Three network)?
Thanks
Karl
Nah
My opinion? Stick with 4.0.3, the leaked 4.0.4 seems to have caused nothing but trouble.

Its personal choice if you want 4.0.4 have a look here http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9100&r=1#regiona
Open Europe version (includes UK) is LQ5 from the latest release list about 4 down from the top, I have it on mine and it works fine, just downloaded it and flashed it over my rooted 4.0.3 version without performing any wipes of Dalvik or doing any factory resets.
Then rerooted with ICS - CF-Root v5.5:LQ5 from Chainfires thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 post 8
I have not found any problems with version of 4.0.4

You have been fortunate to avoid the circumstances where there is a possibility of hard bricking your phone. (which admittedly isn't too hard, but still)
FYI - see here.

Siyah isn't 100% working on that Rom. Bluetooth, Video playback, camera preview and connecting to USB isnt working with all other non Stock kernels.
Just to save you the trouble I have literally tested all the kernels today and none of them work correctly at the current moment

If you flash XWLPM DON'T wipe data/factory reset, it can cause your phone to hard brick it can damage EMMC chip and only way to fix is a new board apparently!
I'd stick with XWLP7 from what I've heard there's no significant difference on LPM.
Only if you wipe via CWM mate, stock should be fine.

Latest official released Android version for S2??

Is 4.0.3 the latest official android version for galaxy S2?
maybe, maybe not. It differs from country to country. But in most cases, yes.
There's a site where you can look it up, the status of official updates..but I'm not sure about xda's rules regarding links to other sites. So I'll let you try that out yourself
4.0.4 is latest and soon we will get 4.1.1.
Im on 4.0.3 and KIES says i have the latest version?
Because Kies checkes latest firmware for your CSC.
Visit http://sammobile.com/firmware and choose FW for your own.
Like I said, its probably the latest version for your country (or carrier). 4.0.4 is the latest official firmware, but its not released worldwide and for every operator, in the case of operator branded phones.
Im currently in Germany, it seems that there is no official 4.0.4 update here yet...
Depending how quick the Jelly Bean update arrives, I expect some countries may skip to this instead of having 4.04
Im not in the hurry i bought this phone 4 days ago and i dont want to mess something up, i rather w8 for official updates...
I hear 4.0.4 is pretty buggy. I was looking forward to this update and now I'm thinking, even if it comes to Canada, I may not apply it. Instead wait for 4.1. But I'm reeeeaaally thinking about rooting it now and end this waiting!

4.0.4 kernel may have brick bug on its kernel but it's no way buggy.
In fact, 4.0.4 is the most stable and smoothest Stock ICS version to date
4.0.4 is alot Smoother...
Anyways You can install any another Country's Rom but if you are not aware of what you are Doing. And not aware of Superbrick Bug..
Then i Recommend you to not to Try that..
But if You Still Want to Install Then do a lil research about Superbrick bug 4.0.4 before flashing..

Maybe its one of those firmwares that never got an upgrade to 4.0.4? Some will make the jump directly to 4.1. All assumption, I'm not too familiar with stock. If its official 4.1 you're worried about, you can always get it off samfirmware when an update for the i9100 is released.
Also, if all you were looking for is the stock 4.0.4 UI experience, you could always have had a 4.0.4 sammy rom. Wasn't necessary to unroot et al.
No i unrooted because phone was hanging too much ,and downgraded from 4.0.4 to 4.0.3 so if i want an upgrade back to 4.0.4 ill have to download a stock firmware of 4.0.4 from sammyfirmware and then connect it to odin again and change its firmware again ?
Odd..siyah has never given me any trouble. Phone hangs are anyways usually coz of the rom rather than kernel. But thats OT.
You could do that, yeah. Just be careful not to ever mess around with your phone if you decide to use a firmware that has the emmc bug. For a list of those, refer a sticky in the general section. To be safe..just stay away from stock 4.0.4. Its what I'd do. Rather live with the 4.0.3 UI elements till 4.1 releases than risk rendering a phone completely useless.
