Win xp 32 bit works fine, did you follow the instructions exactly as written and did you remember to use it as administrator. It sounds like a bad usb port, cable, or you had an old driver installed.
I can confirm that Windows XP 32-bit works without a problem. Although, if you ask for support, you'll probably end up with a headache from the dev team.

i use shelltools to bring it back?
Is your G4 unlocked? If so, just flash with any ROM... you are presently at what is called the "bootloader screen"
well i have windows vista and the roms bootloaders dont work and the people said i need xp dont work...but shelltools does...so im wondering if i use shelltools with i guess wizardlove if it will work
You could try this to get the RUU working in vista:

It didn't work for me though. I'm using latest VMWARE beta with XP on it. Don't think you can revive your phone with shelltool in vista.

I recently bought an HTC Hero and the last several days I have been looking to "root" it and put a custom rom on it.
I have the non-cdma, european version of the HTC Hero
Firmware - 1.5 version
Build # - 2.73.405.5
I would like to root it using Windows 7 but I can do it on XP if need be but I have been reading so many different things on you have to have this firmware version or this build number on this operating system so I guess what I am trying to ask is is what would be the best tutorial to follow in order to root my Hero and put a custom rom on it with the info I have given above? If anyone needs any other information just let me know.
Thanks!

Use BTDAG's guide linked in my signature. Read the whole thing through then bookmark it.
And I HIGHLY recommend using an XP machine. I wasted HOURS on my Win7, but worked 1st time on my XP one.
I appreciate the help! I've read through this guide before but I am not sure if I would have to use the "Gold Card Procedure" or not. I'll be using a 1GB Sandisk SD card if that helps.

Just start at the beginning. If it throws up errors then you will need to use the goldcard method. If you do run into problems write down what happens and what error messages you get so guys on here can help out without guessing.
I got it! I installed the Villian rom though. Is there any rom that is better?
For Android 2.1 that comes very highly recommended by a lot of people on here.
Im using MCR3.2 but its 1.5.
But have a play,... swap and change every few days. and do Nandroid backups before you switch.
Have fun.
Im not too impressed with the Villian rom... Its so laggy. Im going to try the MCR3.2 and see how that works out.
You could try mr_bang 2 beta 2, I found it very responsive and 100% functional (no gps or by issues).

It was the first and only ROM i've flashed,... I cant see what else I could possibly need from another ROM,... and this new overclock kernal now makes it... well i dont even know what to say, its actually like having an upgrade, its just so fast!!!!
Good to know guys. I appreciate all the help. XDA has been good to me ha
Tell me about it,... I'd still be using a Nokia if it wasn't for this site!!!!

You got one of only 2 options right now.
1. Find a PC somewhere and use that.
2. Install Windows via Bootcamp on the Mac.
Running any of these s-off tools is sketchy via a Virtual Machine like Parallels or Fusion. Those installs don't access the hardware right.
Better option - ubuntu live cd or install

So I bought this HTC Amaze (unbranded) and it's pretty nice, but unfortunately I can't get the 4.0 OTA update for it through the system.
I read a couple places that there's the t-mobile one I can flash, but I'd need to install the HTC drivers and then update from there.
My big question is.......... Why is the driver saying that it's incompatible with Windows 8? I disabled the driver signatures from settings already, but still it doesn't work.
Has anyone been able to find a way around this besides dual booting or downgrading?

Follow this guide for upgrading your unbranded amaze.
Don't follow any other way you have only this way to upgrade.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2167596
And download drivers which are compatible with win8 . Or search on Google that how to dual boot?
And follow the steps

Well if you have around.. 5-10gb free space in a none system local disk boot windows xp it'll take around 20-30min to finish the process it's a easy you won't have any problems but there might be windows 8 drivers look throughly
EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2061435
take a look at that

I downloaded the drivers v. 4.3.0.001 and Hasoon's all in one tool kit (versions 5.1 and 4.0.1, neither of which will launch)
Drivers were apparently installed properly cause in Programs and Features, they're there.
The tool kit just won't launch.
I installed android sdk before all this.
Well actually you really don't need the aio kit.. Put a lil effort it's easy
