[Q] USB audio out - AT&T LG Optimus G

I recently "upgraded" from the Motorola Atrix 4G to the LG Optimus G. Wanted to know if there is a way to have audio out from the micro-usb in a manner similar to the Motorola car dock where the usb charging also conveys audio to a 3.5 mm plug. Currently I am using a vanilla dock where I have to repeatedly plug in a 3.5 mm audio cable and usb. It would be great to have only one cable connected. Any ideas ???

Same boat as you. (Even came to this phone from the Atrix )
I have not been able to figure anything out so far. Right now, I am using the Infuse car dock, which has audio out on the dock itself, but it will not work with the LGOG.
I really miss the ability to just dock the phone in one step without having to connect any additional wires.

Looking for an answer to the same question. I'm hoping it might just be a software tweek. Otherwise I'll use Bluetooth to output audio to my car, but I'd rather not.

Have been thinking about the same thing. Picked up the OG last weekend coming from the Atrix 4G. I have the car dock and was hoping that the base/craddle pins just launched the car dock app. and the charger/audio was in the combo cable that came with the card dock. No such luck. The combo cable does not even charge with it connected directly to the OG. So now I am thinking of breaking down the dock and coming up with a way to connect the broken down parts directly to the phone. I have a spot in my car that will work perfectly without the dock so I really don't care about the dock/craddle.

Atrix 4G ran a specialized software when it's put in a dock or the laptop docking station. LGOG doesn't have that special software. I don't think Motorola will port the special software over to LGOG or any other phone manufacturers.
Your best bet is LG will implement their version of this and release it for the OG. I won't hold my breadth for this to happen.

I disagree.
The phone comes with a custom version of LG's car home app. (Correct me if I am wrong).
I would not be surprised if we have an official OEM car dock available in the future.
Also, how are you guys expecting to fit a LGOG into an Atrix dock????
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app

I don't need the dock to place the phone in my car. So I was thinking of breaking down the plastic and using the "plug/connector" that just uses the pins to the USB connector on the phone. I did not think it was software related since I was running CM10 along with the app "CarHome Ultra".
But now that I think aobut it, I'm not sure the hardware will work since I'm sure the pinouts will be different between the Moto and LG. I don't care about the auto launch...even though that is a nice feature to have. I would just like to have my phone charging while driving and take calls via the AUX when needed.

Audio out through USB will not work
So, I emailed LG asking about support for audio out to which they replied:
------Reply to Your Inquiry-------
The only way to get audio out from a USB is if the Optimus G supports this which it does not I&#39m afraid.
Audio out is not an option, Jonathan.
I hope this information helps and should you have ANY future concerns or questions, then please don't hesitate to email us again or PREFERABLY call LG toll free at 1-800-243-0000 anytime, day or night to speak with a Live Representative!
Thank you again for contacting LG Electronics, it was my pleasure to serve you, many thanks for being an LG Customer, and be blessed, Jonathan!

That is stupid in my opinion. Perhaps there is a hack then...

Do you have the link where you emailed them?
I would like to ask if there is an official car dock in the works.

Has anyone tried a USB dac? I don't have one, but I've read about people using them on other devices such as the gs3. However, I think you need to have USB otg functionality, which I thought someone else said isn't natively available on the AT&T lgog.
I hope to get the lgog this weekend and would also like a car dock solution like my atrix 2.

Well coming from the Captivate, audio out via USB was originally promised by Samsung but never came to fruition. Eventually someone figured it out and wrote into some kernels. I'm sure there is a way to do it for this phone as well. Just need someone willing to give it a shot. Although development for this phone seems to be lacking in comparison to the Captivate so it may be a while before this comes if ever.

USB audio is supported in jellybean. I think a dev could make it work with ics.
Hoping when jellybean is out I can hook up my D12 via USB (or even just my fiio e11 with a microusb LOD).
the sg3 guys are hooking up all kinds of amp/dac setups with great results.

I would imagine that it is very possible. The mini USB on the LGOG supports an hdmi out with a simple adapter. Seeing how hdmi sends audio it would seem that the LGOG has the hardware to send audio. I'll see what other info I can find.

[Q] Headphone Adapter

has anyone purchased this headphone adapter:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.35001
I just got it and I can't seem to get my phone to recognize that it's plugged in and I"m wondering if it's the adapter, phone or maybe the rom
I'm running CM 6 on a rogers dream.
Won't Work
Sorry to tell you. So far as I can tell it doesn't work on the dream. I did the same thing. Same site. One hit I had off a www google search said it worked on 1.5, but after 1.6, it no longer worked. I ended up using this. Jabra BT3030 It works great. With a little bit of hacking you can get this BT Necklace
When I had my G1, I had one of these badboys and it worked like a charm: http://cgi.ebay.com/OEM-HTC-TMobile...096028?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item4cf2078e9c
Got the same one for my Tattoo (click) and it's not recognized, is there no way to make it work, like some driver or anything?
I can confirm that the splitter which can teh man linked, the YC A300, does work on my G1 running BiffMod 2.0
This makes me suspect that the relevant driver is either in Cyanogen Mod 6, or the Pershoot kernel which BiffMod uses. I haven't tried to break it by flashing another kernel. I do hope this at least gives you a starting point.

i have an adapter but not exaclty this one..
if its not working you can try an app called "sound route switcher" or sth similiar.
it forces your phone audio output through your desired channel. so i got mine to work on donut (before it was patched on a cm)
but my adapter uses more battery than being connected to my bluetooth headphones >.<

Thanks, I found this post useful.
A quick search on eBay revealed many of these for five bucks.
I was looking for an adapter that would let me charge and use the headphone port at the same time.
I don't know why they couldn't just put the d**n headphone port on the phone itself. I guess it would have cost them an additional 35 cents per unit. I hate the "break this port and you're screwed" paradigm.

Kinda sad

Well my X10 usb port is broken and won't charge, so I decided I might as well get a new phone (I looked up trying to fix it and etc but came up with nothing). I bought the phone unlocked and had it imported back when it first came out so no warranty for me. Well anyway the point of this is I decided I don't want to spend so much money right now so I'm gonna stick with phones provided by my service provider which is T-Mobile US, so at the moment I have the choice between the Samsung Vibrant & the myTouch 4G and I just wanted to hear some opinions on that (I don't really like physical keyboards so the G2 is out) I'm still going to do my own research but its always nice to hear other peoples thoughts.
you could just buy a portable charger for the battery...
RS Online has micro USB-ports, and if you fear that won't look any good it's a good opportunity to hack it into wireless charging:
http://www.rs-online.com/index.html
http://www.slashgear.com/htc-evo-4g-touchstone-hack-adds-wireless-charging-video-1389601/
Um a portable charger wouldn't be able to help me if I need to connect the phone to the computer to do things like flashing and etc
Have you tried another charger? Had the same problem and a new charger worked, phoned my provider they sent me a replacement and I just swapped the charger.

Yeah tried multiply different ones. At this point I know its a fact its the usb port because its jiggling.
So what's your plan with the broken device? RMA, selling as defective, or leaving in a drawer?
If the latter then try fixing it first - it's not the first phone with a loose micro-usb port.

has anybody tried motorola's webtop?

on another phone especially the galaxy sII? wondering it would on another device.
It has a proprietary connector so no.
the mhl dongle? it can be had, but i don't it is available commercially in the us. happen to know if any non motorola phones with hdmi out has tried webtop?
http://motorola-global-eng.custhelp.com/rnt/rnw/img/enduser/oly_supdock_front_m.jpg
You have to connect both connectors at the same time. And if I read correctly, one of the two is a proprietary connector by Motorola.
no. i have the atrix. it's just micro hdmi and micro usb. the galaxy has mhl connection which can be used for hdmi out i believe. it's just hard getting mhl because hardly anything is using it right now.
Samsung provides an microUSB to HDMI cable. But then again, you can't connect both at the same time.
And I think the Atrix has some specific drivers (and a lot of modified Android OS files) too. While they can be dumped, you'd need to adapt them on a GSII ROM. And since it's quite useless, nobody will dive into this huge reverse engineering work.
Definately a no-go.
well some of the atrix webtop files have been pulled and that is part of what i was wondering if anybody has tried to do a quick zip with them and seen what happens. i'm pretty sure it isn't that simple because as you've said, probably custom files from motorola. to some peeps it might be worth it to be able to use webttop/lapdock but who knows how deep you gotta dig in. i don't have the skills for it and am not requesting it either. some phones have been able to boot into other os'es and such so this task isn't unsurmountable.
While it isn't surmontable, it would be pretty hard (not only there's some files related to the webtop (libs and such), but there's also a completely changed Android framework). So it would be a pain in the ass to adapt this with Samsung files.
And since there maximum 5 guys in the world who have both a motorola webtop and a Galaxy S II, there's not a lot of chances to have it working.
And again, there are not the right connectors. Even if the software is adapted, there's still the hardware issue.
Well thanks for all the answers. I was more curious about if other android users were curious about webtop and galaxy sii was a good forum to ask because it's a powerful phone and popular. I got the lapdock and it's pretty good for light duty utilization. And easier on the eyes. Thanks for your answers again.
I voided my warranty.

[Q] When docked w/ lapdock thinks its hdmi only, goes into webtop, cant use touchpad

Hey guys, I did a search for my issue, but found no relevant solutions.
I am using a much older ROM, Gingerblur 3.1 with v 1.83 and I just bought a new lapdock. The funny thing is, all the instructions came in Spanish, but I don't think that would necessarily be the issue. The weird thing is when I open it with phone plugged in, it does not go into lapdock mode, but on the phone I get prompted to go into Webtop or multimedia mode. I go into Webtop mode and it looks like how the lapdock mode should look, however, I can not use the touchpad or a USB mouse that I plugged in. However, on the phone screen itself, it shows a mouse pad essentially, and option to go to keyboard, so it thinks its only plugged in via HDMI to a screen only. The funny thing is though, if I do not turn the phone screen on by pressing the power button, it says No Signal Input: HDMI, which implies that it knows a phone is connected via USB since that screen does not come up when the phone is plugged in. I am also not using a case so I know it is firmly plugged in with no obstructions. Someone else had the same issue with a different ROM in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1598132&page=2
Please help! Is this a ROM issue? I was planning to switch over to the NottachTrix4G ROM, but it seems the same issue may be occurring there. I think I still have 30 days to return it, but I would love to resolve the issue. Any thanks would be much appreciated.
I had this problem. You buy from onesaleaday? Sent mine to Motorola for repair. Defective USB connector. Thread is in accessories forum. Moto couldn't find serial number in their system, but they took care of me.
Probably your documentation is in Brazilian Portuguese.......not Spanish. Look same but not same.
It is not a ROM issue.

It is in Spanish for sure, I can read Spanish. I bought it on Amazon from some reseller who had only one in stock from Bakersfield CA, which is a 2 hour drive from me. Thought it was a good idea. Should I return it? Or can Motorolla help me out with a product I did not buy from them?
I really feel like the USB is not defective, or that it at least is detecting my USB connection since it prompts the message about NO HDMI cable in place, which cannot be achieved unless the phone is plugged in. Obviously you can't test with just the USB connection alone and no HDMI, but my IT spidey senses are tingling. Could you link me to the thread you were referring to? I was looking for it but I could not find it.

Mine was doing exact same thing. There is a known issue where connectors, especially USB in lapdock do not stick out far enough to make a good connection. I called Motorola, they arranged overnight shipping both ways, no problems. Had it back in a week fully functional.

Glad I could help.
As an added note for anyone else, the shipping is handled better if you have them set up the RMA over the phone, and do not set it up yourself online.
They actually told me this themselves when I called them. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised at the customer service being as good as it was.

however, this solution actually resolved it for me, I should have trusted my IT sleuthing skills because I knew the USB connector was working since it was charging properly, let that be a lesson to anyone else searching for a solution, if your phone is charging while plugged in, the USB connector is working properly, this is probably related to the fact that I am using nottachtrix4g which I have seen mentioned before as an issue
I had posted previously that not charging was an indication of USB failure. None of the normal USB functions were working for me. My apologies if I sent you down the wrong road.

I sent mine to Motorola as well and got it back with a message that there was not a problem with the device. I was running stock Atrix when I first tested. Nottachtrix didn't work for me either.
I was under the assumption that the Lapdock was simply a HDMI monitor and USB Host. Have since installed CM10 (epinter) and still experiencing the same issue.
**Ninja Edit: Yes I'm a noob
I connect my lapdock and it works. After a few minutes the display still works but the keyboard/trackpad are unresponsive. Any ideas?
Just wanted to post up another suspected failure - i just received my atrix(Hebrew edition) lapdock from Ben's Outlet - no charging on the usb port with my bionic (dismantled the dock location to connect the wires before modifying the casing)
I'm guessing after all the reading in the forums I've done that the only option is to warranty claim with Motorola ?
I also noticed i have no serial sticker on the bottom(but do have the hologram and another model number sticker) - I'll have to check the box for the serial unless there's another way to get the serial number?
Thanks for posting up this discussion! Saved me hours of banging my head against a wall, i really wish the thing was working though...

Pushing audio through microUSB to head unit

So one thing I really liked about my iPhone was the ability to push audio through the charge port into my truck's head unit (radio) while charging. The head unit has a usb port on the front and it charges my phone, and if I put the phone into storage mode, the head unit can read the storage on my phone. Now I want to push audio from apps like Google Play Music and iheart radio. Is this possible? I'm rooted.
Also on a side note, since I am rooted, can I update OTA without looking root? I used the steps from galaxys3root.com.

Sorry bud but most USB head units are mass storage or iPhone only. I'd invest on a Bluetooth headunit with audio streaming profile like the Sony MEX-BT4000P.
Get a windshield mount (had a factory one for my Atrix, loved it) and Bluetooth that bad boy. You'll also get cool stuff like car phone answering and if you use Vlingo in car you can made heads turn.
This feature will come with jelly bean

I've been trying to get this to work for about a week now. The guys at my local car audio place are just as frustrated as I am.
I even tried using the OTG connection, no dice.
Supposedly some of the new Sony units support MTP, but then you're using Sony (which I guess doesn't have a great reputation, I'm kind of new to this whole thing).
CM will probably get Mass Storage enabled at some point, but that still isn't an ideal solution.
Jelly Bean will offer true USB audio streaming, but from what I've read the device you are streaming to will also have to support it. Whether that support can be added via a firmware update or will require new hardware is something I haven't been able to figure out yet.
This is all very annoying since part of the reason I got my S3 was to finally upgrade the sound in my car. I know I can use an Aux or Bluetooth connection in the meantime, but if the Jelly Bean tech requires new hardware it will be a pain to sell my old hardware and re-install the new.
I guess at this point it's just waiting to see when/if headunits will support the Jelly Bean audio streaming.

The thing is, I don't have the money to get a new head unit.. I could just connect the aux to the unit. I also forgot to mention I have a Sony Xplod (Not sure of the model right now, but it's about 2 years old.)
I think I'm just forced to connecting aux and usb to keep it charged on my trips..
Mass Storage has been enabled for the International S3, so it's likely it will for the US version soon. That should solve a lot of your problems. Though as I said above, UMS is still not an ideal solution (but far superior to Aux or Bluetooth).

I'm a noob when it comes to Andriod.. I am a recovering iPhone user and do not know what most of the acronyms mean. I've looked around on google and can't find what they mean lol. OTG, MTP, and CM, what do they mean?

Once you pass 10 posts the 5 minute limit will be lowered to 2 minutes.
OTG = On the Go http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_On-The-Go
MTP = Media Transfer Protocol, as opposed to Mass Storage. I'm not clear on the reason for using it since it seems like UMS is more useful in almost every way.
CM = Cyanogenmod. The most popular and widespread Android ROM.
Ahh ok thank you! I should be getting close to that haha. And I guess UMS is something like Universal Mass Storage?
