Hi guys
I'm a noob when it comes to android and rooting. I wanted to know if I root my x10i can I go back to standard firmware if needed? And can I keep timescape?
I'm from South Africa and we have not received any firmware updates. I tried debranding and didn't like all the extra stuff I got in the install so I went back to my old firmware. If I root what happens to firmware updates? I understand the benefits but as I said I'm new so I don't really know what to do with a rooted phone.
Thanks any feed back will be appreciated

you can keep what you what and restore to unroot state .... but if you are new to android or linux DONT root you can bring the os to an unbootable state....
Is there no way back if I brick it?
How can I get enough info to know what to do. I'v neva used linex.b4

After rooting, you can go back to standard firmware the same way you did it after debranding.
From my understanding, if you update firmware normally you'll lose root. Otherwise, you'd have to update to the newest 'rooted' firmware as posted on XDA if you want to update.
Thanks man that really clarified alot. Do u think its worth it if I go for a root for the time being since there's no updates in my country
Thanks guys

If your firmware is really old (click left button>settings>About phone and read the build number at the very bottom, if it ends in 14 or 16 it is the older firmware) It seems worth it to update. Though apparently, the newest root method version (gives you firmware ending in 023) doesn't seem to be the best in battery life. You may want to stick with the link for 'OLD VERSION 1' in the guide (the link's crossed out, but you can still click it to download the files) that will give you firmware ending in 020 which I think gives better battery life.
Only prob is, flashing causes all your settings and apps to go away. So backup your messages and contacts and things. Your SD card doesn't get wiped, but the phone does.
I do have r14, that's y I wanted the update cz I know that 23 is out in other countries. I'll try the root and save my old files so that I can revert if I have a problem later on.
And in case off bricking is there a way to undo it?
Thanks
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
Real 'bricking' means the device is DEAD.
I had a problem where my phone gave an exclamation mark logo when booting, and thats all it did. I went through debranding (reflashing) again, and it worked after. So I guess if you get stuck, just reflash.
Ok great, as long as I can fix it if there's a problem I'll try it. Anyway thanks a lot. I really appreciate all the help and the quick replies. There's alot of stuff I still don't understand but I'll check the other posts if I don't get anything I'll put something up.
Thanks again

Edit:
How to root:
I followed the directions in this thread.
http://teamuscellular.com/Forum/topi...2Bstock++tar
Except for the stock kernel I used the FF24 one. I uploaded to here:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/usnhbh2n9ksj08s/VMAJKof_-C
This will get you root, but stay mostly stock.
Well I have a Generic Samsung Galaxy S2
Model: SCH-R760
Android version: 2.3.6
Baseband: S:R760.01 K.FF24
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-SCH-R760.XARFF24-CL1125314 [email protected] #2
Build: GINGERBREAD.XARFF24
I am looking for how to obtain root only. I believe this can only happen by flashing another Kernel, in which case I would like to know how to back up my current Kernel.
Any help with this would be great. I know source is available from Samsung, but I have not learned how to build from source yet.
Thanks,
Ralph McDade
BUMP Me too, exact model. Am wanting to root. Any one with any info on how?
to root it looks like you are going to have to flash another kernel. If you have US cellular there are backups and rooted kernels. If you are on another carrier, you can flash the us cellular kernel and then reprogram the phone for your carrier. The problem with this is depending on what kernel you are on, you may not be able to go back to stock.
I am working on contacting Samsung to see if I can get the stock software that is currently in my phone. I will keep you posted.
No, It's not a US Cellular phone
I understand that, mine isn't either. But it looks like we can use the kernel from the US cellular that has been rooted. Or wait till a one-click root comes out for 2.3.6. Which maybe never due to work being done for newer android phones. Sorry, who is your carrier. If we can find the stock Kernel we could modify it. Problem is Samsung has not release it, only the source.
Mine is [email protected] #2
My carrier is a local company called Pioneer Cellular. All of my stats (kernel, build etc) match yours exactly
---------- Post added at 07:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:25 PM ----------
Is there a way to pull the kernel from the phone using odin?
I will let you know what I figure out. I am going to get in touch with my provider and see if they can provide the software. I doubt it though.
I have tried all of the one click solution none have worked.

Yes, we have successfully rooted. Follow the instructions in the following post. If you are on FF24 instead of FF18 then download the stock FF24 from page 2 in the same thread (post # 25 by mcdader) instead of in step 3.

Or follow the instructions in THIS post. They are the same as the ones above but with an FF24 link added to step 3.
Hey guys, I have got a generic CDMA sch-r760 and am looking to flash a custom kernel with cwm included. Any ideas where I can find one? Haven't had much luck okn finding mods for this. sch-r760 rooted, use on other cdma services?
So i have my us cellular galaxy s2 phone rooted with some app exnos abuse or something like that. What i am wondering is if there is some way to get this phone to work with other cdma services such as verizon, verizon prepaid, straight talk, or even U-Prepaid( i guess this is us cellular, but they wont let you use a us cellular contract phone... Say what!?) Just so we are all on the same page, i am very much a noob when it comes it flashes and kernals. I used to toy around with flashing basic verison phones so that they would run java apps, but thats about it(lg phones turned into super nintendo).
I have searched around, but the only thread i found asking this same thing had no solution and a bunch of ppl complaining how it was on the wrong forum. So i thought i could post here? I hope nobody minds overly much.
Anyway, if this is possible i would love to hear from someone maybe get me pointed in the right direction.
I aslo read that verizon will not add meid numbers to their database. Do you think it would be possible to take the ein and meid of a verizon basic phone and put them on my device? Would i be able to get 3g if i did ths or do you think they would view ot as a basic phone on verizon's zide?
For the MEID swap NO. It's basically your phones fingerprint, assigned to that device built in to the hardware . Although you could clone another phone if its the same, but that is a felony. So I wouldn't try it. But flashing to another carrier, would require the stock files for that particular device. I.e if ur going from say Alltel phone to USSC you could flash USSC stock file to your phone. But it would basically have to be the same model GS2>GS2 and hardware.etc

What so to clone the meid of one device i own to another device i own is a felony? I bet that freakin FCC is behind this!
That aside, i've seen people talking about scripts that allow a user to install a newer android version from a similar device on another network, then the script edits the back to be able to use uscc, is there any way i can manually edit these settings so that i can connect to another network? I'm sure i can convince someone at straight talk to add my meid to their cdma service if their towers see my device. What with that new thing they offer send u a sim card for any gsm phone. Can anyone point me in the right dicection on switching carriers this way?
Uhg sometimes text entry gets so glitchy on this thing, makes it hard to go back and chamge aomething when my curser is out of place five characters, this is my excuse for any the spwllig issues.
Hi guys I am kind of new to this forum and really like all the website with so much information !
I am turning to you because because my friend wanted to buy an SGS 2 and bought one from some random guy whom he has no contact with.
The problem is now that the phone seems to be rooted because there is an yellow triangle that follows in the start up. I wonder if anyone knows how to see what kind of room is installed on the phone? I ask this because because the phone has been unlocked with the simunlock app but
the network connection is so bad, I´ve managed to make 1-2 calls to see that the phone works but i get max 1/5 bars in the connection barometer.
This made me think that maybe the root is bad performed by the guy that did flash the device from the begining.
If you guys have any kind of tweaks or ideas what to do I would really appreciate it.
I gathered some information that might help. This is taken from t he status menu in the galaxy S2.
Would it maybe help to restore everything to stock?

Sorry I choose the wrong section for my thread. Thanks to the MOD that moved it to the right one.
Root has no impact on signal strength.
But if you want to revert to stock, just download original firmware from http://sammobile.com/firmware, unpack and flash via Odin in PDA.

The ROM you use has no effect on your signal strength. The modem however, does. So you can try flashing a new modem if you're fine with the ROM besides the signal problems. ie.the UI, features offered, etc. Else you can flash your stock firmware for your region and that would solve your problem

Go to settings-wireless-mobile networks and in network mode check gsm only...if its on wcdma thats probably why u have poor signal

Thanks a lot for the answers ! I´ve already tried to switch to gsm mode, dosn´t get any better. I will try to flash to a different modem but I have a few questions. Does it matter wich modem is current on my phone before i flash to another?
And if someone could point me in the right direction about wich modem I should use for my region, I live in sweden and use a swedish sim card and operator.

No.
For Sweden I think it will be I9100XXLQ6.
If you got the phone from a totally unknown person, i would suggest to revert it back to complete stock, and then start making all the changes you want from scratch, just to be 100% safe.
I agree i´ll flash everything back to stock and start from the begining, I think it´s the best way. But 19100XXLQ6 is the modem that my phone says I have, does that mean that I´am on stock baseband?`Otherwise if someone could show me a link or something for a step to step guide of how to restore everything back to stock.
Thanks a lot for your help guys !
Look backup your efs folder before you start pissi g about with stuff.
Then go to that link and get a 4.0.3 stock firmware for your region.
Then come back here and you can be advised about like siyah kernel/nand backups/roms.
Hi all,
So i have been having some problems with my s2 recently which I hope you can help me with. Phone was working fine a few months ago, then the micro usb socket failed on me. No worries, new board goes in all is well. Then a couple of weeks ago same problems again, again no worries ill put a new board in i thought!
Please with another sucessful fix I also decided to finally test out ICS so jumped on the latest nightly cyanogenmod. Anyway, since these things I am now finding my phone will just stop getting any signal. IT usually eventually comes back after many resets and battery pull outs, and when it works it works well (3g access no problems). Today it has done the same thing and now won't seem to come back, even the IMEI number is missing this time when i type *#06#....
Does anyone know if this is likely hardware or software?
Thanks all,
Ian
Not even generic imei? You dont happen to have a EFS backup?
Have you tried flashing back te original firmware you had before the problem?
Have you tried changing the modem? since it is the one that adresses the signal problem.
And if you're thinking of flashing original ICS firmware do be carefull. Mind the Brickbug.
I face the same problem, but i at least get generic imei and signal.
Please excuse the bad english.
no imei when type *#06#
No backup.
I had this problem last weekend but the imei came back just from lots of resetting. Question is is this hardware or software?

Well, if you had a backup and restored and it would have worked it we could have ruled out the hardware.
Otherwise it surpasses me. I would have an experienced forum member answer your question. I am sorry i was of no help.

Without a backup you're not fixing it. Service centre if you want it done properly, or ask local mobile repair shops (which can be very 'hit & miss').
It's unlikely to be a hardware issue if the IMEI has disappeared. It's a firmware/software problem that's caused it; exactly what however, would be conjecture on anyone's part (and irrelevant anyway; knowing what caused it isn't going to help you fix it, trust me).
Edit - Given you've only got a few mths till you get a new phone & given the probable cost of repairs, I'd be bringing forward my new phone purchase.

When I used to run GB Miui (>12 mths ago, shortly after I got my phone), the IMEI would occasionally disappear immediately after boot for anything up to 30 seconds.
Why did it happen ? I'm no developer (I'm not even sure the developers of that particular rom knew), but it always showed up or after another reboot.
Essentially, if the IMEI doesn't come back after rebooting a couple of times, you're cactus.
Maybe do a clean install of stock & a reset (stay away from 4.0.4 stock). I wouldn't get my hopes up tho. First thing you do when you run non-stock firmware/root your phone is backup EFS. Always.

I've recently purchased a SII I1900P with NFC and need to unlock it, but to do that it would seem that it needs to be rooted, which I will eventually need to do anyway.
I've done quite a bit of reading and googling, and it seems there are now many versions of the SII just to complicate things.
I've found this guide here, which I think will do the job, but the link for CWM has been removed, do I just need to download a version from clockworkmod. I tried to post in that thread but was not allowed to.
They don't seem to list a I1900P, I've also found this guide, but again need to download a version of CWM.
I've flashed phones before, but not often so tend to forget. The major problem I'm having is that there is so much information, it's information overload, so would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction to the correct files please.

Well, lets see:
Mobile Odin:
Flashes with it's own kernel (Gingerbread based, brick bug free).
Flashes any stock ROM by itself, this means that you only need to select the files and hit start. MO sorts it all out on its own.
Checks the signatures, in case a file it's damaged or not compatible.
Checks you battery level so it doesn't run outta juice while it flashes it (won't flash unless you got at least 50%).
It's fast, 3-4 min per flash.
Wipes dalvik and cache (optional) regardless of CWM previously installed or not.
It's safe, because if things got south, you still got Odin in your PC to get out of the jam.
You can flash a stock kernel, modem but i'm not sure if it flashes custom kernels as well, customs kernels also install CWM as default recovery.
Mobile Odin Pro:
All the above +
Injects Root while flashing the new ROM.
Injects SU app.
Injects MO app.
(all above are optional).
CWM:
You can flash the zip file via stock recovery, it'll be wiped on a new flash of course, because the new kernel comes along with the ROM, so there's that.
Odin (PC): if things go south, you only got Odin to get you outta the jam
Now, for the permissions thing you need a Root explorer.
Why not try kTool, maybe you can modify that file from that app.
As impatient as I am I used Windows Odin, I've now got Android 4.1.2 installed, but of course have lost the root, and ExynosAbuse no longer works.
Is it me or has ExynosAbuse disappeared from the playstore tonight?

ExynosAbuse was at the store? Thought it was only here, at xda.
And yeah, it doesn't work on JB because samsung patched the exploit.
Don't worry, flash philz or siyah v6 via odin and that'll get you Root + CWM.
Thanks, once again, I thought the QR code took me to the store for ExynosAbuse, but perhaps not - things tend to merge into one.
I flashed philz, and then Method 1 as listed in the philz thread to root.
So I'm all rooted again, and running JB, except it's got lot's junk from TIM Italy. I'll have to have a look around and see if there are any better JB roms, would like to keep support for Kies Air.
Edit: Actually I've installed ROM Toolbox Pro and that's allowed me to uninstall all the Italian Apps.
Still, you are running a branded jb ROM.

Still, you are running a branded jb ROM.
Here's a list:

Gastonw, you've been very helpful, and have made getting my phone rooted, and updated so much easier, thanks for all your help and suggestions. :good: Hopefully this thread will prove useful to others as well.
I've decided to stay with the JB ROM I've got, I can't see any branding left on it now, I've changed the boot up and shut down animations, and removed all the TIM apps.
I will probably remove the Samsung ones that I don't need either - found a great list here of what apps can be removed and which ones shouldn't.
Awesome, it's nice to hear you came thru.
Have fun with jb and all.
