Hi
Hopefully someone can help, as I am pulling my hair out :crying:
I have installed JB ROMS four times and updated Kernal to Phil however I still keep getting the same problems with my storage, not enough space etc for every ROM installed. I have updated the Kernal and performed factory reset, full wipe, format system, wipe cache, dalvik etc through recovery. However the phone still has the same user data each time, its like its not being deleted every time I install a new ROM. At the moment I can not sync gallery due to not enough space, download off line reading for the BBC, Guardian and the Current keeps crashing and other app thay requires data downloand.
The storage does not change no matter what and I can still see the same data files from the first install.
Is there an additional step I need to perform to completing wipe the phone internal ?
TIA

Have you tried to mount the partitions you want to wipe in CWM recovery before wiping?
Maybe that's the trick.
Just a guess.
Im on stock JB rom with philz kernel. Woke up today and got a notification saying my storage in full. The 2GB storage for apps only. I have not gone to play store to install stuff for some time alrdy and i am on this rom for 1mth alrdy. Cleared dalvik and cache partition as well. Havent try tried a format

I have a quick question regarding TWRP. I have installed a rom that i'd like to not use anymore. However, when I restore, all the system files are still there (I know this because they still pop up as a deodexed version.)
Anyways, I was wondering if it is ok to do this in TWRP
-Wipe cache/factory reset
-Wipe system data <--- that is what 'm really wondering
-Restore from my backup that I made that has the proper system files I want.
Im looking at it right now and factory reset says wipe data and cache, so I am guessing that option kills two of the 3 standard steps apart from wiping dalvik. Now the wipe system, Im not sure; but for wiping the normal 3- do factory reset, cache, and dalvik cache
All wiping or formatting /system does is wipe your current rom. I always do it before flashing or restoring anything just to be totally sure no lingering remnants of my previous rom remain and I've never had any issues doing so.

Wiping system before flashing a ROM is likely pointless, unless the ROM has a poor updater script that doesn't format system in the flash process. If it didn't format, the install would end with an error. If it was just deleting recursively and came upon a file it couldn't delete, it'd still end with an error. Formatting it before flashing isn't going to wipe anything out that wasn't already getting deleted as part of the updater-script formatting/deleting.
Also, if you perform a factory reset in recovery, you don't then have to go and wipe cache and dalvik cache as well. Factory reset already formats all three of those. Wiping cache also clears out the dalvik cache, since that is where the dalvik cache resides. Wiping 3 times is also a waste of time, as again, do you expect things to be left behind when it is formatted?
Do people frequently experience files being left over on flash drives and other removable storage devices when they format them that this whole "lets format it 3 times to make sure it's gone" craze started? Every time I've ever formatted something, as long as the process completed successfully, all the files were gone. The same goes for deleting a bunch of folders. As long as there wasn't an error, all those files disappeared too.
Hello everyone,
I have been having major issues with my phone as of late and havent had the time to address them. Until I absolutely had to today.
Recently my phone has been intermittently force closing every open app (including sys apps) until a reboot stops the process.
Today my phone rebooted into a boot-loop and I have been trying to gain access to photos on my internal memory for most of the day.
I have access to CWM and download mode.
I have tried mounting the usb in CWM to no avail. "unable to open ums lunfile" error.
I have tried reflashing the current ROM I am using (AOKP)
I have tried accessing the files and transfering them to my microSD using Aroma file manager but it can't seem to access my internal storage.
Can anyone suggest a way to access the photos on my internal storage so I can back them up to either my computer or my microSD?
After that I am fine wiping it and starting all over.
Thanks!
When you do a full wipe, basically Wipe data/Factory Reset, Wipe Cache and Wipe Dalvik cache, only the rom will be deleted. Your internal (and external) memory won't be touched, so you won't loose your photo's, music or anything like that. Just flash a new rom after the wipe.
However, if you haven't backed up anything with Titanium Backup, you will loose your apps, but I think your files are more important than apps are

Thank you for the quick advice! I ended up trusting it and wiping from recovery. Photos stayed intact and I backed them up and proceeded to wipe.

Hello!
For some reason I am having some major trouble when I'm trying to install UltimaAOSP v1.1.1 [Valhalla] on my i9300. I have been running UltimaRom v15 for a long time now, but it has been acting up lately (the photo sphere function in the camera crashes every time it's launched and the "system UI" crashes when i try to enable the GPS), so I decided to try out UltimaAOSP.
I have followed the install instructions exactly, wipe data/factory reset and unmount cache. I have tried with and without installing GApps.
PROBLEM: When i restart the phone I can barely get past the sim password screen before stuff starts crashing (contextprovider, phone and one more that i can't remember), and It just keeps crashing over and over so I can't really do anything. When It's left alone for 30 seconds or so it restarts the phone and everything starts crashing again.
"Extra" stuff i have tried:
- Wiping cache partition
- Clearing dalvik cache
- Moving the .zip-file to the internal sd card and external sd card
- Installing V1.1, got exactly the same error(s)
I am currently using CWM 6.0.4.6
Please help? This Is driving me nuts!

Try a full wipe format in mounts and storage format the following: format/system, format/cache, format /preload, format /data, warning this will leave you without any rom so make sure you have one ready to flash on your Ext SD.
Because you are not fully wiping it is leaving files behind which interferer with your new installation (short explanation)
Also I would recommend Philz recovery which does all this for you (it as a option to wipe to install a new rom) :good:

That fixed it, thank you!
I generally just wipe the data, cache and dalvik then flash the ROM. I have seen in a few threads to also wipe internal and SD. My question is what is getting wiped if I did do internal and SD. I've never done this before and wanted to ask before I did something I might regret later lol. Thanks.

Anything you keep on your internal SD card...like pictures/music/documents. I would recommend not doing this at all. If you keep a ROM or other flashable zips in these locations and wipe them before you flash them, they'll disappear. It is kind of like formatting.

wiping internal clears out everything. meaning you wont be able to reboot into the OS from recovery unless you have a rom on your external SDS to flash before rebooting. I would recommend it unless you know what you are doing and want to start fresh.

Wiping internal is wiping the internal sd card . . . so as the first person said, you'd lose all the pictures/movies/etc. one may have in their sd card...

i wipe internal storage on every clean flash. if you get in the habit of using auto backup apps like g+ for pics, and move anything useful from downloads to the sd card as you get it, its really no haste to wipe it. i also have titanium do full backups every night while im sleeping, for system and app data.
im sure some people wil say they havent wiped it in 10 years and never have an issue. i can tell you, i dont have a fraction of the random issues most people have that arent known bugs.

i have never tried it, but im pretty sure thats not accurate.
wiping internal storage should be nothing more than an advanced data wipe. instead of only deleting user data, you are deleting system data too. but you arent wiping any system files, so the system data should rebuild on boot.

you probably are correct. I only replied because I recent had an experience with it. I passed my G2 on to a friend. I offered to load up what ever ROM he wanted and he chose CM12. I got it all loaded up and working fine. Then I decided to go back into recovery to erase any data I had on the device. I selected Internal Storage in TWRP, rebooted and it wouldn't go beyond the lg screen.
If I am correct, you would never notice it since you wipe then flash.

weird, maybe you are right. ill try it next time i clean flash and see what happens.
none of the rom code should be stored there, so it should rebuild.
if you accidentally wiped system, it defiantly wouldnt boot then.
I NEVER wipe Internal or External sd. I wipe cache, data & dalvik from time to time. I'll wipe system as well if I'm flashing a new rom. I tend to keep all of my media and app backups on my External sd just in case something ever happens. For example, if you have to revert back to stock, your Internal sd is completely wiped.
The problem is, its not one or specific app that crash, its almost all.. the error massage overlapping the other error massage! its almost impossible for me to navigate through my phone. Each time I click "OK", other errors pop up.. usually its not happen to the apps I install, the error happen on android service app.. like phone, contact, calendar, google service, etc.. etc.. the only solution I did is to wipe everything (since I root it). I have to wipe everything for it to work.. if I wipe internal only, and install other custom rom.. its not working.. I have to wipe everything.
my question is how to fix this "Unfortunately, (apps) has stopped..." error without wiping everything???
If you are using custom ROM then download exactly the SAME version of the ROM you currently have and reflash it without doing factory reset (make sure you wipe out dalvik and regular cache after flashing). Also this sounds like corrupt internal storage, best solution involves losing ALL of your data (yes, even ROM). I suggest you to do hard reset (completely format /system partition). After doing that be aware that no OS will be installed on your phone and you should flash one using recovery like you do with regular ROM installation (with cache cleaning and Gapps flashing). Your phone will work like charm again. Make sure your backup all your important stuff before doing it. Also if you use SD card I would recommend formatting it as well because it contains (probably) broken application data and obbs.
Or, try reinstalling the google services app.. If that fails reflash the rom twice via recovery. If that fails, as above, backup, reset to stock and start over.

Thanks for the reply.. :good::good: When you say "corrupt internal storage".. do you mean hardware? so, in the future it might happen again? what trigger this error? its happen so sudden.. haha.. sorry for a lot of question.. this error happen to me twice.. on difference phone! one Samsung S3.. the other one Asus Zenfone 5 LTE.. luckly for S3, I manage to restore it, but for asus..... well.... Damn you asus!!

By Corrupt Internal Storage I mean software way, it gets formatted to RAW instead of exFAT or NTFS or whatever format it is by default. This was happening quite a lot with my SD card, Android system was reading/writing something on it in the background, I was playing some game and suddendly phone restarted because of Low memory killer. And what happened is that SD card operation suddendly stopped which most probably made it virtually corrupt (formatted from NTFS to RAW) and made it unable to read on phone and PC. Only solution was to format is using Windows' Disk Managment tool and format it freshly. Same thing rarely happens to internal storage which means your ROM won't boot and your phone will be booted into recovery or you will get bootloop. That being said maybe some of your segments from OS are virtually damaged which prevents apps from functioning properly making them crash. Another reason could be "optimizing" apps such as Greenify, Battery Boosters etc which can crash other apps as well.
