Network keeps switching - HTC Amaze 4G

So I just flashed to a new rom, and I'm noticing to see a lot of 3g and 2g symbols . Is that normal? I mean I've gotten the 2g symbol before on my old rom but never the 3g symbol. I didn't even know this phone had 3g.
And this is a problem because when I'm playing online games like "Fun run" , it would work for half of the game and then I get disconnected .
Any fix ?

its not network switching really.. you aren't in a area with a good reception.. and what service are you running.. and the amaze is a 4g phone.. so it's kinda sad seeing someone getting edge or 2g
---------- Post added at 12:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:25 AM ----------
id say use wifi if you plan on playing online games indoors if you dont have good signal...

What is the best bandwidth monitoring app?

I am looking for something to help me monitor my bandwidth usage and tell me whats using my bandwidth. I would prefer something that will also let me know the connection type. I just got my note and my billing cycle started on the 24th and according to the My At&t app I have already used 930 MB. I have the same usage patterns like when I was on Sprint and I never even hit 2GB TIA

Try onavo, I just started using it but is pretty good at keeping an eye of data hogs, it will alert you if something is using your data.
Sent from my awesome Galaxy Note!
thanks. I'll try onavo. For now I had to upgrade to the 5GB plan to be safe
I'm not sure what the deal is but when I upgraded from the inspire 4g to the skyrocket lte my data usage quadrupled didn't feel like I did a whole lot more but I went from being a 2 gb a month to 8 to 10 user. I mean I still stream netflix about the same and use the phone the same just way more data Usage

I'll second Onovo. I had ZDBox at first but it kept showing 0 usage, which I knew wasn't right. My only complaint is that it's persistent in the notification area, which is a pet peeve of mine, but at least on the Note it doesn't take up much space
Once you tell it to 'ignore' certain data hogs that you're okay with (e.g. Pandora), it's nice to see what apps are using more data than you expected. There's also a setting to confine apps to Wi-Fi only, but I'm not sure if it's actually working.

I am using Onovo, but couldn't get it to restrict apps to Wi-Fi only, so I don't feel that it is working properly. I haven't reported it to them yet, since I have more important things to do, but I am getting to the point that I will need to have this working soon.
I am on 4G HSPA+ (No LTE), so I don't know if Onovo can't block apps from using that, or what. I did read somewhere that utilities like Onovo *may* only work with 3G for blocking app access. Well, that would be useless. Anyone else confirm?
Thanks!

[Q] which wifi tether app to use

I have tried searching and trying several of the offerings. The one I liked that worked real well on my SG Tablet 7" was this one Android Wifi Tether
The problem with this one is when I turn off the tether, and go back to wifi, I have to power reset to get the wifi to work again.
I know, I tried switching wifi off/on in the manager, but no luck.
So who has found a functional wifi tether. My gNote is rooted.
Really.?

What's wrong with the built in tether app that you enable/disable from settings > wireless & network > tethering & portable hotspot ? That one seems to work great for me.

Do you know if that is undetectable if you have the tethering manager froze? Maybe it is I never thought to try it.

That sux. Here in Canada they have been allowing tethering without paying extra.
Of course that could change :/

Not sure if it is, but will let you know. I just rooted mine last night and deleted the tetheringmanager.apk. I used the WiFi Hotspot this morning to connect my laptop for about 30 minutes. Have not received any "Cease and Desist" notifications as of yet.
So has AT&T caught anyone yet? I carry an iPhone 4 and sometimes a TouchPad with me so I would like to be able to tether without paying extra. I have a grandfathered "unlimited" plan and I don't see why AT&T can't allow me to tether if I never go over their "unlimited" 3GB cap...
You won't get caught unless you are using ridiculous amounts of data. Its crazy how they even try to charge you $50 a month for a 5GB data plan and "THE ABILITY" to tether off your "OWN" data plan lol. The guy offered me that plan when i got my Note. I chuckled and said common man are you serious? It looked confused. AT&T for ya lol.

I am on the grandfathered unlimited plan. I was told it was 5gb before any throttling of speeds. I was extensively tethering on my LG eXpo and never contacted or 'offered' to switch to a new plan. Did a couple of times with my Thrill and same result. Still nothing from yesterday's wifi hotspot trial. Have already ate up 1gb since acquiring this phone on SAturday. (lot of speed tests and loading of apps) so going tk take it easy and use wifi for a while. Max i ever used was 2.5 gb with the eXpo, so that is probably why i was never 'caught'.
Sent from a Galaxy far, far away!
I used to tether my iPhone 4 a lot but haven't done it in over 6 months so I didn't know if they were any better at detecting tethering since all of those "5%" of users have been getting throttling messages.

Probably not. I wouldnt be surprised if they open up the flood gates to tethering now that they have effectively killed unlimited data. If I were AT&T I would encourage tethering to rack up more fees! (Perhaps they just want to make up for it up front, who knows!)
I do moderate tethering and dont have any nastygrams in my inbox yet.

Try PDANet
PDANet works great USB from stock ATT Note to laptop. Laptop does not have bluetooth. Must have PDANet on both laptop and Note. Totally free.
Sent from laptop via 4G data from ATT stock Note.
Yes, ATT can detect tethering very easily. Do they care with the new throttling policy in place? I don't think so. ATT policy is "If you are in the top 5% of data users in your coverage area, your data speed will be throttled."
I fought the good fight with ATT (5 telephone calls) to keep my unlimited data plan so I could continue receiving data for free (abeit at a slower speed) if I ever went into the "top 5%".
I tethered my jail-broken iphone for past 2 years. Tethered data to laptop only when in my RV. Never went over 1 gb data used in billing period. Never got nasty email.
Of course, with huge screen of Note (unlike iphone) I probably won't feel the need to tether to laptop too much anymore.
---------- Post added at 11:11 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:46 AM ----------
Just tried FoxFi after posting about USB PdaNet. Works great as a WiFi hot spot.
Sent by ATT 4g data from laptop using WiFi hot spot created by FoxFi on stock note.
I'm a bad ass over here
I use about 3GB - 4.5GB per month on unlimited data plan. The only texts I've gotten from AT&T was the "Top 5% of users" text. Other than that, nothing on the tethering.
I have a rooted phone with the tetheringmanager.apk uninstalled. Does anyone know if there is a way to add a shortcut to the menu item 'Settings>Wireless and Network>Tethering and portable hotspot'?
It is a slight, but noticeable pain to have to navigate there every time I feel like hopping on my laptop to watch netflix.
Foxfi is recommended... Don't need to be rooted either.... Works great....

If your willing to spend the money I believe verizon sells signal extenders. I don't know how much they are, how they work or if they extend 4G but it is an option.
You could also just use wifi like everyone else does when they're at home...

When on Wifi, it will work for texting too? (sorry, while I'm pretty educated in rooting and crap I'm not so much on the basics lol)

They extend 3G and voice only, not 4G. They also require you to have an existing broadband connection, because they connect to the Verizon network through the internet. They're basically like having your own micro-cell in your home.

If your signal is bad then the only choice you have is basically the network extender or using VOIP apps like gvoice.

Actually it says you can use any ISP as long as there is a 1mbps connection available but I assume that you might not get 3g extended? Idk though so don't listen to me.
Yeah, it isn't just the 4G it's signal period, I get 5 bars outside and it gets super random inside. Sometimes it drops, sometimes it's 1x then 3G then 4G...it's so random but super unreliable.

The network extenders cost $250 and work up to 100 feet, I get 4 bars(only during a call,0 bars if I'm not using it) all over my property where I used to get no signal. You do need a broadband internet connection and be able to get a gps signal indoors for them to work. The unit I bought in 2009 didn't have 3g data capabilites but Verizon at one time did sell them with 3g. Which in my opinion is useless as you need an internet connecdtion anyways for it to work so why not just use your wifi for data on the phone whcih is what I do. Yes its not 4g but its better than nothing at all which is what I had. And for me it's not just Verizon but Sprint and T-Mo too, It seems my house is a dead zone in my city for cell coverage.
I live in a fringe area for reception in my house so about 2 years ago I bought the Verizon extender ($100 at that time) and it got me from 1 bar to 3 bars. You do have to hook it up to your router and place a GPS locator in a nearby window for the unit to work. Whenever you connect to it, your phone will beep letting you know you are using the extender. Also, if you start a call in the house and then leave, at some distance from your house, like 200 feet, it will drop the call when it gets out of the extender's range.
But just two weeks ago I purchased a new NetGear router with extended range so I could get better WiFi reception throughout my house, and now the reception on my phone is at 5 bars and my reception is great--not a clue why. However, as pointed out, it doesn't seem to have any effect on 3G or 4G reception. I always use WiFi when I'm at home.
I have heard of people calling verizon to complain about the lack of service and Verizon basically giving them the extender. Might want to pursue that route in case it'll save you the 250.00

Yeah I read the same thing in the Inc thread a couple years ago and called and the rep said sorry we don't give them away for free, I couldn't even get a discount out of her. Since I already had one I decided not to keep calling back till I got a response I liked.

[Q] What are the APN settings for T-mobile HTC One to Dev Edition?

I want to increase my data speeds because I believe that ever since I converted my T-Mobile htc one to a dev edition through s-off, my data speeds have been slower. I noticed that it constantly switches between 3g and the H symbol now...
are there certain apn settings that I need to plug in ?
thanks in advance
Did you ever get this resolved? I'm in the same boat...
I initially had that problem after converting mine too, but flashing the T-Mobile radio fixed it completely with no need to edit the APN. Just flash the radio attached in the link below.

It still seems to be bouncing around between 3G and H a lot - something my Nexus S in the same location would not do, and it occasionally has a strong signal without a data connection whatsoever, which also did not occur with my Nexus S. There must be something else going on.

no 4g anymore

Anyone happen to see their 4g go away from their phone?
On 18.1 - just redownloaded it with all the default settings, only get 3g - looked at verizon's maps and i have 4g in my area, south east metro of the twin cities.
i had 4g lte before, but its not coming back..
thinking about downgrading to stock.

You might have a bad setting or radio. Download the app advanced signal status from play store & make sure you have proper bands selected. Which should be LTE,GSM,CDMA (auto PRL) under device settingss.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
Go to Settings/Mobile Network. Make sure you are on "LTE/CDMA/evdo". Download LTE Discovery from the Play Store. Go to the left page in the app and hit restart cell radio. If there's an LTE signal around you, that app will catch it.
If you're still not getting signal and you're sure you're in an LTE area, we can start exploring modems, EFS, etc.

Tried both of them, the advanced signal one lets me select LTE and 4g does come on then, but then when i select auto, it goes back to 3g.
the lte discovery was able to reset it, but doesn't really do anything, still says 3g or hspre.
gonna try to download hyperdrive again and see what that does.

Try a friends verizon sim first to see if that's your problem
Chatted with a Verizon tech and they tried their troubleshooting steps, looking for the apn, refreshing the sim on their end, it didn't work when i was chatting with them, so they are sending me a new sim, but maybe an hour later it refreshed and there was 4g again.
This might help some people that are having this problem.
I keep losing 4g, gonna try stock for a few days and see what it does.
