Long story short my audio jack is messed up. It won't keep a consistent connection if I move around my phone even just a little bit. Happens with all 3.5mm jacks on headphones and aux cables.
My question is, has anyone actually opened up an amaze and seen how hard it was to get to the headphone jack? If I'm able to find a replacement one how strenuous would it be replacing it?
Audio jacks are fairly basic in construction.. I'd hazard the guess a resolder will fix your issue... Unless...
Sometimes internally something can break etc...
A good phone shop could do this in their sleep... The problem is the actual jack is probably NOT generic.
Smt soldering can be e hazardous to your mental health.. (pain in the a$$)
Multi layered boards like we have are not for the feint of heart
Take it to a shop and pay them the $50 (wild guess)

Thanks for the tip. I got this amaze used from Gazelle and the headphone jack hasn't worked period. I was taking a flashlight to it today and noticed there was 3 or 4 big chunks of lint in the jack that were almost impossible to get out. There's no way this was accidental from being in the pocket, it was literally PACKED in there. After fiddling with a thumbtack I got it all out and now it maintains a connection. If I move around the cord a bit it will connect and reconnect frequently, but infrequent moving doesn't cause any problems. This will work for now. :good:
This seems to be a very common thing in our amaze. My ex-amaze had it too. Don't like that. Maybe you can dissemble it and clean with rubbing alcohol

The sound has stopped working on my wallaby, and I wonder if anyone can help me fix it. I have cleaned the headphone jack with a toothbrush and IPA solvent and this has made no difference. I have also checked the resistance across the contacts with a multimeter and measured zero ohms across pins 2-3 and 4-5 after cleaning.
However, I have found that the sound does work if the device is really cold. For example - if I put the wallaby in the fridge, the sound will work for a few minutes until it warms up again.
Can anyone sugest what might be the problem?

I have also tried the playback test from the bootloader meny and this works fine.
any luck with "no sound" so far? i am having same problem with jasjar. tried to screw around with headphone jack socket like threads state but no luck. thought maybe you might have some advice on how yours is going?

No progress whatsoever. It's almost impossible to fault find without a circuit diagram / schematic. I can't get my head around why it works fine from the diagnostics menu, but not at all once I boot it up into Windows (unless I put it in the fridge).

Perhaps the failing componant is near another that emits a lot of heat when the phone is booted, but doesn't startup in diagnostic mode? Charging circuit overheating / shorting maybe? Or maybe the resistance of something in the speaker circuit is changing as it warms?
Any access to a thermal camera / image software?

just got my jasjar back after having cracked lcd and headphone jack replaced. sent to http://www.pocketpctechs.com out of california as suggested by very helpful user on this site. cost me around $20 dollars and took only a day to fix. works fine now!

The other day while listening to music on my note the sound from the right ear phone went dead. If I played the with cord or bent the jack and held it that way I could hear music again from both ears. So naturally I thought I just needed new ear phones. However my ear phones work fine for every other device and even a different pair of ear phones in my phone gave me the same problem. If I listen to music without ear phones the speakers work fine. Is my phone damaged or is there a way to fix this?
Your headphone jack might be malfunctioning. Try a different pair of headphones on the device.

I would say malfunctioning headphone jack since you had the same issue with more than one pair. do you have a case on it? The case could be blocking it from fully entering and making a good connection

Also if you keep your phone in your pocket, it could be lint in the port. That happened to me on my streak

A good tip for cleaning electronic connections is a qtip and rubbing alcohol. So long as your device is without power. I would even remove the battery. Try cleaning out the phono plug with some rubbing alcohol first.

And a can of air can help blow out the lint and dry the alcohol.
I took it out of its case and still the same problem. I did blow in it and there isn't a problem if the jack is in the right position. If I still have sound problems I just turn the jack until I hear sounds from both ear phones again and it seems to stay that way. I don't have any pressurized air or rubbing alcohol and if I can even get them here I will have to go into the city so lets save that for last. Considering that my ear phones are working fine if the jack is in the right spot, does that mean there could just be more dust deeper in there or some sort of problem with the phone?
If there's a sweet spot where it works fine, then there's corrosion in there. Possibly the alcohol and q-tip will remove gunk, but you need some mild abrasion like a pipe cleaner.
Could be dirt or it could mean loose solder joints.
Ok so the problem got a little worse, Even if I twist the jack a certain way just moving the wires to much or the phone it will cause the sound to go out. So if I am walking or even have the phone in my sweatshirt pocket the sound will go out. The only way to get sound to play clear from both ears while walking is the kind of bend the top of the ear phone jack and hold it. If I have the phone on my desk and twist the jack to a spot that works and just leave the phone there I do not have any problems. I will see if my host family or anyone in the village has alcohol or pressurized air but if that does not fix the problem then is something like this worth getting fixed or should I just buy a new phone?
Yeah, that means the soldering has been worked loose. The part is $20 or less on ebay, and there is a disassembly video in the general section. Its not a complicated process to replace the headphone port.
I think you may be right. Today I noticed that if I press down really hard on the jack music plays fine in both ears and twisting and turning the jack doesn't affect it at all. Does that pretty much prove it then?
Yes, its getting worked loose. I've seen someone duct tape the headphone plug to the phone in the sweet spot. It lasted for about a week until the last connection broke.
Ok, I am not in the US so now ebay is out of the question. I will go into the city and see if I can find the part but as someone who never never taken a phone apart and fixed one would watching the video be good enough for me?
You can learn from the video. But if you have a store that sells the part, why not have them do the repair? I can't imagine it would cost more than $50 US.
Whenever I connect my phone to my car stereo via AUX, I'll have to unplug/re-plug the cable multiple times for it to register. Basically, it'll continue to play through the phone speaker(s) instead of coming through the stereo. I've tried multiple music players & even tested the cable itself on my old Rezound & iPod and it's working fine with them(it's not the cable).
Is there some setting to fix this?
May sound stupid, but do you have a case that may be keeping the plug from going all the way in.

and no, it's a soft case with enough room around the jack. the cable plugs in securely.
When mine is connected with no case I get a constant fuzzy static noise unless I hold the side where the red grill is then it goes away
What Rom are you running? Is it stock unrooted or a custom Rom, if rooted what kernel are you running?

I should have mentioned... just got the phone a few days ago. It's still stock everything(haven't bothered unlocking/rooting/etc yet)
I had this same issue two months back. I did two things, i don't remember which did it.
Take a cotton swab and put a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol on it. Stick it in the aux port. Don't overuse the alcohol. Next, blow into the aux port. I had a small hair inside the port, causing the headphone jack/aux to not register.
I tried flashing several roms before i found out the simple issue lol. Let me know if this helps, my friend.

I think this is it. My phone did it yesterday and today. Both times I unplugged it, blew in the aux hole and on the stereo cable, and then it worked. Probably small piece of hair or dust in there.
This shouldn't be a problem with a new phone, but on previous phones/mp3 players I owned (ones that actually fit into a pocket) I ended up having to clean the inside of the aux plug with a paper clip (or any small thin object that wont break in there) from all the pocket lint that gathered in it.
well i tried cleaning the slot but it didn't help.
i have noticed that if i leave the screen on, plug in the cable & wait a few seconds, it registers.
any other way and it doesn't really work well/at all.

My headphone jack has been fine since I bought the phone on release day, well yesterday after a walk, I pulled the headphone plug from the jack and noticed my music was still playing but through the phone speaker... weird.
well in my friends car I wanted to use her aux input and it didn't register (aka show the headset icon in status bar), nor did it play through the car, only the phone speakers...
same thing when I tried in my car. Also tried again with the iBeats I used when it first happened... nothing.
I tried the cotton swab thing (most cotton swabs are too think though xD) and used compressed air to blow any hairs or specs out of it...
I can get headphones to register now, but I have to plug it in veerryy sloowwllyy ... :/
thing that sucks is I don't have a warranty... I mean maybe the stock HTC one but no verizon or 3rd party warranty
Hello i have a eonon car stereo running android 444 fuse rom i can only pick up 3 stations and they sometimes loose reception ive tried an amplifier and new eariel but with no luck any suggestions would be great.
I'd double check your harness connector to the oem antenna. Their was a pin loose on mine and once I bent the retention tabs back out and reinstalled the connection was much stronger.

Its a Renault Megane and is just a standard connector.
Im now beginning to think its the components on the motherboard as the closer i get to the sauce eg: im from Wigan were Wish FM is broadcast if i drive past the studio its crystal clear same with Key 103 in Manchester. I think the radio chip on these is crap.
I think you need a power injector, because the antenna is active and needs power to work correctly. Just put the power injector between the radio and the antenna and connect the blue cable with the AMP or ANT cable of the radio harness...

I've had the same issue and solved it fortunately.
My Unit is a Joying RK3188 and came with a defect dual input power injector.
Easy steps to identify: At the output of these injectors (called 'phantomspeisung' in german) you sould measue 12V DC. These 12VDC sent over the 2pol antenna cable are for the antenna built in amplifier.
1st: I replaced the power injector with a diversity injector. Google for "Diversity Adapter 204.086-0) www.rta-online.com
2nd: Additionally to my amplified roof antenna I bought a second amplified antenna at amazon

Both together I've a really good reception now.
The diversity adapater really makes it's job. I is a littel high in price but worth at all.
Try putting some electrical tape around the Motorola male antenna plug at the head unit. What you are trying to accomplish is to insulate the area where the head unit housing may be in close contact with the plug. Takes a few seconds to try.

...that's excatly what provided the very worst reception ever to me... So I looked around (tried a lot and spend some bucks on some useless amplifiers) and finally found the solution from my previous post. It works.

If putting insulating tape just around the plug where it would touch the housing (and not where the actual plug needs to mate up) gave you worse reception... you did something wrong.
I was under the impression that these units had issues with the software ( or hardware) or this is what I am told.
See here or am I mistaken?

Its possible you are mistaken. The OP in this thread didn't provide any hardware specific details. Instead we know only version of android.
My units have no problem with radio reception, but I can simulate a problem if the connector touching the housing and impacting reception.
Other issues are not connecting the power to a stock antenna from the head unit when you install it. Even if you don't have an antenna that goes up and down you can have an amplified antenna. If you don't power it you don't get good reception. it can be something that is missed with wiring up the harness.
Yes, you can also have hardware problems, but its easy to rule out the external issues first before calling the unit the problem.

When you quote "my units have no problem," what software and hardware do you have in each, which motherboard, radio chip, etc etc
I part of me would like to believe that insulation is a problem here, but guys on the Russian forums have replaced capacitors to improve reception.

I have Joying units. One of the 10.1" universal units with 3188 and a 7" universal unit with 3188. No idea about the specifics of the chips.
If you have a specific hardware unit that people are complaining about then you may have a problem with that unit from that manufacturer. That's realistic, but try the other tests first before performing surgery.
Problem is most likely a internal problem with the ground of the antenna input. This was the problem with my unit.

This is great. It really helps illustrate how people are interpret things differently.
You have put too much tape on the connector. You have essentially broken the connection by entirely covering the outer connector. It may not be been obvious to you that a motorola antenna connector needs contact on the pointy post and the outer shell.
What you wanted to do I carefully put just a little tape on the plug where is could touch the case of the unit in a circumstance where the alignment of the female connector inside the case attached to the PCB isn't perfectly centered for the case hole. When things are out of alignment there tends to be a connection between between case and the outer shell of the connector. When these things touch it can negatively impact reception.
Hehe... I made this photos this morning with an unused plug just to illustrate. I know that the connection is broken when insulated and also the it's impossible to work this way.
I also read several threads about that "put some tape on it" thing and heard dozens of interpretations.
A picture tells more than some thousand words.

So did you do it correctly when you tried it on your unit or are you saying this now to show the mistake and now you understand you need just a little bit of tape like mentioned up thread?

You might have a grounding issue if you are having to do that. I believe another member noticed that the outer part of the antenna socket is internally grounded with a little bit of solder and some foil, he had noticed that the foil had become disconnected meaning the outer part of the socket was no longer properly grounded, insulating the plug like you have done would help in that situation, but it isn't the correct fix, regrounding the socket is.

You may have read up thread.
1) Check the connections like power for the antenna if you have that
2) check the plug to see if its contacting the case. Tape as needed.
3) Open the case and validate the connection to the female socket on the PCB.
4) Check your MCU firmware
5) Try another unit
This whole tape thing has me so confused. The outer shell of the Motorola plug has to touch the casing for earthing doesn't it? Yet you are saying to tape up only the bits that are touching the casing.
Totally confused.
Can someone put up a picture of what is the right way to tape it please.

Hello, I'm having some connection issues with the Headphone jack on my Redmi note 4 Global Version (snap), I had the phone for over a year but from 2 weeks ago the phone couldn't recognize the headphone if it's completely in the jack, but it does recognize it nearly at the bottom with some issues (such as missing a channel), but there's a gold spot like 1mm above the bottom where the sound works as normal, but it's not reliable because any movement would take the plug out of that gold spot.
I figured a replacement should work fine and at first I tried to solve this locally, I went into like 5 tech support stores but none of them had a replacement jack, however one of them said that this issue could instead be the logic board, they asked me to let my phone overnight to see if its the board or the piece, and then tell me if the repair is possible. Because everything pointed towards a issue with the piece, as the phone did had a point where it could recognize the headphone connected, I said fine and let it, the next morning they bailed out and said they couldn't fix it because it was an issue with the board, them they spouted something about it being a common issue with a bunch of Xiaomi models having that exact same issue and telling there's no point in changing the jack as it would keep failing.
Honestly I don't believe it, the phone have a year without issues and to me the behaviour in the headphone tells a failure in keeping the connection at the end of the plug.
My idea right now is to buy a jack myself and either follow this tutorial or bring it to a store to change it for me, I'm not familiarized with smartphones and have no experience in soldering, so maybe bring it to a store is a better idea, however i still need to ask, is there a chance it could be the logic board or it definitely is the jack? I should buy that piece from Aliexpress or search another source? That tutorial seems legit enough?

I have two Redmi Note 4s with headphone jack issues.
The headphone jacks don't last as long as other phone manufacturers. Also there appears to be issues with the printed circuit on the motherboard from the headphone jack to the rest of the circuit.
Replacing the headphone jack and adding extra wire from the headphone jack connectors to the associated components should fix the problem. If it doesn't then meh, you've done all you can!
