I just restored a nandroid I had and all the apps I had moved to the sd were missing. Is there a way to correct this or do they have to be in the phone storage to be included in the backup? Of course I had everything in TiB, but that's not the same. When I do a nandroid I expect it be exactly the way I left it.
a nandroid backup usually includes the system, data, and boot images. user apps are usually installed on the data partition, but if you chose to move apps to your sd card via application settings then it would not be backed up.

If I recover with xRec, will I loose pix and other things on SD card?
I have some apps/games on the SD card but I'm more worried about pix and other data files
Short answer: no. However, some apps will remove their data/will refuse to read from sd (Like Tap Tap Revenge 4) when reinstalled, so remember to restore the app's data/data partition to ensure that they work properly.
How do I do that?
I had zedge and copied the folder to my computer and after formatting sdcard and re-installing everything, I put that folder back but it's not recognized. I guess zedge had a way to detect backups but now it doesn't.
As long as my pix/songs are safe, I'm ok to flash/restore I guess.

Try using titanium backup (backup root if you're rooted) to restore your app/data after restoring using xrec. Don't restore data using xrec. only use it to restore full rom backup.
i have backed up the apps i would like to with titanium back up..
most of my apps and their titanum backups are on my sd card..
i want to format my sd card but im worried about losing my pics, apps (possibly titanium itself) and maybe xrecovery..
pics and other files are easy to backup.. (simply to a computer)
but is there a quick and safe way to format sd card without losing xrecovery and app backups that i previously backed up with titanium?

Copy everything you need from the card.
A format will always wipe the card clean.
Xrecovery is stored in the phones NAND.. and not on the SD.
Backups made in Xrecovery are stored on the SD.
I want to wipe /sdcard and then to restore apps and data. So what I'll do:
1. Titanium Backup for all apps and data.
2. Wipe /sdcard.
3. Reinstall a fresh Titanium Backup.
But -- Titanium Backup is now fresh, so it doesn't have the apps and data backup I made earlier to restore from.
So the question is:
Does it suffice to copy the entire old Titanium Backup directory into the fresh (and empty) Titanium Backup directory?
Will the option 'restore missing apps with data' show all the stuff I backed up?
Mmm I did this when I moved to a custom JB rom. Like you said if you wipe sd card you will loose all the TB data. I'm not sure if you can move the TB folder to your pc then move it back after the wipe to restore your apps. I personally decided not to as I wanted to make sure I only had JB compatible apps on my phone as I was moving from an ICS rom. Perhaps other users have done this and can advise further.

I found the answer here
I've been using TiBu a lot to back up and restore my apps now that I'm flashing a lot more, but now with the smaller data partitions in the new JB roms I'm finding myself having to move a lot of apps to the sd card... which is fine. The problem is though TiBu always tries to restore everything to the data partition and will freeze when it runs out of space. Is there any way to get it to remember which apps are backed up on the sd card and restore them accordingly or no?
SOLVED
Go to TiBu's Preferences and scroll down to RESTORATION SETTINGS. Select 'Restore backups to...' and then change option to 'Original location (for TB 3.2.8+ backups)'.
Your apps will now restore to the sd card and you don't have to worry about moving them after a restore!
I've been reading some conflicting information about nandroid backups. Do they actually back up everything on your phone, minus the micro SD card, or do I need something like Titanium to supplement it?
I've read both, so I'm looking for some clarification on exactly what steps I need to take to make sure everything is safe.
They backup everything.
The sd card is not backed up ie-music,videos,etc but everything else is backed up. u can use pc to backup sd card.
CWM actually backups the whole rom; system, boot, data and cache folders so when you restore a nandroid backup your rom will be exactly as you backup it; the apps and there data and every thing else related to the rom will be restored.
As we know, a twrp nandroid does not backup user data. So to be safe, that needs to be backed up separately. Even Titanium Backup does not backup documents, DCIM folders, etc.
I am not an android expert but I guess that all the data that is not included in a nandroid backup probably lies in a separate partition on the phone. If I am correct, rather than backing up these individual folders is it possible, on a rooted phone, to simply backup that entire user partition to a usb device in one go that ensures everything can be restored?
How?
Thanks.

User data is stored in the /data/media partition.
When creating a nandroid backup, you can choose the option to include "internal storage", this will backup your user data. Restoring this backup will restore your user data along with your ROM.
Other methods are:
Connect your device to PC via USB, then open the devices storage on PC then highlight all the folders and files that you see there and copy them then paste them to a folder on your PC. This will save all of your user data, to restore the data, connect to PC and copy everything back over to your devices internal storage.
You can also use "adb backup" to back up and restore user data.
