[Q] TWRP/CWM Recovery keeps freezing when wiping cache? - AT&T LG Optimus G

For some reason, my recovery freezes every time when I'm doing something that involves wiping cache (doing a factory reset, or restoring a backup). This happens on both TWRP and CWM. Even weirder is the fact that I never had this problem before, it only started happening recently. Wondering if there is a corrupt file somewhere I should look at to troubleshoot??

I had that with twrp - my cache partition was corrupt.
Never had that with CWM Touch though, so I don't have any suggestions there.

Thanks for the reply. Now of course my next logical question would be -- What is the solution?

Mine was to switch from twrp to CWM Touch, which formatted mine fine when twrp wouldn't. Lol. Obviously that isn't going to work for you if cwm is failing too.

Mine is doing the same. My cache is shot too. I don't want to go back to bone stock

So the only way to fix this is to flash back to stock using LGNPST?

Yes. Pretty much. I don't know of any other way right now. Sucks for me as I don't use widows.

Open an adb shell and do the following, give it a few minutes to complete. It'll be done when it complains about being out of space.
Code:
su
busybox dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/cache

Which version of the recoveries ate you using? I'm using the newer version of cwm and have zero issues.

Everyone, I confirm that this fixed my problem. Just booted my phone into recovery, plugged it into my computer and ran the adb code given by Shelnutt.... Now I can wipe my cache again. So glad I didn't have to go through the trouble of reflashing to stock, THANKS!

I wonder if I can do this from the terminal on the phone itself

This keeps happening to me as well. It wasn't until recently when it started doing this. I was using FreeGee's version of CWM and it started doing this. Then I just switched to the touch version of CWM and it is still doing it. This just started happening yesterday if I recall correctly.
I have no idea how to run an adb shell or whatever Shellnutt said. Just googled it and they're giving me different ways. What's the easiest method for doing this?
EDIT: And I keep getting a "E:Can't open /cache/recover/log"for basically every command I do in CWM. The commands themselves still work (well, except clearing cache apparently) but all the others are working fine. So something is seriously wrong with my cache haha
---------- Post added at 04:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:46 PM ----------
okay so I downloaded Android Terminal Emulator and typed in exactly what shellnutt said in the other post. Just booted into recovery and it wiped cache! Not sure if it was just a coincidence or I did something right lol. Either way, I'm up and running!

Trying this from the "terminal command" from twrp. It repeats the line on the screen back to me, doesn't appear to be doing anything but i'll wait. Otherwise ill try adb when i get home. Thanks shellnut.

success!
I realize that this is an old thread, but I wanted to say that shellnut's instructions (post #10) worked for me on my htc one (m7) with CM11. I had to enable root for adb for it to work first, though (Settings > Developer options > Root access > choose "Apps and ADB").
Any cache-related operations in CWM (cache wipe, factory reset, or cache backup) would take many, many minutes to complete--to the point that I thought CWM recovery had crashed/frozen. After doing what shellnut suggested, the cache backup step when doing a nandroid backup is now instantaneous, and wiping the cache only takes about 45 seconds (I guess that's the minimum time it takes to format the cache partition on my device).
Don't be nervous if you see some cache mount errors when booting into CWM recovery first time after doing the dd command. Just go ahead and "wipe cache" and the cache mount errors in CWM go away on their own after that.

There are a couple apps that will take you into recovery. I'm assuming you are rooted so you could use the app called Quick Boot (its in the market ). Its pretty simple and gives you the options to power down, fast boot, boot into recovery etc.

app called reboot manager works great. just hit recovery and it will take you strate into recovery with nothing else to do.
if you install this app, it will install a quick setting by long pressing the serch button or you can put a widget on your screen with every power/reboot option

has no one had any issues with quick boot? the first time i used it, i used it to boot into recovery (amon ra) and wipe cache/dalvik and then flashed a kernal. well, it didn't work, and i ended up having to nandroid restore. couldve been the kernal, though i have used the same kernal/rom combo countless times with no issues. that being said, i really think quick boot did something to corrupt some data. any ideas or experience with this? The app just does the equivalent of you doing an "adb reboot recovery" or choosing recovery from hboot, or anything else.
Once you're booted up running on your recovery partition, the quick settings apk file on your phone /data directory on it's phone partition aren't responsible for anything that happens.
I can assure you the issue was elsewhere!

reboot just locks up at splash screen and clearing the cache and dalvik wont delete files correct? also the cache we talk about is the wipe cache partition?
Wiping /cache and /dalvik won't delete any data so no worries about that. Wipe them both and then reboot. It will take up to 3-5minutes to rebuild the caches.
I kind of need to know what ROM you are/were on to figure out where to go. Once you answer that and try the above, and it doesn't work I have another idea to try.

trying to reboot now but it looks like it isnt going to work. but i also read somewhere else
Only the factory recovery wipes the /data/media ("/sdcard") partition. Any third-party community-built recovery (like ClockworkMod Recovery or TeamWin Recovery Project) will wipe everything except /data/media.
So, to answer your question, as long as the files are on your phone's pretend SD card (the default for user-created content and files you transfer to your phone), they won't be wiped when installing a custom ROM.
is this true? also again could care less about the phone just need the new baby pics and vids
You are correct. The only ways to erase your internal SD card is by formatting it, masterclear in Odin, or formatting /data (not wiping but formatting -they are different functions).
Did the wipe and reboot work?

Error message help!

Hey guys, I continually get this error message upon manually forcing my phone into recovery. I'm on UCLF5 ICS OBJECTION from btw with the latest version of cwm. I would appreciate some help with regard to what exactly it means and how I can fix it.
Also my phone won't shut down properly. The lights on the bottom buttons stay on and I have to manually force it to reboot like I do to get it into recovery. The shortcuts in the rom aren't working for me.

I would put it into download mode and run odin or the Off ics to redo/repack your folders, then put CWM back on....idk
Just putting some ideas in, maybe the guru's will jump in on the thread...
Before nuking it like that... try going to mounts and storage and formatting cache
Although I'm not even sure that error is anything to worry about honestly...but i don't do nandroids personally so Idk for sure.
And Joe....stop quoting the op, please?
Does this error have anything to do with the CWM version being used? Its calling for the external sd card isn't it?
No it's calling on the /cache partition which is in the phone...
But it could be the cwm version, it's looking for a recovery log that it can't open.
I can't do anything with the cache. Its like it doesn't even recognize it. I noticed this when I went to throw another rom on and clear out my caches and it would just freeze. I left it for a half hour once just for the heck of it but it didn't do anything. I had to reboot the phone into recovery again.

What will "fix permissions" do?
I would downgrade cwm, I've been using brawway's touch version since he released his latest, without issue and i think that was in April or may
And fixing permissions, makes the permissions of all apps and .jars be what they should be.
Example: apps in /system/app need rw-r-r permissions, sometimes pasting some of those in will not set them correctly, and if you're doing a bunch at a time is a real pain to go through individually and change them, so that option makes sure everything everywhere matches the permissions needed. So, not applicable in this case.
Well I managed to get another rom on anyway so I don't think its big deal now. I think I might just leave my phone alone now
The collectives 4.04 aocp rom is pretty freaking sweet lol.

Yeah, That or there is also a .zip that can be flashed from your current version of cwm.
If doing it that way after it flashes go to advanced option and reboot recovery, then once in the new one, clear caches and see if that fixes the issue.
Or, just use Odin then boot into recovery and wipe, either way is up to you, but seeing as how it's cwm that's the issue, i might lean towards using Odin myself... Just note that will increase your flash counter iirc, if you care.

Has anyone else ran into the issue of the stock SMS notifications not going away? When I get a txt message, regardless of how many, it always says I have an unread message. Also, I can't find anything that says how to diable the scrolling wallpapers. I wanted static wallpapers for each home/menu screen.
Any advice is appreciated.

[Q] Constant Reboot, S-OFF, Rooted

So out of the blue my phone starts continuously rebooting. Typically right when it gets to the point where it's loading the unlock ring. Sometimes it will get passed that where I can navigate the phone but will always reboot with 5 minutes. Going on for about 2 days now.
I s-off'd rooted a month ago with no issue until now.
I've already tried reloading the RUU and performing a factory reset, locking/unlocking the boot loader. Re s-offing with no luck.
Any ideas besides attempting a return to sprint or htc?

Tried that...
I've done everything suggested above, but to no avail. I've tried restoring Nandroids and flashing the stock rooted ROM. None of them make it completely past the boot animation. I get about 3 sec. in, and it reboots. Any ideas? I'm truly stumped, and I REALLY don't want to go back to my back-up phone (I do love my Opti S, but still...). Can anyone help?
EDIT: I've flashed the most recent CM nightly (b/c I was on the milestone when the problems started) and that's where I get the farthest. I can get to the screen where the phone tries to turn on Wifi before it locks up and reboots. As a matter of fact, the problems started this morning when my phone wouldn't connect to Wifi or data. Could a bad wifi radio be the reason for the reboots?
Thanks!

I had rooted and flashed custom roms before (I'd been running a nightly of CyanogenMod for a long time, and it worked well), and I considered myself an expert. I updated loads of apps and stuff, and then realised I wanted a new font. I went into ROM manager and found the font I wanted, Ubuntu. It told me there was an update to ClockworkMod recovery so I wen ahead and updated it, checking the thing for Touch (I'd already bought it). That want ahead and it updated, throwing me back into the OS. I then went to get Ubuntu (I downloaded it within ROM manager), and didn't deem it necessary to create a backup, nor wipe anything. It processed it but returned an error, I though ok but never mind and I told it to reboot. Again that worked fine. I realised I was on a very old verson of CyanogenMod (probably ICS, it was around 201304). As I always do, I grabbed the latest version (again, in ROM manager), and elected to install it. I didn't wipe the delvik cache or whatever, and hit 'Reboot into recovery'. That was where the problem occurred. It wouldn't go any further than the 'Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1' boot screen (see attachment) into recovery. A similar thing happened before, but it just eventually went away after an hour or so. This has been running for a day, and there has been no progress. I've tried various key combos, like the normal way to get into recovery, but they won't work.
If I need I could find the instructions I followed, but it would be hard.
Is it completely broken? Can a save my data? Will I have to factory reset it? Will I keep my root/ClockworkMod? Will I keep my rom?
Thanks in advance to the person who can answer this
Do you have any ROM zips in your SD card? If you do, boot into recovery, full wipe and flash it. Piece of advice, don't use the recovery in ROM manager. Download pershoot's version of cwm instead in here. www.droidbasement.com

I have a few nandroid backups, if that counts? I do have a few ROM zips on my SD card too, though. Will a full wipe delete photos etc? I'm guessing it'll get rid of the apps, but that's no problem. But how would I get into recovery? I've already tried to get in with no success.

If you can find a way to get into recovery, then yes you can use your nandroid. You problem now is you can't get into recovery or download mode, right? Well can you try using adb? If you can then type adb reboot recovery in command prompt to reboot to recovery.
Oh yeah, full wipe won't delete photos etc unless you wipe your internal storage/SD card.

Oh, thanks. I've got ADB already installed (I used it in trying to root my HTC Hero). Have I said thanks? You're a life saver
Oh dear, it seems that it's not showing up as an ADB device. Are there any other ways to get into recovery?

I don't know. The hold down power button + volume down didn't work? You have to hold for at least 10 seconds.
Don't just say thanks...hit my thanks button.

Just tried that, when I selected recovery it just turned off
So you can get into download mode?
Download mode, yes. I've got it open now, in fact
Now that's easy. Your tab can't boot because it doesn't have any sort of recovery(don't ask me why I don't know ). Apparently ROM Manager wiped your recovery clean and didn't flash the new one. Just flash cwm or twrp via Odin and try to boot. If it still can't boot, then restore your nandroid. Ironically, the same thing happened to me yesterday when I tried to flash latest twrp using Mobile Odin.

I actually have no idea. I think I used a program similar to Odin that did the job. I remember booting into download more before. Oh yes, I flashed the disk image for the root and CWM using the default windows tool. Anyway, I've fixed it now. I couldn't find a .tar to do the job so I converted a random file to a .tar and flashed it that way, tricking it into thinking it had a recovery and therefore booting. In the OS I used ROM Manager to get CWM.
