So out of the blue my phone starts continuously rebooting. Typically right when it gets to the point where it's loading the unlock ring. Sometimes it will get passed that where I can navigate the phone but will always reboot with 5 minutes. Going on for about 2 days now.
I s-off'd rooted a month ago with no issue until now.
I've already tried reloading the RUU and performing a factory reset, locking/unlocking the boot loader. Re s-offing with no luck.
Any ideas besides attempting a return to sprint or htc?

Well that file would shed light on why it's rebooting. Since your soff have you tried re flashing a rom? Wiping everything before flashing.

I would go the the development thread download the stock rooted rom from the 3.16 update. Reboot into recovery wipe system, factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache. Install rom. Reboot
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Tried that...
I've done everything suggested above, but to no avail. I've tried restoring Nandroids and flashing the stock rooted ROM. None of them make it completely past the boot animation. I get about 3 sec. in, and it reboots. Any ideas? I'm truly stumped, and I REALLY don't want to go back to my back-up phone (I do love my Opti S, but still...). Can anyone help?
EDIT: I've flashed the most recent CM nightly (b/c I was on the milestone when the problems started) and that's where I get the farthest. I can get to the screen where the phone tries to turn on Wifi before it locks up and reboots. As a matter of fact, the problems started this morning when my phone wouldn't connect to Wifi or data. Could a bad wifi radio be the reason for the reboots?
Thanks!

Hmm..tried everything, still reboots. Seems like I can buy myself some time by going airplane mode and turning off NFC. Thinking this is a hardware issue.
Anyone have advice about attempting a return with Sprint or HTC with S-OFF/rooted then back to stock?
Take out your SD card, boot to recovery, wipe everything (data, system, cache, dalvik) and then flash something like cm10 and try fast boot flashing the boot.IMG from the ROM...just for the sake of trying.

Exact same thing happened to me. What fixed it for me: Download twrp 2.2.0 from their website. Since adb is acting up, use the pg..zip one that flashes from fastboot. Copy to root of sd card and boot phone into fastboot. The directions are on their website in more detail.

For some reason, my recovery freezes every time when I'm doing something that involves wiping cache (doing a factory reset, or restoring a backup). This happens on both TWRP and CWM. Even weirder is the fact that I never had this problem before, it only started happening recently. Wondering if there is a corrupt file somewhere I should look at to troubleshoot??
I had that with twrp - my cache partition was corrupt.
Never had that with CWM Touch though, so I don't have any suggestions there.

Thanks for the reply. Now of course my next logical question would be -- What is the solution?
Mine was to switch from twrp to CWM Touch, which formatted mine fine when twrp wouldn't. Lol. Obviously that isn't going to work for you if cwm is failing too.

So the only way to fix this is to flash back to stock using LGNPST?
Yes. Pretty much. I don't know of any other way right now. Sucks for me as I don't use widows.

Open an adb shell and do the following, give it a few minutes to complete. It'll be done when it complains about being out of space.
Code:
su

This keeps happening to me as well. It wasn't until recently when it started doing this. I was using FreeGee's version of CWM and it started doing this. Then I just switched to the touch version of CWM and it is still doing it. This just started happening yesterday if I recall correctly.
I have no idea how to run an adb shell or whatever Shellnutt said. Just googled it and they're giving me different ways. What's the easiest method for doing this?
EDIT: And I keep getting a "E:Can't open /cache/recover/log"for basically every command I do in CWM. The commands themselves still work (well, except clearing cache apparently) but all the others are working fine. So something is seriously wrong with my cache haha
---------- Post added at 04:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:46 PM ----------
okay so I downloaded Android Terminal Emulator and typed in exactly what shellnutt said in the other post. Just booted into recovery and it wiped cache! Not sure if it was just a coincidence or I did something right lol. Either way, I'm up and running!
Trying this from the "terminal command" from twrp. It repeats the line on the screen back to me, doesn't appear to be doing anything but i'll wait. Otherwise ill try adb when i get home. Thanks shellnut.
success!
I realize that this is an old thread, but I wanted to say that shellnut's instructions (post #10) worked for me on my htc one (m7) with CM11. I had to enable root for adb for it to work first, though (Settings > Developer options > Root access > choose "Apps and ADB").
Any cache-related operations in CWM (cache wipe, factory reset, or cache backup) would take many, many minutes to complete--to the point that I thought CWM recovery had crashed/frozen. After doing what shellnut suggested, the cache backup step when doing a nandroid backup is now instantaneous, and wiping the cache only takes about 45 seconds (I guess that's the minimum time it takes to format the cache partition on my device).
Don't be nervous if you see some cache mount errors when booting into CWM recovery first time after doing the dd command. Just go ahead and "wipe cache" and the cache mount errors in CWM go away on their own after that.
My wife has a Thunderbolt that was given to us about 6 months ago. I rooted it following a guide I found on here and everything has been fine up until now.
The other day it must have downloaded an update and is now stuck in a never ending boot loop. It will boot like normal and somethimes you can use it for a few minutes before it restarts itself and boots into CWM other times you can use it for hours before it does this.
How can I get rid of this update and stop it from doing this?
Please help ASAP, the wife without her phone is like a squeaky wheel without oil.
Can you boot in to the boot loader and see if you still have s off. If so boot in to recovery wipe everything and flash a backup or do a full wipe and load a new ROM. If you was on a custom ROM I can't see how you could of gotten an update as awhile back all devas disabled the ota update on the phone. To boot in to boot loader press power and volume down at the same time.

I didn't flash a custom rom, I just rooted it so she wouldn't get the ads in some of the games she plays.
Yes when I boot into the bootloader S-OFF
I was hoping to just use astro or some other file manager to delete the file that checks for updates or something like that. Is that not an option?
I know it's an update because when it stays on for a while I can watch it attempt the update download, which I can longpress on and press back and it stops it (I think that's what I was doing)
Try wiping cache and delvic cache. If I remember correctly it will clear out the ota that's trying to install but can't because your s off. Worse thing is to do. A full wipe and reload her phone.

If you're running the stock rooted 2.3.6 it may be trying to update. You can stop it by deleting or renaming the otacerts file.

I found 2 of them, but the phone restarted before I could try to rename it. I also found wipe cache partitioni, so I wiped that and dalvik again, we'll see what happens.
This time when it booted it said update failed and so far it is still on. For some reason astro found 2 files (which obviously I can't rename with that program), but root explorer only found one, which I renamed with .bak so........hopefully it worked.
I'll know in a few hours and will post results for future users with this problem.
THANKS!!!!!
So far so good! Thanks to everyone that helped!
If you are going to run rooted stock might want to look for an ota blocker so this doesn't happen again.

Well, I had a bit of fun tonight. I decided for whatever reason to format /data, not just a factory reset, totally format it!
After that I wasn't able to boot into recovery, it would flash for a moment and near instantly reboot and hang at the kernel forever.
To fix it, boot into bootloader mode, select fastboot.
run commands;
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot
after your phone fully boots you will be able to access recovery again.
I tracked it down to the cache folder not getting recreated, not sure if I could reproduce it, don't care to try, but if anyone else runs into this, this should fix it right up!
Were you sweating bullets during the process or were you confident you'd be able to figure it out?

Well, I flashed TWRP and the same thing happened, it would pop up for a second and reboot.
I was trying to install Beanstalk 4.4.2, and it kept boot looping into recovery(twrp) so I ended up trying to revert back to stock "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2017525" and I install the hboot first then the radio then the recovery, and after the recovery it just bootloops to a triangle with a red exclamation point in it.
Now it sounds like you are bootlooping into stock recovery. What have you tried to run the RUU?
