If you really want to know (that is, understand) how rooting works, here is the article that explained it to me, linked from this thread.
Also, see this guide.

Bit of a noob question here, as my ADB proficiency is a bit lacking... In the sticky titled "Return to stock properly and safely" the instructions refer to pushing a file called "misc.img," however, when I attempt this, it obviously finds no file with that title. I've downloaded the two files from the post and tried them both on the root of my drive and in the tools folder of the SDK, but with no luck. I'd like to unroot for the time being to compare rooted performance to stock performance (i'm sure I'll end up rooting again before long... I bore easily!) Any input from the pros would be welcome! Thanks!
I'm pretty sure you can just slap on the pg05 img onto your sd card, reboot into stock recovery and let it load..

sounds like you dont have your path set correctly if you placed it in the tools folder and it didn't push You could manually cd your sdcard or whichever location the misc.img file is placed in to push it if your path IS set correctly and I'm overlooking something...
you have to extract the misc file to your tools file

OK I have a weird question about rooting of my optimistic v. First off I was rooting my ole lady's Motorola triumph(easiest ever to root) since from factory it has a sudo file in it already. You just have to root the phone thru terminal emulator.
Now to my question when I send my phone off to get fixed,do they gain root access like we have to or is that file already on the phone and they just have to command it on? And if so what file? Seeing as you need root access to view the system folder can't really see anything that looks like it has anything to do with su. I've looked with root explorer.
Just wondering if anyone knew, I'm pretty sure they hook it up to a computer and give it temporary root and take it off when they ship it back
Thanks

My buddy rooted my phone last year and flashed cyanogenmod 7.1.1. My bluetooth piece will not connect to my phone and I'm thinking I need to flash a new rom.
I have no idea how to do this. I tried to read up on stuff like adb and sdk.
I could really use some serious guidance on how to update my rom.
I'm running Android 2.3.7 with Cyanogenmod 7.1.1.
Can I install any type of mod, now? Like Sense?
I hope I am posting this in the proper place.
Thank you
This needs to be moved to q and a. Anyhow, you can now flash other roms. There is a guide posted somewhere im sure. Just google thunderbolt Rom flashing guide or something like that.

How do I move this to Q and A?
And I can run any other type of ROM? Would I have to re-download rom manager and all that? I've been reading up on titanium backup. So I really just download the file to my SD card then delete data/dalvik then reboot to recovery and install new rom there? There redownload titanium and do a restore?

Thank you much. I will read, then re-read this, then ask any questions I may have.
Have a great Monday!
What I really need is the ability to use my blue tooth headsest. Do I have to flash a whole new ROM for this? Or should I flash a radio?
I've been reading up on flashing a new rom but am still confused. Do I need to flash the rom THEN flash an RUU (radio?). How about kernels?
I'm worried that I would have issues with the small things...like clearing/formatting my data/dalvik.
Also, how do I add my Radio/RUU to the "Root" of my SD card?
And can anyone clarify how to verify M5sum? I have a program downloaded for it, but don't know how to use it.
First off radios and ruus are two different things. The radio does need to be on the root of the sd card to be flashed. It doesn't really matter if you flash the radio before or after because that won't change between flashes. I find the best way to do it is just download the radio using the phone. Browse with a root file explorer like es file explorer to the download folder, rename the file to PG05IMG.zip, copy, paste it one folder back (that's the root directory). After you flash it in the bootloader browse to the file and rename it.

Thank you for the reply. I'll download a root file explorer. How should I download a radio on my phone?
Do you think the radio is the issue with my bluetooth not working?
Thanks again.
Hi folks, first post.
I'm trying to root my daughters Nabi 2 using the very good guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016463
However at the moment i don't have an sdcard in it. My question is this (and i apologize if this is a silly noob question but the touchscreen revolution seemed to miss me) Can i just push root.zip and gapps.zip to the tablet rather than an sd card? Obviously i'd have the change the script to reflect this, but would it be as simple as changing the path when i'm using adb and changing the path on the script?

Yes. The even easier option is to manually run the steps in the script. If you look at the script, option 1 doesn't even push root even though it says it does.
Easiest way is flash twrp recovery (newest 2.3.3 version) and transfer root.zip and the nabi 2 gapps over and flash those via twrp.

I got a replacement phone from Assurian today. Note 2 with I605VRUEMJ9.
I'd like to be able to root it to run apps requiring boot. Can you please point me at the thread on how to root this phone? I've used ODIN and CASUAL before on other Note2's but this is the first one I have with MJ9.
I read in the Safestrap dev thread this:
Sounds like it requires root already? I'm a little lost here. Thanks.
HOW DO I INSTALL SAFESTRAP?
1.Requirement: Root
2.Requirement: Allow APK install from Unknown Sources
3.Download the Safestrap APK
4.Find the APK using a Filemanager tool and open it on your device, then click "Install".

Thanks to k1mu for posting the root method and h311sdr0id for pointing it out for the Note 2.
Good luck.
