I saw that I was hoping I could block ota without rooting. Thanks though I guess I'm going to have to root.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda premium

This doesn't require root.

The lgfota one. It's ok that numbers differ slightly. Fear not.

OTA updates with ROOT?

Ok, so I'm on the edge to root my Samsung Galaxy S3 (AT&T), but I have one concern. Jellybean is supposed to land on this phone in a month, and I was wondering that when I root my phone (no custom ROMs) can I update to jellybean OTA with the root, and have no problems?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
It's gonna be best to un-root before doing the eventual OTA update because it can play havoc with your phone otherwise.
If you stayed rooted and still done the OTA, the best case scenario is that it'll simply take your root status away, but it can cause more problem than simply that.

What's worse case scenario? And it is usually easy to unroot
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I'm not too sure what the worst case scenario is, I just remember reading it not long ago.
I didn't word that last post too well to explain properly. If you're only rooted then you'll be fine to do the OTA. It's if you have CWM installed that errors can happen.
So, you're fine to root but you'll have to re-root once you've done the update.

Ahhhh okay. So if I root and stay on stock ROM ( I'm not playing to put on any custom ROMs anytime soon) I can update OTA, and everything will go well, and then I'll just root again?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
It says I need to install CWM Recovery for the root

That's right yes.
What method are you planning on using to root?

Many people run rootkeeper or the like to take OTA updates without issue. Haven't seen having root causing issues, just taking updates after erasing bloatware.
So if I root, I shouldn't have any problem updating to jellybean OTA?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I'm pretty sure you will. I rooted my phone and couldn't do a OTA so I just went with a custom rom that updates. Best decision ever

But what if I don't install any ROMs
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I'm sure the devs in your forum will offer a stock rooted ROM based off the OTA. So just keep your root and wait for them. Hell . They often release theirs before the official push.

Trust me, you do. I think there's already JB for the galaxy s3 through a custom ROM.

OK, so if I root, just root only.. no custom ROMs, nothing fancy, just being rooted, I won't be able to receive OTA updates at all?

Some devs here are starting to work on their OTA updates for their ROMs. Otherwise, most devs here work at a much faster pace to release their updates than any manufacturer or carrier will.
So its impossible to straight up OTA from your device if your rooted with no ROMs installed?? I don't want to wipe out my data and restore my backup all for a "ROM" because I can't update legittimatly from the OTA server

Its possible to receive ota updates... do it like this.. root your device.. don't remove bloatwares.. don't install custom kernel or rom.. then unroot your device before trying to use ota updates... it works for me.. so no worries..

Pretty much like this. But it makes rooting quite limited, so I don't see why you would go throught the hassle when a custom ROM is a waaayy better choice. Just my opinion, though

New phone update

Just receive a notification, that an update is available today. Does anyone know what it does, I know I shouldn't doit since it might break root.

Have you had a previous update? If you have SuperSU it should be easy to unroot. Did you unlock bootloader?

Just yesterday I unlock bootloader and using a custom Rom.

How big was the download?
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
Pretty sure custom rom puts you back to the older ATT base which will trigger the request. Once it fails it won't ask again
Thank you I think it was that and it did fail ,sorry false alarm.

I purchased the phone yesterday. So this may be an update that you guys already received.

I've already rooted/unlocked my phone, and I'm running the base ROM. Is it safe to install this update? I haven't seen anyone mention it, so I'm thinking it's probably alright. However, I figured it would be safer to ask anyway, given the "do not allow any OTAs to install without asking if they are compatible" warning in the FreeGee thread .

I don't think it will install if you're not on stock. I think the install will fail.

New update from att?

I saw a second update from att? There was an update when I first bought the phone after rooting that did not affect anything. I had changed my network to exclude fota but I am still seeing an update it mentioned that this was the first of three attempts anyone else seeing an update? Is there a way to block it.

just root it and then install TWRP (goo manager app). This will keep any OTA's from being able to be installed.

I have the GS4 on Verizon and I plan on waiting a little while to root my phone. However, I don't want to accidentally update my phone if Verizon pushes an OTA update. So my question is this: if Verizon does push out an update, does it install automatically or do you have to specifically give permission to install it?
According to my knowledge it will notify you that you have update. ..
