Galaxy Player 3.6 not rooted possibly bricked - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

Okay so first of all I've been trying to root this Galaxy Player for a while apperantly there's a rom with root already on it so I downloaded it and tried to flash it using Heimdall for Mac. Now the device won't boot it is stuck on the Samsung part with a yellow triangle and does nothing after that. I tried to restore it by using the pit file but it still won't work is there anything I can do? Please help thanks
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

Using the Heimdall software I successfully unbricked the player. I had to force the device in download mode then download the recovery image. Then I flashed it using the kernel option. I'd like to root this device using either the Android SDK or Heimdall can anyone help me thanks

You never mentioned if you have the us or international version. If you have a physical home button it is international, capacitive home button is us. In Odin you just flash it in PDA mode, I would expect it to be similar for you, but I've only used odin
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app

I'm using the United States version no physical button. Odin doesn't work on a MAC computer I also have a version of Linux that's compatible with Ubuntu repositories so if there's some other kind of software I can use. I just strictly use Unix like operating systems

those are the files for rooting your device. i used odin but im sure you can use heimdall.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app

So iv flashed the rom now I still don't have super user access I use Heimdall still anyone know how to root this device with the Android SDK?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

i decided to try to get heimdall working on osx (i also only use unix, and only have windows handy in a vm for using odin)
I renamed the .tar.md5 files to .tar and extracted the .img from them.
first i tried
Code:
heimdall flash --factoryfs factoryfs.img
with heimdall 1.3.2 i had problems uploading factoryfs.img so i downgraded to heimdall 1.3.1
with 1.3.1 it flashes factoryfs.img, but then my device just bootloops
i have tried heimdall from a linux vm as well but i get the same results.
the fix is easy, i simply open my windows vm, attach the device in download mode (i love my usb jig!), open odin, check pda, click pda, select my factoryfs.tar.md5 and click start
i too would like to get this working in heimdall, let me know if you have better luck with it!

I know that copying the su binary to the system/bin doesn't work because apperantly its a read only file system
IV tried copying the su binary keep getting read only status. There has to be a way to use the Android SDK to get this thing rooted. I rooted my Nexus 7 using psneuter still no luck with the Galaxy Player thouh
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

If you want root you need to flash the file in odin.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app

So what your saying is that i can flash the su binary to the xbin or bin... Or just flash the rom im afraid of a boot loop i experienced
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

I get the same boot loop results using heimdall. I'm trying to find a fix. Until we find it, use it in Odin and it works.

[Q] Root Fascinate on Mac

Hey guys,
I understand that this thread exists. I have read through many pages and still cannot get this to work for me. I would love to root the phone however i cannot get it to work with my Macbook running Snow leopard. Please help I am a noob to this kind of stuff but would love a root. The reason it doesn't work for me is because I get to push everything but then my phone cannot be found in terminal. Please help guys!!!!
I just used Bootcamp. Installed Windows on my iMac. Downloaded Samsung drivers, Super One Click, and un-rooted. I think that's easiest. Just get on a windows pc or BootCamp.
I had a similar problem. I could get everything pushed except for superuser. I had to download it from the market directly. Also it could be your rom. I was having problems connecting to my mac until the ED01 release. Make sure you are on that version. The best write up I found was in the android central forums by Cory Streater. Worked like a charm except the super user problem. Hope that helps a little.
Just use heimdall to flash cwm, then flash a rom that is rooted

Have you done this personally? From what I understand and have actually found out from experience is that because of a faulty secondary bootloader the Samsung fascinate cannot have files flashed to it via heimdall or even with Odin running windows via virtual machine on a Mac. Bootloading a fascinate via Mac = not possible. Someone PLEASE correct me if I am wrong.

If you can get the use of a PC there is a file you can flash to your phone that will root it. Let me know if I can help you.

Mac + Heimdall is not the problem. Mac + samsung fascinate bootloader is the problem. You can install the fascinate drivers on a mac and you can mount your sd card with a mac but when you try to put the fascinate into download mode (access the bootloader) with a mac it will not work because of a faulty secondary bootloader. So, basically you can get heimdall pulled up on a mac but it won't let you flash anything to it. At least this has been my experience. If you know something I don't please share. I have a macbook pro and I am screwed in this regard.
Weird, I was able to put mine in download mode and flash the modem.bin file on my wifes mac...though never tried a rom or recovery...i normally use heimdall on archlinux though...i did the modem the one time on a 10.5 macbook pro.
If nothing else I guess u could use bootcamp to install windows and do it that way instead of vm...

Can't unbrick u.s. 4.0 help please

Well... I've done it again... But this time I can't seem to unbrick it. I tried to flash hanthesolo's stratusrom but it failed and bootlooped. So I went and tried restore from a backup that had cm7. For some reason it bootlooped again. so I went in to Odin and tried to go back to stock just to get things working again. I failed and ended up going to stock recovery with a bunch of errors. So then I just panicked and tried flashing different combos of pit files and roms and stuff. Now I can boot into cwm. But I still can't restore from an older backup or revert to stock firmware. Any ideas???

I made instructions for the US device. Read them below in the thread. (it is normal that no .tar.md5 are here)
Drivers fail to install. I also can't open heimdall frontend exe. Some dll file is missing or something.

You will need Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 redistributables. And put your device into download mode when your are installing the drivers.
I can't seem to find windows visual c++ 2010 for x32. And I did have my player in download mode when I installed the drivers.

(Q) Help! How do I unroot my device?

Good day everyone. So apparently I had the courage to root my device using clockwork mod using the i717 method. It was successful and I had superuser installed.
It couldn't get anymore worse. I attempted to install cyanogenmod and it failed. At the restore center (you hold down both volume rockers and the power button), it shows the android robot dead with a red exclamation mark when I attempted to install from a zip file. Fortunately, my phone was able to boot up without issues.
Just now, I installed a root checker app and it says that my phone is not properly rooted. Please, can anyone teach me how to unroot? I can jailbreak my itouch with no issues but this is very complex for me.
Sent from my GT-N7005 using xda premium
Just to clarify, when I open up the zip file of the rom I transferred to my device, it suddenly starts copying to an unknown place of my computer. After that, it would open up the zip file.

flash stock rom via odin
Sent from my GT-S6500D using xda premium
Probably used wrong method. To unroot u just remove su if you want also rm superuser app. But the rest is not because of the root. Can you flash with odin?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Yes, I can flash using odin and I had just re-root my phone. The root checker now says that the phone is rooted.
Now the problems lie with the copying of rom zip files to my device. Whenever I tried to copy, it would stop around 3 quarter. When I try to open it up, it would start copying to a weird folder inside 'temp'.

The rom is cyanogenmod. But this problem is not about the rom. Instead, it relates more to the transferring of the zip file from the computer to my device.

It's okay. I had installed cyanogenmod through ROM manager and it's really cool!

Did you try flashing something different?
I'm not familiar with that file, but from the name it looks like a stand-alone CWM recovery rather than a kernel. If that's the case, it wouldn't flash, and might damage your phone. Where did you get that? Is it a kernel for the I777 that is just named strangely? Or is it really a stand-alone CWM?

You're right, I didn't pay attention to the file name. Looks like a standalone recovery, I figured OP would've made sure it was what he needed.

You need to flash a kernel from XDA only. The I777 has recovery built in the kernel.

The file he got was from the clockworkmod site. (Rom manager site) or another site that hosted that sites file.

Odin does not install to your computer, it simply launches.
What OS are you on? If you're on Windows Vista or 7 it should work perfectly, I don't know if it'll work on XP. On Mac I believe you use Heimdall. On Linux you use Heimdall.

The toolkit can be dangerous just because it had an unreleased firmware (it was what Samsung used to test the phone before they started selling it) that was the "return to stock" firmware, and I'm unsure if the creator ever removed it so it still probably has it, and was completely unrootable by all of our exploits, unable to be unlocked, and unable to be flashed in Odin so there is no way to get back to stock.
While the other things in the toolkit haven't had as many big complaints as the "return to stock" feature I still wouldn't use it. If it has that there is no telling what else is going on behind the scenes.

This is the thread for droidstyle's guide to restore to stock. Has Odin download and all necessary files. Shangrila is right, be careful with that toolkit. Personally, I would stay completely away from it.
