Which hboot do you have?
xpirt
i think its ICS cos its 1.24. Its the one which is attached to nexusPrime's MIUI 3.22 ROM.
You need to update your hboot to jb version (1.25), because boot partition from ICS hboot is too small for jb kernel. That's why you get the error.

How do I do that?

I'm also having trouble installing the MIUI 3.22 ROM. Whenever I install it, and reboot, it gives me the HTC screen and red text. Help pls!

Whats your CID?
HTC_044

You have the same CID as me and ckpv5.
Do these steps.
Flash an ICS version TWRP or CWM recovery.
Restore NANDroid Backup uploaded by ckpv5 which matches your software revision number.
Flash Stock recovery.img and stock Boot.img
Then reboot to ROM and it will be stock.
You will then receive and OTA update notification on your stock ROM. Do the update and it will automatically update your hboot to 1.25.002 and JB rom.
After that, you can flash the custom JB roms and boots.

Yasir

Should I root now or take an OTA update first?

I just bought this phone this morning and will root it but should I take an OTA first?

I guess my question is, will I still be able to unlock the bootloader and root the phone if I do take the ota?
Edit...I went ahead and took the ota, unlocked the bootloader, rooted and flashed the Viper Kitkat Rom. All is good now.

Ota s-on?

I have to ask this because I am not sure, Do I have to be s-on to receive the ota?
I think not but i am not sure.

No.. You can be S-OFF and get OTA updates. You just need to be running Stock recovery, Kernel and Rom for update with bootloader Locked.
Ok thanks

Root Stock HTC M8 updated to lollipop

Is there currently a way to root stock lollipop 5.0.2 on the m8? If so, some links would be very much appreciated.
I've been completely MIA on XDA for awhile so sorry if this is a dumb question.
