I have looked and looked, but I haven't gotten a straight forward answer on this.
I don't want to root my phone. Which app still lets me tether without having to turn on the Verizon hotspot and get charged extra for that service? (much like Foxfi does for just about every other phone I've seen)
No, just use a widget.

What widget? I just bought the Note 2 a day ago so I am still trying to figure it all out. Came from a Moto Droid X so this thing feels light years ahead of me.
Any widget that toggles wifi tether.
search the play store.

Ok, now I feel like an idiot.
I just got the Note 2, and signed a new contract. Last time I signed a contract (2+ years ago), they wanted 20 something bucks for you to use their VZW Hotspot, so I always used Foxfi to get around it and just use up all of my data plan. I guess Verizon just got smart and made it free? :silly:
Had me worried when I kept downloading *Free Wi-Fi hotspot* apps and they kicked me over to the VZW app instead.
Thanks for the help!
Its not free but it is included with any of the new plans. If you still have unlimited data its still frowned upon. With that said yes you can use a toggle but the hotspot will drop data frequently. I recommend you root and install the wireless tether from google. Settings i use are S3 profile, netd-ndc setup, check th3 following: send netd, both wifi driver reloads, mss clamping, and router fix.

Try "elixir 2 widgets" which is different from "elixir 2" from the play store. Once installed create a widget on your home screen for wifi tether and it should bypass the vzw block. It worked on stock unrooted vzw build for me but now I dont need it. Yay!

I just came across a free WiFi tethering application called FoxFi, which is available from the Android Market. This enabled WiFi tethering for non-rooted phones. Version 1.31 is still a beta, and I've only downloaded it a few minutes ago. But I am connected via my phone right now and it seems to work.

I just installed this app this morning and tested it out for about 5 mins and it worked great!
Anybody know how this will appear on AT&T's system? Easily figured out by the carrier?

I have yet to contact the developer, but on SGN, all it appears to do is modify your stock wifi sharing settings. I'll try on a razr maxx tomorrow and see if it's the same.
edit: appears to be same on the moto bionic. Double check under settings, wireless, mobile hotspot settings.
Not saying it shouldn't work as intended, but the fact that it shows up in the stock hotspot is slightly alarming.
Works great on samsung stratosphere all the other tether apps didn't work for me so this one is doing something different

You shouldn't have to explicitly turn on WiFi. I think that's why you're getting the Verizon notice. Once you start FoxFi, everything is configured in that application.
I did have a problem where it - FoxFi - seemed to keep background sync turned on. But, I also had some other things going on with my phone at that moment, so I can't say for sure if it was FoxFi that was doing it. I'll try it again later to see if I can determine what was going on.
Sometimes you have to reboot the phone after installing/configuring the app the first time.
Always open the FoxFi app for configuring or toggling the app on and off.
When you turn off tethering you may have to toggle wifi on again since it turns off wifi.
When the Green Tethering Icon shows up in the notification bar, don't open it or select anything from there.
I have it on two Razr's working fine.
Great app works great on my razr but just doesn't work on the thunderbolt
finally
So far this app works better than the phone 's app and the android wifi tether app.
doesn't work on my rooted stock Asia ROM (latest update), whereas the Android Wifi Tether beta works well. I can connect momentarily, but the connecting device never receives an IP address. not sure exactly what's going on.

Ive had that same problem with android wifi tether. It would connect and process. But after 50 megs process it dies out. And no connection. Ive played with dns settings and channels and nothing to get consistant tethering till now. With foxfi that is. Sux its not working for you. The only thing i can suggest is try different versions of the wifi tether app. Before the first 2 updates on the US razr. I was using an older version of android wifi tether that worked smoothly. You just gotta try to find the one that works for you

Love this App, Works great!!!
This app works perfectly on my CDMA RAZR and my wifes RAZR MAXX. Been using it for a few days. Successfully tethered a PS3, B&N Nook Color, all of our Mac Computers. The only confusing point with this one was that you cannot shut down the hotspot from the notification pulldown area. You have to open the app back up and uncheck the box for enabling / disabling the hotspot. Not sure how this works for getting around the included hotspot app but if it works I guess I don't care. Two big thumbs up for this app!
just downloaded and hook my pc up and now im posting from my pc using my razr wifi tehetr on this foxfi app so sweet...thanks for share!!!!!!!!!!!

Works on my Razor Maxx. Connected on my Xoom. With FoxFi I Might turn data off on my xoom and concentrate on my razor's data usage.
Can Verizon track the data usage?? I Don't have the unlimitied data usage.
Verified working on my Razr Maxx. Got a 7mbps down speed on a mediocre 4G signal on my Iconia tablet.
Ya about the people with HTC phones
"Message from team: some user recommended FoxFi in a popular deal website and the whole world come to install it. While this is awesome we have a hard time keeping up with our support emails. We are aware of some most reported issues: the Motorola Triumph crash will be fixed in our next update. Atrix 2/4G are not supported yet and we are looking into it. HTC phones users can only use Bluetooth mode. A WiFi hotspot lock exists in HTC Android that can not be bypassed and we are truly sorry."
Just notice that in the what's new section of the market place.
I was thinking about using the app wifi tether and was wondering about ATT detecting it. I am on unlimited data and don't want to get the boot...if I used it once in a great while.

I have been using the stock tethering by rooting and deleting some tethering apk (look for it somewhere in the forums). But I have not had any issues or messages about tethering. They will give you a warning if you are detected though and that'll give you time to stop tethering. In other words they're not gonna just take you off unlimited instantly.
If you're still on gingerbread root the phone and download titanium backup and delete tethering manager then boom. Don't have to pay for tethering services

Ok, so back on topic here.
They can and they can't.
If you just browse the net and do normal things like that, no, they can't.
But, you start sucking up bandwidth playing MMO's and downloading torrents, then yeah, they will get you eventually.
The amount of Bandwidth you use will get you before they seek you out for tethering is what I am trying to say. Just be reasonable and responsible is all.
On my cappy I was running saurom and tethered alot of the day to my laptop. Never got anything from ATT. Now I have the Note and its stock. Installed FoxFi and within a few days of just normal browsing I got a text from ATT so I had to call them and stop tethering, don't want to lose my unlimited data plan.

I have unlimited data and used to tether my laptop to my Infuse when my internet was down at my college house. My roommates also would tether to it and use their laptops and our internet connected bluray player to watch netflix. I never had any problems, until I installed a ROM that didn't have the tetheringmanager.apk removed, because the developer thought free tethering was wrong...ugh. I didn't bother to check for it being uninstalled, as most custom ROMs have it removed, and I got a text from AT&T about an hour later.
I was really pissed when I went and read that the dev didn't remove it, because it caused me to lose my tethering ability since I want to keep my unlimited data, but it was also my fault for not checking. Long story short, make sure the apk is reoved, and you should be good to go. They may still catch you if you use enormous amounts of data as others have said, but they will warn you before changing your unlimited plan to a tiered tethering one.
My suggestion, do it while you can, and just stop if you get warned! =]
Ok pretty much what I was expecting. I have a few questions but first I want to clarify that I'm on Saurom VII, does anyone know if this ROM had the APK removed and what's the name of it so I can remove with titanium if need be? Thanks in advance.

Edit: I found two apps named wifi share 1.0 and wifi sharing manager 1.0...bingo?
No bingo, though I don't think it would hurt to remove those either, as those could also tip off att, not sure though. The one you need to make sure of is tetheringmanager.apk. Go into root explorer: system > app > and delete tetheringmanager.apk

You can freeze it if you have the Premium Titanium Backup. If you don't you can back it up then uninstall it. That way you can restore it if need.
Yes. Freezing works.

I'm really curious as to how exactly AT&T figures out who tethers. In the past, I tethered all the time whenever I needed to use my laptop in the field. Never a problem, and I never abused it. Then I got my international SGSII (GT-I9100). I was trying to download a wi-fi driver to my home PC so I could connect with my Cox Cable internet home network. I probably had tethering on for maybe 5 minutes, and I know I had to have consumed <5megs of data. A couple hours later I got the email and text from AT&T telling me they were moving me off the unlimited plan to the limited plan.
How'd they know? The phone isn't available on AT&T, and didn't have any of AT&T's tething apk's like tetheringmanager.apk. I've tried Googling to see if anybody knows exactly how they know, but nobody seems to know.
ClockworkMod Tether is supposed to be invisible to the phone company. I'm just afraid to test it now! Tether link: http://goo.gl/7Ay6w

There's been a lot of discussion about how AT&T detects tethering. From everything I've read, I believe that they look at the TTL parameter in the packets to see if there's an extra hop. When you tether, packets originate on the tethered device and the TTL gets changed. Apparently, some of the USB tether apps like ClockworkMod Tether don't change the TTL, so they avoid detection.
I haven't tested this myself, so I don't know for sure that ClockworkMod Tether is safe to use. Maybe other people have used it and can report here.

Isn't the Tethering Manager app needed for 3rd party Tethering to work? When I start FoxFi, Tethering Manager also got started immediately. I am on stock rooted.
I got the text from AT&T saying that I had to stop tethering so I called and tried to lie about but they said they were tipped off because I accessed the apple store multiple time and since I was on WM at the time it would be impossible for me to do that on my device. They were correct I was tethering to an ipod touch and they somehow knew. The women told me sometimes they get tips from their security system that tells them different things about the likelyhood of what customers are tethering and when their system gathers enough information to prove someone is tethering it automatically sends a text to that customer. I felt stupid for tryin to lie after she told me their records show I never switched my sim to an iphone and was still able to access the apple store several times. I never got caught tethering until I tethered the ipod.

Got Titanium Backup Pro, however, cant find any tether guard app. to freeze. Sad that I get up to 18mbps down and 12mbps up on my EVO LTE running viper4g 3.1.6. On my Wi-Fi tether I tried all different settings, still my attached devices only get 0.56down and 0.7up.
Any info on how to sustain same or at least faster speeds on my attached devices would be appreciated.

I'm pretty positive it's an htc app for verizon. Here's a post on a thunderbolt that has it which explains it a bit.
http://www.thunderboltforums.com/forum/htc-thunderbolt-apps/7004-tethering-guard-2-3-4-a.html
If you google "tethering guard htc" there's a lot of info out there about it. Though if you don't have it I'd imagine there is something else creating a bottleneck for your bandwidth.
I'm using the latest version of open garden wifi tether on my rooted incredible 4g and the device profile is set to htc rezound. Encryption is WPA2-PSK, though it's set to auto. Tethered tablet got around 3Mbps dl, and 4 Mbps up on a test I just did, though it can vary.
Hope this helps.

Ah, I thought you had a incredible 4g since this is under the incredible 4g troubleshooting section. Most likely tethering guard is something verizon makes htc put on their phones, so sprint may use another app, or another method. I believe one of the reasons an htc one phone isn't on verizon yet is because htc did not like the software verizon required them to put on their phones (don't hold me to that though).
Also I use "Open Garden Wifi Tether" (Labeled in the play store "WiFi Tethering" by open garden) not to be mistaken with "Open Garden" by open garden. The former requires root and does not require the app to be on both devices as it simply creates a mobile hotspot. I'd suggest giving it a try.
If your carrier blocks it in the play store here is a direct link for the apk that open garden provides in it's description on the play store:

Well I could not find Open Garden Wifi on the app store. Followed your link and was able to install the apk. App looks very much like the WiFi Tether I have just with a background wallpaper and less options in settings. Device profile does not list EVO LTE, used Samsung galaxy nexus (CDMA/LTE) which work fine with my wifi tether app, but I could not get Open Garden to broadcast at all, tried several setting, also noticed there are no settings for MSS clamping and Routing Fix to check on. Those I have to have checked in order for my WiFi Tether app to work.(So I went back to WiFi Tether 3.3 beta 2) and I have a hotspot again but still at 3g speeds. Really miffed cuz at my location I get up to 19MBPS down and 9.42 up. When I turn on my WiFi Tether my friends with IPhones or tablets get like 1.26down and about same up. I have to do some serious searching on this one. There is a newer version of WiFi Tether 3.3 beta3 but that app does not work at all. I rooted my EVO LTE mainly for the tethering function. I apologize if I posted in wrong forum btw (I get Forum Dementia) easy. and again thanks for your advices. I think I'll have to poke Team Venom about the Viperg 3.1.6 Rom I'm running. I also used Titanium Backup and looked for any kind of tethering guard but my search only produced the actual WIFi tether app. Nothing resembling tether guard. Again thanks for all your help.

No it hasn't been hacked yet to bypass the check.
You used to be able to use the app "power toggles" I don't know how ir did it, but, when you used the hotspot toggle, it just turned on the naitive hotspot app and didn't check for subscription. Didn't even need root. I tested this one day at a haw store. Installed power toggles on like 8 of the display phones and turned on the hotspots, no security , with ssids like "free internet!" , "vzw free hotspot" and so on
Worked on all models lol

Hello,
My wife broke the screen on her phone and the replacement came with 4.3 pre-loaded on the phone. I got it rooted but I really don't want to use the Verizon tethering app. We have always used the Treve-mod Wifi Tether. Don't use custom roms so don't care about the locked bootloader. We just tether because we have unlimited data. How do you tether on ota 4.3 that is rooted?

Check out FoxFi in the Play Store. Sadly it is a paid app but I think it works well for what I need it for.
I am also open to suggestions as I like to play with apps and see if something is a better fit for my needs!
I'm in the same boat. Note 2 with cracked screen came back from Samsung warranty repair with 4.3 OTA software and locked bootloader. Even with root, the best solution I've found is FoxFi, which is an $8 app. Can't speak to how stable it is, I've only used it for a few hours.
I definitely miss using Wifi Tether Treve Mod with 4.1.2. No way would I have taken the OTA, but cracked screens happen... Probably time to sell this thing. At least the Note 3 despite it's locked bootloader currently can be used with safestrap which allows for free tethering solutions / custom roms.
Anyone have a way to do this WITHOUT an app? I have SQlite Editor if needed.

This is what I used to get wifi tether going for my wife. I used the hotspot toggle widget. Just follow the directions....
(Info Pulled from here)
The App - Hotspot Toggle Widget
1. Open Settings> More Settings> Mobile Hotspot on your phone.
2. Select Mobile Hotspot but do not turn it on.
3. Tap on Configure and set your hotspot settings.
4. Now go to Google Play Store and download the Hotspot app: Hotspot Toggle Widget (Price: Free) (Developer: Fattin Hotspot Network)
5. The app will add a widget in your phone’s widget drawer. Add the widget to your homescreen.
6. Now turn the toggle widget on.
7. Press the Home button to cancel if you see any popup window.
8. Done!
