An app that makes your phone to a small guitar amp?
The iphone version has been out for a while but i cant find any info on a version for android..
The company behind iRig have been speaking about a android version but i dont think they even have started working on one yet.
It would be a really nice application! To allways be ready to record without setting up the computor and stuff like that ya know, or to just sit in the sofa with earplugs and play some sweet solos and riffs without having your gf whine about the loud music..

This would be awesome, I would definitely buy it. It's like a Line 6 pod but much cheaper.

I actually sent then a message on youtube to see if they were working on one. This is what I got.
This is the Mac/PC version. If you look at our AmpliTube iRig playlist you'll find the iPhone version. We're currently looking at the platform but do not have any versions for Android.

Yeah, multi-effect pedal.
Imageing all the fine stuff you could do with it!
You could use it as an effect to plug in to your amp. (maby quite alot of effects, if you can make your own sounds. And with new developing you never have to buy a new effect-pedal again.. ).
A strummer for electric guitar in the studio/rehearsal place.
Play with earplugs on the sofa.

your phone only has one 3.5mm jack plug...and you need to plug a guitar into it and an amp into it too.

I am amazed that this can be done on the iPhone but not on Android.
There is another program called Ghettoamp on the market, though the devloper admits that there is still latency (he records, then processes the sound input). 20ms I think.

Android phones definitely have the processing power to do this. The only real problem is you're input and outputs on your phone, there's really only one... the 3.5 mm jack...
But there's maybe a way around this. And I'm not an engineer or developer or genius of any kind I'm just saying what I think should be at least possible... Everyone knows AD2P Bluetooth right? You could get you're input through it.
You use the microphone of a bluetooth headset, but instead of the microphone, you get your input from you're amp/guitar/whatever... could it be as simple as soldering a headphone jack to the PCB connections on a bluetooth headset? Dunno but let's asume it's possible.
Then you connect your phone to the headset, and you've got input... Great.
The problem now is that I don't know what android does when it has a bluetooth headset AND a normal set of earphones... Does it play from both, does it by default choose, I don't know... Say you still get output from the headphones, you could easily get the output to any speakers, seems rather pointless to use the phone's loudspeaker... This part from bluetooth input to audio jack output will maybe need a modified audio driver or something...
Once you've got input into the phone and output out of the phone, you would like to have some effects and/or amplification right? That's the point isn't it? I know nothing about programming such things but maybe a few developers who do will stumble onto this thread and share their expertise...
Once again it should be possible, but for just anyone to do this it'll be very challenging, more likely and hopefully companies like Gibson or Marshall or Ibanez (their Japanese, and this seems like a Japanese thing to do) for instance will see the need for something like this, and get working on it... If they make something like that and it works well, it'll make a LOT of money... For instance after you've bought this device, they could SELL effects, to be downloaded on a sort of 'plugin-basis'. And once one company does it, all will have some variant of the concept. I know I'd buy this...
Edit: Read about the apparent latency issue that Android has... So I don't know if it's that possible just yet, maybe ICS has bettered this flaw in previous Android versions, one can only hope...

You are thinking much too complicated.
The headphone jack of phones contains another pin for the microphone. A small jumper cable can be used that allows the connection of a guitar and headphones. Check out Amplitube iRig for an example.
(this type of jack is used so you can plug in a headset with microphone)
Bluetooth or something would be nice... but the latency wouldn't be, and that is exactly the problem.. Android has too much latency,

Android is not capable of this because the way it handles audio is completely wrong. More recent devices have less latency but still too much. The problem lies very deep. It is a problem for game developers too. Please star this issue if you want Google to do something about it!

The Irig will work fine for this you dont need bluetooth aor usb adding yet another layer of BS to the audio streams round trip. however now that JB is out latancy is stitting around 10-12ms on adevice such as the galaxy nexus wich is completely usable (1ms of latancy = 1foot from your amp) so 12ms would be like playing 12 feet from your amp,
If you cant play like this then on stage will never work for you.
As a side note usb audio is apparently supported in JB as well now
There are now a couple of apps on Android that at least have a range of guitar effects. Delay Effects Plus (via headphone type cable) and usbEffects (USB OTG) both have an option to use Native Audio, so if you have the Galaxy Nexus running JB the latency is quite reasonable (50-70 mSec). If you have a modded ROM you may get lower latency without Native Audio option as they both read the buffer size from the OS. Of course for everyone else the latency is still an issue and varies from device to device. So to those that said they would buy .... please do!
This very issue has put me on the fence on what kind of tablet I buy. Cannot decide between note, and Ipad 3. The accessories and ItunesU has been one of the biggest attractions for me.
Litlle heads up: in their latest newsletter IK Multimedia (of Amplitube) post a few job openings, one of them being "Android App Developer"!
So they are at least working on something..

I just got an S3 and I'd like to ask if it is possible to listen to FM radio over Bluetooth.
i connect the standard headphones to enable the FM radio and the only option is to switch output between the headphones and the loud speaker.
I've seen cheap chinese android phones doing that, there should be a way.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, help me avoid selling my new toy
Sorry to say but it won't work. The reason (as the app itself already accurately describes in the error message) is that your headphone's cables are used as an antenna for the phone's FM receiver.
FM antenna's are actually quite big (at least compared to other antennas) even when using the so-called fractal design because they use a very slow (roughly 80 - 110 MHz, compared to e.g. WIFI's 2400MHz) frequency. To save space, Samsung moves them to the hedphones on all mobile phones I know of.
I don't know if it still works on S3 (never tried) but on the S1, if the station is broadcasting with enough signal strength, you could cut off the plug of old broken headphones and plug it into the phone to use the radio.
Afaik Spirit FM (now paid in all versions) can override the requirement but you'll need to press your finger to the jack so you can receive anything... pointless.
Alternatively you could use an app for internet radio such as TuneIn; most radio stations (at least all around here) provide web-streams for on-the-go radio listening. However you should make sure you got a decent internet flatrate, I managed to chew through nearly 4GB just with music streaming this month.
Most countries seem to have abolished mobile data flatrates.

The OP understands that the phone needs the cord to act as an antenna. I think what they simply want to know is if the phone can then route the sound to the bluetooth device instead of through the speakerphone or the headphones.

d4fseeker I understand that the headphones should be connected since they serve as fm antenna. What i want is to listen to fm stations through bluetooth while the headphones are connected as bigb25 says.
TuneIn is not a solution for me since some stations I want are not available and cause I am a hiker internet is not always available where I go.
Maybe there is a fix or a different radio fm app?
OK quick test... plugged in 3.5mm - 3.5mm jack lead into headphone socket to act as the FM antenna and started the radio, selected sound to speaker and all worked fine. switched on Bluetooth headset no sound in headset, switched off sound to speakers still couldn't hear anything. Unplugged patch lead (this ends radio anyway) played an mp3from music player and sound returned to BT headset.
So unfortunately the answer is no you can't, as soon as you plug the anything into the headphone jack it cuts out the sound to any other device.
This may well be a mechanical switch within the headphone socket and so unlikely that there's a get around in a custom rom....but then I know nothing about roms

The latest Free version of Spirit can always be found at the top of post 1 of my Q&A thread. See my sig.
My cheapest ($80) test phone gets good audio AND RDS with no antenna. Ironically it's the best of 12 operational test phones I have. It's a Samsung GT-i5500 with the great, sensitive new Broadcom 4330/20780 family of chips.
But yeah, my Galaxy S and S2 don't do very well with no antenna. My Galaxy Note does better. Haven't heard from anyone with an S3 yet. They all have the Si4709 FM chip, which has positives and negatives. Internal circuitry etc. makes a difference too.
And I can thank the very positive sales response I've had from S2 and Note owners for being able to buy these expensive devices for testing. I'll do everything I can to make Spirit run well on S3 and hope to buy one soon.
I have yet to find a phone that does FM over BT, except for a strange very low quality mode I have working on some BCM 4325 based devices.
If the FM can be done in the digital domain, instead of the more common analog, then in theory it should be possible to do FM over BT.
But then again, in theory the Galaxy S and S2 hardware are capable of FM record (digital). Yet the audio libraries don't seem to support it, and I think it'd be a major/infeasible job to hack the libraries for it.
The Note and I think the S3 can do FM record with stock audio libraries. So I think FM over BT on these devices is feasible, at least with stock ROMs and/or using stock libraries.
But on non-stock ROMs like CM9, the Note seems incapable of FM record.
Basically, if the stock ROM and stock FM app don't support FM over BT, then I think it's not EASILY possible.
If it could be made to work, there's no reason why a phone couldn't have a wired earphone plugged in at the same time that FM goes over BT. This might "confuse" the audio system though, which usually sends audio over a wired headset if one is plugged.
Then again, it's also possible to have a plug that's partly inserted (or maybe even wired creatively). Enough for antenna but not enough to push audio through the wired headset.

This dual active android phone does it: Star B79 Android 2.3.6 MTK6575 Smart 3G Phone 4.3"HD. I can not insert link cause of the ten posts limit but you can find it at aliexpress website
A colleague has it and I tried it just now and the quality is superb. And it is much cheaper comparing to the 730 Euro I gave to buy the SIII (greek retail price 32 GB version)
Actually this was the reason I switched from IOS to Android I mistakenly thought it was a default option in Android.
Also my ancient HTC diamond could do it with the help of a bluetooth utility but it woud often crash and quality was not good.

Yes.
I have one person reporting success with my app on GS3 on CM9 June 19 now.
It only works one time though, then requires a reboot for the 2nd time.
This was with an experimental release I haven't made public yet.
I hope GS3's will be coming down at least $100 over the next month. $700 is pretty darn steep, even if it's got a leg up on the One X and One XL I bought recently for 570 and 500.

That's very interesting; thanks for the info.
There are a variety of relatively inexpensive Chinese devices that have unique qualities, such as FM on an Android tablet, or digital TV tuner, or FM transmit I think.
But these devices are not widely available, or popular I think, in most Western countries. Information, source code and custom ROMs can be difficult to impossible to find.
As for Android: the audio systems can be kind of a big complicated mess. I don't think I've ever seen a single phone with an audio balance setting, among other things. But at least some Androids have "over the air" FM, whereas iPhone's have never had FM, despite years of rumors.

Kind of a drag to have a dongle hanging off though, in addition to the wired earphone for antenna.
There's been a lot of praise for the Sony MW600 Bluetooth stereo headset with built-in FM the last few years. Under $40 on EBay now.
I just ordered the apparent successor, the MW1 for $120 plus shipping the other day. It even has a music player built in, besides the FM and BT 3.0 support.
I need the A2DP headset because I think I'll be able to support FM over Bluetooth on some devices in the next few months, and I need something to test with.
MW1 seems interesting with many features but the price is ....

Not an exact solution, but you can get bluetooth headsets with built in FM radio.
eg: Sony-Ericsson-MW-600-Bluetooth-Headphones

The headphone jack has a part that senses when a headphone is inserted (the metal
in the headphone plug shorts it. It seems like you could make a plug that connects
to the metal of the ground pin (for the radio antenna) but isn't "inserted" so the phone
won't disable using BT.
Anyways, only i9300 will support FM, there is no way to get FM working with the Broadcom

I use a sony ericson bluetooth headset that has built in fm radio works well.
Model MW600havent priced them in a while,should be under $50 by now.

Is anyone aware of any mods that support bluetooth low energy. I'm really interested in getting a sports tracking wristband but every one of them requires BLE to sync to phones. I've read that android 4.3 will support it but I doubt our phones will ever see that officially.

I've been involved in that thread. It seems that the only android devices officially working with these wristbands through bluetooth are S3/S4/Note2 as Samsung has done their own work to get BLE working on these devices. Just wondering if there are any mods I'm not finding through search out there that would work on other phones.
I'm not sure what to tell you. Hopefully somebody else chimes in...
I know the up syncs thru headphone jack. I also know that the Bluetooth stack used in our phones is lacking...

No I haven't made the jump to try out that side yet(I'm pretty attached to Sense's Car Mode vs other apps lol). Possibly will when 4.3 comes out. Especially with the upgraded bluetooth stack.

I have recently bought myself an Xtrons TD730a Double Din Head Unit, I would post a link to it but unfortunately I am unable to as the forum won't let me. You should be able to find the unit in question with the help of google though.
On the whole I've been pretty happy with the device. The main downside I have discovered though is that it appears to be running a rather cut down version of Android 4.1
It is unable to communicate with my Bluetooth OBDII device, which having read through a few of the other threads on here seems to be a common issue with many of the Android Car Headunits.
The other, more annoying issue I've noticed is that when I am streaming music from my home server over 3G, it doesn't seem to support gapless playback when changing to the next track or Audio Chaining or whatever it is known as. I use exactly the same apps and set up on my LG G3 and gapless playback works fine on that.
From what I can gather, the necessary APIs to support Audio Chaining were added in to Android API Level 16 which was introduced around the time of Android 4.1 so this Headunit should support it.
I'm wondering, if the Headunit is running a rather cutdown version of 4.1, is it possible that Audio Chaining support has somehow not been added to it's supported APIs?
Is there a way I can check if this is the case? And if so, can I get them added in somehow? I'm guessing that a good place to start would be if there is a root method available for this device?
I hope it was OK to post these questions here. Please let me know if I should have posted them elsewhere.

Even though its an 7 inch screen it is the same as the AN21 head unit internally. So it doesnt support obdll over bluetooth. Try getting the wifi version that it works. Try the same rooting method as that head unit.

I was thinking about buying this model and want to make sure that the Bluetooth is able to stream my music and also make phone calls from the dash !? Is that possible with this unit ?

The watts are not listed online so does it get loud and clear or do you need an amp with this unit

Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction :good:
I've had a good read through the AN21 head unit thread. I've ended up upgrading the system software to version 2.8.3 and I've also managed to root the device.
The result is now that I am able to play my music over 3G without there being any annoying gaps between each track.
As you've mentioned, it still doesn't support OBDII over bluetooth and this does turn out to be a hardware issue rather than a software issue. In fact, the software itself does clearly support OBDII over bluetooth, it's just the hardware version of my bluetooth controller that doesn't support it.

The head unit does connect to my phone over bluetooth, I never said that it didn't. I was referring to a bluetooth OBDII adapter (for reading out diagnostic information from my car's ECU) that does not work with the head unit over bluetooth.
I've not actually attempted to make or receive any calls over bluetooth, or to stream any music via Bluetooth, but it is my understanding that the head unit does support these features.
It is probably a good idea to have a proper read through the"AN-21 U" - Unbranded 6.2" 2 DIN Pure Android 4.1 Car Stereo Radio Head Unit [ROOTED] thread available on here in the Android Development and Hacking --> Android General section as it seems as though people have had different results with regards to sound qualities depending on which software version / MCU version they are running on their unit. For what it's worth, I've left my MCU version untouched as it looked as though it was a whole different ball game to change MCU versions as apposed to simply changing the software version.
I can't remember off the top of my head what the speaker wattage outputs are, I seem to remember something around the 45X4 mark, remember those are peak ratings. I do have an amp running a sub woofer in the boot of my car but the rest of the speakers, which are just the standard speakers that were supplied with the car, are powered directly off the head unit.
I've got to be honest and say, I don't think they go as loud as they did with my previous head unit, a Sony MEX-BT3100U, so I will probably look at amping them at some point in the future, probably after replacing them with some good quality aftermarket speakers.

I've had a good read through the AN21 head unit thread. I've ended up upgrading the system software to version 2.8.3 and I've also managed to root the device.
The result is now that I am able to play my music over 3G without there being any annoying gaps between each track.
As you've mentioned, it still doesn't support OBDII over bluetooth and this does turn out to be a hardware issue rather than a software issue. In fact, the software itself does clearly support OBDII over bluetooth, it's just the hardware version of my bluetooth controller that doesn't support it.

Anyone know if it is possible to root the Xtrons TS702L or how to upgrade it ?
i need a replacement for my jaybird x2 but dont want to get the X3 now that bluetooth 5.0 is available. Or does anyone know of a good headset that will be release soon with bluetooth 5.0?
is it because your x2 doesn't work with the S8 ? because it doesn't work with mine either .

it works fine just the battery is getting old. and itll be nice to have more range with 5.0
I am also wondering if there are any Bluetooth 5.0 headphones anywhere yet. I can't find anything.
Also looking for BT 5.0. Still using the original Bluebuds x ! Battery only lasts me about 4 hours.
This is driving me nuts--there are some pretty legit reasons for wanting BT 5.0 headphones, and I don't really want to buy a replacement pair that DOESN'T have BT 5.0 because that'd be silly now that my phone supports it . . . blech. There has to be someone out there making them, right?
I searched pretty hard online this weekend and found NOTHING, not even articles/teasers of soon to be released 5.0 headsets.
I'm turning up similar amounts of nothing at all. One wonders why Samsung wouldn't be more interested in playing this up as a feature and thus driving stories about it. Maybe they're too focused on the AKG earbuds they're bundling with the phone, and the fact that the s8 has a headphone jack and the iPhone doesn't? That's my best guess . . .
BT 5.0 is pretty new. The S8 is pretty much the first phone to have it, and I believe it will take a few months until we see some better quality BT5.0 headphones on the market.
But no one's announced plans at all??? Finding the same nothing others are finding - and the silence is deafening.
FYI, X2 and X3 work just fine with the S8 and S8+.
I guess I will continue to wait. I actually really like my BT headphones, sound/battery wise, but they tend to cut out when my phone is in my pocket and I turn my head, which is just annoying.
The biggest issue with making devices that are BT 5.0 is that there is no backwards compatibility. So a set of headphones with 5.0 would not work on a device(Phone, tablet, computer,etc) that didn't come Bluetooth 5.0 capable. Sure they could add BT 4.2 to it, but that would require an additional bt radio. Increasing price and size
My Plantronics edge batteries are about shot. I'd love to buy another Plantronics edge like headset but I'll try to wait BT 5.0. Even if I weren't waiting for BT 5.0 I wouldn't buy another on the chance I'd buy a new headset that has been sitting around for 3 years.

Do you have source on this? I havent seen any articles that says it's not backward compatible. If this is true then it could be a while until any manufactures will release new headsets with 5.0 if the only device currently that can use it is the S8.
I'm not sure why you'd think they weren't backwards compatible. I've gone through every previous generation of BT and to the best of my recollection if you use a newer gen with older gen the only issue is you don't get all the benefits of the new gen but they certainly communicated with each other.

Look at the Bluetooth website. Or any other website talking about the technical specs. After I did research I tried looking up any devices that are 5.0, besides just headphones and sadly couldn't find any. 5.0 will be phenomenal, just gonna be a bit before it's implemented widespread sadly

I think you're mixing up what I'm saying. The s5 doesn't have bt5. But receiving devices that have bt5 are not backwards compatible with transmitting devices that aren't bt5. Majority of devices that transmit (phones, tablets, etc) will have bt5 and down installed in them, such as the S8, because doing that is simple. As a receiver has to implement all the things that come with higher BT qualifications and standards. Broadcasting BT is much more simple and convenient than having to receive everything connected to that signal.
I'm just relaying information from the bt5 specs though. I have not tested any of this in real world applications
