Moved to a Nexus 4, but I'm keeping my Atrix - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After the fustercluck that Motorola gave us, I decided to never again be at the end of the software update curve.
I love my Nexus 4. But, damn it, the sound sucks. I use V-Moda LP2s and it's like a 5/6 out of 10. The Atrix (with CM7.2) has louder sound, better dynamic range, and the bass is full on better! I actually realized that the Atrix is hands down the best media player I've had in a long time.
So I'm keeping it. As much as I hated to use it as a daily driver, it will serve its purpose as my music player. That is until CM10.1 is released for the Mako (Nexus 4) and I am hoping it at the very least reproduces the same sound quality as the Atrix.
Makes me wonder what the sound ship is on the Nexus 4, and on the Atrix and how they compare to each other. Anyone have any ideas?

Our Atrix has a WM9803L DAC chipset, a Wolfson model which is the same in some other nVidia T2 AP20H SoC whereas the Nexus 4 uses Qualcomm's own WCD9310 DAC chipset, also included in other S4 Pro SoC (e.g. in SGS3's US version).
I hope that it'll help you on your research.

Thanks, I appreciate that a lot.

Moved to the Nexus a while back and came around here to see what was up. Seems pretty dead.
>-Sent From Something That's From Somewhere-<

You mean internal DSPs on each phone? Nexus' speaker always used to suck but I heard nothing wrong about speakers.

Following u Soon!!

I moved forward to the SGSII a while back, but I'm still a proud Atrix owner.
Most phones I eventually sell, but my Atrix is definitely a backup keeper...

Do you mean through the speakers or the headphone jack?
I've moved across to the Lumia 920 (and love it) but the sound quality out of the Atrix does beat it, especially when connecting a headphone into the headphone jack. The speaker loudness are similar but the Atrix does sound better still. I'll too be using it to sit in my car as a music device.
I was going to get on a Nexus 4 but I don't want to support Google after the Atrix debacle. SG2 gets JB, while we're stuck on Gingerbread even though Google owns Motorola. What a joke. WP8 is much nicer to use anyway.

Didn't notice I was clear. Definitely the headphone jack. Audio is just so much better, and CM7.2 just adds that extra serving of bass and dynamic range (via the DSP) that puts the audio far into the lead.
On Stock, the Atrix ties with the iPhone 4S, but the DSP on CM7.2 is fab! Hoping to recreate this experience with other devices, but from the looks of it, the Snapdragon Pro 4 Audio Chip sucks. And this chip is on a lot of new phones, it's on that new Sony Xperia Z too.

i've always had nokia phones so the atrix was my first foray into android. i do have to say paired up with my sony mdr7506, the atrix is a pretty damn good media player, probably besting every nokia i've had.

I've enjoyed *most* of my timeline with this Atrix, except of course for the face slap Motorola gave it & stopped updates waaayyy too early. And my next potential phone is probably the N4.
Right now though I'm waiting in hopes the XDA developers manage success in building a stable Olympus ICS/JB kernel for the Atrix. If they succeed that'll probably keep me in Atrix heaven for quite a while longer

Atrix love
I really loved my Atrix HW wise, SW wise... not so much. Thank god for rooting and custom kernels!
BTW, a friend got the Atrix 2 a while back, and he swapped it for an Atrix 4G.

Hi, have you tried Atrix on CM10.1? I'm just wondering if it can get any better than CM7.2...

Sorry for the late reply. I have since moved on to a Note 3 N9005, but the audio on the Motorola Atrix running CM7.2 is still #1 for me. NONE of the CM10.1 releases replicates the audio quality of the CM7.2 release. I don't know why, but that's it in my experience. I think Ill buy another Atrix as a backup media device / phone when it really comes down in price.

Whoah! $50-$70? Where?!
At the moment it's still going for around £130 on eBay, which is the same price as a Moto G, well at least when the last time I checked that was the price!
I'll have a closer look...

Thats the cheapest price for a working A4G. I'll be picking up one myself later on this week (digitizer issues)

I picked my A4g, for around $70 with free shipping, in eBay. Running the mokee MK42 ROM. Great phone, still waiting for my sim unlock code though. Coming from a blackberry and iPhone, the sound quality is mind blowing.

Motorola Droid Razr DAC?

Hi All,
I've doing a lot of research on DAC for this phone and still cannot find an answer!?
I was going for Samsung GS2 originally, but found out it has crappy Yamaha DAC running inside. So I'm thinking getting this phone or the upcoming Nexus hoping for a better listening pleasure..
Does anyone knows what DAC is this phone using??
Thanks in advance for the replies
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola-Droid-RAZR-Teardown/7048/3 lists most internal parts for the RAZR. The phone has great audio quality for movies/music, tbh I wouldn't even worry about it.
Having both the International RAZR & GSII, RAZR trumps the SII for audio quality by a fair margin. Surprisingly, the audio 'enhancement' options that are so often terrible on phones aren't unbearable. I'd not read anything about them prior to getting the device, so their existence and decency were both nice surprises.

I've tested SGS2 vs RAZR vs ATRIX and I can say, I can't hear any really noticeable difference between RAZR and ATRIX, while SGS2 is a little crappier.
Anyway, RAZR's sound output seems good. The speaker is really, really, really loud... and with my earpiece the music experience is good. Obviously it's not comparable to my X-Fi, but anyway, hey! It's a PDA!

motorola atrix worth buying?

im thinking about buying this phone, i dont want to spend alot of money on smartphone and the atrix is pretty cheap for what he gives.
the motorola atrix worth buying?
he have any common problems?
thanks
Mine was pretty cheap, I got it for my birthday in october. I love it. The only common problem would be random reboots/sleep of deaths. There have been some "fixes" that work for people if you look around, but there are a fair amount of users who have had random reboot issues or sleep of death issues, including me. But I've managed to fix mine so I love love love the Atrix.
atrix 4g
For a cheap phone it is really good. My only complaint is the 5mp camera. To get its full potential you have to unlock the bootloader, root and install a custom rom. All the info can be found in the development section of this forum. Turls team cm7 is rock steady. I have just updated to jokersax11's cm9 and now the phone is awesome, the only thing missing is the camera does not work in this rom.
..
Were having alpha ver. of IceCream Sandwich (CM9) ... there are better phones around atm but if you think Atrix fits you then I would say its not a bad choice.
You can still buy it because it is very nice.
I bought my atrix 2 weeks ago in germany and i can't complain. Ok actually the atrix wasn't my first choice but the price of the nexus s become very high in germany so i decided to get the atrix.
And it is still a very fast phone with a nice battery and the most important fact for me is that it only has a 4" display because I have small hands and a bigger display would be to big for me.
I am happy and i saved more than 100€ compared to other high end phones like the galaxy s II or galaxy nexus.
I vote to Buy.
If you plan on modding I'm sure your are.. Your here after all. I would buy one for 250 or less. I really like mine. There are so many roms to try now. It seems even though some phones are better this phone is really well supported by a big community. Breathing more life into a phone and taking it beyound its time. Im using the SuperOSr Rom and I really enjoy it tried maybe 6 or so others.

Forgot to say the atrix has been a really reliable phone considering the amount if soft bricked it doing software flashes unsafely. I didn't know any better at the time. Not buggy like all my blackberries Ive had.
I think it is worth buying this phone, it's a lot cheaper then say a galaxy s2 and the galaxy is just a tad more powerfull, also there are some great custom roms and even a few (I think 3) ICS roms on the way!
Dont buy the atrix, buy a sensation a sgs2 or a o2x.

Lol o2x is almost the same but less ram no webtop no finger print scanner and costs more.

I am thinking about buying an Atrix and would like some input too.
Requirements are:
1. 4" Screen
2. Good battery life
3. ATT 3G Bands
4. Less that $400 on unlocked market
The phones I considered were the SE Arc, LG Optimus 2X, and Atrix 4G. Yes, I would love to own a Galaxy or Nexus phone but it is outside my price range. The Optimus 2X fell out because I cannot get it in ATT USA bands. So its the Arc vs the Atrix. Or did I miss another option?
yes - no problems
yes, it's worth it. I've had no problems with mine, the build quality is excellent on my device.
The 5mg camera is the only marginally disappointing thing but that alone would not tempt me to swap it for a SGSII.
good luck

How about the Atrix vs Nexus S?
Nexus S pluses: AMOLED, Better Camera, Better Battery life, NFC, Offical upgrade to ICS
Atrix pluses: Expandable Memory, HDMI, Faster CPU, FP Reader, 3.5G
Tough call.
You'll get what you pay for, imo. Best way to compare real market value is check ebay (BNIB on auction).
I'm sure ill be on gingerbread when similar phones will be on some next version of ics, not to mention that I got gingerbread after 6 months of purchase. I will never buy motorola android phone again, but that is just my personal experience.

I can't blame you either. I have always been a Motorola fan from the ROKR (not RAZR) line (anyone remember the Apple collaboration with Moto?) and I owned an E2. But I think it is poor on Motorola's part that the Defy is stuck on Froyo, while the pratically identical Defy+ got Gingerbread on launch. Motorola seems to be keeping certain brands going (Milestone/Droid, Defy, Atrix) so the should keep them updated as far as they can physically go.
Battery and ICS might sway me into getting the Nexus S but I do love the more powerful Atrix.
It's a great phone but the camera really kills it, other than that it's awesome.
I personally love my Atrix. The camera is a slight bit disappointing but it definitely makes it up with versatility and functionality. Just my opinion

i choosed phone for about 1 year. because haven't more money, but i want a "power" phone, which can work for about 4 years without problem with hardware. i bought Atrix 4g. this is my first android phone, but it really nice for this price.
In the end of 2011 year i choose between atrix 4g, Defy+ and nexus prime. but nexus prime have bigger display, it is thinner than atrix, but have big price.
Defy+ is wonderfull, water resist, dust resist and any more... but haven't dual core, and only 512 ram.
resume (for me):
if i have more money i bought nexus prime, but i think that ideal phone can not cost more than $ 400 must have the hardware with a view of the future (1 year minimum). Should work just fine navigating large maps (map RUSSIA really great, and requires a lot of memory the laying of complex routes). Should be easily unlockable and be able to flash the android ICS (СM9 in my case). gave me a chance to practice in programming for Android.
Atrix gives me all these opportunities. Overclocking the CPU to 1.5GHz making foundation for the future, the performance he ahead of SGS2 and is not as great. Support for memory cards - I have no problems with the backup, you can always place another increase.
so that at the moment, I suggest taking Atrix 4g. But the choice is always yours.

Wow! How can you fix your SoD problem in Atrix?
I tested a lot of radios, kernels and roms without sucess. Can you tell me?
Thanks
Other than having a slight less capable camera, I love the Atrix!
Something to also note (that I love) is that it has a qHD resolution 4" display, which means it's pixel density is much higher than most of the other Android phones.

Do a little xda or google search to find a lot of SoD desperated users.
It's impossible to know what app (or kernel or rom etc) is the root cause, because many ones has many different configuration, use many differents apps etc.
My problem is more related to Data Connection, even 3G or Wifi. Every time I turn off a data connection my device get's SoD.
At now I'm testing LoadMonitor app as a SoD avoid app, and it make me happy. Let's do another test before advice them to other ones.
Thanks

Much love for my Razr (XT910)

I can't believe people get on here and bag Moto and the Razr...my XT910 is the BEST phone I've ever owned. I've had it 2 weeks now coming from Atrix 4G and this phone pisses all over the Atrix.
Some of my experiences:
Call quality is the best for any phone I've ever used. I rang a lady at work today and it was like she was sitting on my lap whispering into my ear (not that we do that at work!). The call quality on Moto phones is renown, but this is something else.
I've only rooted the phone and am still on GB (more patient than most on here) and the build quality is awesome as well. No lag at all and with moderate use I'm taking it off charge 7am and putting it back on the charger 10pm with 30%+ still on the clock. I do use Battery Defender though.
The phone is sickly thin and fits into your pocket way better than any phone I've used in the past. Sometimes when I grab it I can't get a hold of it it's so thin.
If I had a gripe or 2 it would only be the position of the on/off button on the top right side followed by the volume keys below it...like volume keys at the top right and on/off at the top of the phone. Also the loudspeaker is not very loud, but that's been a trend with Moto since I got rid of my Z6 which was a music monster, last truly loudspeaker Moto did, or at least of the phones I've owned.
But the Razr is a top quality phone. I kinda get sick of hearing ppl bagging Moto on these forums as if you don't like them, don't buy them and dont' come on here trolling in our forums.
Oh, and I can wait for ICS, just enjoying GB for the time being.
While many agree with your points on the hardware... you can't come in here after owning your phone for two weeks and tell us to back off Motorola.
Some of us have had our phones (like myself) since launch day. And we were supposed to get ICS soon after launch and supposedly an unlocked boot loader before the end of the year.
It is now over 8 months later and neither of those things have come. Some people have now gotten ics, but some are still waiting. Even those of us who pre ordered the phone.
Moral of the story... new guy to the party shouldn't really bash on those who have been being lied and placated to for almost a year. Just saying.
Love the phone. Hate the games we're playing with this company.
And welcome.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
I fully agree with you here. I bought a Razr for $50 less than the cost of an equivalent galaxy s2. I had to fix the wifi on my friend's galaxy s2 yesterday and I could not believe how laggy it was compared to the Razr; even with ICS installed.
I'm not really the new guy to the party...as I said I've had moto phones since Z6. If you buy a phone waiting for u/l bootloader and s/w upgrades, good luck.
I thought ppl came to XDA so they didn't have to WAIT for phone s/w updates?
Well we were promised ics from the beginning, so its perfectly normal that we are upset that the updates aren't out yet.
To make things worse, it seemed to be delayed.
Imagine walking around an office where everyone has a Korean Android phone running ics, though it is 4.0.3, and we will be getting 4.0.4, I became the only guy still on gb.
Also, why is out that Samsung is able to come out with non branded ics faster than branded ics whereas moto comes out with branded ics first, with the exception of latam and China taxes, which I do not under stand how hard our different out can be to fine out Asian or European ics for xt910.

With ICS the phones feels like new again, believe me. I know that some of you have not tried it yet but when you try ICS you never want to go back to GB again
I love my razr, I think it's the best phone I can have..
The design just fit for what I'm searching for, the cores and the memory ram works perfect, I love my razr like it's my own baby.
But, as much as I love my razr, I hate Motorola, I just want to hunt them down... My hate running through my veins..

As you can tell I've got a DHD but I'm thinking of going over to the Moto side after over 18 months of HTC goodness. Been thinking of an Atrix but seeing as the RAZR has also has webtop it piques my interest.
Having to put up with waiting for updates and that "your phone isn't powerful enough" is something I'm used to.
If its worth getting, then I'm going all in, if not I'm still tempted by an Atrix and the accessories that are now at a more reasonable discounted price.

[Q] Do you still advice buying HTC Amaze?

Hi,
I am looking for a phone with a decent camera(5/8 MP) with NFC and FM.
Budget is around 300$ (~ 18K INR)
I will be using it as my primary device, so need a device with stable rom with no show stopper bugs.
Amaze owners what do you say about this device?
Is it still worth buying this device or is there any alternatives.
If you can get it under 200 then sure. I bought this phone for nostalgic feelings.
Also I believe its the last device that has SD Card and removable batteries. Its average, the battery life I mean.
All the best and stable ROMs are mostly stock ICS. Sadly the NFC/Beam doesn't work with sharing or beaming pictures. Not a show stopper but good to know.
Dev has come a long way, a working version of CM10 and CM10.1 with a few glitches. Like bluetooth, volume not working speaker and some echo. But otherwise it's something. Hell, I came from G2X as one of my old devices and Amaze has it better in this department. Believe me.
Camera is very good. But not so good on low light situations. Stick with Stock.
Again I have this device mainly because of nostalgia. I love HTC hardware. My very first phone was HTC. Just pains me that they can't get a decent flagship device to stand up against Samsung.
Pains me to say but if you want a budget device under 300 that is still kick a$$ its Galaxy S2 or Galaxy S3. I used my GS2 for pics on my last trip. Did very amazing job. My main device is Nexus 4. Terrible camera, like really, especially in low light.
If you can grab HTC Amaze under 200 and great condition, just go for it. Don't expect the front facing camera to be perfect because it isn't. Dust gets under it and there is no way to get it out. Look for that before you buy it, I didn't notice it until i got home. Not a show stopper but it really annoys me.
For now Stock>CM10.1 just because of bugs need to be cleared. Idk, its your call. I use this phone regularly. Don't pay more than 200 its not worth it.
$300 is the perfect value for this phone. If you're heavy into modifications and ROMs then I recommend sensation since there is more development. The Amaze has a beyond decent camera. It is really clear.

Thanks for the great review. I was considering if I should flash a custom rom or stay with stock. With what I use it for I think it will be safer to stay with stock. I'd like to add that I paid $10 to send my Amaze back to HTC to get the dust cleaned up. Also, I learned that FM radio for Amaze is not in the CM roms.
My HTC Amaze is merely one year old yet it's showing signs of age. (SD card ejects by itself for no reason, I think the slot is loose) Stock rom is still on ICS but SGS2 is already on 4.1 and may get 4.2. It's ironic because my first smartphone is Behold 2 and I defected to HTC because Samsung denied any 2.x updates to SGS2 although the hardware really could support it. I'm quite upset HTC is playing the same game so I would not buy their flagship HTC One now and get thrown under the bus in 6 months.
The best deal is either Nexus 4 or Nexus 5(if it comes out) but in my local area they are selling HTC DNA for 250-350, S2 and S3 from $200-$300. Therefore I think $300 for HTC Amaze is really too much. If I were to sell it in a good condition it should worth about $200-$250(if like new condition).
I bought one on swappa.com for 150 bucks for my cousin 2 days ago with all accessories and original box perfect screen and very light signs of use on the housing, hence I find 300 to be ridiculous for the amaze. Heck u can buy htc one x for 225 on swappa...

Spirit fm works! It's a great stand alone radio app. And the new aokp port by Jeeper's has most everything working!
If I could go back in time I would have an sgs3.

Hey there tutysara!
If you like HTC and can get this device for 200 or less I would go for it. Don't buy for more than 200 since that would be over paying for something no longer supported by HTC.
If you like ICS then you'll be happy with your purchase. If you like jb then a Samsung or nexus would be better for you.
Camera quality is amazing on here btw.
Bluetooth won't work on sense 4 roms hopefully it will be fixed soon.
Hope you get something you like.

Like pretty much everyone else has said under 200 is a good deal.
The amaze is still my daily phone and i love it. Loving the AOKP alpha that was just released.
I'd definitely recommend this phone for under 200.

Happy to see the progress on the new AOKP build.
I had deferred the purchase to next month due to the dollar exchange rates.
As others have suggested I am also looking for deals on S2 and Nexus devices.
I will also monitor the developments with AOKP.

Will Your Next Phone Be Another HTC?

Gotta say...I'm pretty torn on whether I'll get another HTC. I love the screen of the DNA. I love the build quality (it feels high end). But the audio quality of phone calls on Bluetooth is the worst I've ever heard on any phone. Also, Qi wireless charging clearly has major issues for many of us. And once again, they're terrible with updates. Oh...and battery is horrible. Camera is fine, but not great.
I came from The Thunderbolt and at the time I swore I'd never get another HTC, but I caved and gave them another shot, because they promised they were turning themselves around. Now, while I love my DNA in some ways, I hate it in others.
So, here we go again. I'm seeing these leaked pics of the HTC M8, and it seems like a dream phone. I want it. But I'll feel like a fool if I get burned again. There's also of course the S5 that we still have to see and a successor to the G2. Both of those historically have awful build quality (cheap cases), but great everywhere else. It'll be a tough call, but I might have to take lower build quality for a more reliable phone.
Anyone agree, disagree? I imagine if your DNA has been rock solid for you, you'll disagree. But others...
They are no longer horrible with updates. I don't think your assessment is fair.
The HTC One is already getting KitKat. That is staggering!
You may not think the DNA is getting the love it deserves, but give credit where it's due. They didn't have to give the DNA Sense 5, but they did.
I would buy another HTC phone in a heartbeat.
Build quality on Samsung phones is getting better, but they still feel like cheap toys compared to HTC phones.

Guess we just disagree there. It's good on The One, but that's just a single phone. The DNA was still being sold just this past fall and as far as I can tell they are doing the bare minimum for it. My gripes more come from the Bluetooth phone call quality, horrible battery life, and Qi wireless charging issues anyway though. I love the phone in every other aspect though. I mean...it's gorgeous.
I'm with you on the battery life, but my Bluetooth sound quality has been fine. It varies slightly depending on which ROM I'm on, but it's never been what I would consider 'bad'.
Maybe your vehicle's stereo system needs a firmware update? Just putting that out there because I have a Clarion NX501 Multimedia head unit with Nav/DVD/etc... and they have put out a few firmware updates that have fixed/improved things like that.

Interesting. I almost wonder if maybe my phone is just broken. I went from an aftermarket Pioneer AVIC headunit, to a Nissan factory and it was bad in both. Like so bad I'll often have to put headphones on so that the other person can understand me. Other phones sound good on those stereos. I switch roms a lot too, but the issue remains. Definitely possible my phone is just defective.
Again though...I do love the DNA...but I'm getting a new phone because I need these other features to work better, so I'm just concerned about getting the M8, even though it too looks gorgeous. I think it depends on what the S5 looks like. I won't tolerate a physical home button
I'm getting a m8

Well, if there's developer support, that definitely plays a huge roll. Honestly, I could care less if there's official updates. I just want Stock Android with Gapps and GravityBox anyway.
Well, all these updates for the One have provided great bases for all the new DNA ROMs, so updates are definitely important.

I've been wondering that actually. Obviously the official updates affect the Sense Roms and the GPE roms. Does it affect AOSP or Cyanogen based roms though? What about kernel development...are updates important to that?
Yup hate apple hate Samsung don't really care for moto, lg is too new for me to consider. I don't plan on leaving HTC anytime soon

Yeah...truth be told, Samsung isn't even a consideration unless they go with on-screen buttons or go with 3 capacitive that includes a recent apps button (like the DNA). Otherwise, it's out. I'm hesitant with LG because I fear a lack of developer support. But I think the G2 community is pretty active, so it gives me hope. The G2 feels so cheap though, even though it's high end.

My wife has one of the new Droid Maxx's. I hate to say it, but I feel like there would be marital issues if she was an Apple hipster
Sense has developed into a really clean and intuitive environment. I just love it!

I just can't stand apple and samsung because they have so many fan boys who think their products are superior to everything else when they clearly aren't. I had samsung for 2 years and I hated it. I've had my dna for more than a year and I still feel the same about it since the first day I used it. I love the dna so much. When I upgrade I will be staying on board with HTC for sure.

I hope the next generation of the HTC One has a 5-5.5" display, better battery, and a radio that can pick up Verizon's newer frequency band.
Probably not my build quality hasn't been great. Almost on cue right after the warranty goes the usb jack fails, and it's a hardware issue I tried everything. Also one of those thin red aluminum strips on the side just fell off. Occasionally says "new sim" but that has been mostly corrected and not a big deal. The phone functions great but probably won't buy HTC again, and if I do I'll insure it.
The droid X I had before looks like it's been through a war and has never had a single issue.
Droid X was a great phone.

Yeah just seems like a dinosaur now. Lol. Of my small circle it seems Apple (Lol) and Motorola are solid. Don't like IOS, Android much superior, although I was given a Ipad 4 retina as a birthday gift and for reading books and surfing its nice I must admit. I wish Android would come out with a large tablet on that level, heres to crossing my fingers that the HTC NExus tablet will be that. Not to get off track though, if I was gonna buy today I'd get a Nexus 5.
Nope because I just switched to a Moto X. Didn't really have any major issues with the DNA (wireless charging always worked fine for me) but I always thought it was awkward to hold. A little too big for me and the power button on top was a pain to reach. I've also always liked Moto devices. Like someone mentioned above, my Droid X was a tank and is still going strong to this day (as an alarm clock). The Moto X is very similar in size and feel.
