Can the SGS2 play at 1080p? When I'm playing a film with MX player and the custom DTS codec, the TV reports that it is set to 1080i, not p. Is there a way to force it to do 1080p? Would switching to CM from the leaked JB rom make a difference?
You connected it through mhl? The mhl adapter is original samsung? You can try to change to official ics and play movie with stock player.

It is one of the first devices to offer a Mobile High-definition Link (MHL),[10] which allows up to 1080p uncompressed video output to an MHL enabled TV or to an MHL to HDMI adapter, while charging the device at the same time.

It's not official Samsung, but it does seem to be working (meaning there is a picture except it's full HD 1080p). Why would it make a difference? I'll try ICS. Can I dual-boot both stock ICS and stock leaked JB?
You cant dualboot leaked xxlsj with any other rom. I will try to connect my phone with original samsung adapter to 46' fullhd led tv and play some 1080p movies. I have lsj based rom and i check there is 1080p or 1080i.

My tv showed 1080 30p so its 1920x1080 30fps progressive video. In system and in movie it was the same parameters. So if your tv does support 1080p it's problem with your mhl adapter, hdmi cable, or software in your phone. I'm running on disaster rom v6 lsj 4.1.2 based with syiah kernel v6beta4

I doubt it says 30fps, TVs don't usually report the fps. I think it's referring to the hz i.e. 30hz, or half 60hz, which indicates that it is 1080i. I could be wrong, but I think I'm not. Does your TV clearly indicate what the hz setting or the p or i setting is?
*bump*
I never really got to the bottom of this, can anyone tell me what they're getting?

Hey,
i just got my MHL cable today and tested some of my 720p vids (~5Mbit highprofile) and i think that on my tv it doenst play as smooth as on the s2 itself.
Is it possible that the hdmi output is somehow slow or lagging ? Has someone
tested mhl yet?
regards
I have the same problem with every video file, no mater the video quality. What cable do you have? Samsung genuine?
firstly which firmware you have. secondary did you test other non-stock players?
for me is working with geniue and non-geniue (have two MHL cables) cables with no video lag...
in which format is movie?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I have genuine samsung one and it works perfectly.
I am watching 1080p video files with x264 codec and also experience lag, not a huge lag but the kind of lag that once you know its there makes you notice it (it skips a frame every now and then)
I have tried several players, but it seems the HDMI output completely ignores the display that the 3rd party players provide (mxvideo, dice video), and instead gives you the same playback video that you get from playing the video from within the gallery.
I.e. the display on the phone is not the same as on the TV - subtitles are not displayed, image size is always with borders, color settings are not respected.
I have an original Samsung MHL adapter, but not one specifically designed for the galaxy s2 (I just went to a local store and bought one).
Has had someone success with 1080p Movies (I'm referring to ~6-10gb full 1080p rips, split in 4gb chunks)? - They play back without a hickup on the phone, just not on the tv.
Thanks!
EDIT: I'm on stock 2.3.4 gingerbread firmware
I've seen some nice videos on Youtube from Sony Ericsson promoters displaying Xperia Neo devices HDMI-wired to large TVs and it looks good with photos and videos shot from the in-built camera. But I'd like to hear from your experience playing movies, not stuff you filmed on your camera.
Is it possible to watch HD movies from the SD card on the TV through the HDMI? Does the Neo plays most format to begin with? Does is play any decent format at all with subtitles? Has anyone tried this?
yeah you can watch 720p movies so you can also watch that through hdmi
I know I could watch 720p videos, what I don't know about is compatibility, performance, and if it takes special video playback software. The examples I've seen were with specially tailored mp4 videos. Some HD videos come in AVI or MKV... does anyone know if this would be a problem with the Xperia Neo?
---------- Post added at 01:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:09 PM ----------
By the way, I didn't see a single video player installed on the Xperia Neo I tested on the store. I might have missed it. On the video examples I've seen they use the standard gallery app.
I played .avi video files using MoboPlayer. I think that using third party video players you can play .mkv too (did not test it)

Cool! HD video? What about performance?
Also, anyone ever used subtitles?
I have the neo and just got my hdmi cable. Have yet to test this either so would like to know as well. Don't have a tv with hdmi yet though. So can't test myself.

I'm gonna get the Neo soon (its only just come out in N.Z shops) I was able to get my hands on one today to feel the build quality and I like it..
I was wondering if the HDMI port also works for the normal phone screen.. What I'm really after is to be able to plug the phone into a hotel LCD screen to write e-mails browse the web etc with a BT keyboard... some phone only seem to be able to play videos and look at photos over the HDMI port.. how is the Neo??

Awesome! that's all I needed to know.. now to find a cheap Neo.. to replace my trusty but severely modified mini.. HD Video and Skype video calling here I come!!

hdmi cable works with video with not higher resolution than 720p (tested with diceplayer and mx video player soft decoding, hardware does not support divix or mkv)
with software decoding i tried to play Full HD 1080p and did it, but it wasn't smooth, and video and sound was not synchronized.
Tested on not modified Neo. I would be very pleased if someone tested the same on overclocked device and say if it helped.
Oh okay, will have to test this myself as well, wonder if overclocks do help or maybe it wasn't smooth because of the software?, or both... we need more testers of hdmi, speaking of which, my cable came the other day, but left it at home, which at the moment is close to 2 hours away so can't test it this weekend any-way.
My neo finally arrived and I took it for some serious video testing.
Anything going on the neo goes on the TV through HDMI, be it video or game or app, or anything. Now to video performance.
I tried several different resolutions and file formats:
- Apparently the native app will only run mp4 and 3gp.
- Using MX Video Player I got full compatibility with all file formats and subtitles I tried (with different encodings too).
- File formats I tried: avi (I think it was xvid), flv, mp4, wmv, mkv (it says x264 here), mpg.
- Resolutions I tried: several up to 720p (sorry, I don't have access to anything larger)
The thing ran all 720p mp4 videos flawlessly. Other formats, the best it could do was run a 540p flv very well. 720p videos of other formats ran choppy and slow.
I converted the 720p film (6000 kbps bitrate) I had here to a 720p mp4 (5000 kbps bitrate just to improve file size). It ran flawlessly. Now am converting my films to that size and format when I want to watch them on the tv.
I'm loving the phone, it's very snappy and does the job.
I tried some 1080p mp4 videos. They run choppy too. It'd be pointless though, since the HDMI output from the neo is 720p anyway.
So, apparently, anything above 720p is off-limits with the original firmware.
Youtube on Neo --> TV out via HDMI?
Can you open the youtube application on your phone, then watch it on your TV through HDMI from your Neo?

I'll try this at home, but my guess is that you can do this normally, as anything that goes on the phone (you can play 3D games and watch them on the TV for example).
The drawback is that the video quality of Youtube videos on the phone is not HD, even if you turn on the "HQ" button.
I charged at same time as using hdmi big mistake cooked phone won't do that again

So I finally got ext2 SD Micro cards working thanks to this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184767
This allowed me to test playback with my largest mkvs. What I found shocked me.
My largest 1080p mkvs play back perfectly on our phone. Smooth as silk.
The only issue is that tracks with DTS give no sound in the default player, so I invested in Dice Player that completely fixed this issue. Dice Player works well with the MHL cable so I am able to play the 1080p mkvs on my TV at 1080p.
This phone really is a dream!
I use my xbmc server to stream 720p mkv's with no problem here. Love it!

+2 for Dice Player. Ever other paid player should go out of business or add HW support. FFmpeg software decoding is getting OLD

Thanks to the OP. good info here.
Have any of you guys tried playing a video on YouTube (through Firefox+flash side loaded) at the Original (the one above 1080p) level?
I've tried recently, and the result was that firefox crashed and i had to send an error report, then shortly after the tablet reboots.
If someone knows more please share the info.

even if you could play the 4K videos through youtube the N10 cant play them smooth.
4K res videos on the N10 is only around 12fps.
still waiting to be able to OC the GPUs 2D mhz that handles the HW decoding
max res for videos that the N10 can handle at stable 23.9 fps is 1440p(2560x1440)
so what you could do and what i have done with amazing result is to download the "Original" video from youtube at keepvid
save them on your PC and encode and resize them to 2560x1440
search for user "jacobschwarz" on youtube
those videos are amazing in 1440p!

I'm 100% sure it was 1440p. It might have been slow because of the lack of optimisation of the flash player. I think what you are talking about are h/w accelerated 1440p videos played from the device itself; those probably play much better than the ones streamed from YouTube.
