I have been reading/googling for a solution to this problem. I have flashed Eclipse 2.3 with proper 2.3.5/418 and have lost the use of my home and search hard keys. This has happened to me before when I flashed CM10 with the wrong gapps. I have tried reflashing Eclipse 2.3 but to no avail. I have also tried the button remapper apk and keynumbertracker apk to try and remap the keys. All buttons give a reading except the home and search buttons. any help would be awesome without having to reflash/sbf back to stock 2.3.4/5.
Thanks a bunch.
EDIT** I did a factory data/cache wipe and that seemed to fix the problem.

Apologies in advance for being such a n00b.
I'm currently running CM7 RC1.1 with the MR2 radio on my rooted TBolt.
Heard lots of good things about BAMF 3.0 and thought I'd give it a try.
Did a complete wipe. Installed. Immediately after boot, things started going wrong. Lots of crashes even before I could sign into my Google Acct, VZW appeared briefly and went away altogether, and I couldnt connect to any wifi network.
Tried a few reboots. Reflashed the MR2 radio. Did a complete reset. Still no success.
I'm back on CM7 now but very keen on trying BAMF. Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?

Did you flash BAMF from ROM Manager or Recovery. Don't flash from ROM Manager. Flash it directly from the recovery. Also try wiping multiple times.
I did flash from recovery. Will try multiple wipes this time. Just to be clear, which selection in recovery is the proper one for a complete wipe?
Thanks for the idea!

Its Wipe Data/Factory Reset. There's also Wipe Cache Partition. And under advanced there's a Wipe Dalvik Cache. Make sure you Nandroid(Backup)!!!!
Btw if you don't know how to navigate in recovery menu, its volume button to scroll and the power button to select
Up and running. Thanks!
I installed Cyanogenmod 7 a week ago, and everything was pretty much working fine.
Randomly today, all 4 of the soft buttons stopped working in the middle of me using my phone. I believe I was checking scores on an NFL app. Regardless, reapplying the CM7 zip didn't fix it. I tried factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache. Nothing.
Decided to try to reroot. Reapplied ED05, which is what I did before I installed CM7. Got back to essentially factory... soft buttons still don't work. Reinstalled CM7... took, but soft buttons won't work.
I thought I read somewhere that this is an issue with gapps, but I can't seem to find that page or people discussing it again. Installing gapps again didn't work.
I'm willing to get my phone back to it's most basic level, and even erase the SD card if I need to, but not sure how to clear my phone moreso than my reverting back to ED05.
Thanks for your input guys.
Also, I had reinstalled my apps using Titanium, but not the app data. Again, everything was just fine for a week.
Also, having done a bunch of flashing and what not, I dont' know what happened, but now when I long press the power button, the menu comes up. When I try to use volume up/down to navigate to power off, all I get is volume going up and down
So, i know this thread is sort of dead, but this happened to my fascinate a while back with a version of CM7 mtd (55 maybe?)... I'm fairly convinced that the sensors for the buttons (and the lights for that matter) are completely shot, but I can't really test that. I have flashed back to stock, re-rooted it,and done everything I can think of to fix it.
You probably messed the phone up for good... my advice (if you haven't already done it): get a new phone.
I've noticed that when I revert back to stock ED05, and flash CM7 on top of that, it doesn't work right. minor to major glitches appear...
What i did was flash back to stock ED05, then ran the update to Gingerbread EH03... Then flashed CM7 with Glitch v13 kernel. seemed to fix a lot of my issues.
idk if this helps or it's just a flook, but just sayin...
Will try this out

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm having the same issues as the OP with failing soft keys after flashing through CM7 to an android 4.1 based ROM, Paranoid Android. Is the Glitch kernel built into Cyanogenmod 7 or did you load it separately?

If you are already on ICS just wipe cache and dalvik cache and flash. If not just flash up to ICS and flash kernel with ROM (same cwm session). You may want to do some reading in that thread first to make sure you get right version for your ROM.

Hi everyone,
I ran into some trouble by upgrading Cyanogenmod 7.1.0 to the latest ICS 4.0.3
Alpha Relase from codeworkx (Build 02122012; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410400).
After upgrading, I noticed the menu and back button are not receiptive to
touch any more and dont work. The background light of the two buttons still
shines. But when I hit either of them nothing happens. The home butten works
though.
While upgrading to ICS 4.0.3 I also upgraded the modem version to XXLPB
Modem (just in case, it matters).
To fix the issue, I tried to go back to Cyanogenmod 7 again, but strangely, here
the buttons dont work now anymore either. I am lost.
Does anyone have a clue, what happend? Its really hard to use Android without
any menu and back button (I installed the virtual button app to have at least
on screen buttons).
Robert
Try to make a clean install of a custom rom through recovery(no AOSP)... If this doesn't help, try to flash an official gingerbread firmware using ODIN....

If your home button doesn't work after ICS ugrade..
If your home button doesn't work after ICS ugrade..
please do it.
1) You must do rooting.
2) install "Root Explorer" application.
3) run "Root Explorer"
4) go to "/efs/imei".
5) you have to make "keystr" file
6) just write down it "ON"
- please use capital "ON" ... not "on"
7) save and rebooting
8) enjoy
I installed several official Firmware ROMs via Odin. Since I got my phone from Vodafone, I used the official Vodafone ROMs. Unforunately without success. The update process went fine (although some ROMs produced bootloops after update), the menu and back button still dont work.
It kind of seems they are physically broken. But how, I cannot explain. Or could it still be a software issue?

Well, the home button does work. Its the menu and back button who dont.
I had a look at the keystr file anyway. Its there and it already contains "ON". Still no function...

Shouldn't full wipe and installation of an official rom be sufficient? How would rooting and installing a custom rom again be of additional use to make the buttons work?

Your basic problem is you have installed Alpha and Beta roms and have lost buttons .
Probability is its software not hardware .Custom roms are of no use .
You need to wipe the lot and determine if its hardware or firmware .
....................................
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Still problems use usb jig to set rom counter to zero .
Return to service centre .
jje
If nothing is left to do yet with the possibility of Odin rootet firmware.
Of course, the best 3 piece set ...
I guess I am out of luck and have to send the phone to repair.
All the phone wipes and re-flashes with various custom and official roms (tried 1 part and 3 part roms; also with re-partitioning in odin) didnt fix the buttons.
I guess the phone really is broken.
Thanks for your replies.
i have the similiar problem but my home button works but my back button doesnt. it has actually switched and my home button has been doing the functions of the back button and the back button does nothing. it lights up to touch but no haptic feedback or functions. i tried the steps listed above with writing the script to ON and rebooted and still same issue. worked fine until i flashed the rootbox aokp ics rom. only thing i havent done to try to fix it is to factory reset and re-install rom. any suggestions on another alternative?

Yes it looks like your already have, but go to the AT&T Galaxy S II (SGH-I777) forum to get ROMs and such. This is the forum for the GT-I9100. A different model phone.
The two phones are very close, but there are differences, such as the i777 having 4 capacitive buttons, and the i9100 having only 2 with 1 hardware button.

Who are you asking?
Hi, I apparently don't have access rights to post in the dev thread yet. I've unlocked/rooted w/ Hasoon's AIO kit (thanks!).
Since have installed the Elegancia 2.2 ROM and got stuck flashing the Rosie menu button remap in the TWRP recovery image.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2025092
I have installed a couple of times now, and wiped cache and davlik cache to no avail.
Any ideas how to get a remap of the menu buttons to I can get to program settings in my apps?
Thanks.
Hi cuhead,
During the Elegancia Aroma installation you were asked to pick up (or not) the menu option (that removes the 3 dots). So you have to select it.
Then go to Elegancia Add-ons where you will find Rosie mods. Select the one you like/want: landscape capable with oe without menu, etc...
Then go to Settings, gestures and buttons, button recent application and select the option in the middle.

Steve - thanks. As it turned out I did have the install files loaded correctly, didn't realize the gesture button settings in the OS.
All works well now.
Thanks again, case closed.

My soft keys stopped working on me out of the blue. So I setup lmt and pie and was able to use that for my back and home buttons. Well now that stopped working for no reason. I was on infection when this happened. I've tried clearing cache on lmt with no luck also tried another Rom with no luck either. Any ideas would be awesome. I have no clue what else to try. Thanks.

For your soft keys not working this is a mass majority issue on multiple (more than 100 i know that) htc rezounds as its just faulty hardware from manufacturer....ive always used ultimate dynamic navbar without an issue....clearing cache wont help you...just make sure you didnt flash anything with amon ra as this can cause bugs (use twrp), obviously make sure your rooted and flashed the rom/kernels properly and that you read the original posts (Main posts for that rom) thorouhly and read what is recommended especially for your current setup such as hboot and radios....some are a little out of date but give the best general idea plus i can always tell you whats up to date
