Sansung warranty information for Galaxy Note - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hi I purchsed a galaxy note from ebay and the screen is dead on it. The phone has warranty on it. I bought the device from the seller and he told he has purchased this device in June 2012. Since I purchased this device, can I call samsung service and say the screen is dead. No water damage or flash. It has stock ROM. I am thinking this is a mother board issue. Will I be able to say this device is owned by me and get a free replacement?Do I need to produce the bill or any other information? Will samsung ask any other information?

Just call Samsung and tell them you are the second owner. The warranty is on the phone, not the owner.
Please don't post anything else on xda about this if you bought the phone with the goal of tricking Samsung (fraud).

I don't want to do any fraud. But want to know if samsung asks for any sales receipt or comparable proof of sale showing the original date of purchase.

I think you're pretty safe claiming the warranty, because this model isn't a year old yet. Just call Samsung repair center. You can google that. Several members have said it was quick and painless.

I can see where it might sound like he was accusing people of fraud, but
to me I think his point is valid in that he was being helpful but making sure everything was on the up and up. I did read the OP in such a way that it sounds like it was purchased knowing the screen was bad because if I had got a note with a dead screen from eBay, assuming it was unknown to me when I purchased it, I'd probably take it up with the seller. But if the OP bought it full well knowing the screen was bad in the hopes in getting Samsung to fix it, it could seem a little fishy. Just my take on it.

Wow. I've seen some people go off half cocked before, but you need to get a grip. You are so off base with your accusation about what Ranger said that it is laughable. Take a look at all of this posts, and I mean all of them. He is uniformly polite and helpful and he has orders of magnitude more posts than you do to demonstrate his helpfulness.
I would suggest that you rein it in cowboy and perhaps drink less coffee or whatever stimulant you drank before posting.

The OP PM'd me for more discussion, so I'm sure I didn't offend him.

Good work ranger ...as always...g

"Public Warning" Epilogue

I'm going to post this here because this is essentially where it all started, so I figure it's fitting.
This is basically an "Ending" to everything that happened on this thread Public Warning, Jaywan is Untrustworthy which is still up, but currently locked. I decided not to ask to have it opened again because I didn't want the chance for anything to be changed in that thread. Things got interesting at Page 30, and then started getting odd around the end. (Panda lol's)
In that thread I explained how my friend, and later 2 other people came forward stating that a phone being sold by a dev here was not shipped, and all communications stopped as soon as he received the money from each person. His explanation was that he went on vacation and left the shipping up to someone else. Page 28 he made an appearance, but, in my opinion, handled the comments from everyone else very poorly. by making threats of lawsuit, Tasteless jabs at the situation, and even an admission of insurance fraud
So, that is a recap of that thread... Oh, and did I mention Polar bears?
Here is how it all ended. Rugedraw was the only one that opted to go through with the purchase of "one" of the 3 he said he was selling. This is the message Rugedraw sent me on it's arrival "Hey, man.....I received the package today. The phone is as described. Boots up fine and has a 2.3.5-based Sense 3.5 rom on it. It even came included with an OEM HTC soft rubber case. I called Sprint and verified that the ESN is clean and the phone can be activated.
I have to say: I am 100% satisfied with the phone.
Who would of thought that last week, huh?"
So, he got what he paid for. But after everything, my friend and Faugnom1 weren't interested in possibly getting jerked around anymore and simply opted to have their money returned. Which Jaywan said in the thread he would do.
Paypal was never contacted by him on neither case. On Dallas's case, he had until Nov. 8th to respond or Paypal would rule in Dallas's favor. Which they did, He has had his money returned BY Paypal. faugnom1's case required a response on the 10th. This is what faugnom1 sent me:
faugnom1:"He said he would pay me by today, the same day my paypal thing is up. So if I dont hear from him in a few hours ill finalize the case.
Me:Did you just go thru withthe PayPal dispute?
faugnom1:Yeah never heard from him again after that one day. Paypal ruled in my favor.
So, Paypal disputed in both Dallas's and faugnom1's favor and they were both repaid.
on a personal note:Thank you to the community, the support was tremendous and I tried not to make it a witch hunt, and I know some Mods look down on this type of posting, but I felt it was being ignored and the post did bring 2 more people in who had the exact same thing happen. If everything is quietly handled, it allows the person to do it again, and then after that, maybe getting banned. If it's brought into the light I believe it serves the community better. If this happened to me, I went on vacation and left it all up to someone, I would feel horrible and give out as much info as possible. I don't want people to think I'm dishonest went I am not. It's not a matter of "IDGAF!!" it's a matter of "that's not who I am and I'll clear my name".
I'm baffled on how his account hasn't been banned (disabled and reenabled 2 times though). While, sure, this may have been all some big misunderstanding by some miracle of coincidences. Other members have been perma-banned for less. He made threats in a thread that was deleted by mods, made light of the situations, and was very combative and offered no forward explanation to anyone involved, only stating "if they want an explanation they can PM me" for someone who took 3 peoples money and then lost all contact with them, coming back with that attitude is shocking to say the least.
Thanks for filling us in.

Because Jaywan's account is still NOT BANNED, I'm PM'd a MOD to see if he can take care of it (ie perma banning that fool)
I believe the mods have better things to do than permaban his retarded ass. Like banning people for posting bad pictures or threating banning for using bad language or for flaming or arguing. Cause that's much worse than some dip**** that steals peoples money and shows how much of a douche he is.
Seeing as his account still isn't banned, it's safe to say that the moderators don't care. If they would at least stay out of the MP altogether, I wouldn't mind so much. It's the fact that they pick and choose when and how they will participate that bothers me.

[Q] So I lost my Note and At&t replaced it. But I found it ?

I had my phone for a lil over a month . its was in perfect condition i had it in a case with a screen protector since i day i got it. then i lost it . i will admit i was a lil drunk when i lost it and for the life of me couldnt find it. So I reported it lost and my insurance replaced it. Well last night my girlfriend comes over and tell me look what i found in back of the couch. So now I have 2 Notes . I want to know it the Note I lost is still good will it work? can i sell it and not get introuble. I know what the right thing to do is. I just want to know if there are any other options.
Unlock the IME# and see if it'll take a different SIM card. If so, then just sell it as an unlocked note. Should bring you decent cash.
On second thought... don't. Um... it's rubbish, just mail it to me. I'll um... take... care... of it.

you have seen the articles about the carriers getting together to track, lost, and stolen phones, right? The IME number is like a fingerprint. You use that one, or sell it, and they will find out, and probably find you. Be smart, and tell your insurance, or be stupid, and get nailed for fraud.
Sell it for a quick 500 have the phones lost or stolen will take any aim card trust. I i have connected phones I found with no problem just called at& the and told them I purchased on ebay and they got it going

That's paranoid. If they do find it, all they can do is track it to the person using it. Just sell it on craigslist at a random public meeting place and don't tell the buyer any personal info.

Unlocked means you can use any sim card. AT&T does not block the IMEI# for whatever reason. I was reading a article about [email protected] being investigated for activating phone that have been reported stolen. I have had phones that i bought for really cheap from people who where kinda shady and im sure they where stolen and t-mobile & AT&T hooked them up with no questions asked.

Hiding water damage for warranty - bleach?

I was planning on bring my SGS2 to the repair center, since its been giving me so much trouble lately, unfortunatley i dropped it in water before i could get there
As far as i can see there are 2 water indicators on the phone - on the phone itself to the right of the battery, and also one on the battery.
I actually used a Q-tip and bleach and both are no longer red, but are there any more anywhere else on the phone? And are there any other ways they will be able to tell it has water damage?
Are you really asking the forum for help in scamming AT&T for you? Take responsibility for yourself.

O god forbid someone scam ATT!!!!!!:crying: We should all be so careful to treat this honest and ethical company with nothing but respect. They get what they give after all.
Ive been paying for insurance for 2 or 3 years now, have never made a claim, and they raise the deductible for a claim to 200 dollars? Screw you ATT. The phone was faulty before it got water in it. Im saving someone else the trouble of getting this device refurbed, because you know ATT would just repackage this phone and give it to some poor SOB.
Whether AT&T is an evil company or not is not the issue. This is not the forum to be asking for help to scam them or anyone else.

Hey genius, it's only a scam if by flashing a ROM you mess the phone up and then try to get AT$T to replace it. What you are trying to do is get AT$T to pay for your clumsiness. Fine, go right ahead and try, but trying to enlist people in here to be your accomplice in that scam is against the forum rules. This thread is destined to be closed.
Don't even try it. They check more than the indicators. The check corrosion on solder points etc......... they will know.

I dont know, I doubt they will even bother to check anything besides the obvious. They make so much money on these phones, the amount it would cost to pay someone to analyze what happened to a phone wouldnt pay off.
You don't deserve help. Scamming is not supported here, a mod will most likely shut this down...so inb4lock?

There is a distinct and significant difference between returning software to stock to enable a user to return the phone for hardware defects that were not caused by the user (failed usb ports, power buttons, etc.) and trying to return a device that was physically damaged by careless use/abuse. The reason deductibles go up is because of this type of behavior.

like i said the phone was failing before it got water damaged. Disagree with you on the second reason. the deductible went up because of ATT's greed. I can outright buy this phone off contract for not much more than their deductible, plus what i pay every month - it doesnt make any sense.

[Q] Soft or Hard Bricked?

I just got my note back from Samsung this past Thursday. I just flashed it with Liquid Jelly Bean and the newest Gapps. It won't reboot but when I hook it up to my computer one drive in Windows Explorer goes on & off repeatedly. I do think it has life but there is no video, sound or vibrations? Can I handle this or will it need service again? Thank you in advance for any help given!
Personally I think you should man up and send it to Jtag. I assume since you sent it to Samsung, that you have one fraudulent claim already. Why would it be the fault of the manufacturer that you bricked your phone (twice)?
Take responsibility for your actions. And if not, please don't post about it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
They had to replace a component in it last time. it may not been fully my fault. May be a weak in it.
But this time?

I got it by email today. So, I thought it was up to date.
This is what mean
http://www.android.gs/install-liqui...ng-galaxy-note-i717-android-4-1-2-jelly-bean/
I clicked the download link in that article and it started downloading the d2ATT version which is the galaxy s3. Sounds to me like that article has some very wrong links that will brick a phone and require JTAG
I know. I wish I had noticed
So there is no question ... You take reasonability ... Send to jtag this time ... Learn your lesson ... Read better from now on. Right?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
Would it be safe to say, that 99% of device bricks are user error?
And the other 1% either bad files or hardware failure ?
I think so, and wholly agree that if you make a mistake and damage your device, then take responsibility and pay to repair the mistake.
Making another party (Samsung) pay for the mistake just drives up the cost of new devices for everyone.
This device is nearly a year old (ancient by device standards) yet the retail price is still $500.00.
Personally, I already paid for mine, and I really don't want to pay for device repairs that I didn't cause, due too people not doing the research they should have when I buy another one.
Now I get it, and I'm not a heartless azzhat, but if your gonna lie, don't advertise it here....g
I'll add one last thing .. If your going to screw around with a device that is this expensive, don't trust a link from an email. Do some research. Come to xda ... Ask questions if needed, read all you can, and read some more. How many junk emails did you delete today alone?
This is 99.9% your fault. Send it to Jtag ... Take your lumps. LEARN. Accept that it's not Samsung that failed. I for one will think more highly of you.
When you get your phone back ... Before anything else ... Go here:

Whatever turns you on. Just remember when you dig one grave you better dig another one. I can't see the problem of exercising my rights to warranty. Sorry y'all are all Scrooges. Why should it bother you how I do it. Whatever u chose to do wouldn't cause me to harass you.
But still in my Christian heart. I wish all of you a very blessed Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!!!!
In your lying thieving Christian heart.
you are committing a crime. You void the warranty by just rooting it, you tired to install a custom os, and failed. The only right you're exercising is your right to commit fraud...again.
It's your fault your phone doesn't work now.
Why should we, the modding community as a whole start to jump through hoops to get access to our own devices because manufacturers and carriers want to lock down devices because people are stealing from them?
That's the main reason why New devices are so expensive and Verizon forces locked boot loaders... which has set a precedent, and if this continues I see other carriers following suit.
OK guys point well made.
OP,
You already used your warrenty on something that could have been a device defect or an issue caused by something you did that caused the part to fail. Either way this time was fully your doing. What you plan to do is a big problem and is not condoned by this site. Man up and get it fixed yourself.
Lets leave religion where it belongs and this site is not it.

If your under warranty you could get ahold of Samsung and see about sending it in for repair. Turn around time is roughly 3 weeks. I doubt that a "jig" is going to work (from my previous experience.) You could send it out to get it JTAG repaired. Which is more probably what your thinking of. Either way your looking at between a couple days to a couple weeks to get it fixed.
If your sending it in to Samsung, you could tell them that you were installing an app, and then the phone turned off and wouldn't turn on or anything.
You need to pay up for the mistake and get jtag. It's going to cost you about 50 bucks. Sending it to Samsung is considered fraud since this is not a warranty issue but user error

It shows there are two kinds of people here: one group wants to really help people in need to the greatest extent including legal and possibly illegal means, the other group just wants to sit on their asses and go "I told you so, you should be more careful and do research first"
I did my basic research, including asking newb questions on xda. Based on what you guys said, I bought an i717 instead of the t-mobile version. Because I was carrying out a research, I had dozens of tabs on open on Firefox, and that's a contributing factor as to why I mistakenly flashed an international kernel on my at&t note.
Before you jump in, fingers waggin, saying useless things like "do search," please realize that an older device like the original note can have a long and sordid history of development. I was overwhelmed by the variety of "guides" and "howtos" and questions and answers when I first started reading about the Samsung Galaxy Note. Please be kind to semi-newbs like me, we are the silent majority here. (ranting)
One more rant before I go back to sleep (it's 6:25am here in rainy Southern California),
kernel developers should NOT be allowed to name their kernels "UNIVERSAL" I was suckered in to flash a "UNIVERSAL" kernel on my ATT Note I717. That UNIVERSAL kernel was only for International Note N7000.
I know, I should've known better. Well, a lesson learned, and as someone said above, it only cost $50.
If you are referring to me in your rant, I never even referred to you in my post. I pointed out that the posted suggestion above to return to Samsung for warranty was not only fraud .. But also against xda rules to be talking about. As for the post I agreed with ... If you've been reading around here lately you know there has been a rash of "help I've bricked my phone"threads lately. Some were due to a bad link to a rom outside xda. For some reason ... a lot of users here think that Samsung should replace under warranty for their mistakes. It's not the case. Simple fact is ... once you root the phone you have no warranty. That said, I believe that there is a grey area ... a know hardware failure ..I think it is fine to revert to stock to warranty.
I'm glad you've worked you issue out and wish you luck in the future. But instead of going on a rant to people who you may need help from in the future ... ... Just saying .. don't burn any bridges.
Have a good weekend
Edit:
In rereading ... I really don't think anyone was that harsh. Some of these have gotten quite ugly.

Allright, got some needed sleep, got up and went to the post office to mail off my bricked Note to [email protected] in Texas. Priority mail to Texas from Southern Cal cost about $6 plus insurance cost $4, so all told about U$10 to mail my Note (sans batt, back cover, stylus, sim card and sdcard). According to the MobileTechVideo site, it will take about 4 business for Josh to repair it. So I'm looking at about 2 weeks before I can get mine back. Kinda wishing that I had sprung for express service for another $15-20.
I'm now regretting the rants I spewed out earlier. However, I believe I made a couple of valid observations. I am grateful to those who pointed out the jtag repair, specifically sending it for repair to mobiletechvideo. I know I can attempt the repair myself but for $50 it's well worth it for me to let a seasoned pro handle it.
One of my pet peeves is the "I am holier than you" attitude, you know the kind who goes around saying "I told you to research, make a backup nandroid, do md5 hash check on ALL your downloads, etc..." You know what, things have happened and now you're holding a brick in your hand due to whatever you did. No sense in kicking a man when he's down. How can you call it a help? And to those of you who clicked on the Thanks button to these kind of people, you know who you are, Fie on You!!!
To Bubbajoe,
Cool, I didn't mean to refer you or anyone else in my regrettable rants in my previous posts. I thought I needed to clarify that I never thought sending my bricked note to Samsung for warranty repair was an option. Thanks for pointing out that it would've constituted a fraud, had I done it. Having said that, now that the cat is out of the bag, I now know I have an option. I am sure other people who read this thread have now seen the option of sending it back to Samsung for repair under warranty. I don't want to judge people, what they do with their stuff is their private matter, I can only hope that you would do the right thing. I believe in karma, what goes around, comes around. If you gloat over other people's misfortune, your turn will come.
It seemed harsh to me. I was down and instead of helping me get up, some people were taunting and kicking me: "I told you so," "you didn't take my advice," "why didn't you read", etc, etc, etc... Do you call these advice "help" that deserved to be thanked???
From just reading the title your gonna need jtag. Its like $50-$60

Sir if your rant was directed at me I never said you were implying you were going to send it to samsung. I was only pointing out that that advice that someone else mentioned was not a good idea.
I am glad that you got in touch with mobiletechvideos to get it repaired. He has helped many people out with hard bricks around here. As for doing the repair yourself you need a riff box to do jtag and the cost of that is a lot more than what you ended up paying for Josh to do the service.
Hope to see you back up in running around here soon.

Agreed. And returning it for warranty should not even be suggested here on xda. Once rooted the warranty is void.

That statement bothers me considering they posted an article regarding rooting in July.

You saying they should make a retraction?
He flashed a kernel for a completely different phone. You don't need root privileges to do that. So, no, this doesn't contradict the xda position.
Buy a new gasoline fueled car, then go and put diesel fuel in it and destroy the engine. No dealer will cover that error under a warranty. You pay for your mistake and learn to double check next time.
Why is this thread still running? The op has his issue handled. Now it's just turning into a debate thread.

That's debatable
We've never had a debate thread.
Yeh....
We certainly don't need another heated thread.
Losing a great developer this week should be enough anger to tide us over don't you think ?
OP ....we have great people here, always doing their best to give back.
And once again, they "ALL" did ....IMHO ....
Bricking sucks, but thank goodness we have an out, unlike the old days where a guy just throws the phone in the trash and starts over.
Those guys down south do a fantastic job keeping us fixed up and going again.
It'll come back running like new...
Happy flashing ....g

While I highly respect Adam's opinion .. If you look at the attached post, you can see the statement copied directly from the Samsung website. Adam may be right ... Maybe not... But since it's Samsung we would be dealing with .. I would say the statement I made holds true. I'm not willing to fight my way to the supreme court to find out. If you are .. Let me know how it turns out. Also if you can gain root privileges without modifying or altering the electric circuitry .. Let me know that as well. Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36727175
As far as xda .. If the official opinion is that rooting doesn't void the warranty .. I have to wonder ... If we do have a rooted user .. Say with a hardware issue that wants to claim warranty .. why are we not seeing everyone post that it's no problem .. Just send it back rooted. We see responses on how to unroot to claim warranty. Why bother? Why aren't the mods closing these threads stating that the unrooting is not needed? Additionally if I'm denied warranty, I'd venture to say that xda would not replace my phone or help me hire an attorney to fright Samsung.

Mods, please lock this thread, close it, or do whatever you have to do to stop people from posting to it anymore. It has degenerated into something that's so far removed from the original intent of the OP, namely me. The issue has been handled. No more replies should be accepted. Thank you!
