Note Logic Board Replace? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hello to all
Yesterday I go to shop near my home the fix androids and iPhones and the tech tell me maybe is good idea replace the board (IMEI us different from the back and can't get signal in simple mobile same as Tmo well my question is how I really know if the board is damage?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2

Well have you tried different modems as well as the correct APN settings for those carriers?

I do not know how this "repair shop" gets their hand on the logic board to begin with.
I had been looking for a logic board, but NO ONE has it. Not even the supplier of Samsung repair parts. It is not for sale.
So, it sounds like they may be trying to trick you and charge you a big bill to "fix" it, when the solution is most likely as simple as flashing a different modem.

Yes Sir but let me try it again so if the APN is incorrect this matter on signal and calls? i mean with my skyrocket i never put the APN phone automatically loads (Tmo apn not simple mobile) and works better than the simple mobile itself

R800x GSM Enabled Development?

Haven't posted here in awhile but I've been watching the HP Touchpad forums lately. Anyhow
I managed to get one of the AT&T Developer Xperia Play R800a units awhile back and posted pictures etc. Lately I've been borrowing a r800x model from a friend and he's borrowing my R800a to use in the Philippines. I was curious and pulled off the battery cover and saw the nice plastic SIM cover..
I just bought a water damaged r800x (took a risk on e-bay should be here soon). Hopefully the board is still salvageable... the seller just mentioned the screen was shot.....
I've noticed the bootloader has been cracked for the r800x models and was wondering if anyone ever tried flashing a GSM generic firmware to a R800x?
I imagine it would brick the device if all else..but was curious.
From what i've been reading on various sources is that the R800x has both the CDMA/GSM Radios however the GSM Side is more likely disabled in the firmware. I know it probably takes more than just flashing a GSM variants firmware to enable GSM use but was wondering if anyone was attacking or attempting on a solution to enable GSM.
In the Verizon forums, verizon workers are claiming the phone does not have a sim slot but a member basically shut them up by pulling the glued tab however there was no other posts. Seems like a pretty useless phone if you are traveling abroad... there has to be a way to enable this!
I own a Verizon Blackberry Storm 1 and it has a simcard slot that works when it's unlocked. I also got it flashed for Metro PCS and it was funny using a ESN off a old Motorola Razor and paying a dumb phone monthly price.
Thoughts suggestions? When I get the water damaged phone in the mail, i'll be happy to donate for DEV use. I repair cell phones and will have the phone in a workable state if the water damage is not beyond repair.

Thanks for posting! When you say not connected... do you mean hardware wise? I have yet to see the inside of the phone other than FCC pictures and don't want to tear open my friends R800x. Now you got me scared like it's missing something hardware wise internally
I was the one that took the brick...
The thought is that it's firmware locked, although it could just very well be unsoldered just the same.
And for the record, the generic firmware will work just fine on the phone. There is just intermittent data and calling issues since all the CDMA stuff has been removed.
The brick occurred when the TA partition in the nand memory was flashed with a gsm build. That's a lot deeper than replacing just the /system files like the generic build does.

Good info. Hmm...well that sucks! Now I really can't wait till I get the phone to tear it apart. Unsoldered? Hmm yeah that could be a possibility as well since i hear people sticking SIMS into the phone but it won't detect it. If I remember correctly I think my Verizon Blackberry would still detect a SIM inserted even when it wasn't unlocked. It just wouldn't logon to a GSM network.
I'll check to see how the R800a and R800x boards differ with their sim slots. If it's indeed unsoldered it will be obvious by looking.
Does anyone know if there is a hidden system menu on the Xperia Play like how some Galaxy Devices have to enable different radio frequencies, gsm/cdma etc? My thinking..if there is such a menu Verizon and Sony won't say anything about it.

There is no support in the kernel and I doubt even in the hardware. IF (and this is the best case) the baseband supports GSM, it is disabled via firmware (not the kernel driver, but the hardware firmware). A good way to test if the SIM card is hooked up is to use a multimeter and measure the voltage through the pins in the sim slot. This of course required opening up the phone partially.

The only two hidden systems menus i've found are as follows:
Open your dialer, enter:
*#*#4636#*#*
This one has Phone info, Battery info, Usage States and Wifi info.
*#*#7378423#*#*
Has Service Info, Service settings (empty on my phone), and Service Tests.
Is this what you were looking for?
AFAIK, R800x has CDMA radio so GSM can't be enabled.
multimeter
nothing yet?
will it really be possible?
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/02/cdma-xperia-play-visits-fcc-promptly-gets-dissected/
I think using a multimeter in the sim slot would be the best way to answer it!
Could anyone try it?
I thought the CPU in the R800x could only do CDMA so GSM is impossible

Bump......
Any update on this? Its been almost 2 months so I doubt it. But still like to know. Would love to activate the sim card slot on my R800x.
It can't be done it's already been talked about over in q&a or general section one of the two that's why this thread is dead in the water

[Q] mobile data + active call + AOSP?

Longtime Sammy ROM (mostly Wanamlite) user here, dabbling now with new 4.3 ROMs based on AOSP, namely Carbon and PA. I like both of these releases and for the most part few problems but one:
The precise moment I start a cellular call, my mobile data connection drops. 3G, H, H+, doesn't matter. As soon as the call is over, the mobile data connection immediately resumes. Sorry if this is a noob question, but am I missing something here? I've played with a number of ro.ril build.prop settings, none of them seemed to influence this behavior a bit.
This is a deal killer for me, I commonly run IM clients and participate in web data conferences while simultaneously making phone calls. This works against AT&T service on the Sammy ROM.

Are you sure you have the GT-i9300 on AT&T and NOT the AT&T version?
I too am on att and use an i9300 not sure but i think the att version would say 4g instead of h+ or 3g. anyway What I do is I always use Stock rooted roms. I alter the default apn to geta much better signal. att does not recognize the I9300 as an sgs3. they frankly do not know what it is . also they do not support it. so they put the phone in the wap cingular default apn. this is also used for their prepaid and dumbphone customers. you can manually change apn settings.to get better data speeds and signal.
I have been researching on this for a few days. It seems like it is a motherboard issue with several GS3s... This sounds stupid, but try to hit the back of your phone really hard.. If the sound is workign for five minutes after doing this, it's most likely a hardware issue, just like mine..
i would think that hitting the back of the phone really hard would most likely cause damage to the motherboard and other microelectronic components. the op has stated that he has problems with his signal while using aosp roms. but the problems disappear on sammy roms. that would indicate that his problem is Not hardware related rather than software or incorrect settings in build prop.
I do believe you when you say you have hardware problems. if you are hitting the back of your phone as you have recommended to the op. it is almost a certainty that you have damaged the fragile internal mechanisms inside your phone.
Yeah! But the problem is that this is a known hardware problem with the S3. It's very annoying cause I love my S3.. Would be a bummer to sell my iphone 5 just to get a new S3.. I was thinking of buying a motherboard and install it myself. I just hope that the fault lies within the motherboard components
well first you need to find out if the problem is hardware related. my suggestion is to get your phone back to stock if it isn't already. then see if you have the same problem. if yes then try factory reset . if that does not work then you probably do have a hardware problem . but it is probably your baseband or antenna rather than your motherboard, also check that your apn settings are correct,
if you decide to send it to a service center do not tell them that you have been hitting your phone, and please don't advise anyone to hit their phone either, these devices are not cheap and hitting them will cause physical damage which is not covered under warranty.
Sure I understand that advicing someone to hit their phone is stupid. But taking from my example I've tried a bunch of ROMs, a bunch of radios. I've also reverted to stock ROM with the same problem.. the audio comes and goes when knocking the phone behind.. I've also tried to reassemble the whole phone myself. I've reattached every wire there is and the problem still persists.. This is a very weird problem
definitely sounds like hardware problem either speaker or wire connection.if the phone is under warranty then send it to samsung. if not then find a reputable repair shop that understands how to fix it. shop around because too many places only know I phones. also you can go for a paid repair from samsung. may cost more but at least you know it will be fixed right.
Thanks all for the replies. First, I have no plans to hit my phone nor do I have the audio issues the other poster hijacked regarding

Worth noting, I do not have LTE enabled on my AT&T plan (I have a grandfathered unlimited iPhone data plan) so can't use the lte or other "4G" APNs out there. I tend to use the wap.cingular APN as none of the other posted alternatives work better (or at all). What APN do you use out of curiosity?
Since my OP, I've also tried SuperNexus 3.0, and saw precisely the same issue. I've fiddled with bringing in applicable ro.ril build.prop settings from Wanamlite's ROM, checked my modem (it's the same between Wanamlite and the AOSP ROM's I've tried, I9300XXEMB6), tried different APN's nothing seems to work.
One thing I haven't tried, is to use a well-established AOSP 4.1 or 4.2 ROM.. may do that later if no other bright ideas come along.
att apn settings
this is what I use. just one apn called PHONE . I am in new York city. I don't know if this will work for you where you are. I am rooted and everything else is stock

[Q] UNBELIEVABLE issue

Had a Rezound from Asurion running 4.03.605 and Hboot 2.27. All was well. Left Los Angeles on 12/21. Arrived the next day in the Bay Area on 12/22. And since then? Not able to make or recive a call. All else works: 4G, internet, texting. Just calls. On the phone with Verizon for 1 hour, resettting all data info to my account and phone, no luck. Two hours in store getting new SIM and resetting system...no luck. Another Asurion replacement sent....new SIM card and THE SAME THING! Issue was escalated to Verizon networking team and I spent two hours on the phone yesterday trying to determine issue. Now if the SIM card and all matching items (IMEI) matched up, it should all work, right? The same SIM card was put into two different rezounds...one rooted, one not (fresh out of box) and neither could make a call. The tech finally stated that the software on the phones was the global leak of 4.03 and not a release authorized by Verizon...my reaction - "What?" The tech went so far as to suggest installing the last global leak - 4.05 and new radios and see what happens. Did just that...AND STILL NOTHING. Phone is perfect. Just no phone. Call goes out, connects, then lost. Same for incoming. No one seems to have a solution except blaming the phone software, tower differences between here and L.A....on and on. I find it all BS....because if the plder 4G SIMS are not compatibile, wouldn't many people across the USA have issues? So I come to ask for some of your thoughts. I am plagued right now. Have lost income due to my lack of access and reachability. And being two months shy of my anniversary for an upgrade, the great Corporation will not budge and get me a new working phone. This is a nightmare. I only imagine that as soon as I get back to Los Angeles, the phone will "miraculously" work again.
FYI: I had my original Rezound running 4.05 and Hboot 2.28 back in July 2013...came to the same trip LA->Bay Area. Never had a problem.
Thanks for your time all!
New Sim and different phone with same issues really points to the issue being with the carrier... Not much you can do unfortunately.

ust outta curiosity...do you have data roaming and everything enabled under mobile network settings...that would be my only guess....if not then yes it is verizon...the fact that on 2 seperate phones there is an issue is what gives it away...there is a leaked hboot and radios of hboot 2.28 and the 2.23 radios but idk if this will help your issue

Of the two phones I have in my possesion, one is total stock 4.03.605.....wiped it clean. No calls. The other phone I hacked with Hboot 2.28 and the current radios + 4.05 software....still nothing. A lot of what the senior tech told me is that no phones use those big old SIM cards anymore. Heck, he couldn't even find ONE store that a similar phone I could swap my SIM into in order to see if a call could be made. 1 week now with no phone and no restitution from Verizon. All they want to do is seed me to the Edge program. No dice. I'm fighting this to the end It's clear as day this problem is WAY beyond my control or the phones....all on VZW.

Done it all with the roaming settings, thanks. But as we all surmise, it's Verizon's problem...old phone can't connect with current networks. They need to admit this and get me a new phone.
8 days with no phone capability and counting.
Just tell then it's your work phone, and that you need it for your job or else. Even most prepaid companies like SraightTalk would replace it of it was your work phone. ST even upgrades you, because it is their fault and not yours.

[Q] modem, LTE Issue????? help

Ok, I've had issues with this phone that began with a bad battery. I got a new battery through insurance and my problems continued, even worsened. The phone will lose network connection constantly. It will reboot on it's own or during use. This is the only way it will obtain network connection once lost.... I went to at&t a million times and they flashed it for me a few times, replaced my SIM card three timesthis month and no luck. I decided to be brave and root it with cyanogenmods latest 4.4.2 kitkat (which I love, props to them) and it still continues to do the same crap! It's getting old and im beginning to think it must be a hardware issue, but I read about flashing a modem for the phone. Does anyone know if this might solve the problem or is it likely a hardware malfunction?
It seems to cause the most issues when im not on wifi or when LTE is activated.
Tried the *#*#4636#*#* code to change the connectivity settings but the only option im allowed to use is the lte/gsm auto (PRL).
Any advice is appreciated.... my next option is shooting it with my shotgun and using it as a conversational piece at the office.... maybe a

Could be a modem issue, could be as simple as changing you APN settings. Where is your location? Could be affecting you a bit. Run a search, many have had this issue.

I live in central Arkansas and I'm not exactly sure how to check my APN settings...?? And if it's a common issue based on location, why does AT&T not recommend a solution to anyone with problems? Or do they and I just don't know?
I've ran this phone on straightalk 3g for about a year. Recently upgtaded to a lte sim and loose signal a lot since. Miss calls. Don't get text. I have read certain art lte towers have this problem. Sounds good since my wife's s4 has same problem. Both phones ran fine and got calls on 3g sims

I found the settings directly through the AT&T website but theyb only povide 4G HSPA+ settings.. which are not LTE.
Follow this steps and check if your APN settings match, and if they don't then just create a new profile with the settings in this link:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...ogle-nexus-5-t-lte-apns-network-settings.html
Techinically, this settings are stated to be for the Nexus 5, but the APN are carrier based, so regardless if it states Nexus 5 APN settings they would still work for our OG Note
You should be able to get to your settings by going to settings / wireless data & networks ---more / mobile networks --- Access Point Names
Hope this helps!

I have had a friend give me a phone from China. This was already running CM10 when I got it and was the international version of the SIII . I have a work iPhone and took the ATT SIM out and placed it in it. I understand I cannot get LTE connection with this device... but the SIM did not appear to be recognized. I looked and there does not appear to be any unlock process for this phone with this software and I did not believe it was SIM locked as the owner told me he slapped regional SIMs in it when he traveled.
Does this imply hardware failure or am I missing something stupid here?

Hey THanks for the reply. Any suggestions as to how I can try alternate SIMS. Shoudl I walk into ATT and ask they replace the SIM for my IPhone as it is not working in other phones or should I buy a smart talk prepaid SIM or something. Any suggestions. Sorry for the seemingly stupid questions.
Regards.

I tried two att sims with no lucka nd one tmo. I took it to a shop where theyb replaced the reade and still no dice. Technician claimed bad radio flash, but the networks are seen... seems like sim reader. The other thing I noticed is that the device says wcdma on in. I know the chia carrier is gsm and the phone is supposed to be. Any thoughts?

not to resurrect but....
So I have had some updates. I took it to a local shop who attempted to replace the reader and said that a new one had the same issue. I then spoke with my friend who gave it to me and he mentioned some CM issue with SIMs being recognized. I updated the ROM and it worked well for a couple of days. THen I started having intermittant instances of the same issue..... until it completely recurred again.
I have taken it appart and resat the connection (thinking the repair guy didnt do it well and maybe that was my issue) but had no differnt results. I have tried a new ROM (SlimKat) and a couple of Kernels. I have not gotten into modem flashing yet as I am still trying to parse and understand the data there.
The Repair guy thought the modem was misflashed and that the installer who flashed CM11 messed it up. He suggested getting a Stock carrier ROM on there. I thought he was full of it and did not know what he was talking about... esp considering there is no domestic (US) carrier image for the 9300.
Thoughts or options? I have an i747 that I have been using but it does not have an unlocked SIM yet and I have been struggling to make that happen (EVEN WITH A CARRIER PROVIDED CODE??!!!).
Thanks in advanced for any assistance/insight you can provide.
Regards

Flashing CM doesn't touch the modem, most asop roms don't.
Try flashing stock which should reset everything.
