[Q] TF201 not connecting to PC via USB - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hi all,
I am having difficulty getting my TF201 to sync to my Windows PC via USB, and nothing seems to work. I've already tried rebooting both devices, I've made a Factory Reset on my Prime, tried using another PC (and even an Xbox), and I've even tried purchasing another USB cable, but nothing seems to work. Although the cable(s) charge my Prime just fine. I wondered whether it couldn't be a problem with my Prime's connector, but I'm skeptical since the connector can charge, connect to my mobile dock, and recognize peripherals attached to the USB port on the dock.
When I connect the Prime to my PC via USB, the Prime doesn't show the USB Debugging icon nor the ASUS Sync icon, while the computer also shows no signs of recognition that the tablet is connected, not even on device manager. ASUS support (very crappy, btw) told me to install ASUS Sync on my PC, but no luck. However, my Prime's screen does turn on when I connect it to the PC, which, I believe, indicates that it is doing that painfully slow USB charge, but that's pretty much it.
I normally wouldn't mind, but I want to get root access for my Transformer Prime (running 10.4.2.17 JB firmware), and using ADB/Fastboot seems to be the only way. Is there any other alternative way of rooting the Prime? or is there a way to using ADB/Fastboot wirelessly, without root access?
Any help is really appreciated (this has been annoying me for a few months now).

Having the same problem. Are there any solutions?

Ah, I miss the days when the TF Prime could be rooted straight from an apk, without having to use ADB. Ah well, guess I'm not getting Android 4.2 then

Bluetooth usb hub, the yeti of peripherals?

I was thinking that since our tablet doesn't have a standard USB port (without the dock) a powered USB hub that could communicate with our tablet through Bluetooth would be a great solution. Does anyone know of such a device? I have searched high and low to no avail.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but I believe the prime has BT 2.x? If so the speed is limited to around 2-3mbps which is much less then USB, I could see some major bandwidth issues trying to use a USB device (especially using a multiple on a hub) causing the BT connection to fall over like a dead horse.
Edit: Yes Prime has 2.1+EDR

The usb host is the one dictating the bandwith.
So in principle you can have a flash driver that can do 1000MB/s work over BT at 2MB/s with out any problems or violations of the usb protocol.
I have found this interesting piece of HW maybe someone with more HW hacking experience can make it a full usb 2.0 host:

The biggest win here would be to be able to hookup HID devices (that usually have 64KB/s demand) that are made for usb to work with our phones.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 connected to Prime via dock USB port

Hey guys
I was trying to see if the Prime can power up my Galaxy S2 via the dock and as soon as I connected it, the Gallery app came up, the phone went into Kies mode, but the prime became unresponsive.
What is it supposed to do?
BTW, it did start to charge my phone.
Thanks
if you put the phone into mass storage mode, it all charge and you can browse the phone.

Would this work with an MTP phone? I don't have a dock yet, I'm waiting for champagne docks.
wpghtc, did you actually do that? I want to a USB to address files on my phone from my prime, but i get no response when its connected. The phone is in mass storage mode too
I just tried this with my Galaxy S2 but it does not work even in storage mode. It does charge the phone but no access to the files.

Just Bluetooth transfer or I like to use my cloud drive as a "middle man". There are alternatives. However what you are trying to do.... this seems llike something that will work in the future. IMO

Prime USB 2 PC not connecting

Hey yall,
I got a quick question. My Prime for some reason will NOT connected to my PC as of this afternoon. Ive tried connecting to multiple PC's afterwords and none of them would detect the Prime at all and vice versca as my Prime would not pull up any notifications showing that it was connected. I have the Asus sync drivers installed and I know this becuase my Prime was plugged in to the PC and I was able to view all my internal memory files and was about to push a file to it when it just stopped communicating.. any suggestions would be helpful and I will give thanks.
Im already factory resetting and restoring from a nandroid..i will update and find out if it works once the restore is complete...
Yeah ...that didnt work. I even went as far as factory resetting and starting from scratch but it does not work anymore. Anybody care to jump in?
OK now my prime won't charge at all unless the screen is off. Does anyone know if this is a charger issue or prime itself???

Could be a charger issue. Do you have a dock? you can try hooking it into that first.
Inspect the charger cable, look at all the connections and see if any of them look broken or bent

Incorrect, the prime charges fine over USB, as long as it is USB 3, my laptop charges the prime just fine.
USB 2 and previous do not output the power needed to charge the prime, the prime needs at least 11.1 volts to charge, the adapter puts out 15 when connected to a USB 3 cord, but a perfect 5 volts when connected to a USB 2 cord, so your phone is fine to charge on that charger as well.
As for connecting to the computer, check out Samba network fileshare.
It works perfectly for browsing, there is even a hack to allow you to browse your root directory as well if you have root.
However natively it only connects as a media device.
Thanks for the replies!
Well that sucks big time.. transferring movies over WiFi takes for eeeeeeeeeeever. Can't believe it's not supported as external file storage. Oh well.. get my dock tomorrow. Should simplify things I hope.
I guess you can't connect the dock to a PC to transfer either?
That is correct, the dock adds no special abilities.
Use an SD card adapter, put the car in your computer and transfer that way, as fast as it can possibly get.
Does any of the custom ROM's allow the device to be recognized as a storage device? This would actually be worth it for me to unlock my boot loader.

My TF201 is recognized as media device named Transformer Prime TF201 in Windows Explorer and I can manage the memory storage without problem.
Is the right driver installed on your pc?
You can also use AirDroid (free on Play Store) to manage your files. But it's through Wi-fi.
Btw: my TF201 is rooted. I don't know if it make a difference.
I second the advice about charging. No charge when i plug to my pc (USB2), charging when plugged to my notebook (USB3)
Usb3? Sure, if you got it.

That's not true. Like pnoire stated, you can get your TF201 to be recognized as a media storage device. And also like you, when I first tried to connect my new TF201 to my pc, it wasn't even detected as plugged in. After a few tries, I figured maybe that USB port was bad as I've known it be kind of bad from time to time. So I tried a different port. This time my pc detected it as being connected but then it was listed as "Unknown device" under Device Manager. After some Googling and searching the forums, I ran across the thread about the Universal Naked Driver Beta in the development forum and it mentioning that some USB drivers for some Android devices conflicting with others. Since I had installed the Samsung USB drivers for my Samsung phone, I thought maybe that's what was causing the problem. I proceeded to uninstall the Samsung USB drivers and then retried connecting my TF201. Sure enough, my PC detected it again and proceeded automatically install the drivers it found from searching the internet and VOILA! My TF201 is now a working media storage device displaying both the internal sdcard and my microSD card I put in it.
Long story short, try uninstalling any other Android USB drivers for any other Android devices you might've installed earlier. Sometimes the only way of uninstalling the drivers is to first connect that device to your PC and uninstalling the drivers while viewing the device in Device Manager.
I'm not entirely sure how much help this will be but I had the exact same problem as the OP when I got my prime 2 months ago. I looked everywhere and found a solution although unfortunately I couldn't find the solution again after just trying to link you to it. Go to the device manager and find your prime listed as an MTP device. right click and go to properties. I'm pretty fuzzy on this so bear with me. You should have an option to select driver from a list. click that option and you'll have a ton a driver options to select. Look for the driver called something like "Universal MTP..." and install that. I was able to browse all internal storage on my prime after I did that and it would auto-connect like any other USB device once I plugged in the prime there after. Good luck!
I don't know if this will help or not, but when I tried with mine it wasn't recognized either. So after trying a couple of times I tried wiggling the usb end of the cable going into the PC and bingo it shows up as "Transformer Prime TF201" and I can transfer files no problem.
Hope this helps.
Mark
I am confused. My normal state. Do you use the cable that is the charger cable or do you need a micro USB cable.
Thanks.

The charger cable that came with the Prime.
I had this problem with MTP drivers being screwed up on my computer and several devices wouldn't work correctly.
I Google the MTP driver error I was getting on connection and in device manager and found it was due to a registry problem. If you're having that problem I can find the guide again and send it to you.

When you open device manager does it show up but with a yellow exclamation? Does it show up as unknown? You haven't given much to go on.

I had this exact same problem. I grabbed a new cable, tried my gf's cable from her tf101 and nothing seemed to work. I updated the firmware to ICS hoping that fixed it and notta, then updated to JB and that bricked my tablet. Prior to all that I couldn't get my pc to recognize my tablet. After I RMA'd it and received it back guess what - it worked
Whatever they did on their end fixed it. The only thing slated on the receipt was reinstalling the OS so there was no hardware replacement. I'm thinking that a full wipe and install might do the trick if it happens to me in the future, if this is what they do in their facility.
Hope that helps
