According to Verizon and one of their premium retailers I will be able to give my upgrade to one of the lines with a dumb phone and order/activate it on that line then transfer it to my line and only affect the dumb phones's contract. Anyone done this or heard of it?

When you "transfer" an upgrade it extends the original line with the upgrade. You are just giving the new phone to a different line.
A little known secret is that Verizon will allow you to switch contract end dates with other lines, but only when you are terminating a line.

You do not have to terminate a line. I changed the contract date on one of my lines. I added a 3rd line to get the Note2. took out the Unlimited data sim card in my main line and put it in my Note2 the same day.

Ok why did you change the contract end date? And you cant just change the date, you have to swap it with another line.
Yes, you can add a line (up to 5) to get a new phone, but then you have a new 2 year contract on that line. Then when your end date comes on your line you can use it to cancel the new line.

I've done this multiple times to keep unlimited data on our phones. We keep a dumb phone on our 5th line just for this.
But whatever upgrade you give to the dumb phone, that phones contract is the one that gets extended. Not the dumb phones's.

I work for a retailer and this is true. You will extend the contract on the number with the upgrade but if it's applied to a feature(basic) phone then you won't loose your unlimited data. Once the phone is activated on the basic phone line it can be then be transferred to your number.

I just went to a Verizon Corporate store and they swore that, as of the end of last year, the original line that the upgrade is transferred from will get its contract extended and lose its unlimited data. This flies in the face of everything everyone is saying on this thread. Can anyone confirm one way or the other?

Thanks for you're encouragement. This is all so confusing. I called Verizon and asked a rep, and she said it would absolutely make me lost the unlimited data on the line. Do people here think they're instructed to lie about this, or is it that as far as they know it's the policy, but in actual practice the data on the line remains unlimited? I did find a Verizon premier retailer store (ie non-corporate) that said it would not affect the original line's unlimited data. Just scared to death I'll pull the trigger here and lose.

To be honest its been a while since I've done this and for all we know they may have either 1. Tried to close this "loophole" in their system or 2. they tell all their employees that it causes you to loose unlimited data but you really don't.
You can always try. If you walk out the store and see unlimited is gone just go back in and return it.

That seems like a good plan, but the question is, and maybe this one is easier to answer, how long does it take them to boot you off unlimited and onto a tiered plan? Will you see it immediately, or "eventually"? If it's "eventually," the timing on returns may be tricky.

The corporate store said no as well. I ended up finding a Verizon rep on chat on their site who guaranteed I could do it and said he would notate my file to that end, so I ordered the phone online. I pray to god he's right when I call to activate the phone. I do have a copy of the chat I can send to the activation rep if he disagrees, fingers crossed...

Yes. i was skeptic as well. But, I did that on line over a month ago and it works. Just transfer your upgrade (from the unlimited line) to another line (dumb phone or smartphone, doesn't matter). When you get the new phone, activate it first on the line that upgrade was transferred to. Then, reactivate the new phone on your unlimited line. It works.
Related
Before everyone flips out on me... give me a second. So I told my dad he was going to lose his unlimited data if he didn't upgrade his phone by today. Which of course he ends up waiting until today to do. Come to find out that he had to upgrade before today in order to keep his unlimited data. We are on a family share plan and only me and my dad have unlimited data, but my brother and sister, who are also on it, have the 2GB data cap.
So I told him to try to transfer his upgrade to one of them and get the subsidized price and just upgrade it on his line. So he tries to pre-order the SGSIII on my brother's line and this pops up.
"The existing plan Nationwide Account Level Talk & Text Family Share 2000, is not compatible with the new device." So it either chooses new individual plan or new share voice and data plan.
What's confusing though is that under smartphone data packages, it doesn't have the new family data plan pricing. It still has 2 GB for $30, 5GB for $50, and 10GB for $80 and under plan shares summary on the left side where the totals are, it does say "Nationwide Account Level Talk & Text Family Share 2000". So I'm confused as F*CK right now and I want my dad to keep his unlimited for at least another 2 years, but I also don't want to lose mine and get screwed over with this new family data share plan. Not to mention that fact that I'm not sure whether they are actually forcing us into this new data share plan or not.
Thoughts? Can anyone who has a family plan with an upgrade vouch?
There is no more grandfathering it on on subsidized phones. You have to purchase the phone out right to keep unlimited now. No upgrading from 3G to 4G and keeping unlimited either I believe.
Put him on an individual account and then merge the two later on. The account change probably wouldnt happen til you activated the phone on your brothers account any ways...They effed up my rezound upgrade/account and that happened. Easy fix :3
Edit: that may not work due to their crap share accounts...

Also, I would like to add that if the family data share plans aren't forced there should be no reason why an unlimited data line couldn't transfer their upgrade to a 2 GB plan. Have that person upgrade and upgrade the line on the unlimited person's line. Herego unlimited data being kept with an unsubsidized Price.

I pre-ordered mine back when we where talking on the mik.
I don't even really want the thing, I absolutely LOVE my rezounds but I figured I might as well grab the last subsidized phone available.
Op simple fix. If it isn't broken don't fix it! People really need to stop buying new phones. If you have unlimited, on any plan/network/phone please don't upgrade.
And I also agree with the screen being way to big and hassle.

Well everyone's completely missing the point of my post. I'm trying to figure out if Verizon is indeed trying to force us into these new data share plans if you're on a family plan.
I just upgraded to sgn2 and lost my unlimited data. I'm so sick about it. What sucks is that when you upgrade and plan switches over to the 2gb plan, you will be billed for your data usage over your new 2gb limit. So I biggie sized my data plan for an additional $40 to avoid having to pay $90 on my bill date for my exceeding data usage (11gb).
So in my frustration I went on searching for Internet and decided to use clear which sucks balls in my side of this huge apt complex. But I haven't used my Verizon 4g lte yet b/c I'm over my limit so I've been on wifi using my clear wireless wifi hot spot. And Google now sample cards dont load while on wifi. It indicates that its loading but never loads. Do I need to be on 4g? Samsung definitely needs to release some updates in the near future. Anyone else having this problem?

My cards work fine on 3G, 4G, and WiFi.
My cards work fine on WiFi too.
I'd return the phone withing your 14 day cancel period. 11gb... wow... The amount you are paying monthly on the biggie sized plan is enough saved to buy the phone outright after a few months and keep unlimited.

Yea I know. It's too late to try and get that plan back with returning the phone . The plan is switched over already . But I can return it for another unit . I'll probably exchange it for it may be something wrong with it internally.

After you enable Google Now it needs time to learn before it shows you cards. When I first enabled it it appeared to do nothing but checking back later it's starting to show cards such as temperature, etc. Also, update Google Now by updating Google Search.

You probably won't be able to do it at a store, and you'll have to call them up and perhaps speak with one of their managers who can make it happen. Just don't take no for an answer.

When you add the line and you take one of their phones at the discounted price it will force you to lose the unlimited. If you pay full retail on the new phone you then can ask to keep your unlimited.

Be wary of following advice from the stores that's all I have to say about that. If you currently just have a single line plan and turn it into a family plan they will give you one of the new share everything plans. Unless you're currently on one of the older family plans and you're under 5 lines I believe you could add one and retain the unlimited data on your line. It would just add another montly access charge 9.99 + cost of data plan and other features.
The last time I talked to a CSR they told me that if I change anything that my plan changes. I asked to add tether and they told me I'd lose my unlimited. Don't know how true it is since everyone hears something different.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
When it comes to the VZW CSRs you'll get a different answer everytime you call in. Since there are so many centers and a majority of them are outsourced no one is held accountable for what they say.
Manager at verizon store in my town told me I can get upgrade still keep my unlimited data, they would just put upgrade on one of lines that has 2 basic phones and I be in another 2 year's with unlimited data nothing changes. I'm planning to get DNA this Friday. Just have to find employee that willing to help u out.

You can change to a shared plan and keep your unlimited data but it will be expensive. If you choose the legacy Nationwide Share Talk and Text plans, you can keep unlimited data on your line ONLY, and still add as many lines as you want. Again, it will be expensive.
I used to be on the 450 minute plan with unlimited text and data...was about 95 a month after tax. I changed to the Nationwide 1400 plan (100.00), plus unlimited text (29.99), kept my unlimited data (29.99), added 2gb for my wife's line (30.00), and there is a 9.99 access charge per line. Add in insurance, my Slacker subscription, and tax, and i am paying about $185 for 2 lines.
You would definitely save money by going to a Share Everything plan.

im guessing when your parents cut off the data, they took off the unlimited and made a family shared data plan. and to get hotspot, you have to pay extra for that, unless your rooted

Share everything includes hotspot that takes data from your shared pool.

I dont know whats up but here is some extra info.
My parents cut me off of texting calling and data back in feburary. I saved up and got this phone full price. While at the verizon store buying this phone I mentioned I didnt have data. The guy activating my phone pulled out my new sim and typed a bunch of stuff in for a few minutes and put it in my phone and handed it to me. When I tried signing into gmail, 4g worked. Before my parents cut my data off I had unlimited. While I was cut off my family changed to shared. Could the guy at the verizon store have done something letting me have unlimited or shared with no tethering?

Call Verizon and tell them you have a shared data plan and to activate the Hotspot. It should work by default.

He shouldn't need that since he's on a shared data plan. That would be nice if he had unlimited data.

The odd thing is that I may be on unlimited individually or something but on shared as a family. My data is still counted on the shared data pool but I dont get tethering.

Only way to really find out is dial *611 on your phone and click the call Verizon option and ask them and find out what plan you have. If your on unlimited data or shared data. If shared tell them the hotspot doesn't work.

That...isn't...possible. You can't be both unlimited and shared. You can't be individual plan and be family shared.

Dude you could have had this resolved ages ago by just dialing *611 then selecting call Verizon on the bottom on the list. They can FIX this issue you are having and ONLY them. You must be handicapped or something to not have called Verizon already. This is all based off the picture you posed. Based off your picture you posted you have 6GB of SHARED data which means FREE Hot Spot access.
I apologize if this is in the wrong forum.
I called Verizon to purchase a new phone out-of-contract. The sales rep told me that Verizon no longer allows out-of-contract purchases, their only option is month-to-month. She confirmed that this would take away my unlimited data.
I'm not sure if she's right so I'm asking folks here. Is this true, does Verizon no longer allow you to buy their phones without giving up unlimited data?
You can still buy phones full retail, but you do need to have service with Verizon - perhaps the rep thought out-of-contract meant you didn't have service anymore.
I had to buy mine at best buy when I bought off contract

I thought so too, but I clarified with her that I have an existing service with Verizon; that's how she saw my unlimited data plan.
I would try either going to a Verizon store or another rep. I can't see how they can deny you from giving them more money.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't month-to-month the same as buying a phone off contract?

It is but they shouldnt remove your unlimited data. Month to month is when your contract is up and you are eligible for an upgrade. I have heard a few rumors they are getting rid of unlimited next year and its final but they can't force you to upgrade.

I thought so too, but evidently not. She said I would lose my unlimited data which sounds like it's a brand new contract, albeit month to month.

In theory you should be able to pop your sim card out of your old 4G phone and put it in a new, off-contract phone and have it work without issue. Maybe since you're trying to buy it through Verizon, they're pushing their shared data crap.

Try this out on Verizon's site and see if it works.

Wait, getting rid of unlimited data for everyone? Even legacy contracts?

That's just a rumor floating around. I am not sure it has any steam or how they would go about doing it.

This might be somewhat related to the topic but I try to do a device exchange for my wife who lost her phone. She went from an Android to an old iPhone4 and when I try to do it online the website was forcing me to upgrade my account meaning I would lose my unlimited data so instead I just called over the phone and did it OTA device change. It worked.

Not 100% certain, but I believe that would cause issues if the phone needed to switch to the 3G CDMA network.
