Does Link2SD have any negative effects? - Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Pro

Tired of using App2SD all the time. I read I can increase internal memory with LINK2SD however I have some concerns especially about SD card degradation, phone performance et al. Are my concerns justified or I'm just being a luddite?
Also is it true that this app only works with unlocked bootloaders?

Link 2 SD needs root mainly so no need for unlocked bl
And I've not come across any SD card degradation issue ....atleast not for me until now

Will Nandroid backup work with this tool as there is a new partition involved?
Sent from my MT11i using Tapatalk 2

As far as I'm concerned... in order to use this app you need to partition your SD Card. It doesn't have any negative effects on its life as long as you only partition it in FAT32/Ext2/3/4. But if you also make a Swap partition to increase your device's RAM, the part of the SD Card storing this partition will end up degrading its capacity. If you format the SD Card again and make only one partition in FAT32, there will be some memory that will be corrupted because of the Swap usage and, therefore, will be unusable, decreasing the capacity of the SD Card.

I don't intend on enabling SWAP as I know it degrades the SD CARD.

No, you need not partition your SD card for using this app as such...!
I don't partition my SD card...
But yea as you told Swap decreases SD card life...

If the ROM requires an ext partition, I would strongly suggest getting a Class 4 or better SD card. For what kind of partition, read the instructions for the particular ROM regarding filesystem/size.
Thanks again..
Ok..can u pls tell me which custom rom supports class 2 sd card...and which one doesnt need partition of sd card

This is not a matter of ROM. Class 2 is simply too slow, I would not suggest using with any custom ROM that relies on sd-ext partition. Best case will cause the phone to be slow.
CM7 ......i m using it on class 2 sd card .....
Partition Sdcard:
Partition SD: Partition's sdcard for apps2sd (this formats card so all non backed-up data is lost)
- will create ext2 partition (you will be asked for size of ext2 and cache)
just to clarify things,.the backups made through nandroid will not be erased if i partitioned sd card?

If you partition your SD card all data that was there before will be GONE. (Already written pretty explicitely in the text you quoted.)

what do you mean by swap the internal storage with the external? dont you just normally use both internal and external together?
FOr what reasons? For apps to be moved/installed in the external SD?
Answer is at the moment Apps2SD doesn't work YET in s3
No. I mean to literally swap their mount directories. I've done this before on my Note. I edited my vold.fstab and with a little help got my internal storage mounted to /sdcard/ExternalSD and my 64GB SD card mounted to /sdcard. That's what I want to do here.

Thank you so much. And to answer the questions, I want to do this so my internal storage can be as big as the SD card I'm using. For example, I have the storage swapped on my n7000 so my 64GB SD card is read as internal storage and my 16GB internal storage is read as an external SD card.

I would like to do the same. i have done this switch on my note and it works flawlessly. I want to do this because I am a hardcore gamer and 16gb is nowhere near enough space to store all my game data, but my 64gb sd card is.

Never thought of it that way hehe. But I have a question about the setup: Have you ever had issues where your SD card randomly unmounted itself? If so, what happened to the system? Were you still able to run it or did it freeze or anything else?
Thanks
Not even once and I have had it set this way on my note for months through several different roms

The internal SDcard is not a real partition but a userspace mount (fuser)
It's configured in the file /init.smdk4x12.rc with the exact definition:
Code:
service sdcard /system/bin/sdcard /data/media 1023 1023
I don't see the daemon getting any kind of configuration as to the target directory. Either it's hardcoded or it uses /system/etc/vold.conf definition volume_sdcard the mount_point value.
You can't use Easy UMS anymore though since it will unmount the external SD.
Just using the APK Directory Bind will work fine though to simulate folders on the external SDcard as being on the internal one.
You can swap over the Internal SD with your external SD so you could have a 64GB phone with a 16GB ext card (assuming your phone is a 16GB one) - take a look at ExtSd2InternalSd v4|Increase your data storage

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 I8160L+SD CARD

Hi,
As u can see in the title, I own a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 I8160L.
It has 4gb internal storage but only about 1.1gb user available. Most of the more exciting games have data that are 1.5gb and more.
Is there a way to install these games and have the sd data go to my external micro sd card and not the internal 1.1gb 'sd card'?
Thanks in advance, Nate
Are you root? Because you could try Directory Bind
Im not rooted as yet. And im not familiar with directory bind. Will look it up tho.

Is there any root free solution tho? I will root but only as a laat resort
Sent from my GT-I8160L using Tapatalk 2
Yeah, I am also looking for some root free method to swap sd card and external card in my galaxy ace 2.
I dont really know why in samsung phones our external sd card is nt treated as an sd card.
I had htc one v prior to this phone and atleast one good thing abt that phone was it would move apps to external sd card not to internal storage like samsung phones.
Now with this phone (galaxy ace 2), external sd card size is quite irrelevant for apps, coz this phone counts the internal usb storage which is only 1GB as sd card.
Anyways if u find any root free method to swap storage, plz post it here too.
Thanks.

Did u try it? Does it move the app to external card? Or to the usb/internal storage?
And i think (not sure) as far as app data is concerned, it does not take too much of storage, so it shd not be an issue.
And i m not an expert in rooting, so i think i wont go for it. But lets see.
Sent from my GT-I8160 using xda app-developers app
Yea it works for most apps. And if not. When u move them to the sd card thru the app manager they move to the external storage. This doesn't apply to system apps or the large sd data files that accompany those huge games that need additional data.
Sent from my GT-I8160L using Tapatalk 2
Okay right.
Actually the problem is when we go to settings-apps-sd card, it shows the usb/internal storage there, not the actual external sd card. So when i move any app to sd card (which is moveable), it is moves to the internal usb storage (which the phone considers as sd card storage).
But i ll give this trick a try.
And one last thing how did u confirm it that with this trick, apps are now being moved to external storage and not to the internal usb storage?

Checked the storage before and after moving apps. And also i took my sd card out. Put it in a card reader and found the apps in a folder on the micro sd card called android secure

Solution to this is rooting, and using directory bind. I currently have asphalt 7(1.4gb) Real racing 2, Dead Space, Shadow Gun etc installed and running fine from my external sd card
GB
Jellycream rom will sort that out, it swaps the vold file and you will be able to download bigger files.
can i?
can i play games form external sd card like games 1.8 and .15 gb ?
Nice

What's SD card partition

What happens by partitioning SD card.
What us it exactly
Sent from my Xperia Neo V using xda app-developers app
All medium-low android phones have the limited internal storage. If you will install many apllications on your android phones, your internal storage maybe will decrease and affected the phone performace. So, you need to install your applications on your external storage/SD Card. That's why there is a partition of the SD Card. This method allows you to sacrifice a part of the memory of the SD card to install applications on the partition created, and save internal memory
Partition=split
So partitioning the SD card is splitting the SD card

It basically as other said means dividin ur sd card. What's it's use u say?
I hav a Xperia Neo V and Pro along with 5 other SE phones. But unlike my Sola the older Neo V has only 400 Mb for apps of which only 250 mb is available after bloatware crap. So i partion my SD card and install "Link2SD" and BAM!! i now moved all appd to SD by that i mean fully moved not just the move to SD card option in ur Manage applications menu. I now hav 343Mb free for apps after having 62 apps installed.

EXT size doesn't matter, put the space necessary to fit your needs. If you doesn't wish to use SWAP (or if you doesn't know what's that), set the SWAP size to 0.
Pay attention to this, also:

My advice to you would be to use minitool wizard to partition your sdcard.
But however or whatever way you choose to partition your sdcard remember to make a copy of your sdcard contents in a folder on your PC.
