[Q] Denying Update cause am scared - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am currently on a rooted SGS2 GT-i9100. Rom: AllianceROM ICS with Siyah kernel (no link cause it's fairly popular).
Since two days ago my phone keeps asking me to update my device. Programmeupdate is roughly translated (located in About phone> And the first "bar")
Could this be the JB update? It doesn't seem like JB cause it's file size was about 13.5 MB, but am still not sure.
I keep denying it because i think it could brick my phone, don't know though, but i'm sure as hell not gonna find out. The icon for Update keeps staying in my statusbar and every 3 hours it comes as message with alternatives: Install or Later. (i keep pressing later) This is really annoying and hence my question (main)
How do i get rid of it?
Or if it's good to update, i'll do it, If one of you say so.
Thank you for your time and extra thanx for replies
Regards

By removing/stopping it with titaninium backup.

Uncheck the autoupdate option from about>update...
Official JB update isn't out yet...
But AllianceROM got its JB XXLSJ ROM...you can just flash that..

*EDIT!* Found the process and freezed it. Thank you for that suggestion!

I've unchecked everything in there, still it doesn't dissappear. With the JB Alliance, do you mean this one?
Also could you answer: if i Did update this by pressing install, would it brick my device?
Thank you for the time.

Sorry dude, no idea whether it'll brick your device or not...haven't tried the software OTA even once..
Mostly shouldn't, but why take the risk..

I have done root, clock mod, AP mod, and changed the boot animation. The reason I was asking is I was just curious so I would know if I will get the OTA updates.

What you asked previously was "STOCK" firmware. If you haven't flashed a ROM then you're on "STOCK" firmware but you did modify some parts of it with MobileAP so I don't know how that would play about.
Simple Solution.. its on the stickied post
IF I ROOT, WILL I GET OTA UPDATES?
Yes. Rooting will not prevent this, unless you flash a custom ROM that will block receiving the OTA update. If you do receive and download the OTA update, you will lose root. Typically within hours of the OTA becoming available, thanks to some fine XDA folks you can get the update WITH root. You would simply need to download and flash the update like a normal ROM.

Even if you dont get OTA, you wouldn't want it anyway because OTA gives the update to people in GROUPS and not every single person gets the update at the same time. So you can get yours two weeks after the first batch got the update. When a OTA is released, somebody will post the link for rooted and non-rooted users to manually push the update. So there isn't a need for OTA. Just look around the forum for it when its actually out.

Yeah it just seemed weird asking if you have stock or not. It honestly doesn't really matter because in the end, you're still going to get the update even if it isn't OTA.. you'll just end up manually pushing it which is better than OTAing.

That's because for them its a chore but to justify it they get paid. Here, we do it because its something we actually ENJOY doing (well.. not all of us like to help people) and we're more enthusiastic.
I never deal with customer support unless its something out of my hands.
When you flash simple mods like MobileAP or a new Battery icon, will it pose problems when you update, say to Froyo in the future?

I can see how he can get confused. I was a little when I 1st started paying attention to the whole Android scene.
Stock could mean a few different things to different people.
1. Stock = NOTHING CHANGED period at all. not even mods.
2. Stock = Rom that shipped with the phone with a few mods
3. Stock = A flashed "true stock" rom
4. Stock = an Google Android STOCK rom aka AOSP
I still go by the saying that their is no stupid questions just stupid answers.
another thing, thanks for at least posting this in the correct forum haha. A lot of the other members get really PEEVED when they see postings in the wrong area.

I wouldn't think that it would cause any issues updating to 2.2 with mods like the battery icon. I'm unsure of the MobileAP though cause 2.2 has it built in. I would prob remove that to be safe before you update. I'm still learning too so lets wait till a more seasoned member could give ya a better answer.

2.1 has it built in too.. its just the U.S. versions of the Galaxy S has it removed because of the carrier.
Just think of "STOCK ROM" as the default ROM without any modifications. That's the best explanation of it.

Not necessarily. There are advantages to moving to a custom rom. Look over relevant stickies (at the top of subsections), review the OP of roms, read user feedback, then decide.
I rooted and expected to go to a custom ROM at some point, but as of yet there has been no compelling reason to do so. With some minor tweaks (removal of bloatware, mostly) and the right apps, stock is working just fine for me. I'll wait until we have ICS source and some new ROMs based on it before I go custom.
Only reason to keep a backup is for showing people the before and after.

Actually until the download site problem is completely resolved, it doesn't hurt to root, then make a backup of the stock ROM to keep just in case. If you do need it, then you've got it, and it doesn't take that much space.
Yeah, considering how often download sites go boom nowadays, keeping a local backup is probably a good idea.
Not sure if this question can even be answered yet, but I too am looking to root, but keep the stock ROM. I just got my i777 4 days ago and am wondering, if I root... will that, in any way, change the upgrading process to official ICS (I'm aware I may have to re-root once I update)?
Once you start removing things after root you will probably not be able to get any official updates. This is true of the current GB update available for the i777 (KH7). Removal of bloatware will cause the update to fail.

Going back to stock is a download and Odin away.
Then you can go to the magical Official ICS that will probably not come out anytime soon.
I'm going to wait until the end of march since that is officially when Samsung says they will have it for the galaxy series. Now I know that doesn't mean squat what with carrier delays and all that crap that slows the update process down,
For what it is worth(nothing) an ATT manager told me he heard the 3rd or 4th, but If it's not by the end of "late first quarter" i'll be rooting. Just doesn't feel necessary right now since I just got this phone...by the time I get bored with it hopefully official ICS and corresponding root directions will be out.

[Q] Check For Update issue after root

hello all,
i have followed entropy512's thread here to get my at&t samsung galaxy s2 rooted with stock settings...i then wanted clockworkmod recovery so i went to this and followed directions to get everything installed...everything was ok and working until a few weeks ago when the 'Check Update' option under Setting stopped working...
basically what happens is when i goto Settings-> Software Update->Check for updates->Hit OK (Check the AT&T server for new software update?) a dialog comes up that says 'Checking for software updates...' and nothing happens...i have left the phone over night with device management app checking for software updates... when this used to work, it took less than 1 minute to check...
finally, the only way for me to stop this is to go and force stop Device Manager under Applications->All, so before i restore the phone to factory, i was wondering if anyone knows what might be the issue here?
Thanks,
FI

OTA updates require factory recovery. I'm a bit hazy on the details but I believe CWM, in short, replaces that.
It might also be because you either turned off/uninstalled or inadvertently removed factory bloatware.

This. Amongst other things. If u insist on trying to eventually upgrade to whatever crap gets pushed out to us yer best bet is to do a full wipe to completely stock firmware.

once again, the issue is not weather i should worry about updates or not nor did i search for if i should worry about updates...this option was working and something happened that caused it to stop working...and my searches i did was around getting device management to connect to the dm server (which is where the 'Checking for update' got stuck)

Do you recall all the issues with UCKK6 Gingerbread? That was an AT&T release. The devs had to tear it apart to debug and try to fix it. Any build will have bugs in it. But generally, custom firmwares will have fewer bugs than AT&T firmware.

if my research that i conducted a while ago is right, then basically samsung has implemented a flash counter which increments each time you flash a custom, non-stock rom...it might also be applied to non-stock kernels/firmwares as well (im not too sure)...so to prevent the flash counter from ever incrementing, ill need to put the phone in download mode using the jig and continue from there...

This is wrong. It is only incremented when you use ODIN to flash nonstock items. CWM has no bearing on flash counters.

You have some bad information...but I have some good news for you.
The flash counter only counts the number of times you've flashed a custom kernel in download mode via Odin. Using CWM to flash anything can't touch the flash counter. Same goes for Mobile Odin. I've been rooted and flashing for months, I don't have a jig, and my counter is still at zero.

Any GB issues only surfaced if you updated to 2.3.6. 2.3.4 for a "stock" firmware was pretty awesome. I'm on the latest ICS leak from ATT (LD4) and aside from the emmc bug (I'm using a safe kernel so I don't have it) IMHO its more complete then CM9 was. I stopped using CM9 at the end of May and don't miss it at all now.

Proper procedure to upgrade to ICS from rooted Gingerbread?

Hey Guys,
I know if I search deep enough I will likely find the answer I'm looking for but I've been unsuccessful so far and unfortunately have a tight time limit as I will be traveling abroad very soon...I'm sure this will be pretty easy to answer for the pros on here....
Anyway, Here's my question: I currently have an ATT Galaxy Note with the stock gingerbread rom installed. I've rooted the ROM and done the trick to enable Wifi tethering. I want to get the ATT ICS rom via kies on the phone but I'm not quite sure what the proper procedure is to do it without potentially causing any problems...Should I unroot the phone first? Do I have to restore back to stock? What do you recommend, thanks very much in advance for your help!

Backup device onto SD or PC first then,
1) Turn Off Device
2) Don't connect the device yet
3) Launch Kies on your desktop (full version)
4) Choose Tools, Firmware upgrade & initialization
a) Pull battery and enter the model name & S/N (ALL CAPS NO DASH!!)
b) Replace battery and boot into download mode
c) connect USB
d) It will prompt to initialize to original settings. Click "YES"
e) It will prompt to initialize the latest version. Click "YES"
f) It will download the firmware upgrade components (DO NOT DISCONNECT THE DEVICE!!)
5) It will prompt for firmware upgrade and initialization.
a) Click check box for reading above information
b) Click your choice if you want your information saved on Samsung Kies corporate servers.

Well, truth be told, it's for my father's Galaxy Note. I just want something stable that'll give him the least amount of problems. It's not very likely that i'll be keen to update it much... The only "mod" I'd likely do/need is the wifi-tethering hack. With that in mind, do you still recommend I go Jellybean? If so, which rom do I use...Thanks!
If you Want a stable and reliable build to travel with ....
Stay with ICS or GB stock rooted rom, IMHO
Ihmo ICS would be best for your father's phone.
JB is nice but still being developed for the ATT Note so you will get problems.

Because JB is still at alpha quality for the most part ....
And like me ....many users require a stable and reliable build to conduct their daily affairs, without the worry of random reboots, missing APN's, dropped calls, and missing functionality .
We all have "not " moved on to jelly bean, simply put...as it currently has some severe issues that must be worked out before any semblance of stable function can be had.
It will happen, just as soon as samsung releases a true JB build for the note 1...if they ever do ....g
Thanks
I had the same question... glad I didn't have to download the huge ATT stock ROM.
I'll try this method here tonight.
While downloading, I'm getting a time out... happened twice. When is the best time to do this? Server must be busy.
Finally, the procedure worked. Took ~3 hours... scared it was going to time-out again.

You obviously haven't tried the PA builds. They've been stable since d-day+ 2 weeks, and with the exception of the flicker issue, and which was fixed by checking a box in the developer settings panel.

Massive battery drain and JB update.

Hi,
I'm very sorry if the problem was in other topic, but I looked first 10-12 pages of topics and couldn't find anything. My wive's Motorola RAZR MAXX (european, retail,non-carrier) is still on ICS, newest software availible, but from time to time get massive battery drain from process called Multimedia. Fully charged phone can run out of battery in few hours, get hot like from the furnace and finally turn off out of "juice". We are aware of the problem, that this single process is draining the battery, since we've looked at battery manager and this process is beeing constantly restarting, causing 100% CPU usage and draining battery. Forced-close helps, but this process manage to restart in background and it's stupid to constantly closing it in task manager every time after finishing some tasks that trigger him to start again. So, are there any temporary solutions for this? Is Motorola aware of the problem and will fix this in upcoming JB update? And finally, when EU versions of RAZR/MAXX get official JB update?
Regards, Jacek

Regards, Jacek

i know, that happened to me also, but not all people get the update from the settings, so you need to flash it manually from stock recovery
here's the link for the jelly bean update:

I'm really aprreciate the help, but this firmware seems to be a leak, not the official one, so I won't risk bricking phone (wife's), especially, we've got iMac, so no windows program work on it (I presume it's needed for forced flashing via recovery) and I've never done any rooting/flashing myself. I'll have to wait for official update via OTA.
But you've mentioned, that you're familiar with the problem - was it fixed with the JB update in your case?

This may not come.
Only few ROM are updated via OTA: Retail.en.FR, Retail.en.EU, Retail.en.AU, Vodafone.en.EU.
And I think your ROM version is not one of them :/
You need to change ICS to one of upper ROM, and then you can take JB update.

Now wife has rom 672.180.41.XT910.NonEFIGSRetail.en.EU - why do You think this Rom won't be updated any time soon? I bought this phone from normal store, it has motorola warranty (non-carrier, it's not imported from foreign country), I live in Poland. If you're right how can I make the update SAFELY on on iMac? Is it possible? The problem is getting stronger everyday - process activating himself randomly and sometimes it's too late to switch it off before it do some damage to battery. It's bloody anoying!
I'm sure that ROM 672.180.41.XT910.NonEFIGSRetail.en.EU won't be updated to JB - This device will remain on Android 4.0.4 (ICS)
You can confirm that at Motorola website (Select Poland and Retail, then Motorola Razr phone):
https://motorola-global-en-roe.custhelp.com/app/software-upgrade-news/g_id/1995
You need to change ICS to one of updated ROM(Retail.en.FR, Retail.en.EU, Retail.en.AU, Vodafone.en.EU), and then you can take JB update.

I think it's not enough.
As I know you must root your ICS, install Safestrap, install new ICS(one of Retail.en.FR, Retail.en.EU, Retail.en.AU, Vodafone.en.EU), root new ICS, install voodoo ota root keeper and buckup root, install JB update, I think this would look something like this.

Why rooting? Does just installing retail version of ICS and then doing OTA update to JB won't work?

I don't think you can just install other version of ICS without rooting.
Well, it’s looks like I’m ****ed up #$% I can’t update without rooting, I can’t root and update because there is no Mac tools for doing this, Motorola won’t plan to update RAZR/MAXX in my third world country to JB (get confirmation from support), and even if I’ll ask someone to make an update for me (if I found someone from near my location who know how to do this without bricking the phone) I still loose warranty because rooting void warranty. If I know all of this earlier I wold have never buy moto phone. Support guy told me that the only thing I can do is to make a factory reset, and if it won’t solve the problem give the phone to warranty. Either way I don’t have many options here – will try to reset phone first, it doesn’t take much time and doesn’t hurt.
But have one more question (maybe lame, but I’ve never done rooting) – since the rooting void warranty, is it possible to make an update to retail.UK JB and then COMPLETELY remove root with any trails it was on phone? So I won’t lost warranty and have newest software? If yes, then it will make sense to look for someone to help me with the whole update process.

Well, friend in the earlier posts said I can't update without the root, so I'm confused. If you're right, that I'm halfway to update, since I won't void warranty updating without root. Then I have to find someone with the knowlende how to do this and PC to actually do this.

Take alook in the dev section and search rsdlite with this tool you can flash 672.180.41.en.eu (fastboot file has a different name)
There are many threads on how to
Then you upgrade to JB
Root is not needed for any of this
dude there will be some big media file on ur SD card which would be not able to read like in my case there was 1.4gb mkv video file which was not readable by mediaproces so it was constantly trying to update the gallery so becuase of such files which are unreadble causes media process to constantly run.....so check ur SD card whether u have any such file...if no then search for dev section for root and flash JB rom....
