I'm using succulents cm10 ROM and have noticed in the task manager that the used and free memory only add up to 674mb. I have the 16gb NT, so shouldn't I have closer to 1024? Anyone else notice anything funky with their ram?
I'm on VERY thin ice here, but could it be that what's showing is total RAM minus what OS uses? That would make sense with CM10 using around 300 MB.

If you would have read other posts, you would understand that cm10 uses more ram and does not show all that is installed in the device. Use the search function before asking a question. It will help all of us

I'm currently running the devil kernel on my phone, using the new devil app to control settings but I really don't know a couple settings though. First what I'd zram and is it better than swap? And what's the best value to set the zram at? I have it on 150mb.
Also what's better zram or swap?

No info about what it is in the op U_U
well, based on my reading...(Basically meaning take this with a grain of salt because I may not perfectly re-present the information, but this is how I've come to understand it lol )
zram basically compresses unused apps within the system RAM. This allows the system to swap less needed processes to the zram partition for faster access at a later time, instead of killing them. This does take up some of your ram though, so I imagine that the value you are setting is determining exactly what percentage of your ram that the zram partition is allotted.
Swap instead uses a small portion of the SDcard like RAM. The phone will attempt to keep as much within the ram as possible until fill, and then begin using the swap partition on the SDcard. At that point, the phone will begin moving inactive blocks of memory to the SD, freeing up RAM for active processes. If one of the pages on the SD needs to be accessed again, it will be moved back into RAM, and a different inactive page in RAM will be moved onto the SD ('swapped').
Swap files don't restrict available RAM but writing to the sdcard impacts the speed of opening apps.
Now, which is better? No idea ^^ Lol
Holly crap I'm enabling swap lol. Do I need to repartition my SD card for swap?
I wouldn't enable swap, you don't need it, zram us nifty but also not need. Your system can handle memory just fine without you. Just let it to its thing and you will be fine.

I agree completely. My former device had a hack that we came up with that would force app2sd on a 2.1 build. This was great at the time but it cause some serious lag. We then enabled the swap to help with the memory issues. It worked for awhile but then all these apps started to come out that were, not to sound funny, memory hogs. This device only had 128mb of user RAM, so it was a constant struggle to get it working. Gotta remember that this was pre-GB times, so Froyo was the ICS of that time.
Here is more to read from this devices section about how swap works. The thread was revived on Post #9 and my explaination is Post#16.
Moral of the story is that I agree with Eco, let the phone work for you and not you against it. There are few memory issues with the Vibrant. Is it running 2gb of RAM? No but do you really need something like that on a phone?

Exactly, Android is designed for low Memory systems. It can handle out of Memory situations on its own, and will kill unneeded apps as is necessary to free ram for running apps. Don't worry about how much "free" ram you have because it doesn't matter. You want more free ram learn to set the ram usage settings to be more aggressive at killing idle apps. It'll and up using more battery, but if free ram is what you want then that's how to do it.

Actually, yes. There are certain apps, like Facebook, Whatsapp, Skype and probably more, that have their background services running even if you close the app. Those services are for sending notification, but they are slowing down this device very much (Even if only the Facebook service is running). So I do feel the device does not handle memory so good. And I can't blame it, since it has a limited memory, but I do wish I had more RAM.
Don't enable zram or swap unless you have the EU bug or like your shizz lag like a mo'fo'. If your phone is playing nicely, then disable both. Allow Purging of Assets also.Set it to two processes in Dev Section.

Loving my device so far figuring it all out for a first time Android user, very happy. Just one main concern besides little petty ones is the available ram? Even when i first booted this thing up out of the box with nothing installed by me the Available Ram was only like 300mb out of 1gb! Telling me a couple apps running stock (which is only like 20-30mb total anyways) and the Operating System and Sense eats up about 700mb of Ram upon a fresh Boot? Damn that's pretty sad, no wonder why the industry standard for these devices should be 2gb! My iphone 4 which i came from only had 256mb of total ram installed. With all my apps installed, using up about 15gb of hard drive space out of the 16gb model i had, i still had a solid 210-220mb of FREE Ram upon Boot Up! Apple is still very behind in this cell industry but at least they know how to create an operating system that doesn't kill your Ram.
Anyway to have more available Ram on this thing? Figured 1gb would be more then plenty when purchasing this device, after using it now i guessed wrong. Now with most of the basic apps installed i average about 250-270mb of Free Ram upon Boot Up. Still think that's pretty sad when it comes with 1gb of ram built in :fingers-crossed:

Android takes apps out of memory when another app needs more ram
Trust me... 1gb is fine.. no need for another 1gb of ram
If you really want more ram either make an AOSP rom or desense your phone

So basically don't even worry about what the task manager shows as free Ram because the OS will make it work basically? Makes sense but still seems pretty hungry to eat up so much. Really love the Stock JB 4.1 and Sense 4+ so really wouldn't want to get rid of any of that just to free up some Ram. Would just think factory though it wouldn't eat so much. I'm sure once i can get this device rooted though and flashing a custom rom should help?

i think that´s because of android´s ram management.
Android doesn´t allow that there is too much "unused" RAM because "unused" RAM is useless RAM... (hope i understood that right as i read something about it some weeks ago)
but wait for a detailled explanation of someone who is fitter at this topic than me

Android does not use ram like windows. In android, having low free ram is a good sign that android is working properly. Does your device lock up or feel laggy? Exactly so don't worry

Oh ok, thank you. Learned something new today, really had no idea and makes perfect sense now. You're right though, no lag at all. I mean i don't know how to compare this device but running the game Bard's Tale with the HD download version on all High performance and having a few apps also on in the background, zero lag while playing the game! Really am impressed with this device thus far, just was worried about the Ram appearance as I wasn't aware of how Android utilizes it, thank you.
Is your phone lagging? Android does an amazing job at providing the RAM required to function properly.

Bump.
I'd like to know how much ram is available to the user. Can someone with an AT&T One X+ download Android System Info and share what the "max" is for ram? For example, on my 1GB GS2, it shows 836mb (user available).
It says I have 950 mb Ram on the android app management screen.

So has anyone tried swap on this device?
I was thinking that we might be able to increase ram operation if there was a swap partition.
I'm not exactly sure if it will work....
If anyone see's this thread and has a class 10 micro sd card and they want to try it please let me know how it affects the benchmarking results.
(I'd do it, but I have a crappy class 4)

I tried using swap for awhile on my old HD2 which only had .5gb, but not here. The question I have to ask is why? In most of the current ROMs developers have already added scripts that kill dormant processes to free up real memory. Even when I've got a dozen apps open I've got plenty of RAM available. What kind of out of memory issues are you experiencing where you think swap would help?

Well it's not exactly a out of memory problem. I just wanted to see if the performance would be affected if a linux swap partition for ram would increase or decrease the ram operation.
I know we don't have the most high end device out there, but the specs are supposed to be better than an S2, yet it surpasses ours. It has a slower processor and less 3d graphics than the amaze and still it beats it.
Ram operation on the S2 according to Antutu: 705
Ram operation on the Amaze according to Antutu: 356
That's about half!!!!!
And I'm pretty sure if we found a way to increase the ram operation it'd help with all the other results.
I don't know why this is the case, but probably has more to do with the software running on the devices than the components. Sense is a lot of things most of which are good, but one thing for sure is it's s resource hog.

I've got a phone with the same amount of RAM as you (Galaxy Nexus) and 270 MB free is pretty normal for me. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
If you're willing to give it a shot though, installing a custom kernel might squeeze you a little extra RAM. I've installed one that disables 1080p recording in exchange for a few dozen MBs of RAM; you might look into seeing if something like that is available for your phone.

Ok Dude But How Can I Find Custom Kernel For My Phone ?
Which phone do you have? You can search for it in the XDA Forums and search through the android development section for your device to find a kernel that works for you.
Why bother with how much free RAM you have?! Its the management of RAM that matters.

Is it still possible to increase the RAM size of the Poco F1? I have the 6gb/128gb variant and I want to have maybe 2 to 4gb more RAM. I read around that it can be done with a swap file on older phones but I already tried that and even added up to 6gb but it doesn't seem to get used. Is there a custom ROM or magisk zip that can be used for that? My phone currently runs on Corvus with NGK.
The reason why I want more RAM? Egg NS. My phone frequently runs out of RAM and the game force closes.
Thanks!

What are these apps and games you use?
How do you fill the entire memory?
I switched to LineageOS + NGK because it's more stable. So far I only have DamonPS2 and Egg NS installed after flashing the ROM. Had no problems with DamonsPS2 even with stock ROM. Anyway, I said before the app in question is Egg NS, a switch emulator. The app needs 8gb RAM so the Poco F1 is short of 2gb that's why it force closes randomly. I get smoother framerates compared to stock but then I still run out of RAM.
Well, short of swapping the DRAM modules for bigger ones it would be impossible, and even then who knows if it would work?
Although now that you've posted this question, I'm left wondering if anyone has successfully done this… I know that Scotty from Strange Parts (and others) have swapped NANDs for bigger storage, but RAM I've never seen.
I think ram is included in the SOC, which means cpu, gpu, controllers, everything else will be also replaced if someone were to upgrade ram, basically changing the core of the phone.
I'm trying to make it work like this one. A really old post from 2012 so I doubt it'll still work for Android 10.

In that case why don't you try zRAM instead? Depending on the kernel your zRAM (or swap, for that matter) capabilities may differ, but give it a go!
IDK about other kernel utility apps, but EX Manager has the options.
Ok I'll give that one a try. Just tried Roehsoft RAM expander and it still works but the game runs really slow when it's already using the swap memory. At least it doesn't force close now. lol
