I recently noticed my volume up button does not click, however my volume down button does click. Anyone else experiencing this? I'm thinking about taking the phone apart to check whats up. I did attempt to disassemble the phone previously but I am positive I placed everything back in place and the volume buttons worked fine afterwards. From what I know, I did not drop my phone, have the phone stuck somewhere, etc, etc.

Ok here's the thing. My phone suddenly stars acting really weird after a year of problem free use. the volume rocker started to go bonkers, almost like the downward rocker is always on. rebooting is really difficult as flashing mode turns on. The only way to turn it on is to hold the home button at the same time as the power button to turn it on.
once inside the os, the volume rocker is permanently downwards, so ringer is always at vibrate, and working with the phone is impossible.
i tried restarting quite a few times, restored original firmware and installed latest energy gtx rom, all to no avail.
i think there is a problem with the circuitry or something which might be causing this. any thoughts on how to fix this? I have had this since last november with a contract on tmobile UK. any ideas about where to get this fixed should this be a hardware problem?
thanks in advance
Yeah looks like a hardware problem with the rocker seemingly pressing the downward button all the time 24/7.
See if you can play around with it to loosen the rocker button.
Otherwise it's an open the unit to fix it which will void warranties, etc.
thanks for the reply. i'll take this to tmobile. lets hope they solve the problem.
I fell asleep next to my phone one night and when i woke up and tried to wake up my phone the volume menu opened up and acted like if i was pressing the volume bar repeatedly. I turned it off and on again and once it boots into Windows the same thing, if i try to press volume down it will and it will go right back up again. The Volume rocker button is fine and not stuck. I found out though if i hold up and down before windows mobile boots up it will allow me to operate as normal but once i let go It goes back to the volume going all the way up. I have flashed different roms to no avail.
Does anyone have any ideas to what could be causing this?
I just started having the same problem with a Samsung Omnia 7. It fell into some water, let's say it was a bucket, i pulled it apart and thoroughly dried it. Seemed to work perfectly for a few hours, now the volume thing.
Our HD2's hard buttons are not invincible and I learned that the hard way. After lots of use on my phone the send, home, end, and volume down buttons stopped working. I also believe my end button is stuck on because it always boots up on its own, meaning I can't shut it down and leave it off. I have to take the battery out of it.
My advice is if you can find a way to use "soft" buttons to navigate your phone do it and save yourself the hassle of breaking the hard ones for when you need them. Good luck!

I had a few drips of water it my hd2 and a couple days later, I rebooted and after it rebooted, the volume is stuck on UP. I took it apart. I has nothing to do with the button itself as I removed the button and it's still stuck. Still no solution yet.
Hi,
Did anyone find a solution for this? I had to hard reset my HD2 couple of days ago. After the reset, I installed all the apps, one after another. The phone worked fine for a day, until this afternoon when it started acting crazy. First symptom was that when you type some numbers of the "Phone" screen to look up a contact, I was not able to delete the using the back button. Other keys like up, down, left, right too didn't work in the SMS compose screen. I restarted the phone thinking that it would resolve the issue, but worse. The volume control showed up just after the boot and the "volume up" tone was constantly going off as though I was pressing the volume-up button constantly. I tried rebooting and remove the battery, SD etc, uninstalled few programs, but to no avail.

I dont know if its the viper rom or my phone, but either these things are sensitive as hell all of the sudden cuz of this rom or maybe its just a defective phone.
Recently my phone will be vibrating by itsself while its in my hand, and the menu button might popup or the search button. If i press the back button once, it performs like a double tap and goes all the way to the home screen lol
Has anyone else noticed this?
My HTC Hero was working fine without incident for quite some time. I did not introduce any software changes to it. But suddenly, for no apparently good reason, I'm seeing two things happening now:
Menu button pressed acts like Home button, no matter what screen you are on (this is terrible, as in some screens the menu button is required to access certain options)
Search button acts like the green call button, bringing up the recent call list and the dial menu.
Volume button decrease goes nowhere. Actually, one click bumps the volume up then down one notch. The increase button is fine. One must click and hold the decrease button to get the volume to go down.
I'm not all that bothered by the volume button, but the menu button is critical.
I searched the Internet extensively and found one other person mention this simultaneous fault of the volume button and menu button. But unfortunately, they weren't able to get a resolution, or they simply never came back to the thread to update.
I did a full shutdown and restart, but no change. The only environmental change has been an increase in humidity. I am by the shore for the weekend. I took my phone kayaking, but it was sealed in a plastic bag and never got wet. But perhaps moisture in the air has something to do with it? It does seem more like a hardware issue than software problem.
Has anyone run into this problem and been able to rectify it?
I discovered another peculiar behavior.
When the phone was idle for some time, I awoke it with the END button, then a screen swipe to get to the main screen. Pressing "Menu" brought up the proper sub menu toolbar. However, going back and pressing it again showed the wrong behavior again (acting like the HOME button).
Then for a stretch of time, if you tapped the menu button lightly and quickly, the sub menu toolbar would appear. A standard button push will cause it to act like the HOME button. But unfortunately, this did not last. I set the phone down, came back later, and this "light tap" would only act like the HOME button.
I did NOT see any erratic behavior prior to this, like the MENU button mostly working fine and only occasionally acting like the HOME button. It was a rather sudden change. Given the behavior, I'm starting to wonder if something has built up inside under the button bezel that is doing this. Perhaps taking it apart and giving it a good cleaning would resolve it?
I've been finding that every once in a while the MENU button function momentarily goes back to normal operation. It's usually after having left the phone untouched for a few hours. But it works just once or twice, then starts behaving like the HOME button. From this behavior, I can't figure out if this is hardware or software related.
Anyway... I don't see anybody having offered a solution for this, either here or on other forums. I guess I'll just have to retire this phone.
I'm really baffled by this very strange behavior.
My Hero is still experiencing this problem most of the time, but sometimes the menu button will work properly. When it does, I can click the button again in the exact same way, and it will stop working right. Other times, I can dismiss the pop-up menu, then click the menu again and it works maybe 2-3 times. Then after that, it's back to the "HOME" button behavior. Once it does it again, I cannot coax it to work properly again, no matter how many different variations I try. I have to wait for a long while before trying again and finding that it works properly again. If it was a hardware problem, the behavior should be pretty random. Given how it behaves, I have to believe this is software. Now... how the software (firmware) could become corrupt like this is beyond me. I'm thinking that maybe restoring the phone back to the original ROM and then rooting it all over again could get things back to normal... anyone reading this agree or disagree?
Try ButtonRemapper: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9399440&postcount=1
If needed, KeynrTracker.apk will allow you to identify the code for individual buttons.

Thanks for the suggestion. But somehow, miraculously, the problem resolved on its own. I guess it must be a hardware issue, as I didn't make any software changes. I can press the menu button repeatedly and it works normally now. Really weird. I guess that perhaps there was some debris or residue buildup inside that eventually worked itself out.
Ive been messing around with this for a few days now with no luck.
My was acting sluggish a few days back so i restarted it. Well low and behold Im getting the "Starting RSD protocol support" message on top of the dual core logo now.
I've searched around, and have have tried all i can think of. I have SBFed the phone multiple times, using the tutorial here, with no luck.
After SBFing the phone it just returns to the same state.
The battery IS fully charged, so we can rule that out. Maybe, just maybe, the volume toggle is stuck but it clicks up and down with no issues.
Anyone have any ideas? Ive been pulling my hair out on this one. Phone is on Verizon prepaid so its grandfathered in at 95/month UNLIMITED data , and they dont seem to willing to let me switch back to my Droid X or anything else for that matter.
Thanks in advance for anyone with ANY ideas or suggestions.
edit as a side note i have been rooted for 6 months no issue/and am on Eclipse. I had not changed any settings in a few months and had not installed any apps in a few week. This was pretty out of the blue.
My first thought (before I read you had this thought also) was that your volume up button might be stuck. Or the trigger inside anyway. If thats the case, you will probably have to find a way to get that button off but I have no idea if thats possible without breaking your phone. Other than that, I dont know what else could cause it. Especially if you SBF and it still does it.
Try this to see if you have a faulty volume button. Turn the phone off and turn it back on while holding the volume DOWN button. I forget what the first option is but it will say something at the top. first of all, if your volume button is stuck in the up position, it might start whatever the first option is. If not, press the volume down button until you get to Android Recovery. Then press up. If you do this, I'm guessing your volume up button is working as it should. Pressing up will start the recovery. When you see the triangle image, press volume up and volume down at the same time. try wiping cache and data and restart and see if that does anything.

Yeah, I should have included that, it wont go into recovery by pressing the down button while turning on. Guess it might be the actual switch. Anyone have any ideas on that?
edit And suprise if you hold the up button while turning on you get the RSD support msg! (if its working properly) Its gotta be something hardware at this point. i hope not...
Yeah, if you hold Up while powering on, it will start RSD automatically. If you hold down, it gives you other options to scroll through. It could very well be hardware related if that isnt working. Unless someone else has anything else to say about it.
