It really does seem at&t favors certain brands and pushes that on the public.

I've also seen some in Texas. Also, anecdotally two of the AT&T stores near me were completely sold out of the OG when I was trying to get my phone replaced for what the techs chalked up to a hardware issue. They are selling, but still nowhere near a similar HTC or Samsung phone in a likelihood.

Actually, even if LG unlocked it to be just like the N4 AT&T would never allow that update, they absolutely hate their users having root or anything xda generally strives for.
My guess is that, among other things, it is so easy to tether/hotspot once rooted without paying for such a plan.

I thought I was getting a steal when i bought it at best buy for 99 which turned out to be 146 due to California taxes. At Sprint, they tell us to push iPhone. If a customer wants an Android, we are supposed to push them to iPhone. I, of course, do not follow this at all and am straight up with the customers.

as far as i know, they dont have a restocking fee and the return policy is 30 days. I am more concerned whether it is even possible for me to retunr the phone and go to costco to buy a new one even though i am already locked in on contract
As long as you are in the return window, once you return it they reset your "upgrade" with ATT so you will be back to same status you were before the purchase

Does anyone have any idea what the average markup is on cell phones? They are getting damn expensive, more than tabs and laptops, and I would assume they are making a nice profit. Anyone work for a cell company that knows? I am definitely curious.

Well as far as actual unit costs of the phone, I don't know but these carriers pay a lot more for the phones than we do so they lose money on the actual sale of the phone but they make that money back and then some when we sign up for a 2 years contract or ETF's if we decide to cancel early. So I guess your question should be what is the average cost to maintain and provide service for each account and/or line.
I used to work in retail (radioshack) I don't remember what we paid for the 3d, but the evo 4g retailed at $499.99 and warehouse cost was $494.99, so profit margin isn't much at all. Carriers and retailers make money off of the contract. Usually first year is making up for the loss on the handset, and the second year is profit. Retailers like RS, BB, and WM get a commission from the carriers.

Yeah, what he said is 100% true. I believe there is some loss at the motorola, HTC, level too initially also because the cost of manufacturing the technology when brand new is high. After x number of units is sold they break even, and then the cost of manufacturing decreases and they begin raking in profits again.
The same thing happens with other technology comes out too, that's why it is so important for these companies to either have a lot of capital, or capable of borrowing the money. Once the cost of research and development is made up, and cost of manufacturing goes down they begin making lots more money. If a device was designed poorly and popularity is low they get in a pretty tight spot.

Yeah, the tech itself is pretty expensive. Retailers aren't marking up more than 1-2% initially... If they're lucky. Most hardware is like that (Aside from desktop computers, and to a lesser extent, laptops). At my last job, we were actually losing money on all the game consoles we sold (Like 1-2 dollars, but still...) and phones were even worse.
It's all a scam. There hasn't been a new phone manufactured in 15 years. All these supposed "new" phones are just refurbished Nokias, or at least they have been since '96. Google it.

what the heck are you talking about. They did not have computers with processors like the ones in our phones 15 years ago. Try using anything from then and tell me that there has been no progress. Man I hope you were kidding about this.
I know when i used to be a manager at toys r us we would only make $5 on video game systems. Our money was made on the games. In the same reasoning with the sale of phones and signing contracts. I just find it crazy some of these phones are way more expensive than laptops and the only diff sometimes is the laptop doesnt make calls

Kinda the same thing with the phones. Profit margin is EXTREMELY small on the device (unless it's Best buy) but they make up for it with accessories (which is why when you buy a phone from radioshack, if that store has a good district manager, they will try to cram accessories down your throat).
When the iPhone 4 came out, I think I read somewhere that it was costing apple around $195 to make each phone. I would imagine most phones are pretty similar. The manufacturers actually make quite a bit. The carriers and other retailers don't too much (except best buy of course).

No way the profit margins are that bad. Look at tablet prices, they for the most part are nowhere near 700 or 800. and they still make money off them and a lot of them are the same hardware as the phones with a bigger screen.

my view is different then others here, i dont care what the price markup is...i have family all over the world...it keeps me intouch with them in a instant. if the phones was 1500...i would not care. what these phones do and the time they save more then makes up for the cost. and reality is..profits are only earned if the phone is good enough...how many phones does htc make? billions in r&d...plus phones that did not sell...

Probably not losing as much as you think. Plus if you buy all the accessories and S crap they'll be making bank $$. $200 for Rezound $130 for Nexus sounds legit loool.
I'm also skeptical about this, got email from samsung and decided to search on xda and here i am. For my rezound its 200, but they are also offering $135 for my Hero S. Is this legit?
$15 for my Fascinate. Wowza. $200 for the Rez wouldnt be bad if we could get the GSM Nexus from google, but it wouldn't do much good if still w/ Verizon.
Before you guys get all excited about this, you should go to the Verizon S III forums and read about the issues that phone has. Horrible signal reception, locked bootloader, as well as other issues.

Still doesn't solve the fact that Samsung has crap radios. I have my Droid Charge as a backup still and it is night and day in radios compared to HTC phones. Unless you go GSM, forget about it.

This is interesting...it appears Samsung is going for market penetration with the phone and trying to get as many people on the phone as they can, then allowing customers to sell to customers. Only downside I've heard is the signal quality, and even that I've only heard about on the forums. I can't tell you how many people I know have switched to the GS III. And every one of them is just giddy about their new GS III. This is people who previously couldn't care less about their phone, very non-technical. At least in my smallish circle, it's quickly becoming the iPhone of Android. Wonder if that's Samsung's plan...
Don't get me wrong, I'm quite happy with my Rezound with no intention of changing. Just making an observation.

If I had the cash I'd pick it up for $100, I'm in a weird spot with my contract, I'm on an "independent third-party" contract from when I worked at a radioshack. Basically we had a sprint representative handle our contract, I know I don't have insurance on my phone, and given what has happened with this it sure would be handy to have a backup phone I can activate immediately, without having to worry that they'll bump my rate plan up, since I no longer work at radioshack.
But alas, and alack, I don't have the dough for it right now.

I've heard the advertisement concern a few times, but I'm not sure why. I've seen a bunch of TV commercials here in Atlanta for it. And that's even with DVR'ing almost all of our shows.

I really really want this phone, but on Verizon my family and I have the grandfathered-in unlimited data plan. However this means getting phones off-contract and bringing them to Verizon, because if we upgrade through Verizon we'll be moved to the tier system, and we would very much not want to do that (as a family we use around 12GB a month, which is above the highest tier of 10GB)
So, I found it on craigslist for $425. Worth it? Any good upcoming deals on sites to get the phone cheaper than that off-contract?

Any answer you get would be just opinion and since you're in g2 forum most will probably say yes. What's important to you in a phone? I personally think the g2 is worth every penny but if you want a phone that is on the latest software and youre not interested in the LG extras get the nexus 5. Battery, the Screen, IR blaster, speaker, I really like the UI I could go on and on. With that being said I like the n5 also I just think the G2 is a much better overall phone.

I paid $430 on ebay for new in box AT&T 32gb black last week. Seems to be the going rate. I'm really enjoying it.
I just got a g2 on ebay brand new sealed box white 32gb for 400
I got mine for $410 + $10 Swappa fee on Swappa the other week, your price is very good too
