Had to go through this with the crappy HTC Thunderbolt on AOSP
Why is the grass always greener? When I had the Thunderbolt it felt like all the Samsung devices (S2, S3, Note 1) all were steamrolling the ROM scene flawlessly without error. Was really hoping the Note 2 would feel like that for a change =/

Try downloading this and seeing if it can get you a lock. I used to use it on aosp roms on my gs3 so I wouldn't have to go back to stock.

For some reason gps is a total ***** to get working on a non-aosp phone, running aosp. I think it is because their drivers are looking for touchwiz specific stuff. Seems like most phones are plagued with this issue at some point.
Wouldn't the gs3 have the same problem? Did they fix it?

GPS with CM 10.1 nightly 2/21
I'm running the 2/21 CM 10.1 nightly and GPS is still wonky for me. Can't get a lock unless you turn off network and WiFi assist. I'm wondering if others are having the same issue but no one seems to be talking about it in the dev section. Been on CM 10.1 from the start. BT is great now but GPS is still a no-go for me.
Edit: tried fixes 1 & 2 from the Q & A and so far nothing.

On the latest nightly's (I believe starting from 2/17) GPS has been fixed, the issue before was that if you had WiFi and Mobile network location on it would not lock, but like I said it has been fixed and works exactly like it should. I can now get a lock in under 5 seconds outdoors and within 30 seconds indoors.

Hi,
I'm using TeamWhiskey Froyo Rom and wondered if there is a later version that is recommended as daily driver. I see there are plenty of 4.x roms, but anyone is stable and good enough to replace the Froyo?
Thx.

Pick anyone, it's better for sure. I use Kingsoft Miui on Semaphore kernel, I know it's way better than Bionix 1.3.1 or Biwinning or no matter what Froyo you can think of. Go ahead, it's time to upgrade.
+1, all of the 4.1.2 ROMs , IMO, are stable. There has been great progress with GPS in these ROMs as well. Upgrade, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
I am Jack's smirking revenge.
Thx guys, I'll try to upgrade, got bored already with Froyo...

And also uninstalled the GPS Status app I had, it seemed to be interrupting the gps from working well. That's it, hope all problems are gone now...

Be warned that gps fixes that replace blobs can mix badly with emergency dialing and can cause intermittent (and in at least one case constant) RIL crashes when dialing an emergency number.

Also intermittent means it could work 90% but crash 10% of the time, so one test may not be conclusive. But frankly, I'm not sure if SlimBean uses the right libraries in the first place. prbassplayer/kravind can correct me if I'm wrong though.
How a 911 call is different from a regular call anyway? Why if regular numbers are working 911 won't?

Samsung used a special RIL request code for emergency numbers, so when we detect an emergency number, we use that code. When it does an emergency call it uses a command related to GPS and if the GPS libraries are out of whack, then the RIL can crash or receive corrupt GPS readings.
And also, 911 has to work even if no SIM card is present.

I don't think that's possible since you change your location.
You can use an external GPS which will surely provide a better lock than the internal GPS.

While browsing a bit last night I luckily stumbled across a recovery flashable zip that fixed all my GPS issues on AOSP. I had previously tried all the other fixes that have been posted thus far and none worked on the 20130601 VRB nightly, the previous VRB nightlies, any of the PA releases, or any of the other various AOSP ROMs.
In the post it states that this will work with any of the t0lte phones, the VZW Note 2 is the t0ltevzw for those of you who have only heard of it referred to as the i605, so I gave it a shot and lo and behold my GPS locked within 5 seconds where it previously wouldn't even pick up any satellites.
So those of you having the same problem try flashing this:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/40116-42...de-hello-halo-0604/page__st__490#entry1184057
Here is a link to it in my Dropbox for those of you who would rather not use Rootz:
http://db.tt/PnvlFhgy
The way I flash it and the way I have always gotten it to work is to open Maps first, click the GPS shape to get it to find you, wait until it says "Unable to locate", reboot directly into recovery, flash this fix WITHOUT WIPING ANYTHING, reboot and open Maps, profit. When you are testing Maps after you flashed the fix make sure you are outside to give it the best possible chance to find satellites. If it still locks show but you are getting a lock try using FasterGPS from the Play Store to change your GPS.conf, to do so open the app, grant it superuser privileges, and select the correct continent and region under NTP Server. It should be North America for the continent and United States for the region unless you are using the i605 out of country, if you are using it out of country then select the appropriate continent and region.
I didn't create this nor in any way, shape, form, or fashion take any credit for this fix, the credits go to alba on Rootz. The only thing I have done is post it here so hopefully the people with GPS issues will see it and finally be able to use it.
EDIT:
For those of you that flash this please leave a comment starting if it did or did not work and what ROM and kernel you're using. If you haven't flashed a kernel then just put something like "using kennel that came with ROM." This way maybe we can see which ROMs it works with and which it doesn't so hopefully we can troubleshoot it and get your GPS working.
Also if the fix doesn't work download GPS Status or GPS Toolbox from the Play Store and see if your phone is even seeing the satellites. If it is it will show you something along the lines of either 0/0 or 0/x# of satellites. I have included some screenshots to show you how to find the number of satellites in GPS Status.

You might try reflashing the ROM, dirty flash it over itself. Of course make a nandroid first.

I have no issues with any Verizon based roms such as Clean or Beans, but any ported or intnl rom I cannot get the GPS to come on or get a fix. I have tried every fix that I can find applicable to Note 2 and even some s3 on every forum that has come up in searches. Would love to use Novella, but still looking for a fix that will make this dang Verizon Note 2 work. Tried different firmware/basebands, replacing or adding the proper libs, getting a fix on a different rom then flashing, GPS fix trick with restore, still no dice. I am still looking for something that will work. Even tried the "press upper right corner thing" and tighten screws. And combinations of all those things. I know its not a GPS problem with hardware as it works on every Verizon based rom. Good luck...I am still looking.
