[Q] new OTA update - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I have been seeing a lot of stuff about the update and I was wondering what exactly I should do about it. Currently I'm on cleanROM 4.0.5 with twrp installed, do I need to do the OTA update if I like what I have now? If so should i revert back to stock firmware before doing it? Is the new update rootable/does it come with a differently locked bootloader? Thanks

•Question•

I had a thought that came to my mind.
I understand that the big issue with the rollback is the bootloader or w/e
I'm so tired of my v1 of the 2.1 leak.
Is it possible to use an image of the OTA 2.1 since I'm assuming the bootloader from the OTA and the leak is the same....
Any ideas?
Re: •Question•
You would think so but issue with bootloader is they are the same version with s- on. With that the device assumes the its is same version as leak and you get an error when trying to flash. Say in version you are trying to load is older than the one you have. If that weren't true then rooting would be possible on the leak. Sorry.

I'd think you should be able to flash the OTA update. Since you're on leak v1, you stand to get quite a few improvements and bug fixes, at the very least. It won't help you root unfortunately, but it would still be an upgrade for you, if you don't mind a brand new flash.
Re: •Question•
Yeah you would think but ota has lower version of bootloader. The leak has 1.49 and ota has 1.46 or 1.47. And device assumes ota is older version of Android. The only version you can flash once on leak is desire ruu which is a new release. There is I post for it in the Android development forum.

What about leak v3? It's basically the same as the OTA and you should be able to update to that.
Re: •Question•
Download ROM HERE
It seems to be a Verizon Droid Eris 2.1 Official ROM.

Yes you can use leak version 2 or 3. Or the release which they are installing on all phones as they produced them in Feb. Before Eris got discontinued.

Alright so if I'm reading all this correctly I should be able to flash into a newer leak...
Does anyone have any idea how I'm supposed to do this?
Do I flash to Leak V3 or to the desire ruu rom?
Thanks for all the great answers by the way.
From the looks of things I'm not as stuck as I thought I was.

If i were you i would flash with the RUU rom.
Granted they're both the same OS, its the official one from Verizon.
Better safe than sorry

Yep thats what I did. I put the RUU over Leak v3 and at the least I am "offical" now since I couldnt do anything anyway (root, etc). Simple process with the RUU.
Can someone point me in the right direction as to how I use the Ruu?
Do I install it on my computer first or just put it directly onto my SD card like with the v1 rom?

N/M (whoops - didn't see you got it done above. good deal.)

Is it possible to take a OTA update while rooted?

Is it possible to take a OTA update while rooted? I am still on the stock Rom. And if so, will it unroot me?

Nope I believe that is one of the benefits of s-off

Wrong!
You can take the update, it will unroot you, AND if the new update includes a new HBOOT it will flash over and give you a security warning and/or S-ON.
your best bet is to wait a few hours and someone will make a rooted version of the new ota... but chances are we will have the ota update weeks before it is ever pushed to any non rooted phones... at the moment .6 is stock.. and all the roms are .9 so all I"m waiting on is a new radio update to hopefully fix this wacky 3g signal I get

If it detects you are a lower version then the OTA it will still attempt to upgrade.
Ok. From what I understand, the OTA won't automatically install if I am rooted. Which is good. But if I wanted to I could force the OTA to install?
But from what some people in this thread say, it's not worth it, and I could just get a unrooted version of the OTA from here at some point?
Is that all correct?
I am only interested because I heard there was a big OTA coming on the 16th, and I expect that it will fix a bunch of random stuff on the TB. So I'd like to get it.
I'm pretty sure you need to have stock recovery installed to install the OTA. If using CWM it will not install.
Wow this is interesting...i flashed a new radio yesterday is this the new ota update.
jcase said he thinks the leaked ruu is supposed to be the first OTA.

Ge the OTA, i relocked....

I relocked, will this allow me to get the ota?
If not will i have to download and flash the official build in ph98 form?

right. need to be re-locked and stock non rooted.
I do not understand why you would want to unroot and unlock to get the OTA "when released". In about a day after it is released I am sure a Dev will have a flash-able version posted.
Maybe but since we don't have s-off don't we have to relock to flash the new firmware and radios? Hopefully we have s-off before official update comes.

I didn't think it mattered if you were rooted or not. I thought the things required to get an OTA update from Verizon were:
1. LOCKED or RELOCKED
2. Stock Recovery
3. Close to Stock ROM
Somebody please correct me if I am wrong...

Wierd, I read a few posts in another topic that said you had to be locked or relocked in order for the new radio to flash...
What about me?
Well my bootloader screen at the top says ***tampered with*** and then under it says ***re-locked*** and rom is a "clean rom" (ICS based). I purchased (expecting a stock device) and it turned out to be rooted/flashed. What I'm wondering is when Verizon HTC releases the "official" ICS update, will it come to my phone? If so, this would be the quickest fix for me to get stock again. I'm not concerned with "bloatware" etc, I just want things Verizon/HTC stock. I don't download enough apps to be concerned about bloatware and internal space etc. So from what I'm reading here, being "re-locked" and having a flashed rom that's close to being stock should allow me to still get the update, am I correct?
In short, what I mean is, will the update come to my phone like it has done previous android devices (that weren't flashed)? Or will I have to flash another OTA based cooked rom AFTER the official one comes out and someone "cooks" it?
You will not get the OTA if you are rooted, that's for sure. If it's the stock ROM, you'll get the option to update, but it'll fail during the installation. I've seen it happen on a few HTC devices and even my rooted Xyboard tablet lol. But, just to be safe if you DO want the OTA, install the stock ROM (If you're on an ICS ROM, you're going to have a tough time getting back to stock. It's bricked a lot of people's phones. You have to restore the firmware yourself, I think.) and relock your bootloader. Don't be worried if it says **Security Warning** this simply means that your bootloader has been unlocked at one point in time.
Just make sure your phone is on a stock, non-rooted ROM with your phone locked to make sure you have no issues. Better safe than sorry.
lol?

I returned a rezound with cleanrom in it.... XD. probably not urs but jsut a question.... is the menu button dim compared to the others?
relock/unlock
You do not need s-off to relock. I unlocked and installed scotts cleanrom. I then a month later relocked installed the leaked OTA ICS update so i could have the new radios. Then unlocked again and installed the cleanrom DE senseless yesterday and i am loving it btw! I get decent battery too (13+ hours with moderate use)!

[Q] Update Fail and Bootloader Lock?

I try to apply the update from Verizon but it just says update failed. Does it have anything to do with me using Exynos abuse from chainfire?
And I've heard that the update will lock the bootloader. Should I change to a custom recovery before I apply the update?
Did you fix the exploit which you can do with that app? If yes that is probably why it is failing. If you want to rom you should not take this update until you see someone has busted into the new bootloader.
Why would you take the ota? It adds no functionality and just locks up your phone

Like an idiot, I saw the OTA and got all excited. Without doing any research, I flashed back to stock and applied the update. Needless to say I am now boot loader locked and I can't feed my flashing addiction.
My only excuse is that I'm a recent iPhone convert, so my brain is still probably addled...

I'm also I recent convert from iPhones...I dodged the OTA bullet by a couple days. Have had the phone for weeks, but just finally rooted, unlocked and flashed a ROM...right before this nightmare started. I'd rather be lucky than good.:good:

Adryn posted a safe OTA flashable zip using TWRP in the General section. And yes you will need an unlocked bootloader to use custom recovery. If im correct you should be able to remove the Exynos patch and then unlick and root using Adams Casual method which gives you TWRP. Youll have to update TWRP (I used GooManager to update to latest Twrp) in order to apply the safe update.

[Q] Question about restoring with LGNPST and future ota updates

Excuse my newness but this is a bit confusing. Since I have flashed my phone back to stock from being rooted/unlocked using LGNPST, not using my original bootloader backup from freegee or anything like that...just straight from the tutorial in irc, the rom and all....will i be able to get an at&t jellybean update ota when they finally decide to release it? It seems there was an OTA update to E97011c and I am at E97010o right now and it says no update available. Does that mean I can't get ota updates now? I can't seem to find a direct answer to this.

you should be able to flash the new ROM through lgpnst and mabey the ota. I think there was a problem with the latest ota for people rooted and unrooted.... And there should be custom ROMs based off of the new release that you could flash through recovery if I'm not mistaken

Right, but does unlocking/rooting/installing canadian JB, then unrooting and relocking bar me in any way from receiving future offical ota updates from at&t? I've probably been phrasing the question wrong
You will be able to ota. The process the use to tell if you are eligible is just odd, so sometimes it can take a few days / weeks to get it.
