[Q] About using 3G. - LG Optimus L9 P760, P765, P768, P769

This is my first time having a 4G T-Mobile device. I managed to turn off the 4g, but is there an option to use 3G on these phones? Are 2G and HSPA+(besides wifi)the only options we have?

L9 is not 4G (LTE) device. It seems T-Mobile is giving marginally faster 3G (HSDPA) and calling it as 4G (LTE). L9 does not have LTE hardware at all. Check manual by LG, they never call it 4G device. Seems T-Mobile is trolling with its customers since long time with this term though their speed is good.

I never thought it had LTE. From trying a speed test, the speed was comparable to Sprint wimax. I still call it 4G even if it's not "true 4g". Thanks for the clarification, that's understandable.

The sad truth is Sprint's wimax and the currently deployed LTE iterations aren't 4G either. T-Mobile's LTE rel. 10 will be 4G.

AT&T Titan Lies about 4G Service...

SO, I have a Samsung Focus and I have a HTC Titan (both AT&T Branded). I also have a AT&T 3g Microcell.
BTW, Has anyone seen an AT&T Titan show 3G at all or anything other than 4G?
Anyways... Here is where the AT&T Titan lies about 4G service.... the 3G Microcell only support a maximum of UMTS. It does not support HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA, HSPA+, or LTE. Only HSPA+ & LTE are official 4G technologies as classified by the ITU.
On my girlfriends and my phone (when attached to the microcell) it shows 4G (we both have Titans). And Yes, I am positive we are on the microcell since both our phones list AT&T Microcell as the carrier.
I think AT&T is starting to pull one over on people with the Titan. Wish I had a Focus S to verify what it says too....
It has been reported that ATT is branding some H devices as 4G, not even H+... but the Titan is indeed H+. I haven't been very far with my Titan yet, so I wouldn't know if it ever shows 3G.
I may be a bit confused with the network types; to my understanding there is
GSM
Edge
3G
H
H+ (aka '4G')
4G LTE
My HTC Titan has shown E for the Edge network as it has also displayed 4G for HSPA + as well.

I know the Titan does have the HSPA+ capability, that was not my gripe. My grip is that AT&T is listing a true 3G network as 4G which is a bold faced lie altogether and causes us to question if we truely are on 4G or not. Not the fact the device support it or not.
SO, all these throttling threads and stuff about 4G can not use the Titan as a testing source as the tester can not trust if they truely are on 4G or not. Thus skewing true testing results and perceived capabilities.
I live in Las Vegas and AT&T has had HSPA+ for a while and recently LTE. The issue I have, is I can't tell which network I am on wether it be 3G, HSPA+ or LTE since the Titan always will show 4G for all of them.
As added info for you about network types, your 3G disgnation is the same as the network types that I listed. 3G Network types include (In order of evolution):
UMTS - True Desgination for 3G
HSDPA - 3.x
HSUPA - 3.x
HSPA - 3.x
The 3.x is where I am not sure about the history of their release but I know one of them was refered to 3.5g before the true 4g designation came out for HSPA+ & LTE.
I don't think the titan has lte support, so you're definitely not on that.
The best way to go about this I guess is finding the diagnostic menu: where you dial some number and it gives you hidden info and options.

AT&T GoPhone Service here with X310e from Europe, it stay on H all the time, displayed as "3G" sometime.
maybe the way they display the icon on the Europe Phone is different.
Anyone confirm as H is HSPDA+?
BTW, i don't download torrent on my phone either.
Its not exactly a lie. Yes, 4G is now the old 3G. When the other carriers started calling their service 4G, it made AT&Ts service look slower (when reality is that ATT 3G was the fastest).
4G was supposed to be LTE, but the marketing departments screwed that one by trying to one-up each other.
So, the answer is that where you saw 3G previously, you will now see 4G.
I have two microcells and they both show 4G on my Titan as well.
Blame the marketing departments (at all the carriers) for using the 4G moniker where it did not belong.
LTE will hopefully be LTE.
I've seen E, H & 4G on my at&t Titan
You see H? That's a good sign, at least; we can differentiate from E, H and H+. My town is fairly rural and is also a historical district, so I find it extremely suspect that there is 4G wherever I've gone, but I guess we've somehow become modern.
I have also never seen "H", only E and 4G, but I've only been in 3 small towns since I've had my Titan. My "4G" speeds are very 3G-like too... (between 1-2Mbps down and .75Mbps up)
Is there any way to see more detailed radio information in the OS? I dont really trust the indicator at the top of the screen.
As someone quoted the ITU designations. In their final decission it was declared that only technologies being theoretically able to reach speeds of up to 100 Mbps are actually 4G.
This means that WiMax, LTE and HSPA+ don't qualify as 4G. Currently LTE Advanced and WiMax 2 would be the only ones.
The idea of calling HSPA+ 4G as far as I know originates from T-Mobile USA as they are not about to deploy LTE/Wimax anytime soon.
That's even beyond the point. Didn't ATT say HSPA+ users should see actual speeds of around 6Mbps? Many aren't even getting the upper range of "3G" speeds.
I just got off the phone with ATT CS and he did tell me I am NOT in a 4G area, even though my phone is saying so. He told me the nearest 4G area was about 20 minutes south, which is exactly what their data map shows. From that I take that ATT is just calling their 3G network 4G, at least on this phone.

That is false, the ITU adjusted this decision and enveloped HSPA+, Wimax and LTE into the 4G fold.
"As the most advanced technologies currently defined for global wireless mobile broadband communications, IMT-Advanced is considered as '4G,' although it is recognized that this term, while undefined, may also be applied to the forerunners of these technologies, LTE and WiMax, and to other evolved 3G technologies providing a substantial level of improvement in performance and capabilities with respect to the initial third generation systems now deployed,"
http://www.itu.int/net/pressoffice/press_releases/2010/48.aspx
In relation to this post, I have used my Interop Unlocked Focus all around this area and home. On my Focus I enabled the ability for it to show 3G+ areas and I was able to map out areas that were E, G, 3G and 3G+
However, when I trek those same areas with my Titan, I see a somewhat magical "4G" over all 3G and 3G+ areas.
Whether these areas were all H+ capable the whole time is unsure, but somehow I tend to doubt it.
As of yet, I have never seen 3G but I have seen E and G on my Titan.

I just tried that on my Titan by dialing ##3282#, and all the diagnostics are for 3G, HSDPA, no item for HSPDA+, still on screen my phone shows 4G.
arg... is there any way to infiltrate ATT's customer support and actually talk to an engineer, no tricks or PR crap?
I just thought that I'd chime in and say that my HTC Titan shows "3G" when I am at my place of work in Franklin Lakes, NJ.... so it must say 3G for some networks at least.
Do you have an unlocked international phone or an ATT phone?
Is there a Registry Editor for the Titan yet? If so, I wonder if you can change the 4G to what you want it to be like you can on the Samsung Focus? On the Focus, you have the option to change each individual network to show whatever you want it to show.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Connectivity \CellularUx\DataConnectionIcon
6G Speeds on Samsung Focus
Using ATT's methods, I've modified my Samsung Focus to receive 6G Speeds. Yes, this is the SAME method ATT uses to get 4G speeds...
They just edit the Registry like I did.

[Q] Why doesn't Sprint keep Wimax and do LTE on E4GLTE??

Just wondering why Sprint doesn't continue to use Wimax on devices like the E4GLTE? With GSM carriers they're incorporating 3g along with HSPA+ and rolling out LTE (AT&T), wich is great because between all 3 options you should be able to get some awesome data speeds pretty much all the time. Wouldn't it be great if you lived in a Wimax area with LTE you could fall back on one or the other depending on wich had a stronger signal. Im just wondering why Sprint is not going this route. With all of the reviews of the E4GLTE the one resounding fact is that there is currently no LTE anywhere and 3G speeds are horrid. It seems like keeping Wimax and using it when you can would have been a good option, at least temporarily. Any ideas?

Well...umm...
1. Wimax requires a different radio. LTE is built into the CPU, so you'd have to have a separate chip for wimax.
2. Wimax sucks. Its only claim to fame is that it was the first 4G available. Building penetration is crap.
3. Having both in the phone would cause power drains like you wouldn't believe.
4. Sprint is shutting down Wimax to focus on LTE. I imagine the expense of keeping both running is pretty high.
Just sit back and be patient. LTE will be there soon enough. Or stick with your current wimax phone and wait until you have LTE to upgrade. If your main reason for the upgrade is LTE then you should reconsider your options.
Remember HD DVDs? and BluRay? Which one is still around?
Also, Plasma, DLP, LCD, LED technologies in TVs. Its a 'technology war' thing.
WiMax and LTE were two technologies like this. LTE won as BluRay did and to keep up, Sprint has to rebuild their network. Also, the reasons stated above in smw6180's post.
I actually could care less about which one I have as I'm on wifi most of the time. This was truly "Just a question". But isn't HSPA+ a dead technology but its still being included into GSM devices even the ones with LTE. Im just wondering why it is and Wimax isnt. And where I'm at Wimax is awesome I get anywhere from 4-8mbs when im on it.

HSPA+ isn't dead at all. The rest of the world uses it. Try a T-Mobile or At&t phone on HSPA+ 42.

I most certainly would love to. I hope the International GS3 has HSPA+ and I can get it unlocked and use it on T-mobile. I miss GSM but dont really care much for ATT and I read somewhere T-Mobile is revamping there prepaid data plans, so hopefully I will get to try it out.

Totally agree, and number "2" is definitely a must for me I have tested it here and wimax well you said it, and more now is adding both radio and battery on-board will give a A+ with power as well

GSM carriers include 3g, HSPA+, and LTE because HSPA+ is an extension to 3G, using the same radio. Therefore there are still only two radios in the device: WCDMA (which is 3G with HSPA+) and LTE. Sprint's doing the same thing - their equivalent is having 1xAdvanced, EVDO rev B, and LTE.

No, HSPA is in its own class of speed, CDMA doesn't have anything close to it. And it's not like sprint's network could handle much anyway, since there's plenty of dirtbags abusing the Unlimited service.

[Q] No 4G???

A friend I work with just got the EVO 4G LTE and he is coming from the OG EVO 4G. He got 4G on his old phone where we are at but he can not get 4G on the new EVO 4G LTE. Is it because the old EVO did wimax and the new one doesnt have a wimax chip in it, only LTE and they have not upgraded to LTE in our area yet? And he has LTE/CDMA selected under mobile network settings.
you are right this phone has no wimax only 3g that's why people who got wimax capable phones still using then cause sprint 3g is a joke they should be ashamed at calling this 3g. I just came to sprint three weeks ago from TMobile. TMobile edge/2g Network blows sprint 3g away i mean if you compared the three g speeds of TMobile it's faster than wimax and if you compared TMobile hspa to sprint Wimax it make that look slow. I didn't know sprint was thus bad our i would of stayed i just got tired of TMobile not getting any good phones.

then that is probably the deal. i have Verizon, so dont really keep up with what is going on with Sprint around my area, but i have not heard of them getting LTE around here yet. i am just north of houston, they may have it down in houston, but houston always gets new things, then my area gets it shortly after as they start to expand out. i know verizon and att have their LTE working here. but you are right about Sprints 3G speeds, i downloaded speedtest on his phone and it took like 3 minutes. haha

Which is ironic, as every carrier should be ashamed of calling whatever their top service is "4G". If you had actual, true-to-spec 4G service, you'd need a new pair of pants.

Technically Sprints WiMax was closer in terms of Spec than any carriers LTE or hspa+. But with almost no backhaul improvements over 3g, piss poor rollout speed, and craptastic implementation, it was doomed to fail. LTE gives us 3.5G. LTE advanced will bring us true 4G with LTE tech. Sadly I'm not sure we will ever see it, or be able to afford it with the way carriers are treating data plans.
With true 4G you'll be able to burn an AT& T data cap in 10 minutes and Verizons in 30 minutes. By this time I assume network vision will have failed miserably and Google will have purchased Sprint for pennies and made a prepay carrier full of Android badassery.... At least that's what I'm hoping for.

That is not true. Not a single LG optimus L9 variant regardless of model or network supports LTE. However they are capable of running 4g just not 4g LTE. The 4g runs off HSPA+ not LTE. Even the LG optimus L9 II uses HSPA+ for the 4g network.
T-Mobile USA seems to define 4g their way. Something like gsm, umts, hspa & cdma, that makes four.

Thats all the radio bands the device can pick up. 4g acctually runs off the hspa. If you change your prefered network to gsm/cdma or umts only or auto it will not connect to 4 g. In order to connect to 4 g you must select hspa+ auto or wcdma+ auto. I couldnt connect to 4g when i first got my phone and its because the prefered network was set to gsm/cdma (auto). I get the best speed on wcdma+(auto). That will make it connect to the fastest radio band available. My phones a t-mobile but I unlocked it and switched to at&t because tmobiles data speed was horrible. I would average .20 mbps - 2.25 mbps (bits not bytes) with tmobiles 4g. On at&t I get 12mbps to 25 mbps and have even got as high as 40mbps right in town. Thats just in my area however, im sure tmobile has good speed in certain areas. After switching to at&t it made me miss my lg p870 I gave my girl because its LTE and she gets anywhere from 20-50mbps!?

Not when I only get 1 bar of it and full 3G bars from what i've experience on custom ROMS.
I dont think there is even icon for 3G in factory tmobile room. 3G and 4G pretty much fell under 4G. If you want to limit yourself to 3G only you may have to research some other forums with 3G tmobile phones and find older apn setting. They should work with S5 just with limited bands. I remember from my Note 2 days that for a while older apn (4G) worked much faster than newer fast.tmobile lte apn.

Tmobile does have 3g. What happens is during inactivity the connection falls back to 3g to save battery, and transfer very small amounts of data. When demand calls the connection than hops over to Hspa. Tmobile does this transparently to the end user on most devices. This is what they call there 4g network.
If you use international roms, you'll see the indicator change between 3g and H all the time. Same with the nexus line of phones.
