Weird icon in the status bar - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

My dad - a fellow VZW Note 2 owner - had me explain the recent OTA to him. He also had a few other questions about the device, which i was able to answer easily, except for one. There's an icon in the status bar (with signal stregnth, battery, ect) that he had no idea what was, and i frankly had no idea either. so i s-pen-cropped it out and blew it up, and im attaching it here for you guys to check out. what is it? i honestly never gave it a second thought until now.

That icon is so that you know your phone is sending your location when you call 911. It doesn't mean that you're dialing 911 or on the line with them right now of course but if you did they would know your location as long as you see that icon which can't be disabled. Most custom roms I've seen get rid of the icon and there might be some mod's for stock but mind you it just won't display the icon but the location info will still be sent to 911.

That's mostly correct, the cross looking this is the E911 location the signal looking bars indicates you have at least one of the gps options selected even if gps is turned off.

It has to do with a location service, most likely VZW location service.
If anybody knows for sure, please correct me.
I have never seen it myself since I always disable their services and use Cell/WiFi and the GPS radio.

Ah, that would explain why I never saw it as I flashed a custom ROM within 30 minutes of owning the phone.

GPS always on?

When I select "Standalone GPS"under settings, the two lines are always showing next to the location icon. However, with the other two GPS settings selected, nothing shows next to the location icon, is it actually using battery with that on?

That is normal...even on non smartphones...it is 911 location services and no it doesnt consume more battery with the crosshair indicator there and no actual satelite usuage indicator... it remains dormant until called up.
Ok, thanks. I just thought it was odd that it looked like it was sending out signal with either the Standalone GPS or Verizon Location setting enabled.

i cant speak to whether its drawing power, but if you open maps, nav, or something else that uses gps you will see a different icon come up indicating data transfer to/from sats
Should i leave the vz and google location services also toggled on? Or will this also save battery if i leave it off?

you dont need vz location services unless you use their products i would think. i leave google services on so i can atleast get a general idea where i am on the google maps.
Yeah google location services is all you need. I think weather widget uses it as well so you need something to be on.

Yeah, I know, I'm no newcomer to the Android platform, but I didn't have this icon on my OG Droid, and this was a different icon than the standard location icon, so that's why I asked.

Wifi strength and power widget

Hello,
i just bought the Razr and coming from teh original Milestone/Droid, the wifi signal is extremely weak! Almost not finding networks when the previous phone had 1 bar at that point.
Any suggestions for settings? What is peer-to-peer exactly? Shall i select specific channels for this?
Also the power widget in the notification bar is not a default thing in Motorola?
Is there a way to include it there?
Thanks!

Might be an issue hardware-wise. The range on my laptop wifi card is worse than my razr which is surprising. You said that your previous device had 1 bar of signal, I've found that if the razr doesn't have a good enough signal it will drop the connection. Mostly because a 1 bar signal is going to go slow as hell. You may want to try upgrading the router you're using.
Peer to peer I'm assuming is an adhoc network which is computer --> computer instead of router --> computer, amazing for sharing files but no connection to the internet.
Channels on the phone or the router? If you run a program called inSSIDer on your laptop you're able to see the wireless networks around you and how much interference they area creating. Run inSSIDer and see which channel has the least amount of interference and try setting your router to to that channel, your range should increase significantly.
As far as the power widget goes, my phone it was not default. Although that could be different on different carriers
Basically in the advance settings there is an option for peer to peer which had options for different channels that is why I was asking.
For sure the wifi is worst than my milestone..
The previous post has got you covered.
As for the power controls in the notification bar, you've got two option afaik:
1-Flash a mod, easily found in the development forum in a thread that combines all ROMs,MODs, and Hacks for the RAZR/MAX.
2-Install an app, the one I used is termed Notification Toggle and made by the dev J4vellin.
you can search for the app in gplay or XDA forums. Goodluck.

Yes the RAZR is known to have some serious wifi issues
Thanks guys for confirming it... unforfunately this was a point that i didnt read before purchasing it.
I dont want to start new topics, so can i ask somethings here?
- can the battery icon be shown with a percentage?
- can we edit number of pages on default launcher?
- can we disable the network name on the top of notification bar?

All of those can be done with applications which one will be up to you. The best I'd say for free would be GO Power (for the percentage), and GO launcher (for more home screens). As for the carrier name, check out the development sub-section to this forum, there was an app called "carrier name" that allowed you to change it however I haven't had any success with it. I'm hoping the ICS update won't have the carrier name slapped all over it but who knows
Cool thanks
I just dont want to root yet, wantto feel it as it is a bit
Hi. Please excuse the thread hijack. I am also suffering terrible wifi performance. Does anyone expect it to improve with the impending update or should we be looking into warranty repair?

Sorry sir, I should have mentioned you need to be rooted for that app. As far as I know there isn't a way to change the carrier name without being rooted
Have those problems too. I don't think there will be a fix, I bet the antenna is just rubbish.
To get the best wifi performance (not only with the razr, but the impact on the razr and the wifi speed is much more significant than on other devices), try using your router with just one wifi standard (e.g. only n, g or b and not a compatible mode that enables all of those 3).
Don't use the auto channel configuration in your router. To get to know which channel will work the best for you, get Wifi Analyzer on the play store (can't post link because I'm <10 posts. Remember: The reception of the razr is bad, so better use another Android device to do this or look for a computer application. iirc there's a software called inSSIDer that can do this too) and find out 1. which channels are used less by your neighbours and 2. which channel Wifi Analyzer suggests to you (Menu -> View -> Channel rating). In germany for example, nearly nobody uses channel 13, except for me. There are about 25 access points available in my apartment, but not a single one uses channel 13 lol.
This increased the throughput on my wifi from about 10MBit/s to rock solid 30MBit/s and led to less delay when loading webpages.

Anyone else noticing GPS running outside of an app when unlocking their phone?

I have caught it happening a couple times now, seemingly at random.
I am not running Maps, or any other app that needs GPS... I hit the power button to wake the phone, swipe to unlock, and notice the GPS icon in the notifications.
Taping the notification just takes you to GPS location settings. Checking battery use shows no apps running that need GPS. No other direct indications that I have found in settings as to what is polling the GPS.
Anyone know what app/service is opening it in the background?
The weather clock updates itself when you unlock causing gps to hit for a couple seconds.
I checked that first... the "last updated" message said a couple hours prior. (I have it set to update every 3 hours) So I ruled that out. But I guess I could be wrong.
Seems to me, using GPS is a bit of overkill for weather location.

Network location service...
It can tell where you are by knowing what cell tower you are connected to... as it knows the cell towers physical location due to a database.
This is actually how the GPS in our phones can lock on to positions in seconds rather than a couple minutes.
Cell phones have aGPS (Assisted GPS) where the cell tower info is used to get a rough position fix and speed up GPS lock.

Most apps that use location can use network location services... including weather apps... though maybe not the Samsung app. Which is why I am curious as to why it uses GPS vs network.
I never have the "Verizon location services" turned on, never have on other phones either, and other apps can use network location just fine... as "Google location services" can provide that.
Google Now checks when I'm away from home and tells me how long it takes to get back with traffic, probably using the GPS. Have you activated Google Now?
I've noticed this as well. It's not every time I unlock but I will see it come up randomly. I think it's the weather for my clock widget. I'm not too worried though since my battery life has always been fantastic.
No Google Now...
If its the weather... seems silly to use GPS over network location.

Wifi issues please check

Just received my S4 and setup my Wi-Fi on it so I don't blow through my Data.
When I am connected to my Wi-Fi it shows both 4G and Wi-Fi on the top of the phone as if it is using both 4G and Wi-Fi.
Can others please check their phones to see if when you are connected if you are seeing Wi-Fi and 4Gor 3G showing at the same time?
Can't exchange the phone yet because the stores don't have them yet
Thanks.
Both WiFi & 4G are shown in the status bar when I am conencted to WiFi. However, if you watch the icons when using an app such as the browser, you'll notice only the orange & green arrows under the WiFi icon show data usage.

Check and see if you have any Verizon Apps running in the background. For example I *think* the My Verizon Mobile App only uses the VzW network when it is on.
Yes mine does this as well. As far as I can tell it's normal behavior. My Galaxy Nexus never did it, but my wife's Droid RAZR does it.

Some people have the same issue as me others don't. Where was your phone manufactured? Mine was made in China.
Mine was made in China.
I also have general wifi issues. The wifi is extremely weak. If I go upstairs away from my router the speed drops way way down. Also while all my other devices can see a bunch of other wifi networks in my area, my S4 can only see mine.
Mine is now showing the 4G icon while connected to wifi as well. It's odd because when I first turned on and activated the phone this didn't happen. Over the course of getting the phone setup this issue popped up.
Mine phone doesn't show 4G while on wifi.
Strange how some people show both while others don't. Do you think it is something we should bring to Verizon's attention or possible return the phone? The point of WiFi is so I keep my data charges down and when I see both Icons on I assume I am using both.
Curious to see where everyone's was manufactured, Mine was made in China and it has the issue.
Make sure to disable Caller Name ID app. In other forum someone mentioned that disabling and enabling this app worked (if you use this application). If this doesn't work, there might be another app that requires Vz network.

[Q] unknown system status symbol

Hello. I am fairly confused by a system status symbol that I do not recognize. I downloaded the S4 manual and it didn't have the symbol either. Since I'm new XDA won't let me post a picture, but it looks like a diamond with a wifi wave coming out of it to the right.
It's hosted here: i75.photobucket.com/albums/i309/nytrojan/Symbols_zps27344dc8.jpg

I believe its the location indicatior. If you turn off location services the little wifi bars go away but the diamomd with a cross don't...not sure why. Man I can't wait for vanilla roms.
Pretty sure it's for inactive gps. After turning on the gps and going to maps, it goes away and a different gps symbol shows on the left.

Good catch. Such a waste of space, lol.
someone mentioned earlier that the symbol is a 911 GPS location ... which is kinda why it looks like 4 triangles... trying to use 4 towers to triangulate your position... sorta.. it makes sense though.

That is the e911 icon. You can't turn off the e911 services, though.
On previous phones, I've been able to suppress the icon from displaying while leaving the e911 locator service running. I'd actually like to do this on my s4, too, but haven't yet found a way.

Ok, I did finally find a way to get rid of the GPS Icon - but you have to have a rooted phone to do so:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297869
I also removed the "ongoing wifi notification pop up" and the "dim eye" icon using info from this thread - requires a rooted phone, too:
