Hello. I am fairly confused by a system status symbol that I do not recognize. I downloaded the S4 manual and it didn't have the symbol either. Since I'm new XDA won't let me post a picture, but it looks like a diamond with a wifi wave coming out of it to the right.

Thanks
I believe its the location indicatior. If you turn off location services the little wifi bars go away but the diamomd with a cross don't...not sure why. Man I can't wait for vanilla roms.
Pretty sure it's for inactive gps. After turning on the gps and going to maps, it goes away and a different gps symbol shows on the left.

Good catch. Such a waste of space, lol.
someone mentioned earlier that the symbol is a 911 GPS location ... which is kinda why it looks like 4 triangles... trying to use 4 towers to triangulate your position... sorta.. it makes sense though.

That is the e911 icon. You can't turn off the e911 services, though.
On previous phones, I've been able to suppress the icon from displaying while leaving the e911 locator service running. I'd actually like to do this on my s4, too, but haven't yet found a way.

Ok, I did finally find a way to get rid of the GPS Icon - but you have to have a rooted phone to do so:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297869
I also removed the "ongoing wifi notification pop up" and the "dim eye" icon using info from this thread - requires a rooted phone, too:

So like everyone else, I have been having problems with the GPS on fascinate like other Galaxy S devices. However, on EB01 it works the best I have seen it work.
From a few other suggestions that I have gathered from these forums and my testing, here are the results of my testing. I compared the Fascinate against Motorola Droid that I have laying around running CM GB nightly 40.
Test settings
Wifi, 3G radios were OFF to measure pure GPS performance. GPS Test app was left running for 10 minutes with the phone screens on.
Fascinate - GPS turned on from settings menu, google location services on, VZW location services on
Droid OG - GPS turned on from settings menu, Use wifi networks ON.
Results after 10 mins
Fascinate - Satellites Used 7 or 8/10 - Accuracy 13.9 ft
Droid OG - Satellites Used 7/10 - Accuracy 39.4 ft
GPS turned off from settings on both phones. Phones turned off for 10 minutes. Put away in closet away from window (might be too extreme, but had to make sure they were away from a clear view of the sky). Phones started again. GPS' enabled from settings menu.
Fascinate like earlier is able to get a quicker fix from the satellites.
Phones left running for 10 mins. Similar results observed as above.
So the GPS chip in the Fascinate is more accurate when it works.
To get the GPS working, I have noticed that it needs to be turned on from the settings menu. Turning it on from notification bar doesn't work
I guess thats cool. Good thing I have wifi 24/7 when I get lost?
How is this a how-to?
I see the "GPS is good when it works" part, but not the "how to get it working" part. Unless the "how to" is "turn it on in the settings".

Really?
This thread is pathetic. If you want to express that you're getting good GPS results, post in General. This is not a how-to.

one would think, more people would step in development section looking for a mod for fixing GPS issues
But this isn't a mod. There is no "how to".

I see other How to's in here, but a mod can move it to general, if people want it there.
Thanks man.....I figured it out from your first post....turning it on in settings works for me vs notification menu. I just learned "HOW TO" get the gps working on my SF consistantly.....seems like the right place to post this.....I guess some folks on here have nothing better to do but police the posts on the forum and fling there sarcasim...must be bored...Hey...every little bit of info helps.....
Before EB01 it wasn't necessary to go into the Settings to turn on VZW location services to get a GPS lock- you only needed to enable it in the windowshade.
I've already seen many who needed this info. Its a justified post it just lacks info in the 'How-To' part.
I get a lock just fine turning it on just from the pull-down menu. Running Super Clean 2.4.
I still get horrible accuracy. "Accurate to 2100 meters" *sigh*
For some reason I can't get a lock with wifi off.. But with wifi + gps enabled, I get an accurate lock within seconds.

Well I, for one, appreciate the tip. I was always using the notification bar to turn GPS off & on.
THanks!
When I use the drop bar to activate and then start gmaps, it takes forever, or maybe never connects. Though if I use the drop bar and then an app called GPS Essentials and look at the satellites tab, it locks in a few seconds. Its seems to be dependent on the apps that are looking for a gps position. I know on my old Omnia, gps settings were in gmaps, maybe gmaps has bad settings for our phone?
this makes sense that it would be this way, when you turn on the gps in the settings menu, you have to agree to it's terms. not so much when you turn it on via the status bar.

agreed. this appears to be an EB01 bug. Once turned on in the settings turning it on/off will work from the notification bar for a while, until you reboot with the GPS off, then it doesn't work any more until you go to settings. I have the same problem w/ EB01, but not with DL09.
I finally get a lock, but it's lost within a few mins of using it.
Two quick notes:
1) If you are running SuperClean, the VZW location services setting does absolutely nothing. It is only used by Verizon apps (i.e. VZ Navigator) and Google Maps is not able to use the information obtained by VZW AGPS, so the entire service has been removed from the ROM.
2) The dropdown gps button is virtually worthless right now unless you leave google location services enabled all the time. There are multiple ways to turn on the GPS through the OS code, and the current implementation causes GPS lock to take nearly a minute longer (or never, if there is no AGPS data) than if you were to go into the Settings menu and turn it on. At some point, someone will probably mod the drop down to emulate the same method as the settings menu.
That being said, from inside my house, with all my AGPS data cleared, on a freshly cleaned and flashed phone, I can get a fix in less than 3 seconds, accurate to 20 meters without having location services turned on, using only standalone GPS data. With AGPS data, accuracy to 6 meters in 5-10 seconds. The trick is to turn it on from the Settings menu, not the dropdown.
When I select "Standalone GPS"under settings, the two lines are always showing next to the location icon. However, with the other two GPS settings selected, nothing shows next to the location icon, is it actually using battery with that on?

That is normal...even on non smartphones...it is 911 location services and no it doesnt consume more battery with the crosshair indicator there and no actual satelite usuage indicator... it remains dormant until called up.
Ok, thanks. I just thought it was odd that it looked like it was sending out signal with either the Standalone GPS or Verizon Location setting enabled.

i cant speak to whether its drawing power, but if you open maps, nav, or something else that uses gps you will see a different icon come up indicating data transfer to/from sats
Should i leave the vz and google location services also toggled on? Or will this also save battery if i leave it off?

you dont need vz location services unless you use their products i would think. i leave google services on so i can atleast get a general idea where i am on the google maps.
Yeah google location services is all you need. I think weather widget uses it as well so you need something to be on.

Yeah, I know, I'm no newcomer to the Android platform, but I didn't have this icon on my OG Droid, and this was a different icon than the standard location icon, so that's why I asked.
i thought i was having an issue with my GPS , but maybe i am not. Here are my settings and i have question on the actual symbol in status bar.In phone settings i have google and gps checked. in pull down i have gps on.
what do these symbols mean?
when gps is checked off in notification, it shows a circle like with a cross in middle
when it is checked on,its same symbol but has the 3 lines to the right of symbol(does this mean its on, but not active?)
and then when i open maps or anything requireing gps, the symbol changing to a little satelite looking symbol that flips and activates.
so i gues i am confused by the first 2 symbols, do either mean active or just in use?
The first symbol is e911, it will always be there, the 3 lines are there showing other services are on such as google and/or verizon, the satellite flashing is the actual internal gps trying to lock on to your location. (you will see the satellite flash until it gets a lock) The gps symbol should not show unless you are using an app or some sort of navigation such as maps which activates the internal gps! hope this helps... Rock on \m/

The 3 lines will show if stand alone gps, google location services, or verizon location services are enabled under settings - location & security. (Though most ppl leave the location services off unless needed I leave mine on) Gps (even though it is enabled in the menu) should not be active until you see the satellite symbol flashing or constant in the status bar at the top of your screen. Your mobile data is the symbol that says 3g/1x, if you turn off mobile data that symbol will no longer be in the status bar at the top of your screen. I hope that made sense cause I'm swyping this out on my phone

so if my symbol is showing with the lines, am i draining battery ?
If any of the services are running you using battery. How much depends on which service is running.
so if....?

Little help?
HUH? any help?
Whenever I'm connected via Bluetooth, there is a blue arrow with what looks like sideways WiFi symbol. Its blue until I toggle it and it turns grey. Only shows up with Bluetooth though. Anyone know what it does?
I toggle it on and off and it doesn't seem to change anything. More like a general question rather than a Note question, but since I use the Note I felt obligated to put it here.
Thanks!

I believe it shows you when the Bluetooth radio is toggled on in the device settings menu.
Even though you aren't using bluetooth, the icon will show the radio being on.
Try turning off bluetooth in settings, and see if it goes off. But remember there is a delay, and it may even take a reboot to turn everything off.
Roms other than stock will possibly alter it's function as well...g
Edit :
I seldom if ever, use bluetooth, so my knowledge on the icon is a bit foggy.
You could also check the users manual for more info on how it functions ....g

I searched for it on Google and couldn't find anything. I'm running a JB ROM, and it only shows when I have Bluetooth on AND connected. Toggling it seems to do nothing at all. If nothing is connected to BT, the icon isn't there anymore.

I had a strange symbol up there last week. Try this, download airpush detector from the market and run it. If it finds an app, remove it. The bluetooth part doesn't make sense to me. Give this a shot, if it's nothing just remove the app.

My dad - a fellow VZW Note 2 owner - had me explain the recent OTA to him. He also had a few other questions about the device, which i was able to answer easily, except for one. There's an icon in the status bar (with signal stregnth, battery, ect) that he had no idea what was, and i frankly had no idea either. so i s-pen-cropped it out and blew it up, and im attaching it here for you guys to check out. what is it? i honestly never gave it a second thought until now.
That icon is so that you know your phone is sending your location when you call 911. It doesn't mean that you're dialing 911 or on the line with them right now of course but if you did they would know your location as long as you see that icon which can't be disabled. Most custom roms I've seen get rid of the icon and there might be some mod's for stock but mind you it just won't display the icon but the location info will still be sent to 911.

That's mostly correct, the cross looking this is the E911 location the signal looking bars indicates you have at least one of the gps options selected even if gps is turned off.

It has to do with a location service, most likely VZW location service.
If anybody knows for sure, please correct me.
I have never seen it myself since I always disable their services and use Cell/WiFi and the GPS radio.

Ah, that would explain why I never saw it as I flashed a custom ROM within 30 minutes of owning the phone.
