hi all,
lumia 800
can anyone shed any ideas as to why my email inbox empties a day or so after reading, my sent folder is intact just the inbox empties all read mail
voith
I see 45 people have read this query, with no solution so instead I will ask is this normal, does everyones inbox empty by itself after a short period of time.
Try this: go into email settings -> synchronisation settings -> Download email from - then select a longer time.
Cheers
Do you also download your e-mails to your PC or Laptop? Then it is normal for the inbox to show up empty because those messages are no longer available. The sent messages are stored locally on your phone and not in your normal sent mailbox with your e-mail server.
"Do you also download your e-mails to your PC or Laptop" Yes
"Then it is normal for the inbox to show up empty because those messages are no longer available" Depends on how you setup email account, if you use IMAP instead of POP3 then your inbox would be available across al your devices.
Cheers

thanks all for your replies,in the synchro I have it downloading from anytime, though it made no difference, regarding the above quote, I was not downloading my mail on another computer as I wanted all mail to go to my phone and stay there as it was a dedicated addys, I lived with the deletions until I desperately needed a recent received email, and found it had already been deleted, so in the end I had to add the account to my home comp to download the mails so that I could save them, since I have started to download them to my main comp, it has not altered the time taken to delete its always a few days.
oh and I am running pop3

Can one of you nice people explain to me on how I set up my emails to sync together. My host site who has my domain and website have a £5.99 monthly charge for Outlook Sync, but I'm guessing if I don't want calendar and contacts and only Inbox and Sent items to sync up on phone and PC, then IMAP should do this? Is there any other difference??
I've tried IMAP on the phone but it only received two emails when there were 5 going to PC, Not only that but the second one overwrote the first one and it completely disappeared. And there was no copy in my sent box on the PC after replying from phone, and what do I need for security etc... None/SSL etc?
My PC is set up as POP, and is Outlook 2002 OK for this and if so please can you tell me how I do this? I really can't afford to mess up my emails in Outlook as it's work.
I set up a personal one in the GMail account in programmes really easily and that does what it says on the tin, but the other one is a nightmare,
Sorry, but you'll have to talk to me like an idiot, as I've never received email on my phone before, let alone Android phones.
Thanks for your help
Nobody can help?
Peter,
Are you asking how to have both your PC inbox/sent items look exactly like the inbox/sent items on your Hero?
As far as I know that's not possible unless you use IMAP on both PC and Hero - but I think you know that already.
Are you able to switch Outlook to IMAP (probably means re-creating the email account and copying mails around - I've forgotten how to do this in Outlook 2002)?
When you talk about the mails not corresponding between PC and Hero what do the POP3 settings look like on your PC? It's not doing anything silly like removing the mail, etc?
Sorry I don't have a specific answer to your question but I figure we can sort it out!
Regards,
mils
if your outlook is set to POP, have you set it to leave a copy of the message on the server (Somewhere in the email account settings, i can't remember where on 2002, but the help files are your friends in this case). if not, POP will REMOVE the message from the server when you download it to your PC. hence it will not be available on the phone.
change your outlook to imap, or set it to leave messages on the server and then you can have the same emails on the phone as on your PC. that is they way you have needed to do it to get this since pocket pc 2000.
Hi guys, thanks for your reply,
Obviously I don't want all the emails that are already in Outlook on the phone, but Basically, when I'm out I want to be able to answer emails that will have copies on the PC for when I get back, including the replys.
Even when PC was off I only got one to the phone, and the rest still went to PC when I switched on later. I thought if the PC was off, they would have come to the phone regardless?
My POP settings on Outlook are mail.mydomainname, smtp.mydomainname.
Does the 'leave copy of messages on server' work on IMAP and POP and if both, that wouldn't include replies from phone would it? Are there any disadvantages to leave copies on server? How does it work, when you get back and open outlook does it update sent items as well as the inbox?
al it does is leave the message on the server so that it is available for other devices, instead of being removed from the server.
you don;t need it for imap as imap leaves them in place anyway (or at least it usually does)
if you're using imap, then yes, you should get the sent items, but if using POP, then no, normally you wouldn't.
Thanks for that, any idea how I set up IMAP in Outlook, is it just a case of imap.domain name, smtp. domainname .... and it starts another folder inbox? What do you do with the POP one?
This htc email app is pissing me off . I check my email online at home and on my phone when I am out like normal people. When I read and delete an email when I am at home on my comp, it is... or should be... removed off the server and all is well. However, the emails still show on my phone after syncing. Is there a way for emails to be automatically removed on your phone after being read or deleted off the server?

It all depends on how your email is setup. Are you using POP/SMTP? Exchange?
If you are using POP/SMTP, you need to make sure that your settings on your computer is set to delete off server when you delete from inbox.
A little more info on what email provider you have and what setup you have at home will help with getting you the correct answer.

Thanks for the reply. I am using POP hotmail account. Ill have to check my settings at home when I get there.
Hotmail (POP3) downloads the email from its server on to your phone. So it has a copy saved there no matter where else you delete it. IMAP saves the email only on the server and you can access it from multiple places without having multiple copies saved.
Not sure about hotmail, but GMail has the option to use POP3 or IMAP. See if there is any settings for it on your hotmail account

I have recently started using K9 mail, but have come across an issue of duplicate emails. I will receive them in both the inbox and in the folder I have them filtered to. For example, I have created a filter in gmail to send all emails from family into a folder called "Family". When I receive them in K9 Mail, it says there are 2 emails. The email shows up in the inbox folder and in the "Family" folder. I must view/delete them separately. Is there any way to have the mail just show up in the "Family" folder only or even vice versa (in the inbox)?

Sounds like something funny on the server end to me, I've never seen this happen.. What provider or server is in use, and is it IMAP or POP?
Does this also happen with the stock app?
I am currently using Gmail via IMAP. To be honest, I have not checked the stock app or the Gmail app to see it happens with those programs also. I should do that I guess. lol.
I actually restored some old settings and don't notice the problem any longer (thank goodness for Titanium Backup - which I didn't think about until after I set up my folders again).
Now I have another problem. I have noticed that sometimes when I send an email, it will send multiple versions of the draft out as well as the final draft. For example, grafts are automatically saved in gmail every so many minutes. Well if it takes me 20 minutes (I know, that's a long time - lol) to send out the email, all the saved versions of the draft are sent out also. This can be quite troublesome if I completely reword or delete sections of the email before I send out the final version. Any clues as to why or how this is happening? Thanks in advance.
Im not happy with K9 mAIL...it downloads email that i have already downloaded on my laptop the previous day too...is there a setting to get it to only download emails for the present day??

Try to clear data of Email app? The only bad thing about that is that you have to reconfigure your email accounts...

With your phone off, go to the web browser version on a computer and check where new e-mails arrive.
If they arrive and stay in the inbox, then the problem is with your phone.
If the e-mail arrives and and directly goes to another folder or gets moved to that other folder from popping in the inbox, then it is the settings in actual account. It could be that the default incomming folder has been changed or there is a rule to move incomming e-mails to a specific folder.

Thank You for your reply.
I have configured my work email address on my phone as in my pc on microsoft outlook. I have inbox and other folders with rules. So, emails goes specifically on the relevant folders... I don't have problem with emails. They are going like i want to go, but my problem is elsewhere. If i click the new email that arrived on the notfication bar, it direct me just to inbox... it supposed to direct me directly on that email, so that i can read it... otherwise to read new emails that are on other folders (not in inbox) i have to go Settings/Folders/Inbox and than on folders... to much steps right?
Greets all,
Was wondering if anyone might have this issue. I setup my phone to grab my emails, I set it up as an IMAP so that this way I could get the emails but keep it on the server, so this way I can download it on my computer into outlook later on. Up until the One max, I never had an issue and always set it up the same way, I recently just noticed that after I read a email and if I delete it from the phone it seems to delete it off the server as well. I tested this out by sending myself an email and then deleting it, then going into outlook to receive the email but it wasnt there. If I got into the server its in the deleted folder and not in the inbox as it should be.
Anyone else notice this?
Well I just tried something else, I just set it up as a POP account, and it works as IMAP, Hmmm I wonder if they messed up and named them wrong, where Imap is suppose to be pop and pop is suppose to be IMAP.
Still curious to see others responses.
When i click Add account, it shows Other(POP/IMAP)
Screen shot attached for your reference, what do you get?
Same thing except I dont have Gmail or Yahoo in the list, just the other three, but thats not where the problem is, its after you pick Other/pop3. Long story short: I have my own email, I set it up through aol a long time ago when they were giving away domain names for free, then they dropped it and I had to get it registered through another place to keep it, but I still can use aol's mail settings in outlook to get me mail. The problem is I can see the email on aol's site, and download it to my outlook, but the first way I set it up on the phone I would see it on the phone and then delete it, when I go into outlook it would say no mail, but if I went to aol's site and looked in the trash it was in there where its not suppose to be, its suppose to be in the inbox to be downloaded to my outlook. But when I changed the setting to pop setting, it is working as Imap should.

Ah okay, i got your problem... i don't know why imagined that you PC was missing IMAP, but was that not the IMAP was supposed to work..., 2 way communication = IMAP
POP vs IMAP
If you're trying to decide between using POP and IMAP, we encourage you to use IMAP.
Unlike POP, IMAP offers two-way communication between your web Gmail and your email client. This means when you log in to Gmail using a web browser, actions you perform on email clients and mobile devices (ex: putting mail in a 'work' folder) will instantly and automatically appear in Gmail (ex: it will already have a 'work' label on that email the next time you sign in).
IMAP also provides a better method to access your mail from multiple devices. If you check your email at work, on your mobile phone, and again at home, IMAP ensures that new mail is accessible from any device at any given time.
Finally, IMAP offers a more stable experience overall. Whereas POP is prone to losing messages or downloading the same messages multiple times, IMAP avoids this through two-way syncing capabilities between your mail clients and your web Gmail.

Okay you missed the whole point here. When I chose IMAP with my email on my phone, and then delete it from the inbox (select and hit trash can) its suppose to delete from the phone inbox, but should show up as new in my outlook 2010 on my pc as new. It doesnt show up at all. If I go to a web browser and login into my email, its in my trash folder and not in my inbox as it should be.
Now if I change the setting on the phone FROM IMAP to POP, THEN is works correctly as IMAP.
they way i have always thought of imap to work is , as the other poster mentioned: 2 way communication.
if i delete mail on the phone (imap), then on my web based email, that same email will be deleted there.
if i move an email from , say, inbox to some other folder on my phone, then on the server it too will get moved there.
this is how imap is supposed to work? at least that is how it has worked for me over the years...
i have 4 email accounts on my own email server. i use gmail to fetch that mail and i also use my web based interface to access it. the mail is synced everywhere its supposed to be.
i have the all set to imap, not pop.

me too... yes that's how IMAP works, i am guessing OP has some little confusion on it..
I do understand this, but coming from a samsung galaxy note, this wasnt the case. On computers it did work this way, but every phone I've had and including the Note did not work this way, this is the first time its functioning this way, which I thought was odd.
