How long did you run Viper for? You have to give it a couple of battery cycles before you can truly gauge the battery of any ROM...stock or otherwise

Try them ALL! Use what works best for YOU. It's the only way.
Best of luck!

Viper 1.0.1 with elkay kernel is fantastic for battery life, not to mention fast, smooth and polished. Never had such a perfect ROM. Truly beats out stock handily. Have around 40% battery by 10 or 11 pm. If you tried Viper 1.0 with the stock/system write kernel, it's worth trying again.
But the installation sequence is key: Flash the ROM, then fastboot flash the elkay boot image, recovery flash the "return to stock - fixed" kernel modules, then the elkay kernel modules, then (unless you do the kernel flash before booting the first time) wipe cache and dalvik cache.
I briefly tried Hatka. Fast, but much less polished and seemed a bit flaky. Didn't have it on long enough to test battery, but it's supposed to be great. The other thing is don't try the cubed kernel, at least not now (he's working on it again - elkay seems to have stirred up some competitive juice). Crashes all the time, overheats my phone, etc.

Elkay recommends you reflash stock when changing even from his kernel. Look at his uninstall instructions. He repeated those instructions in a recent post when this same controversy came up on his thread. The point is it takes about 10 seconds more (as long as you do it in the same recovery session) and is a guarantee that you've covered your bases.

Dsb himself said it is not necessary. The only reason that file is needed is because cubed kernel removes some files when you install it, and you need to put them back when you change to a different kernel.

did you flash a kernel? You should flash a good kernel with whatever ROM you end up using. It'll help with battery life and speed so give the Viper ROM with a kernel if you like the ROM. I'm personally waiting for the CyanogenMod...they just got the screen working but not radios today

I didn't see much of a difference between Viper and Super Charged in terms of battery life. LK's kernel on the other hand was a massive improvement. I'm currently using Viper 1.0.1 with LK's kernel and I can get close to two days of use on just one charge.

Can anyone here please provide a link to LKs Kernel. Based on all of the good comments, I'm itching to flash this now.
PS. Also a link to Viper ROM too.
Many thanks!

OP,
Yes, CM7 is worth it IMO. if you have ran CM7 in another phone, youll be even more impressed with it on the photon. It almost responds faster then my brain does when. milliseconds to open PDf files and apps.
Battery life, yes i do see a GREAT improvement. Joker just released a kernel work for CM7 and will be making further tweaks for Uv that should make it even better! even when i ran it on my EVO, battery life jumped. Yes the photon is already amazing batt life, but CM7 cleans up alota stuff that is really crap in your phone. Im not afraid to travel wo a charger running CM7. on the evo, i would leave for the weekend wo a plug, and this last weekend i did the same thing with running CM7 on my photon.
least try it if you are ok without 4G and share your experience. CM7 is a streamline platform that is PACKED full of goodies. It cleans up your phone and will make it smooth and snappy. It will be a whole new BEAST!
Im glad cybik is with the photon community. his CM7 build is what i have been dreaming for since the day i threw my EVO to the grown.
Honestly, i could careless about ICS with now having CM7. Once team CM builds CM9, if that is ported over then sure as hell ill flash it, but im not a kid waiting for santa now. CM7 has me HAPPY!
disregard post please
^.^ won't work.
CM7 with the new joker kernel works great! It's fast with good battery life. I have no 4G near me (even thought I live in the most densely populated state in the country) so I don't miss it due to unlocking.
do you know if mms and youtube are fixed? and what about being able to use the ext-sd without having to go into CM settings?

Just rooted my Vibrant, what's the best rom to get?

Hello! I'm new to the rooting thing and finally rooted my Vibrant last night. I'm really eager to get a new rom running and wanted to know what the best one out there is? I'm so over Eclair.
this is gonna be funnnnn
me smell troll?
Huh? I'm not a troll.
"best" is all in the eye of the beholder, i myself am not a big fan of TW roms, while others will swear by them 24/7
so as a first time flasher, go with something easy try out a 2.2.1 rom, Bionix or Trigger. once you get more comfortable try something a little more complicated MIUI/CM7 (personally i'll swear by Miui any day of the week, best rom in all categories in my opinion)
if you wanna jump on the 4.0 band wagon grab Neo's ICS 4.0 passion. very clean stable and shiny. only downside atm is no video recording.
just make sure you read all the OP's and flash accordingly bricking your phone is near impossible but it's always a hassle to have to odin back to jfd and start over.
Awesome! Thank you so much!
For a 2.2.1 rom I would do Bi-Winning over Bionix Frost. But for 2.2 I would definitely start with Bionix 1.3.1 or Nextgen.
Miui only lasted a week on my phone before Google framework started its Marathon of FC's. It is pretty, but I like a app drawer more.

You definitely want a Toxic ROM. Nothing comes close to the batterylife. Try Toxics D9, there is a RC3 version out right now, you wont regret it, its easy to flash and ridiculously stable.

I like ICS Passion, but since it's still in beta I would not recomment this rom for a first timer. (That's the reason why I don't currently use it).
I like MIUI, because it's really easy to change the theme of the rom.
Be warned that you won't get the battery life you are used to. With that said you can flash a 2.2 rom (bionix, bi winning, etc) and pretty much get a batterylife that will last you the whole day, untill you go to sleep. Hope that helped

My 2 cents... I've tried a bunch of ROMs and by far the most stable, easiest to update, most customizable, most fun to tinker with has got to be MIUI. It honestly wins on all counts for me. Their launcher gives you the ability to customize all parts of the UI. you will have a ton of fun!

I'd say Bionix 1.3.1 or 1.3.2 http://sourceforge.net/projects/bionix-v/files/,
Zendroid 2.1.2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079517
or Team Toxic D9rc3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360502,all of which are 2.2 Froyo roms and very solid.
That isn't to dismiss any of the many roms available, but just my picks for starters.
We Vibrant owners are very lucky to have the tremendous community of developers, that gives us the opportunity to mod and customize are phones and I'm really grateful to all.

I dont know why it always happened. I would format system, data, datadata, cache, dalvik, factory reset and then flash. I would restore my apps via MIUI Backup, it would last 5 days about and then force close constantly. I have no clue why it always happened.
I'm about done with Gingerbread anyway, these ICS roms are looking better and better by the day. Too bad CM quit Vibrant, 911 works on ICS. Wish they'd give it a second chance.
About time you rooted. I always liked the bionix stuff from team whiskey. CM never really agreed with my vibrant as well as my older phones. But these posters are right, start with some of the easier stuff and get familiar with Odin. ICS passion is very nice IMO. Enjoy as your old phone is going to become brand new for you.

I've tried lots of different ROMS and bounced between them. I would have to agree with others that MIUI is the most customizable and in my opinion is very sleek. Cyanogen is always solid. Right now I'm running ICS Passion v8 and have been hooked since v4 due to the fun ICS tweaks. Just a matter of taste.

Manually debloated VillainROM 3.0 (Hellraised, of course) works great for me. Unnamed has a good list of what to nuke for battery - SNS and the various hubs are the most important.
I9100 XXKI3 base seems to be better for battery, especially in weak signal situations, than UCKH7, and doesn't have the issues that seem to have shown up in later bases like XWKK5 or UCKK6.

Any ROM with UCKK6 has an issue with wifi battery drain (check on the battery drain thread) in idle. I have been to MIUI->UnNamed->MIUI and it seems MIUI has better idle drain than UnNamed because of that (10% drain with 6 email accounts syncing for 6 hours with MIUI and I believe I had 20% drain with 3 emails accounts syncing with UnNamed, both with the same kernel). I tried both DD and Siyah kernel and I personally feel Siyah is better at battery, but marginally.
Check my config in my signature. pretty decent life. about 14-16hrs.

Ive been on unnamed. New to android so this is the only ROM i have tried. Wanted to try it with the Siyah kernel but a little scared. It seems like it has so many tweaks and governers and stuff. I think im too new to mess with all those settings lol
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk
It all depends on how we use it. My best stats were on serendipity rom with DD. I never tried it with siyah. I'm running miui now. I had 40 hours of battery life. (34 hours realty since 6 of the hours were inactive) I turned off data when I was not using it. I had 3.5 hours of screen on time. I texted about 300-500 text a day.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
I doubt there's a HUGE difference between any of them. Typically what ends up killing peoples battery time is added apps that stay open or keep wakelocks active. In those situations, NONE of the ROMS will be good.

any chances of you implementing a louder volume tweak into your kernel for incall? the only thing i notice is occasional lag when pressing the back button, sometimes it doesn't respond at all.
My capacitive buttons doesn't vibrate when I press them now...?
How do I go back to the stock kernel?

Reflash your ROM.
That's a known issue with all custom kernels. It only seems to happen to a few people.

I installed BetterBatteryStats last night so I'll chime in tonight. As mentioned before, screen on time isn't accessible on Sense's settings.

What's everyone running?

Hey all i777 users!
Just wondering what ROMS/Kernels are everyone running and what has been your experience with them.
I have a couple of NANDroid backups with different ROMS that run smooth and stable on my S2, and backups of data so I just switch them after some days. But as daily drivers I've settle down with:
SuperNexus 3 (smooth & fast, stable and very battery friendly and less buggy compared to other 4.3 based ROMS)
Ilussion ROM (smooth, nexus-based, beautiful, battery friendly)
MIUI V5 (best battery life so far, smooth, it's MIUI so the UI it's unique to it)
All these with AJK 4-4.5 kernel and tweaking for improved battery.
Now I'm about to flash Hellybean and give it a shot. Maybe will try SHOstock later this week.
Of the 4.3 ROMs I flashed Supernexus, CM, and Helly. They all just seem to striped down for my taste. I will wait for the Pac, Carbon, or Task to implement the 4.3 changes in their roms.
I run the 7/27 nigntly of Carbon as my daily. I flashed AJ's Boss kernel, but had problems with it so I have been running the latest STi kernel. I find the stock kernel on the Carbon roms work just fine, but I wanted to mess with dual booting a little bit.

Haven't tried Carbon, will try soon. What problems you had with AJ's kernel?
Just had some random reboots. Nothing major.

UCMD8 v1.8 Cooked with AJK v4.5. Excellent battery life. About 1% per 10 minutes while browsing.
Super Nexus 2 milestone and latest AJK. Very nice!!!!
Also tried running cooked 1.8 with AJK which was great (just prefer look of SN)
I had issues with Super Nexus 3 (I already forget what they were) but may give it another go soon. Especially if Faryaab puts up another release.

Haven't tried Super Nexus 2, I had the gallery bug with the 3, pics would appear as "unsupported-videos" in the Gallery. I was thinking on going back and trying to install Quikpic or a different gallery app to see if it fixes it. I'm the same as you! I prefer the pure android look of SN

Had it running until yesterday to try SHOstock. What kernel are you using?

Sounds really good, I might try it and leave it for those long days that I'm away from a charger (like yesterday).

I tried a couple of gallery apps with no luck. It did appear to be fixed when I installed a photo editing/gallery type app but I paid for it and did not like it so not going to mention. Let me know about quikpic since I don't think that was one I tried.

Hasn't Siyah evolved into AJK? I'm using SN 2 with AJK and it's pretty awesome!

Nice! I was thinking on trying that combo soon.
I'm running IllusionRom 2.5 with latest AJK and it's a beast! It looks really really cool and with some tweaks and UV, battery life can last up to 8-10 hours!

I think he means 8-10 hrs of heavy use. Otherwise, that wouldn't be good battery life. :B
