[Q] Problems with USB, technically bricked my phone - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so i tried to install a new rom because my AOKP Rom wasnt connecting to my PC so i thought.
Ok so here is the problem. Half way through installing a rom, some how my phone crashes, after waiting 5 hours just incase i ripped out the battery and thought i will reinstall a rom that works the CWM. Nice and easy so i thought until i couldn't access CWM. So now i have a non bootable block of plastic and a screen.
Next i put the phone into download mode expecting to use Odin to just reinstall everything from scratch however my computer cannot recognise my Device. It says USB device not recognised and doesnt show up a drive letter on my computer. Any ideas of how to fix this?
No 1) let me make this clear it is not a driver issue, as all the correct drivers are installed and my girlfriends GS2 works fine.
No 2) it doesnt matter which computer i try to connect it to it wont work.
No 3) i have tried it with and with out Samsung Kies.
No 4) The batter is charging so the port cant be completly dead.
So how do i install anything on the phone if a computer cannot access it?
I even thought of trying to use killdisk to wipe any dodgy partitions but of course this wont recognise this device as a drive letter.
Please please can any body help or should i just assume the usb port is Dead.

Odin won't detect i9100 in download mode after new kernel

Hi,
So I just purchased a Samsung Galaxy S II, and I've been trying a few different ROM's found on this site. The last thing I did was actually revert back to a stock Samsung Kernel and firmware. This worked fine, but it unrooted my device, which I knew would happen, but now I'm not able to root it again because when I put the device into download mode, ODIN, or better yet, my computer won't detect the device.
I have all the drivers installed, and I also deleted them all, and Kies, and started from scratch again after searching XDA for similar issues.
I don't believe this to be a driver issue, since I was able to root my device, and swap roms before I went back to the official kernel and firmware. I'm with Bell in Canada, so the versions I went back to were not the official Bell versions, since Samsung has not made them available.
I have a Mac, but I've been using Windows 7 and Odin under VMWare. I can connect my device to either OSX, or Windows 7 when the device is not in download mode, and everything works fine, and Odin detects the device (Not that that does any good of course)
When I connect the device under download mode, the Mac detects the device and asks me if I want to connect it to my Mac, or to Windows (As it should) but no matter which one I select, neither OS acknowledges the device after that point, where as when I'm not in Download mode, both OS's detect the device fine.
After all my troubleshooting with my computer based off of what I found online here, The only conclusion I have left is that there is something missing on the device that allows it to be found under download mode, but that aspect of all this is beyond my current skill level.
Anyone have any ideas?
Are you pressing the Volume Up button to continue in Download mode? Besides, Virtual machine isn't recommended I think.
Yes, Once the Custom ROM warning comes up, I press the Volume up button to continue.
That wasn't even necessary on the Stock Bell ROM. The warning didn't come up at all.
VM has been working fine up until now, so I don't think that's the problem, but I have been thinking of trying this on my old laptop that runs on windows if nothing else pans out.

Have you found anyway to Make Odin recognize to phone in download mode?? Im still struggling with that. my phone is on stock kernel and not rooted yet, ODIN finds it fine when the phone is on and USB Debugging is on, but once I put the phone on download mode it wont recognize it, I dont know why..
Could it be because of the ''SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device'' driver failed to install correctly??
all other drivers are installed correctly.. I have tried to get the driver mentioned above to install correctly but it fails every time, with USB debugging on and off, i have wiped the phone and installed Kies and the drivers several times, Im clueless right.. anyone have any idea please help??
I myself am also suffering from this problem. However, USB seems to function fine while the phone is booted up or in recovery (For ADB). I'm wondering if necessary files may have become corrupted or deleted in reference to USB drivers (phone side mind you) that are used in download mode.
edit: It's also recognized in recovery mode.
Even if it can't be fixed I'd still like to understand why.

was looking for help on this and saw this thread, same problem too..
Connects to Odin and Kies fine when switched on "normally", can use USB mass storage mode Etc.
comes up with a USB device has malfunctioned message on PC when I connect USB cable when switched on and in download mode
EDIT:- just to add, if I try upgrading firmware via Kies it gets to the point where it switches the phone to download mode to upgrade it and has the same issue even with an official upgrade
Figuring download mode is outside the normal boot procedure, I hoped on an off chance that pulling my battery and sim for a few minutes would reset it. It did indeed. Download mode is now functional again, just to be certain I tested it right before pulling the battery to make sure it was still broken. And multiple flashes and reboots afterwards seem to confirm that it has returned to normal.
Anyone else who solves it with this method, please report back.

Tried this and it didn't work for me :/ going to give it another try later, thanks for the suggestion either way

Help me please I don't know how bad I messed this up?

Ok, I downloaded onecosmic ICS and flashed it and all was good... Then I decided to change roms, in the process my USB connection to my pc kept giving me unknown device? I couldnt mount a thing. I eventually fixed that with my phone on but in download mode I still get unrecognizable device, which doesn't allow me to use odin... So brilliant me decided hey, I'll just download another rom lithium 1.1 and maybe my device will be recognized in download mode, well no.
So I was desperate and decided to say hey maybe if I revert to an old froyo rom to see if i can pull this off so I chose Ultimate rom, put in my sd and deleted everything then flashed, well I get an error saying something about cwm 3.0 and it aborts. Now I'm stuck in a bootloop, no rom on my phone that can be flashed properly through cwm 5.0??? But I can still get into download mode although it seems useless because I cannot get my pc's to recognize it therefor no com port? Anyone please can you help me? I did the driver thing and it doesnt recognize it still but it did when my phone was not in download mode and on?
I think you can always save your phone if you can get into download mode.
Which version of Odin are you using? Check the sticky at the top of this section in the forums.
Also, check google or YouTube.
Sent from using ICS Passion 10.6 using XDA App
Hi thanks for your reply, I was always under the understanding if you can get into download mode all is good too, but it simply doesnt recognize my phone in it, plus I have CWM I can get into so I just utilized that with a removable SD card and reflashed back to where my usb problems began (with onecosmics ICS). I have ODIN 1.52, I have flashed hundreds of times on and my phone was always recognized in download mode, now its only recognized when its on. I would like to just get out of this mess and revert back to passion or deranged 9 with a clean phone lol. I cant odin, which is annoying lol. my usb seemed to crawl too after I went to onecosmics ics, has never recovered either, took 45 min for 350 songs? Never was that slow.
Can't Odin
Pennvision66,
From what I understand you can get to download mode but Odin doesn't recognize phone.
Just my observation I seem to recall if when in download mode and Odin doesn't see phone.... Start Odin, pull battery, plug in usb cable, put battery back in, get into download mode.
Then reflash to stock and flash GB Bootloaders.
Thanks but for some unknown reason i do that and the com port stays blank, then I get a message in the bottom right of the screen saying unrecognizable device. left it chill there for 20 min and still nothing... install the sammy drivers try again still nothing... Eveytime in download mode, unrecognizable. uninstalled all usb's reset windows re-installed, still nothing. removed bios battery on pc, still nothing in download mode. man it feels like i have done everything. . .

Here's a couple ideas (Just adding some extra ideas if you didn't try these yet)
Have you tried using different USB ports on your computer, or using other devices to ensure the USB's are working properly? (I'm just double checking, didn't see any comments about this being tried in your list)
If that doesn't work, make sure it's a data cable and not just a charge cable (is there another device you can try using the cable with to connect to your computer?).
Random stuff I did to get Odin to work: I installed the driver's that come with Heimdall (I don't know if those are sammy drivers). I'm using Odin 1.7.
Thanks bro, I've tried all ports and other PC ports as well on other computers lol.. No dice, I'm using the cable that came with the phone, I only got one... It's like a usb data cable with the ability to outlet charge, it comes with a separate plug that you put the usb into to charge from an outlet. or just use the usb for the pc. I don't have another usb that fits the phone, I did just install the sgh-t959 driver through heimdall while it was on being that its not recognized off, and my device went from a vibrant with an exclamation mark next to it, to a sgh-t959 (interface1) with no exclamation mark (in device manager)? Maybe that helped?

Is Odin seeing the phone now?
Make sure the phone's not plugged in
start odin
put the phone in download mode
connect the phone to the computer
I'm hoping this works... it's always hard to trouble shoot things when you're not there!
For sure, I'm going to try now.
nope, still unrecognized in download mode...
Do you have any roms in your sd card? Can you get into recovery mode since u can get DL mode?Any nandroid backups? If u do flash any of those but factory reset, format system, data, cache and wipe dalvik.
I didnt have a nandroid, but I took the removable sd and threw ics onecosmic back on it wiped everything and its up and running but still doesn't solve my issue with unrecognized device only in download mode? I was able to get into cwm and download mode, only issue is i wanna flash through odin and I simply cannot lol.
I have the same issue with one cosmic not recognizing my vib on pc.Why do you need to odin for?

Have you tried ICS Passion? I'm able to Odin from that.
would like a fresh clean phone with eugenes method and give deranged 9 a go. plus I need gb bootloader and only know how to do it through odin if I want to give passion a go again... Never had this problem before
Try DL cm7 and flash it and then try odin.cm7 was good to me going into odin
I'm on it... be right back, hope it works
tried it and got an error, heres what it reads...
Installing update... assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "vibrant" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "vibrant || getprop("ro.product.board") =="vibrantmtd" || getprop("ro.product.device).... etc etc etc then installation aborted. error in sdcard update cm7 vibrant signed
What drivers did you install? Vibrant drivers? I had gingerbread installed once and I believe I had to install the i9000 or vibrant 4g drivers for odin to recognize it. I can't remember which one it was. I also remember that download mode wouldn't work. The phone would only be recognized when it was in recovery. It was really weird but it worked.
Try flashing a GB kernel like glitch v13 and then cm7.keep us posted
Edit:Flash kernel then reboot recovery option then rom

[Q] PC wont recognize

my phone will not be recognized by the computer no matter what i do. It recognizes my friends i777 just fine in odin and as a storage device so it isnt my drivers. With mine it only makes the connection sound and says device drivers failed to install. I am running shostock 3, philz kernel and windows 7. I have tried everything and i am out of ideas, please help. thanks
Install Kies fresh, install android sdk and update it, reboot, try different usb ports.
Also u have to disable usb debugging and let it install those drivers, enable it and let it install those drivers and boot into download mode and do a regular reboot and let it install those. Always worked for me after following those steps.
If he's friends phones works. Then I think it's the phone usb. My own phone has the same issues but my usb on phone is messed up. Says charging while its not chargin and that happens I get the whole Device not recognize and fail to install. Try cleaning your usb with 99% Isopropyl of the instructions above this post don't work out.

I will try this. I appreciate the help
I tried the suggestions.....
I downloaded the samsung drivers correctly because my pc recognizes any other samsung but no matter what i've tried it says usb device not recognized for my galaxy. Im stuck in a boot loop and the only thing i can access is download mode when i plug it in the computer. I can't access anything with the battery in, it just flashes the galaxy logo over and over. Thank you for you time in advance

SGS2 is not recognized as a USB device by windows

We had a power bump the other day while my phone was charging. since then the computer started to not recognize the usb device. I downloaded new drivers and tried all the old tricks I used to use to get it accepted by 4 different windows PC. I have tried multiple usb cables as well still no luck. The phone is still charging but sometimes it will be at 15% and then the indicator will flash to 100% charged and I have to restart the phone to get the indicator to ready properly and continue charging.
I have tried a factory reset to see if all the phone needed was a kick in the butt to start working again but that did nothing but lose my data. I think the usb mini port is blown from the bumps but if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. I am on the jellybean official all phone details are in my signature.
Is there any way to update the firmware and do rooting without a usb? Can i take external sd card and load stuff i want onto there and get to a rooted unlocked phone via recovery mode?
Replace the USB board/port. Cheap/quick/easy to do yourself. KeithRoss39 has a guide in General section which has all the info you need. Flashing stuff to/messing with your phone without having a way to recover (I.E the ability to Odin flash via USB) is foolish & invariably leads to a busted phone with no way of fixing it until you fix the USB board/port. So you might as well do that first.

[Q] AT&T Galaxy S4 i337 doesn't connect to PC

I tried flashing CWM recovery onto my AT&T Galaxy S4 and because my phone does not connect to my computer via USB for some reason (the phone charges and my computer recognizes that there's a device in, but I cannot actually do anything with it) I flashed it with Flashify. I rebooted into recovery mode, and I got slapped with the "Unauthorized software has been detected on your phone!" message. So I tried rebooting, and I got stuck in a recovery mode bootloop with the same message. Eventually, I realized if I just go into download mode and reboot by pressing the volume down key, it doesn't try to go into recovery mode. I have already endlessly researched my USB problem, and yes, I DO have USB debugging on. ODIN recognizes that I have an external device in as well, but I haven't tried flashing anything onto my phone with it because I don't want to brick my phone because the connection to my PC is faulty. I'm using the charger that came with the device as my USB drive, so that's not faulty either. I know rooting my phone did this, and I'm pretty sure it's because I missed a step. I used this tutorial to root my phone:
[droid views dot com] /root-att-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337-android-4-4-4-kitkat-firmware-i337ucufnj4/ (I'm not allowed to post links yet, so fix the URL if you're gonna have a look)
When I flashed the I337_NC1_Stock_Kernel, my phone refused to go into download mode and I couldn't flash the I337_NJ4_Stock_Kernel as a result. I'm pretty sure that's what caused it, but I have no idea how to fix it. I'm not an expert with my phone and, despite almost soft-bricking my phone via a corrupt CWM .zip, I'm not a newbie at this either. If I could figure out how to fix this problem, I wouldn't have to worry about throwing myself into a bootloop because I can just use ODIN. I was a sitting duck before download mode rescued me, so I'd like some help as to how I can accomplish this. Any and all help is appreciated. I am 100% certain my device is the right version for that tutorial, I wouldn't try to root my phone without checking all of the simple things first.
