I found a button remapper program Here on XDA . I used it with sucess. You can also do some editing to a system file if you would like. I can point you in the right direction....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464
Download and install
ButtonRemapper v0_2.4.1.apk
If that doesn't help let me know i can edit the file you need to be able to do what you want. Which hardware key do you want to use to do this?

What's the file you edit and where is it located?
Do you just edit it with a text editor or something special required?

System/usr/keylayout/ruby-keypad.kl
Use a text editor and make sure you have root permissions.
Key 248 should be the unusable camcorder button.

I am completely happy with my Amaze - just lacking one important for me feature.. to be able answering incoming calls with a phone hardware button.. I tried this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kigate.EZbutton&hl=en but couldn't get it working with VOLUME_UP button.. the VOLUME buttons anyway kept muting the ring during incoming calls instead of answering them..
Any help or an idea?
Thanks a lot!

I haven't used that one. I found Buttonmapper and was able to change some of the buttons. I posted a link to the forum as well.
You can edit the file that I spoke of in the previous posts as well.

Is there any way I can reprogram the send button to the search button? It would be really useful considering the call button doesn't really do much in 2.2.

You would have to go into the Key charts and change it. I remember a while back when I had my Samsung Moment and was on SDX that we changed the keys to support MP3 controls when the phone was off and function normally when the phone was on so it is possible. The files are located in /system/usr/ and you can start by checking those out.
Please back up before making changes though...

I have built a kernel, based on hastarin R7.6, which has send/dial key mapped to search. You may want to have a try.
Unfortunately I don't have the perm to post links... It's 6VRCX0X55T on multiupload.
Hey guys does anyone know if there is a possibility to use one of the Volume Rockers as a Camera Button?
The other threads in the Droid forums didn't bring anything up but maybe you know a way?
I don't really like soft keys to use the camera because you will always screw up the pictures.
Also it would be possible to shoot pictures under water with such a key.
The touchscreen doesnt work in water
thanx
Try this app : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464
thanx for the quick answer
Been looking for the exact same thing. Thanx a lot for the link, will try it asap.
:=)
can someone just tell if it worked?
would be great :=) thanks :=)
yes it works, set the button to none in remapper or the camera can launch while screen off. then you don't have a volume up button, so I use tasker to create a widget to put all the volumes to high.
use last VIGNETTE apk, it use camera button from volume! great!

u mean the app from the market which costs money? sry.. don't want to invest for basic functions :=)))
but.. i'm not quite sure how to configure the camera button.. will play around when i got time.. if anyone has the knowledge and the time to post the procedure for the above tool :=) would be great...
my problem: from the screenshots and the description.. i'm not quite sure how to define that the volume button actually gets used as "touch-screen-action"? :=/

How would anything get done if we all needed blow by blow instructions.
Read the post, install the APK, it's an app not a string of ADB commands.
Scroll down to volume up button, select it, tell it to be a camera button in the drop down, apply. If you don't want the reverse option on the note bar then configure app.
BTW the search button won't configure withthis app.

Good! Though I find the vol rocker too hard to press for taking photo
Hey guys, is there a way to put the screen to only turn on with the power button?? because in my pocket, the other buttons are pressed, so it's using battery and sometimes stop the music i'm listening. The other buttons that i'm speaking are: Search, return, home and menu. I'm using mik's v6.5.8 with fserve's goldenleaf.
I guess u can! Go to cm setting --lockscreen-- unlock options nd edit as u want ...;-) don't for to press thanks

Read here.
I'll upload the files, simply put them in /system/usr/keylayout/ (Overwrite existing) and set permissions to 777.
you've made it lanis! thanks, you've helped me a lot =D
now, not to detract from this threads original purpose... but it seems as if the OP got his answer, but while we are on the subject of keys and their functions.
Can we make the search button a pause / play button? with CM7 vol up and down are volume and skip buttons, but there is no physical button for pause play, it would be really nice to have that.
Nice wish they had a thanks button on this app that works great I have been meaning to do this for a while

Simply edit the 2 files I've uploaded (You can even edit the original ones) and replace each key's function with the function you want. (Ex. key 222 MENU)

ya i figured that out with a lil bit of googling. So i now have the search for pause n play with out waking hte phone.
But i would like it to act like the vol up and down buttons in CM7. where they have to be long pressed to skip... id like to have to long press to pause and play on the search, and ONLY when the screen is off / phone is locked like the vol up and down buttons.
dang it would be so awesome to have long press like described above.... if anyone could point me to the vol up and down rocker script that does their long presses i could go from there.
Is there any possible way to change the search key function to be the power instead of search. I am on cm9dx2 and I tried the button remapper APK and it didn't work it would reboot every time I hit apply with no results.
Sent from my MB870 using xda premium
You can change it by modifying the file tegra-kbc.kl located in /system/usr/keylayout. I forget what to change. Let me get back to you on that.
EDIT: Ok, change the line that says
key 217 SEARCH WAKE_DROPPED
to
key 217 POWER WAKE
Then reboot for it to take effect.
Thanks alot. Worked great

My button is definitely wearing down. Its not so clicky anymore. It still works though. But its good to know that if it does completely go out, I have this option.
I'm wondering if it's possible to remap the capacitive Search button to open up the ICS Recent Apps menu instead, exactly like described in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21501238
I'm on stock OTA 4.0.4 rooted, but I'm not sure if a custom rom has this functionality or I have to try to make it myself (no idea how!). There seem to be mods but are for other devices.
Currently if I modify the cy8c201xx.kl in /keylayout (i.e. change SEARCH to APP_SWITCH) it just opens up the old gingerbread app switcher.
Hmm.. This shouldn't be too hard to do.. I'll have a few friends of mine take a look into it with me, and come back with what I find They're long-time Android Hackers
EDIT: Talking with my friends, will be working on trying to get this to work Can't promise anything, but I'll sure try to get it working! lol.. It would be something that I want too

Hi, I found this on another Droid Forum:
You just need to edit the corresponding key mapping file in /system/usr/keylayout/ to make the changes you want. On my Razr Maxx the file that controls the 4 capacitive buttons is named cy8c201xx.kl. To swap the key functions you just change the word next to the key number: i.e. replace SEARCH with MENU and vice versa. Make sure to backup your original just in case.
You can set it to any function that is defined (POWER, AUTO_ROTATION, VOLUME_UP, etc.) you just need to know the proper name. I have read that recent apps may be APP_SWITCH but I have not tested it myself. I do not know how to create a new function if it is not already defined.
Hope it helps.

Works Great on my XT912. I can now lock my screen by short pressing the cap search
I know that on phones that you have to use the power button to lock/unlock it is usally the first button to fail.
Now I need to figure out how to wake using a cap button.
Here's the original
Code:
key 158 BACK WAKE_DROPPED VIRTUAL
key 139 MENU WAKE_DROPPED VIRTUAL
key 217 SEARCH WAKE_DROPPED VIRTUAL
key 102 HOME WAKE VIRTUAL
Here's what I changed
Code:
key 158 BACK WAKE_DROPPED VIRTUAL
key 139 MENU WAKE_DROPPED VIRTUAL
key 217 POWER WAKE_DROPPED VIRTUAL
key 102 HOME WAKE VIRTUAL
